    "Somethings lost but somethings gained in living every day".
    Joni is simply amazing! She had an aneurysm in 2015 and had relearned to speak, and sing, and also had some issues with mobility and memory. Yet she made an incredible comeback and earlier this week, she won a Grammy for her 2022 live performance at Newport Folk Festival, which was her first performance after her aneurysm. Go Joni!

    No question...Joni Mitchell is one of the most sophisticated and original songwriters of the 20th century. Her guitar work alone would be enough to place her in the pantheon of amazing artists with whom she competed.

    Poet, Painter, Musical Genius - Joni is a once-in-a-lifetime talent. Isn't it amazing how much music is floating out there in the ether in the upper regions of the air beyond the clouds?

    This version of Both Sides is as retrospective and melancholy as her original version is hopeful and mystical. Joni is a poet and a genius with lyrics.

    Joni is an old soul. She wrote this song at age 23. I never cared for the version she recorded in 1969, because she seemed too young to have experienced so much. But this version...this version wrecks me. By the way, those beautiful paintings that were flashing on the screen during the video were painted by her, too.

    • @Mallykins
      @Mallykins 7 месяцев назад

      I think that it’s important that she did sing it then though, because we can look at the contrast and feel even more moved. I do agree that this is the best version.

    This is amazing and profound songwriting about the universal dialectical mysteries of love and life and how things get in our way. If she only had written this song she'd be remembered as a great songwriter but fortunately she's composed so many more masterpieces. She was only 26 when she released this song. What a talent! You should listen to her earlier version of this song which would be interesting to contrast this later version with the younger singer's approach and interpretation.

    You must listen to this version in conjunction with the original recording; same words, same singer, but it lays a different emphasis on the meaning of the same words -- the original is the hopefulness of the unknown future, the latter looking back at a long life lived. Same words, same song, same singer, a different meaning. Totally amazing artwork.

    Joni is capable of looking at existence with a broad swath of vision. She is an existentialist. Ultimately. She doesn't hold onto value where life is concerned, where how one is meant to live......it's relative and it isn't. She grasps at meaning in the quotidian and she lets it go as the days go by.......she paints it and pokes at it with words and then she let's it go.

    Judy Collins had a massive hit with this song in the early 70s. Her version is amazing the full production of studio musicians expanding the depths of this song. Judy Collins, her version is much faster and up-tempo. I compare what Judy Collins did with this song, and what Karen Carpenter did with the song superstar to be examples when somebody took a song and did something amazing with it.
