@@PursuitPerfectSystem I should be clear: The Monster cable one sounded out of phase. I didn't claim to "know" they were out of phase, I said "I think" they're out of phase.
I made a video about cables and I said that cables CAN change the sound, but its tough to tell if the change is for the better or for worse.
If a company who makes cables uses passive electronics in their cables, can it change the sound? Yes! How will it affect the sound? I don't know. Is it improving or degrading or just adding coloration? I don't know. That's all I'm saying.

@TransmissionLineDesigns I like your video. I thought for a spare of the moment vid it was a good comparison. I didn't see volume levels being changed and I could hear a difference without a doubt. It is hard to pick up on youtube as audio quality is terrible from this source. I do however listen through a good Chord DAC into a Burson headamp to Grado high end cans.
I think people need to stop and think about this a bit. Sure cheap speaker cable will do the job and can sound good but in certain circumstances. If this system is entry level there isn't a problem using basic cables. Better or more expensive cables just aren't going to improve things as a system is only as strong as it's weakest link. Like putting high end tyres on an entry level car.
The cables will only start to show improvements as the system itself improves in quality and performance. And as you have said, just because it is more expensive doesn't make it automatically better. System synergy plays a bit part so finding the cable that is most compatible is more important than cost.
As to 'who would pay thousands of dollars for a cable'? Lots of people would. It's all relative to what the person earns. If you're on $500 000 a year, a $5k cable isn't going to be a problem. And if you like it and get pleasure from it, who's to say it's a waste of money?

Don't get me wrong I am all for spending a bit more on your cabling. I think the Rocket series is pretty good especially getting it at a discount which isn't hard at all when buying some equipment, I recently received 35% off some and 50% off another, the markup is pretty high on "Accessories" that being said, I think they are made very well and if you're speaker cables are exposed it's an added plus that they look premium. I just don't think there is this huge audible difference after that, certainly not worth thousands of dollars.

I hate to say it, but I hear a difference. The sound is elevated from being flat with the lamp cord to being more 3D with the Audioquest cable. I think your being very unfairly overly critical - but maybe its because you are unaware of the situation.
If you check in my You Tube channel in the playlist for this show you will see there are 26 videos - that means I on my own filmed 26 different systems and rooms across 2 days.
That is a phenomenal amount of work for one man, you would not believe how hard I work at shows and how much kit I carry around to produce video and audio at this quality.
This was filmed last thing on Sunday, when me and the guys from Audioquest had been at it all weekend - don't forget they have to set everything up and pack it all down again.
Just as I was there on the setup day (Friday) working.
This video was not pre arranged or organised in advance it was filmed completely adhoc on the day.
I think given all the factors above the video has come out extremely well from a production quality point of view and Garth has given a passionate and detailed presentation.

I have done a lot of my own testing with cables over the years and recorded the differences easily.
However a point of note a more expensive cable doesnt guarantee a better sound - it should if made correctly expose more of the truth of the system which a "worse" cable is covering up.
So its very important for lots of factors to be nailed down when testing "expensive" cables because they might actually expose a truth that's not what is expected.
However long term will give more from what a better system is able to produce.
That is the whole purpose of this demo - listen to how good this excellent kit can sound.
If I could have used all the recorded song demo, not just a few second clip this would have hugely apparent in this video.

How come with the monster cable they reduce the volume and add just a tid bit more of background noise??? Or does the cable magically filter out the background noise but not filter music content? Since the noise is part of the audio signal are they "smart cables" that know what to filter? They should put a wallet on a scale and measure the weight, that would be more accurate.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem Sounds like someone put a fan in front of the mike when doing the monster cable. Also some people say they can see the volume turned up a tad on the audioquest cables, I can't see that but it sounds like it. That's cheating as a couple of db's can fool you into thinking it sounds "better". Anyway, good cables can't make anything better only bad cables can make things worse. Perfect 100% efficient cables can only give you whats coming from the amp. No cable can somehow "enhance" the signal. Things like RF ( I know I can't hear 95.5 mega hz ), or EMI are all things that are so far below our ability to hear don't do anything. No magic veil that gets lifted etc. Inductance, cap, resistance can have an effect but are so low in a short cable it's debatable and would be user preference anyway. A good piece of #10 zip cord CAN work just as well as a gussied up gold plated cable. Just my 2 cent's from 50+ yrs of electrical and audio exper. The real kicker is the cable with some 72 volt dielectric bias that actually measures worse when connected up. But is promoted with the most unscientific gobaldy goop I've ever heard. Sorry I do believe some cables can have some effect, some, but it's so overblown it gets me going. Get good spkrs and place them well, 90+% of the sound.

