I tried a couple Bass Pro reels in the distant past and they are still going strong. The good thing about buying anything from Bass Pro is the service and warranty. If you are an experience baitcaster user, you might be more critical in your choice of tackle. However, most budget reels are pretty good for any new angler starting out. Most reels are setup for easy use. They preset the internal brakes with half the brakes engaged. If you read the directions that come with the reel, it explains how to use the brakes. If you don’t, as many anglers seem to do you might not know you have two kinds of brakes anyway. If you abuse a budget reel, it doesn’t last any longer than a costly one you abuse. If you do a Debo clean and service job like he explained in his videos, that budget reel will last a long time. In fact doing it to a new reel is even a better idea. I found out it improves the reels operation before you ever use it. The difference between a $50 dollar reel and a $100 dollar reel is $50 dollars. The performance is only slightly better. From $100 dollars to $200 dollars, reels often perform only slightly below reels costing $300 to $500 dollars. If you can’t cast a $100 dollar reel buying one that costs $500 dollars isn’t going to make you any better.
Good info here that u commented on Debo's channel. Is there a website etc where i could go to to learn how to perform maintenance and lube etc to my baitcaster reels and spinning reels? Thank u
I have all baitcasters, 3 bass pro qualifiers, a Johnny Morris platinum (red), a jm carbonlight (white), 2 jm signature (black) and 2 jm titanium (blue -discontinued). They are all a step above the pro qualifiers. But I feel the carbonlight ($120) is very similar to the most expensive platinum ($160). All but rest are very good but hard to distinguish a difference. The signature (black) are the bigger 30 version with stronger drag capabilities. They all go on sale Friday with a trade in program the makes them even less expensive. I have not had any problems with any of the reels. I’ve never used any of the higher end reels but I’m happy with these. Kinda afraid to try a higher end reel because I don’t want to know what I’m missing if I’m missing a lot 🤣
I work for bass pro. I’ve never had to use 4 brakes, most of the time I do 2 and your not advised but you can do one. It casts really far. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
LOL Thanks for the shoutout! Yep, I watch all the time. You and LoJo, I don’t miss a video I have learned a lot about modern day fishing especially from you and your teaching. I fished all the time growing up. Sometimes months without missing a day. When I left home I basically quit fishing. Getting ready to retire I took it up again. I have been fascinated by all this new stuff, and like I said, I have learned a TON from you. Thanks Brother. I really really appreciate your videos and all the work you put into them.
I have 2 of these and I used to have the original pro qualifier too. I bought them all during the classic sale for $50. The difference between the original and the 2 is huge. The PQ2 is much slimmer, smoother, and just feels better. For full price you can get better reels but on sale for $50 it’s a killer reel. I love em.
My friend bought one of these on sale last year at my suggestion. It is a great deal at that price. It has the body of a Lew’s LFS. The LFS has 10 bearings, the pro has 7. The LFS has mag brakes, the pro has dual brakes. Those are the only differences besides the knobs and the thumb bar. It has served him well. Thanks for the review.
This thing is a steal for $49, but, as a baitcasting newbie, I had a really hard time setting the brakes up. Thanks for explaining the process so clearly Debo. I can’t wait for the first 60 degree day to try it out!
Good vid DEBO! I am a fan of all of them but I learn SO much from these comparison types. You use every opportunity to explain the item that it’s very instructional about all reels. Thanks for breaking it down for us beginners. Like I’ve said before: You are a very good teacher. If I ever get competent at this it will be because of you.
Thank you!!!!! I looked at this reel and I don't know anyone who has one. I like to"play" with one before I nab one up. The price is definitely in my range. I don't tournament fish anymore so I'm not so critical about what I arm myself with like I used to. That's why I chose the Abu Garcia Black Max 3 low profile. It's really smooth, quiet and simple to set. Personally I prefer that over everything. You push the cast button, you hear one click. Cast so smoothly with no winding sound then it engages with one click. No play or give in the handle. Very solid & assuring that it's working like it should. When you set the hook on larger size fish you don't get that crinkle sound. When the fish takes drag it's silent and doesn't tell everyone within 50yards that you hooked the Lochness monster. I really like that!!! As you mentioned,it does have a intriquit external drag brakes system and that does weigh heavy for me. I can throw something as light as 1/5th oz to something 1.3ozs heavy so I don't care about it's ability at all!! Bass Pro Shop is made by a company that makes stuff like Shimano. They field test it substantially before they put it on the market. I really like that as well!!! Daiwa's been my favorite for almost 40yrs. They are real critical about what they put out. Now there's so many brands out that it's literally mind boggling!!. I found that I like Okuma. They have a nice spinning reel but there has been some people that said they last about a year then they act up. I love Lew's!!! Have the original speed reel that started their business into where they are now. I retired it so I can replace the bearings. It's a little noisy now where it wasn't for 40+ years. People judge me when they see it. I laugh because they have these Ryobis that I feel are trash and you hear the reel talking when you reel it in. It's sounds like a " yinko yinko yanko" sound. I always say " your reel needs a stiff drink, it's had a tough time around the lake today". I'm so glad you you put this video out. I want one of those but nobody I know has one. I liked the feel of them and they are quiet. Just needed to hear what they do after a year of experience with it. You hit it all on the head.👍 Can't ask for anything better. Now to watch for the sales so I can save the money for good line. I still don't see the need for braid on a baitcaster yet. I know it cast farther but I am old school oriented and don't like stopping to tie on leaders. Again, thank you for your help. Been wanting a KastKing Royal or Legend but I'll wait until I know more. My Black Max and Silver Max are sweet arsenals and do the trick.
