Roberta Joan "Joni" Mitchell CC (née Anderson; born November 7, 1943) is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and painter. As one of the most influential singer-songwriters to emerge from the 1960s folk music circuit, Mitchell became known for her personal lyrics and unconventional compositions which grew to incorporate pop and jazz elements. She has received many accolades, including eleven Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Rolling Stone called her "one of the greatest songwriters ever", and AllMusic has stated, "Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century."
Mitchell began singing in small nightclubs in Saskatoon and throughout western Canada, before moving on to the nightclubs of Toronto. She moved to the United States and began touring in 1965. Some of her original songs ("Urge for Going", "Chelsea Morning", "Both Sides, Now", "The Circle Game") were recorded by other folk singers, allowing her to sign with Reprise Records and record her debut album, Song to a Seagull, in 1968. Settling in Southern California, Mitchell helped define an era and a generation with popular songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Woodstock". Her 1971 album Blue is often cited as one of the greatest albums of all time; it was rated the 30th best album ever made in Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", rising to number 3 in the 2020 edition. In 2000, The New York Times chose Blue as one of the 25 albums that represented "turning points and pinnacles in 20th-century popular music". NPR ranked Blue number 1 on a 2017 list of Greatest Albums Made By Women.

Funny you used the word river to describe her music. One of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs is called River. It’s been used in many movies so you will probably recognize it. Cheers

"Help Me" was one of her most successful pop songs. For about 15 years before this she was primarily a solo performer. Her style changed over the years from folk-influenced songs to R & R to jazz. The influence on others has primarily to do with her lyrics, especially of the songs on her 1971 "Blue" album. These lyrics were deeply personal, something of a first for the singer-songwriters of that time, and many writers followed in her footsteps. "Help Me" is more fun and formulaic, popular, but not her best IMHO. I would rank at least a dozen of her songs above this one, including several others on this album. Still, it is much covered. What popular music isn't "of its time?" Not sure why you put so much emphasis on that. On the other hand, stand up any pop song lyrics of the last 20 years against any of hers of 50 years ago and you would see what claim she has to being "timeless." But perhaps you don't care much about lyrics--hard to tell.

Her folk-rock music and voice is similiar with Joan Baez. Jimi Hendrix was a big fan of Mitchell’s music, once writing in his diary that she was a “fantastic girl with heaven words.” I wonder if any of Leonard Cohen's music was about Mitchell and their love affair.

Joni Mitchell is a wonderful songwriter and singer. Fit right in with folk music of the day. I liked “Help Me”, but my all time most beautiful favorite song is “Send in the Clowns”!! Such haunting words and lyrics.

I agree, but that's Stephen Sondheim (as you may know but neglected to say). Judy Collins covered it as well as a couple of Mitchell's early songs.