It’s addictive to hear the improvements wither lower noise floor, transparency, tonal improvements etc with every cable you introduce. Lately it’s time for speaker cable upgrade - my system has improved to a point where they are chocking it. And I know from personal experience how AQ pss is way better than their psc+ cables, so fire bird is very tempting - using silver where it matters the most. The problem is with speaker cables the cost difference is a lot higher between copper and silver models due to gauge and amount of material they use. Dragon is crazy expensive and out of picture. Maybe try the end A/B demo its easier to hear the differences there - also factor in I had to cut the sound recordings down really short which is a shame because it unbalanced the presentation. I chose the first few seconds of the song as it made the editing a little easier - its not the best section of music to use but I did the best I could.
The initial rumbling is the aircon - we also had lots of ambient noise from other systems being played loud in the adjacent rooms - its a hifi show and that is path of the course

Even through a microphone, RUclips compression, phone DAC and finally my Audioquest Nighthawk headphones, I can hear a clear night and day difference between the Monster cable and the Entry level comet cable. I can't believe people cannot hear it? Granted, my headphones are quite resolving. All you naysayers could be using Apple earpods for all I know.
The difference between the cables can be described as a guitar string being tightened with every upgrade. The Dragon cable was the most taut-sounding, unsurprisingly. The monster cable was simply sloppy in its delivery of transients, which lends to a less exciting, less vibrant and less invigorating experience.

    • @mike_ratman

What I have determined is that the difference - if audible - is greatly affected by the bandwidth of the network connection you have and the fact that RUclips compresses audio - beyond your control - certainly is not helpful.

That looks EXTREMELY BAD for them... In the first demos talking about the higher end cables you can clearly see the volume increased from 70-73. However when doing the A/B comparisons at the end there it doesn't move from 73 throughout all AB's but, it also looks like they took one shot with it at 73 and just overlayed music on the video... Sad.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  3 года назад +4

There is definitely nothing overlaid that wasn't recorded on the day all the same at the same volume. I had to cut the recorded samples down to silly short clips because the RUclips copyright system at the time wouldn't allow that song but I worked hard to shoot and create the video and wanted to publish it. I covered the whole show with video and this presentation besides being about Audioquest they have no say in how the video was put together or published.

The fact of the matter is that a regular good quality speaker cable which costs no more than $30/100ft will transmit an audio signal with no perceivable loss of quality over the distances required in a normal living room. It's certainly possible to manufacture a cable that sounds different, but let's be honest here - that cable is not better from the standpoint of flawlessly reproducing the audio - it distorts the signal. Whether or not that's something you like is a different matter entirely and up to personal preference. I just wish retailers were honest about this, rather than trying to sell customers ridiculously expensive cables which offer no real benefit. These people with their woo woo science claims are giving the whole hifi community a bad reputation.

Thanks for the kind comments, each to their own views of course but the rest seems a little harsh if its aimed at me - I have made countless A/B demo videos for everything I have reviewed and I dont earn a penny from any of them as they all feature copyright music. This video in particular was a real pig to make due to the restriction on the music demo which was a real shame as I put a lot of effort into making it.
For my own reviews I have backed up everything I have ever said with sound demos so you can listen for yourself and make up your own mind - I don't see how that is "pushing" anything its quite the opposite.

If I have a stance its this : how much of the wire from the microphone(s) to the mixing and mastering desk is anywhere near as exotic as the audiophile cables we're told we need to buy. I'm also with the class war aspect of it - those who have the money are free to buy whatever they desire - but the cable industry has accomplished something that's relatively rare outside things like phono stages and cartridges : if you see a cable from Nordost, for example, priced at less than 5K it suddenly seems like a screaming 'bargain' - that's a trick normally reserved for boutique clothing and footwear. Genuinely handmade bespoke tailoring aside (eg Saville Row), its generally accepted that designer goods are massively inflated over the cost of design and construction - is that we really aspire to in the audio universe ?