Wait for the classic sale at the end if March. $49 and this is a good reel with an aluminum frame. A lot of the less expensive reels are all graphite. Hope this helped man 👊
@@DEBOSFishing thank you sir. I'm putting money back already. Gotta have another rig I can setup for strictly worm fishing. I have one now but its a Abu Garcia C3 5500. I want to change it to a live bait setup
I bought this very reel this fall. Although I’ve thrown it a few times, I haven’t had a chance to really break it in; thank you for the review and especially for the explanation on the braking system. I will say this, it pairs very nicely with the Shimano SLX rod! This video was very helpful and appreciate ya brother!
Bro this is an awesome vid. I used to swear by bass pro gear. Can’t go wrong for beginner to intermediate. Thanks for taking the time to make this video feeshin friend
My cousin gave me this reel a couple of summers ago, my first baitcaster reel and it was lefty retrieve! So far I’ve liked it but it needs some TLC, thank god for debos baitcaster servicing videos 🤙🏼🎣🤙🏼🎣🤙🏼
bought two last year at 49.00(along with the pro qualifier rods, for 74.00) for back ups, haven't used them yet but I'm glad to see the review on them. Thanks
This is my favorite reel I own. Used it 2 years now and still casts flawlessly! The new blue pro qualifier reel is just not the same as that PQ2. BUT the Extreme reel they have now.. Casts a freakin mile. Excited to run the Extreme this year!
I got one of these last year due to Tackle Junkie’s recommendation, I was very pleased with it. I am going to keep my eye open to see if they have them again this year and pick up another one.
I bought one back in late 2016 and Its actually a pretty good reel and landed many, many fish. About 2 years ago the bearing in the side plate s#it the bed and came apart. Fortunately I had a couple worn out reels in my house and the pro qualifier shared the same bearings. I take it out still from time to time, and it still feels as good as the day I bought it, though its mostly retired now. I'll pass it on to a friend when they're ready to move up to a casting reel.
... Bass, stripers, snakeheads fishing- Upper Chesapeake Bay and tributaries. Fresh to brackish water. A few years ago when in the market for new reels, I researched and changed from Lews (that I started with and loved). The PQ 2 had VERY high positive reviews and did not break the bank. I bought the PQ 2. PQC10SA, right hand, 5.6:1. I have 9 of them and are searching now to see the sale price with the spring trade in deal and my buy a couple more. I highly recommend them. Jeff
My favorite reel. Does everything I need it to. Never had a bad one. A few years back they were made in Korea, then China. Haven't noticed a difference in either one. With 10lb Trilene XL, it's perfect for the type of fishing I do. This year, they are 79.99 with a trade in during their Spring Classic sale. I also have the same one you reviewed, and I paid the same price. Wish I bought a dozen back then!
I used a Lew's Tournament MB for a little more than a year, which has a nearly identical "dual braking" system. I really grew to dislike it and eventually sold it because of the wild inconsistency of the braking power, primarily from the centrifugal brakes. My analysis is that since they are spring-loaded, the brake tabs provide an "all or nothing" type of braking. As soon as the centrifugal force is not strong enough to move the tabs out on the springs, you lose the centrifugal braking altogether. This is in contrast to traditional centrifugal brakes which are loose and fly outwards proportionally to the rotational speed of the spool, providing high braking force at high RPMs and lower braking as the spool slows. The Lew's ACB and Shimano SVS/VBS systems are far superior and more consistent IMO. I think "dual braking" is used as a marketing term because "dual" sounds better than "single", but in this case I think it's inferior.
I agree with the free swinging brakes being more consistent. That's why you see that system on the higher priced Lew's reels. I'm a bit befuddled because the mach crush has the dual brakes and that thing will BOMB a lure. I'll have to compare those to the brakes on this 🤔
Nice review! Almost bought this last fall when it was on sale but I ended up holding out. If it goes on sale again, may pick this up. Thanks for the review!
I'm going back fishing after I recover from my surgery, just grab the 7:5.1 with the rod for $80 on FB market! Brand new!!! Same day I got a Berkeley rod for Goodwill for 2bucks!!! Reel is on its way from Amazon. Love your videos brother 🤘🏻🖤🤘🏻
I have 3 of the original pro qualifiers. Good reels, never had a problem with it breaking. Some of the reels are over 6 years old. Nothing fancy but pretty indestructible
@@Phaminator525 Just the regular one that's $100. If you like throwing smaller baits though I'd recommend getting the MGL 70 that's $150. You can launch a weightless senko like it's a 1/2 oz weight lol.
@@kdot2427 ahh I see thanks for the recommendation! I might buy that one next. Just bought the SLX regular one tho! Excited since it'll be my first baitcaster
@@Phaminator525 You picked a great one. Once you get used to the brake settings you can throw bombs and make short pitches and flips without making any setting changes. My best advice for a first time baitcaster user would be to start with 4 or 5 brakes engaged until you get used to casting. Then when you feel like you're ready to throw further drop down to 3 or 4. Never go 2 brakes unless you're a psycho lol
I accidentally got the left one so I will buy the right hand one just to change hands. I got the original colors too and love it. It is in my top 5 for sure.
