Something I don't think I quite stressed enough was just how young the URA members were during this whole sordid affair - both murdering and being murdered by peers around their own age. The URA leaders were comparatively "old"; Nagata Hiroko was 27 - Mori was 28. Comparatively, Toyami Mieko was killed at age 25. Namekata Masatoki and Kojima Kazuko died at 22. The two murdered "defectors" were both 21. So was Ozaki Mitsuo. Younger people were present during the murders - like the teenage brothers of Kato Yoshitaka, who were forced to assist in the beatings which killed him. Nor did I discuss the pregnant woman present or those who brought their babies to the camp... All around, it boggles the mind.
That incident changed URA forever and public perception of them became even more negative and less favorable toward them (even leftist youngsters found it too gruesome). After that incident, their popularity declined.
Wow that got reaaally dark, going from a being a mere youth movement comprised of people with flimsy ideals with angsty teen rage against the police to murderous psychopaths.
Hey everyone, hope you enjoy episode 2, despite the darker themes. I think there's a lot to discuss with the United Red Army and how they could do the things they did to their own members. It's honestly pretty sickening. And sorry for the delay on this one - took a long time to produce! Next episode is already underway, so it'll get out a lot quicker! English subs will be up soon as well.
English subs are up for those who prefer to use them!
I am absolutely loving this series. It's really fascinating!
At least a five part series!? 👀
Fucking bless.
Great stuff as usual UJ! Can't wait for the next part!!!
Thanks for watching! Part 3 will be out soon!
Thank you for the video, good stuff!
Much footage was from Koji Wakamatsu's movie of the incident. Since he was indirectly part of this very event, I am so interested in hearing his words on reckoning with it all.
That's something I'm very interested in as well. Wakamatsu was intrinsically involved in the New Left, the left-associated "pink" film movement, and the JRA in particular. He was even co-director of Shigenobu Fusako's Red Army/PFLP: Declaration of World War. At some point, I'd like to track down more content where he discusses his feelings about this whole thing - and whether or not his film was some sort of penance.
This was so interesting and thorough! Great work!! So glad I'm a member ❤
Thanks! That means a lot to us!
Thank you, Unseen Japan for this amazing and terrifying documentary. I live in Takasaki, Gunma and have been interested in the URA for quite some time.
I’m very interested in exploring some of the numerous camps throughout Gunma.
A Jin-Roh song around 33:00? That was a nice surprise (though admittedly, a little distracting because I know and like it!).
Yep, I felt the themes and era of Jin-Roh matched this series pretty well!
Great video and very underated
I think this incident is why when Japanese drama/mama/animation shows a bunch of people stuck at a remote mountain lodge....
Oh shit....
And if they are snowed in....
Triple Oh Shit....
I can't think of one case that ended well. Sea side lodges always seems to have happy endings...
You are so underrated
First, I think you did a great job!, second, i think this topic is very interesting as i see URA not the typical leftist group, it is not as"progressive" as other leftist groups in the past but it has like a mixture between radical leftist ideas and Japanese traditional culture and conservatism
Communisme with Japanese karakteristik
In short, the "You have no honor!" of the samurai became the "You are a counter-revolutionary!" of the URA.
Can you do video on the red brigades of Italy? Ps love this video
very nice use of the Jin Roh music btw :)
Most peaceful maoists
Is that part of the Jin-Roh soundtrack I hear?
You heard right!
I wonder if the film Kichiku Dai Enkai (banquet of the beast) is atleast inspired by this incident
Just did a quick search in Japanese, and yes, the film was made with the motif of the United Red Army self-destruction in mind. Interesting.
Mob mentality is so crazy to see, yet we all know at one point in our lives took part in
High quality stuff
I guess Mori is the Stalin of the Japanese Communism.
It's kind of crazy how a very large political movement has degenerated into a small, isolated sect that isolated itself in the mountains and, like something out of a Stephen King film, begins to go crazy and kill each other.
Communism in the mountain cabin😢
What happened was inevitable. Communism, like any other collectivist ideology that foregoes individuality and personal responsibility and compassion, eventually ends with the practitioners destroying themselves.
Communism is a broad concept that also includes individualistic groups such as the anarchists. The anarchists disagreed with the Marxists on using the state to collectivize the means of production and remove class disparity. Kotoku Shusui was a prominent anarchist in Japan back in the day and Peter Kropotkin wrote about evolutionary biology and the concept of mutual aid in relation to anarchism.
Unlike capitalism's stellar record.