I really like my Pro Qualifier 2’s. I usually have them set with 3 on 3 off for the centrifugal brakes, and the magnetic set around 7. I do run the spool tension knob a little loose. Can’t beat them for $50 (usually twice a year). I have upgraded a couple with ceramic bearings, carbontex drag washers, and a 95 mm Lew’s Winn grip handle & I love them.
Nice review! I did watch Bass Junky’s video and will keep this reel on my radar. It is on sale for $69.99 right now for Black Friday but it sounds like if you wait a few months it will be even cheaper around the Classic. Thanks for the review!
Lew’s is made by Doyo Korea and bass pro is made by the same company, hence why people say Lew’s makes BPS reels. Awesome vid with great info as always Debo, keep it up.
Yep, Doyo is the place. I test the reel for what it is. I've had amazing luck with my Lew's regardless of where they are made. This reel is a great budget option at $49!
I run 5 slx reels and havent had a problem. Best budget reel imo. None of mine are treated nice either. 2 are on med heavy rods, 2 on heavy, and one on an ex heavy.
I think any reel at that pric3 point that performs half decent and lasts a year is worth the money . I have bought other reels at that price point and they are basically trash after a yr of use . Imo i have found when you get to that $100 price point the quality jumps up significantly . 2 of my favorite reels I have a bunch of are the Lews LFS speed spool and the SLX . I think imo those 2 are gard to beat at the $100 price point. I am going to pick one up at the classic sale for my 10yr old to use this year . He made the jump to baitcasters last season and I bought him the Lews American Hero combo at like $75 for rod and reel . He used it all year and works great still. The abuse a 10yr old puts on his stuff ,well you can imagine lol. He will be excited to get it though and I can help him with the breaks as well . Awesome review and thanks for sharing your opinion on it .
I would start how I had it. I know others said they didn't need that many on but I did? You can always turn some off slowly. If you start wide open...good chance of a birdnest 😯
I have two of the silver and gold. They don’t cast well. I’m very interest in the Shimano. Thinking 🤔 about going with Shimano exclusive. What’s your thoughts 💭 on the durability’s of the product? Talking about $99.99 Shimano.
Also I actually found the 2 systems made it easier for me to dial in. It did take a lot of trial and error tho. With my SLX it takes a lot more thumb control and just general experience to get it set with just one brake system.
Great review Debo! I bought some last year as backup reels. You can't really beat the deal on them for $49 bucks. If they go back on sale this year, will probably pick up some more. Keep up the great work buddy! 👍
I can buy any reel I want and this reel isn’t the best but I fish them regularly because they cast well when dialed in and are smooth/strong at landing the 3 to 7 lb bass I catch. I’ve know people who’ve caught Ten pounders on Zebco 202s and 33s.
Nice review man! I have this reel paired up with a bassX and it does its job. I think it's a great pick up when it's on sale $79 or less. For $100 there are better options.
I love my qualifier but right now im not sure whats going on with it i noticed one of the gears in it is plastic and the teeth on it rounded it over and say you get stuck when fishing and you do the bow and arrow trick the spool will engage and where the spool will spin and you get a nasty backlash idk whats going on with it
Ill have to look into that i just seen the gear how its all rolled over and thought maybe that had something to do with it ill try and send some pics and send them to ya
Hello. I just bought one. A red version but it’s the same one. This is my very first bait caster, do you have a video better explaining the dual brakes and the side tensioner? I have been fishing since I was a kid, I’ve only used open face ( spinning reel). Your video is very informative tho. So thanks for that.
Awesome vid as always! Very helpful since I am back in to baitcasting after many years. Wish I would have stuck with it as a kid but the spinning seemed less of a headache.😆 I am So hooked now on baitcasting and all your info and videos have got me to a new level mentally on understanding the functionality and usefulness of not just the reel but having different combos in general. I am in the process of acquiring more setups to help me in the bank fishing category. Thanks again Debo! Fish On Feeshin Friends!
Late to this video. But would greasing the reel help, since it does give you a fill spot. I noticed they have them on sale now and was thinking of getting one.
Great review. Especially with the BPS Spring Fishing Classic sale coming up towards the end of March this year. (Yea it's later than other years) Yea I picked one of these up for $49 or there abouts. Definitely worth the money when on sale, but still at $99 price point is still worth it. As for the brakes, I keep my centrifugal brakes at 2 pins, and magnetic at like 6 / 7, spool tensioner loose. However to be honest, I only use it for 1/2oz (plus or minus) baits.... spinnerbait, bladed jigs, ect. I think I rely on thumb control more than the brakes. Not sure myself. But as you pointed out, for a beginner who might have only one or two rods, it might get annoying with the two brake system everytime you change lures. But yea, overall it worth the price especially when on sale.
From everything I see, this is just a Doyo. Pretty much the same as many Lew's, which are also Doyo's. Not a knock, though. Many great reels are made in the Doyo factory. I just got the Lew's Super Duty 300. It has the exact same braking system and I also noticed I have to run the brakes pretty high. 3 or 4 on internally and 8+ on the dial. Very different from how I run my shimano brakes. With Shimano's VBS I only need 2 out of 6 internal brakes and with their SVS I only need 2 internal and like 2 on the dial. I guess Shimano's centrifugal brakes are much more powerful than these Doyo ones. But I'm getting the same distance throwing large swimbaits with the Lew's as I am with Shimano's throwing jerkbaits and other well casting lures.
Yeah, Doyo is the factory. I like to test the reel for what it is. Like you said, a lot of good reels come out of there. I may pick that super duty up for some swimbaits!
@@DEBOSFishing ebay had a 10% off code so I got it for $156 shipped. code was "taketenoff". try it out, it might still work. i only got it like a week ago so it could still be active.
What’s the best reel to set up for the money that you really would buy again . 200 bucks or less , I fish most chatterbaits , soft plastics , topwater. Thanks
That's the problem. Best. Best for him may not be best for you. Just go to a store and feel out the combos and rods and reels separate. Look at the action feel and weight.
I would say the SLX reel paired with a St. Croix BassX rod. Great price point for the quality. Also, Dobyn’s Fury rod at $119 is a terrific rod at all actions.
Mark Chambers I have both rods, and the BassX, I think is the most affordable St. Croix without losing quality or much feel. However, If I had to choose 1, I think I’d still go with Dobyn’s Fury
Between this reel and the Speed Spool LFS, both being at the $100 price point (the Pro Qualifier is originally $99.99 but now onsale at BP for 69.97), which would you recommend?
Debo, Check out The Reel Test, he just did a 5 reel comparo revealed Lew’s, Revo, Pflueger and many others are all made by the same OEM. Thereby they share a lot of components. Nice review, as someone who is re-entering the baitcast world after a very long time. I can’t get enough information. The Reel Test suggested with the dual brake system. You may be able to turn off the internal brakes and just use the external magnetic brakes for a newbie until they get more experience.
Debo, I was a big fan of the Pflueger President spinning reel. I spin tested about 20 at Cabela’s and bought the smoothest one I could find. It was like butter until one day I dropped it on a sand bar in a couple feet of water. It filled with sand and was never the same. Purchased another and it was no where like the original nice but not quite the same. In this world of mass produced products that is common. Everyone who used the original swore it was a great reel and must have cost a lot of money. It was better than reels costing twice as much. I compared it to a Quantum Smoke the reel I was at Cabela’s to buy and they did not compare, so I walked away with the President. Now I have a Lew’s Speed Spin (generic Lew’s terminology) with 12 bearings that is as smooth as silk but they do not make this model anymore. I should have purchased 2 when they were available. The Lew’s was on sale for less money than the Pflueger, I think I paid about $35 for it. I did not realize it was a closeout at the time. All of these reels may come from the same factory yet exhibit different performance and in the case of the President when the same model is compared side by side. I purchased the President XT on sale to replace the original and I wish every day I use it I did not drop my other rig overboard.
Hey debo is the abu Garcia revo x a good reel? I just got one off fishing care packages for 47$ shipped. Is that a good score? Good reel? Thanks buddy!
I have a ton of PQ and they are a great reel. Every other year BP put's them on sale for 49 buck during the Spring sale. The breaks are always weak and the drag is never smooth. That's my knocks.
I’ve been looking at this Reel for a while and on the EBay they are extremely reasonable. Did you ever use this Reel for the Topwater Frog?? It seems like it would be good for that.
I don't think so. I believe they're made in the same factory but not by them. That's how it works for baitcasters...I'd guess the same for spinning. Thanks for watching!
I recently pulled out my bps pq2 that is around 10 years old but was hardly ever used cause I never got it set up properly and went back to spinning gear. It’s my only baitcaster. I completely forgot about the brakes under the side cover, but that makes me happy because I have more to adjust and I still have a chance to get it figured out. Also, do you recommend mono, floro, or braid with a leader? I think I have 12 pound straight floro on the spool. Could that possibly be part of my problem?
I use these and love 'em. I usually buy one every year even though I don't need it. I set 3 of the brake thingys on and 3 off, then set the spool tension as needed. I set the dial at about 7-8 and forget about it. I use 10lb Trilene XL (not a fan of the XT) and it handles crankbaits, topwaters and unweighted worms (6") perfectly. For me, and the fact I usually never encounter bass over 5 lbs, it's the perfect set up. I also use the BP Pro Tourney rods. Work great and the price is right (around $50). Perfect combo.
Sounds like a very capable reel, much like a good 2nd string Quaterback that can run the team with no problem. If they were to go on sale at 50% off again, even if you don't need another reel, we buy it just because, haha.
I have 2 of these; one in each speed. Mine have been super smooth and quiet...so far. I haven't had mine as long as you have so we'll see how mine fare over the next few months. As for the DBS and your settings; mine are COMPLETELY opposite. I'm not known for using super loose settings and probably set mine a little tighter than you do. So when you opened it up and showed that you had 4 of the 6 centrifugal brakes on and the mags up to 8, my first thought was, "Geez, he must have had some terrible wind." I literally use one centri. with mags at 5 for weightless stick baits in normal conditions. Today was really windy so I upped centri. to 2 and my mags at 6 1/2. Both reels perform the exact same so I'm wondering if BPS had some QC issues with the braking system that have been fixed on newer models. My biggest con with this reel is the nose. When I wrap my pointer finger around the nose of the reel, the line guide/worm gear adjustment hits my finger. I wear fishing gloves so if I move my finger higher to miss the line guide, the glove interferes with the line and how it spools. I've made adjustments to my grip, but if the nose was 1/8" longer or the adjustment an 1/8" shorter this would be a non-issue. None of my other reels have this issue so it's unnatural for me to adjust my grip when I pick these up. Not a game changer, just a pet peeve of sorts.
Hmmm, I'm not sure. I generally keep my reels loose but this one I couldn't or it would blow up. Yeah, grip can depend on the person. This one was fine for me but I've got some that hit my finger and I dont love it!
I almost got that reel last month but passed because of the 10# max drag. I have one reel with duel brakes and yes, it was finicky to me on the set up. Thanks for sharing.
Lovely Debo you are the best really good review thanks for your time advice and guidance keep up the good work , my wife asked why don't you give us a shout out I said I don't know 😂😂😂😂 👊 no fishing for us this weekend we have horrible weather in the UK thanks Debo God bless you and your family 🙏
I have the bass pro tournament special and I have the centrifugal all the way off,and magnetic brakes on min. I like mine spool knob where there's about 1/8 in play in the spool. I wouldn't suggest that for anyone that doesn't have at least 5 years of experience on a bait casting reel......
Hey Debo - Any interest in giving the KastKing Royale Legend II 7.2:1 (R hand) a go? I bought one from Amazon a little over a month ago and have had no chance to use it yet. Your review and opinion would be far more useful than my own (I have only owned this 1 Baitcasting reel [if you don't include the foolish purchase of a $425 Shimano gold color one I bought in 1992 or 1993 but couldn't figure out how it worked and everyone including ever fisherman I asked in Massachusetts claimed they'd never seen such a thing... Even the 15 or so who were using as much right in front of me...] and set it up so it doesn't birds nest when I just press the button with a lure & weights on it, but have had no chance to use it yet except for changing the handle out to a carbon fiber one with what I thought were larger handles, but weren't). I'd send it to you, you can give it a run through and a try and make any needed changes then just send it back before May rolls around when I can use it. Any interest?
I haven't used that one. I'm guessing it just has magnetic brakes. I'd set the spool tension so there is no side to side play. Set the external brakes to 9 and work your way down. Good luck man!
@@DEBOSFishing I set it already, without issue. Mag brakes are at 5/10 (no spiders at landing so long as I thumb the spool within a second or 2 of the lure hitting the ground or water [haven't taken it to the water yet due to cold & ice]). I set the tension just higher than when it's not spidering if I press the release and the lure hits the ground. Setup wasn't an issue, I was offering it to you to give it a try if you wanted. I mainly fish Trout (my St Croix Avid 7" Ultralight, Fast and Shimano Stradic 2500 CI4+ are my babies) so it isn't all that useful to me. I bought it for those times when there are no Trout around but tons of Pickerel, the annoying Sunfish species which swallow everything in front of them (AKA Large Mouth Bass), Perch and so on. I suppose I could ignore it until June or July if you needed that long, but you expressed no interest in it within your above reply. Should I take that to mean (as I easily suspect) you don't have any interest in giving this model of brand new, unused reel a try?
No joke! I am a Trout man almost exclusively (1 reel & 2 of the rods are not shown in this photo - I own 3 of the Stradic CI4+ 2500 HG FL's [along with 3 extra spools for each so that I can very quickly change between 2 Lbs, 4 Lbs, 6Lbs and 8Lbs Fluorocarbon on each of my Stradics): photos.app.goo.gl/RygUCT8PDnTpRdjT9 So, loaning you my brand new KastKing Royale Legend II Right retrieve, 7.2:1 makes sense. I bought it in January (like a fool - "Hey meathead! Why not buy a thing you can't use for many months so that you watch as your warranty spins down the toilet needlessly? You [meaning myself] dummy!") and would rather see it put to great use by someone like yourself rather than just lose the warranty. You can use it as long as you feel you need, so long as I may get some use in 2020 and you replace any damaged or warned out parts like bearings before sending it back to me. Heck, I'd even throw in my brand new Cadence BC6 7' Medium Heavy, Fast rod to use with and without it if you wanted. But I feel pretty certain you'd have no use for the rod as you own a ton of rods which you love (making this one possibly useless to you). Bottom line, I'm offering the reel (and rod if you want it to try as well) to try and use for a few months to many months so long as when you're done you repair any damaged or warn functional parts before sending it back (meaning if the bearing wore down, replace them before sending it back to me. If you chose something like ceramic bearings to replace the original, then warn out bearings I would be fine with that and very likely would cover a portion to a large portion of the part cost). I'm giving you full freedom with it so long as it's brought back to great condition before returned. I fully understand if the answer in no. As far as I know, you have sponsorship from KastKing so you could probably get one for nothing (this is why I am aware the answer is likely no thanks, David).
just got one.. spent 80$ !! man that 50$ sale was a deal. its my first bait caster just figured out how to cast a lure with out birdsnest lol so thats good. the blue spool tension knob, if its tight you cant put the magnetic brake cap on.. i thought it was broken untill i loosend it and it went back on im just playing with the settings trying to figure it out
DEBO'S Fishing ok. Thanks man. I have a 7’2 medium rod with a 6.4:1 reel on it, but have been thinking of getting a faster reel to use for worms and stuff like that. Do you have any ideas or preferences? I would appreciate any insight
DEBO'S Fishing I’m thinking 100 or less. Just something to get the job done. If I was fishing tournaments and making money, I would be willing to spend more, ya know?
Don't like the new side plate method Bass Pro is using - it might be quicker removing but not as secure reattaching. I have a couple of these older reels, updated with ceramic bearings and removed the magnetic brake. They're actually really nice feeling and I still use them in spite of having many newer and higher end reels lately.
Yeah, I noticed it didn't want to click. The Lew's is the same and I've never had an issue. Still a good pick at $49! Just make sure that baby is on tight.
I really wish I could show you how I have mine set up because I only use one of the centrifugal brakes and none of the magnetic brakes unless I'm casting into the wind and even then I use the "Control" knob more often than not. And I can go from roll casting a squarebill along the bank to bombing a lipless a country mile. If you ever come down to Tennessee (Chickamauga, Dale Hollow, etc.) I'd love to fish with you and show you how I set mine up
I tried going less with mine but it blew up. Not sure what the deal was because I usually run my reels pretty loose. Still a good pick up at $49 for sure.
@@DEBOSFishing I think it's because I'm a light power caster. I don't whip my baits out there. It's more of a finesse fling, a power lob. I also sidearm most of my casts due to so much hanging cover around my bodies of water
Bass pro, lews, Abu Garcia, and pflueger are all made in the same facility in Korea. That is why they all share the same similar frame and braking systems.
I have the pro qualifier to its the gold in silver color like you but it's gold not blue I got it last year used it for the whole year had to return the 1st one I got cause its drag system was broken in the 2nd 1 I got its left handed and I feel like I thought when You tighten your drag you're supposed to go clockwise but to tighten the drag on this 1 on its left handed is counter clockwise is that correct or is there something wrong with the real otherwise that it's my best real that I have it cast very far smooth and I've never lubed it and I've dropped it into the water a few times please let me know debo thanks or if anybody else knows please comment let me know appreciate it o ya its 6.8.1 also
Nice review man. I have been curious about their brand but also skeptical since it seems like they are trying to push it down your throat. Most times they aren’t competitive with well known name brands and I’m Leary to stray from a dependable line.
Solid review brother! For the internal brakes I normally set them to 4 like you did and leave them. Appreciate the shout out! You THE MAN! 👊💪
The thanks goes to you for the recommendation. At $49 that's a steal for this reel! Appreciate you watching brother 👊
How u change internal brakws
How do you change the internal brakes?
100% agree. There is a point of diminishing returns when it comes to more expensive reels. Weight, features, brakes, etc. I smell a vid coming soon!
Good info here that u commented on Debo's channel. Is there a website etc where i could go to to learn how to perform maintenance and lube etc to my baitcaster reels and spinning reels? Thank u
@@masfishing1 I've made two detailed vids on my channel. Also check out @TACKLEJUNKY81
Check out Tackle Advisors!! Great channel!!
I work for bass pro. I’ve never had to use 4 brakes, most of the time I do 2 and your not advised but you can do one. It casts really far. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Yeah, solid option at $49!
The thanks goes all to you for watching and always supporting! Tight lines my friend 👊👊👊
I think the pro qualifiers the best reel on the market for the price
$49 it's a great budget option!
I love em.
Agreed, at $49 this is a great option for someone on a budget!
Yes, made in the same factory. I've had great luck with my LFS so I'm ok with it being like that 😂
This thing is a steal for $49, but, as a baitcasting newbie, I had a really hard time setting the brakes up. Thanks for explaining the process so clearly Debo. I can’t wait for the first 60 degree day to try it out!
It's a great deal at $49. I can't wait for that warm weather too!
Appreciate that a lot man. I'm just a dude who loves to nerd out with fishing tackle 😂👊👊👊
I appreciate the help with my reel. Keep up that good information.
You're welcome and thanks for watching!
You're welcome and thanks for watching. Go put that reel to work!
I have 3 of the original Pro Qualifiers and bought 2 of these PQ2 when they went on sale. I have been pleased with all of them.
This one preformed well for me!
Thanks Debo I was able to properly adjust my breaks settings now it’s one of my favorites baitcaster.
Awesome, glad this helped! 👊👊👊
I got one of these on sale a couple of weeks ago after my dad turned me on to them, and like it so far. Thanks for the review D!
It worked well for me! Thanks for watching 👊
Bro this is an awesome vid. I used to swear by bass pro gear. Can’t go wrong for beginner to intermediate. Thanks for taking the time to make this video feeshin friend
Yeah, for the weekend angler this will do what you need it to for sure!
Thanks
Worked well for me at $49!
This is my favorite reel I own. Used it 2 years now and still casts flawlessly! The new blue pro qualifier reel is just not the same as that PQ2. BUT the Extreme reel they have now.. Casts a freakin mile. Excited to run the Extreme this year!
Great review!! Nice to see you showing some love for Tacklejunky81!!!!!!
Thank you man. Jim is a good dude!
I got one of these last year due to Tackle Junkie’s recommendation, I was very pleased with it. I am going to keep my eye open to see if they have them again this year and pick up another one.
Yeah, $49 it's a solid option for sure!
DEBO'S Fishing it was $59 here in Canada but still worth it IMHO
Thank you Debo for the review it’s been one I have def been looking for. I know we talked about them a lot and they are great reels. Thanks again.
You're welcome man. Yeah, grab them at 50% and it's a steal!
You really take the time to learn the details about things. Good for you!
I'm a fishing nerd...I admit it 😂
One of the best reel review videos I have seen. Nice job. Will have to check out your other review videos.
Thank you sir, appreciate you watching!
Another fine comparison and review. Keep it up, Debo!
Appreciate that a lot man 👊
I'll have to compare those to the brakes on this 🤔
Great review, I like that you talk fast, and your a straight shooter!
Thanks for the information shared.....
You're welcome and thanks for watching 👊
Nice review! Almost bought this last fall when it was on sale but I ended up holding out. If it goes on sale again, may pick this up. Thanks for the review!
It has been sold for $49! Thanks for watching man 👊
Thank you so much for doing this video! I’ve been waiting for an actual in depth review on this reel for ever! Thanks Debo!🎣
You're very welcome man!
Hell yeah man, can't pass those deals up! Thanks for watching and good luck!
I have 3 of the original pro qualifiers. Good reels, never had a problem with it breaking. Some of the reels are over 6 years old. Nothing fancy but pretty indestructible
Yeah, for the price this is a solid option. Wait for that 50% off sale!
DEBO'S Fishing probably March 15th I would imagine. I now use the “higher end” bass pro reels, carbonlight, Johnny Morris signature, and platinum 😂
In all, this video just made me more confident in my purchase of 2 SLX reels for my first baitcasters. They are SO smooth and so simple.
SLX is a hard reel to beat for $100 for sure. Mine has done great too!
Which version of the SLX did you get?
I bought one last year during the classic I wish I bought more. Really like the reel.
Yeah, it had been solid for $49!
I accidentally got the left one so I will buy the right hand one just to change hands. I got the original colors too and love it. It is in my top 5 for sure.
Oh, one more thing to add; if/when these go on sale again for $49, I'll definitely be buying 2 more.
Great deal at $49 IMO!
Nice! What winn handle did you put on it? I love those grips? The big round ones? Yeah, at $49 it has been solid!
DEBO'S Fishing the Lew’s Winn grip handles fit. My Lew’s Mach Crush is build almost identical to the Pro Qualifier’s.
Yessssss. I’ve been waiting for this reel. Thank you
You're welcome, hope you enjoyed man!
The PQ2 is a solid reel for the regular price and one of the best buys when its on sale IMO.
Great deal at $49!
I own one of these but I am considering an slx so I have been waiting for this review!
I've got the whole slx line up bro and do yourself a favor and get it
@@bdaquatics7584 ok will do. Got a DSG gift card so I'll use that and if I like it I'll get another one by trading in my old pfleuger
Happy with my SLX so far.
I run 5 slx reels and havent had a problem. Best budget reel imo. None of mine are treated nice either. 2 are on med heavy rods, 2 on heavy, and one on an ex heavy.
The SLX is the best at throwing light lures in my experience. The PQ2 is a great all around worker but not as refined as the SLX IMO.
Great review! I'm not currently in the market for a new reel, BUT this'll be something to keep in mind when I am.
Thanks for the info!
Yeah man, for the price it's a great nab at $49!
I agree. Generally the $100 price point you get an aluminum frame, upgraded brakes, etc.
I was seriously thinking of getting one. What’s a good place to start with setting the brakes ?
I would start how I had it. I know others said they didn't need that many on but I did? You can always turn some off slowly. If you start wide open...good chance of a birdnest 😯
Debo! Was donated a Daiwa Arid Coastal 100HSLA but needs bearings replaced. Should I save my $ and try to find this reel at that price?
Bearings are extremely cheap. Depends on how old it is and condition.
Yeah, I agree the reels with only centrifugal brakes take a bit more thumb control. Once you get use to them....they're great!
Great review Debo! I bought some last year as backup reels. You can't really beat the deal on them for $49 bucks. If they go back on sale this year, will probably pick up some more. Keep up the great work buddy! 👍
Yessir, at $49 they are a great budget option!
Yeah, I think at $100 there are others that beat it out. At $49 it's well worth it though!
I love my qualifier but right now im not sure whats going on with it i noticed one of the gears in it is plastic and the teeth on it rounded it over and say you get stuck when fishing and you do the bow and arrow trick the spool will engage and where the spool will spin and you get a nasty backlash idk whats going on with it
Hmmm...usually that's a dirty anti-reverse when it just slips out line. There are no plastic gears that control the spool.
(Yea it's later than other years)
Yea I picked one of these up for $49 or there abouts.
Yeah, I can't complain for it being a $49 reel. A lot better than other options at $49.
Do u think this reel would be good for casting lighter lures for smallmouth finesse fishing? If not what do u recommend?
Tacklejunkie stands by them
Yeah, he is how I heard about it. Great option at $49!
What is a good inexpensive reel that you recommend
Great review. I see lots of these on open market for sale. But I live near a bass pro and been wanting to transition to a bait caster.
YakAngler 4:19 I really like St Croix rods . I have old ambassador 5500 D reels , since 1973 . Figured it’s time to upgrade 7:1 ratios 😁🤙 thanks 😊
Mark Chambers I have both rods, and the BassX, I think is the most affordable St. Croix without losing quality or much feel. However, If I had to choose 1, I think I’d still go with Dobyn’s Fury
YakAngler 4:19 ok 👌
How does the Slx XT balance on the Intenza? I am thinking about picking up the 7’3 heavy and need to know about the balance
I can show that. That's one of the next I'm doing. Hit me up on IG and I can send you a pic. I like that combo.
Between this reel and the Speed Spool LFS, both being at the $100 price point (the Pro Qualifier is originally $99.99 but now onsale at BP for 69.97), which would you recommend?
Debo,
Check out The Reel Test, he just did a 5 reel comparo revealed Lew’s, Revo, Pflueger and many others are all made by the same OEM.
Yep, they are all made in the Doyo factor I believe. Similar parts but I still like to test the reel for what it is. This one was great for being $49.
Debo,
I was a big fan of the Pflueger President spinning reel.
I've never fished with a bait casting reel. Thanks for the informative video . Any advice on if I should make this reel my 1st bait caster
If you can get it for 50 id buy it and pair it with a good rod. For 100 id go to something different like the slx.
Thanks for watching. This is a great pick at $49.
Doyo reels makes both of them including Abu and Pflueger as well. Great review of this reel. Great reels still though awesome job!
Hey Debo whats your opinion on ardent reels. I am looking at apex grand. I use Lews, ranging from lfs to team lews lite. Ardent worth trying out ?
Great video, I almost pulled the trigger on one but they sold out on their last sale.
They should do it again at the end of March. The classic sale is when they normally do it!
I have a ton of PQ and they are a great reel. Every other year BP put's them on sale for 49 buck during the Spring sale. The breaks are always weak and the drag is never smooth. That's my knocks.
i got one as a gift thanks for the review!
Awesome video. My wife just bought me one as gift. And it's my first time with a baitcaster. Tips on how to set the brake system?
I’ve been looking at this Reel for a while and on the EBay they are extremely reasonable. Did you ever use this Reel for the Topwater Frog?? It seems like it would be good for that.
Got the bass pro mega cast I like it. Not the best but good for the price
I haven't tried that one.
@@DEBOSFishingI like it a great combo for the $60 price
also did you buy the speed demon elite? thats coming out in march? i cant wait, if you do can u do review!?
Nope, didn't get that one.
I also had problems with the brakes seems not to want to cast light lures as well as a slx
No beating the SLX with light lures at $100 IMO!
Been thinking about it for my son. Last I checked, it was on sale for $69
Wait for the classic sale at the end of March...should be $49.
Guy at cabela's told me that quantum makes the bps spinning reels, not sure if that is the same for baitcasters
I don't think so. I believe they're made in the same factory but not by them. That's how it works for baitcasters...I'd guess the same for spinning. Thanks for watching!
@@DEBOSFishing the guy also was trying to sell me a pfleuger president over a stradic lol so maybe his fishing knowledge wasnt the best.
Hahah great analogy my friend! It has been solid for me thus far! Hope you're catching some good fish this weekend!
@@DEBOSFishing I might add too that I fish straight braid so I'm sure my spools are spinning much faster than ones with mono or fluro.
I almost got that reel last month but passed because of the 10# max drag. I have one reel with duel brakes and yes, it was finicky to me on the set up. Thanks for sharing.
At $49 this is a great budget option IMO. At regular $100 price there are reels I like better.
Love your videos I finally got me my first fish of the year
Nice man! I'm still trying to get my first bass. Hopefully this weekend!
How do u turn the Inside break up to help with backlashing wash givin one of these its my first baitcaster
Thank you man! I have you on the list! I've got a number of folks so it's just a matter of time. Appreciate you always watching!
Pleasure Debo we love you video's
I have the bass pro tournament special and I have the centrifugal all the way off,and magnetic brakes on min. I like mine spool knob where there's about 1/8 in play in the spool. I wouldn't suggest that for anyone that doesn't have at least 5 years of experience on a bait casting reel......
Great advice...that's birdnest city without precise thumb control! 😂 Thanks for watching man.
No joke! I am a Trout man almost exclusively (1 reel & 2 of the rods are not shown in this photo - I own 3 of the Stradic CI4+ 2500 HG FL's [along with 3 extra spools for each so that I can very quickly change between 2 Lbs, 4 Lbs, 6Lbs and 8Lbs Fluorocarbon on each of my Stradics): photos.app.goo.gl/RygUCT8PDnTpRdjT9
So, loaning you my brand new KastKing Royale Legend II Right retrieve, 7.2:1 makes sense.
As far as I know, you have sponsorship from KastKing so you could probably get one for nothing (this is why I am aware the answer is likely no thanks, David).
just got one.. spent 80$ !! man that 50$ sale was a deal.
its my first bait caster just figured out how to cast a lure with out birdsnest lol so thats good.
the blue spool tension knob, if its tight you cant put the magnetic brake cap on.. i thought it was broken untill i loosend it and it went back on
im just playing with the settings trying to figure it out
Debo, have you used the Diawa cr80? I’ve been thinking of getting one and just would like some input. I’ve heard they are pretty good for the price
I haven't but I did a review of the CG 80. Similar reel and it worked well.
I haven't but I did a review of the CG 80. Similar reel and it worked well.
DEBO'S Fishing ok. Thanks man. I have a 7’2 medium rod with a 6.4:1 reel on it, but have been thinking of getting a faster reel to use for worms and stuff like that. Do you have any ideas or preferences? I would appreciate any insight
@@Casting_not_catching a whole different reel? What price range?
My favorite !! Still use my round 1992 pro qualifier pq1000 lol ! Beats most of the reels under 100 $. Today lol !! 😎
It was a good reel for me throughout the year!
@@DEBOSFishing hope there on sail this year !!! U know when ????
@@rosshall312 generally the bassmaster classic sale. That's at the end of March this year.
how is this reel compared to the Abu Garcia MLF reel?
Now if I can just get skipping and flipping down I'll have the casting techniques finished
Bass pro, lews, Abu Garcia, and pflueger are all made in the same facility in Korea. That is why they all share the same similar frame and braking systems.
China/korea...Doyo is the factory. I like to test the reel for what it is. This one did good for $49 in my use. Thanks for watching.
Yeah, I was the same way. This was my first bass pro reel. At $49 I was happy with how it preformed!
Are these reels good for musky hunting
Why not a Quantum Smoke S3 baitcaster reel. One of the best reels on the market! For the money. Maybe a Quantum ACCURIST PT S3 reel 7 to1to1. Shawn
