      So true. The genuine hot takes are great. Sometimes I feel crim has a take that he doesn't actually believe but says it anyway for content, which I don't like. Richard on the other hand has takes where he actually believes it in his head and makes it so much better.

      But he's 100% wrong about Fountainport over Mirrex. In a control mirror, I'd never want Fountainport. It's too slow. 2 turns to draw a card? Yeah right. I have won soooooooooooooooooooo many control mirrors with mites. Having to hit them with 20 fish is astronomically worse than 10 mites. They can gain life, too. Can't outrun toxic.
      Also: Crim is 100% right that the colored mana Mirrex makes the turn it comes down is super important. Anyone that ignores that clearly hasn't played it much.

      @atk9989 Na, the difference there is that the best counter to Bowmaster is Bowmaster. So you have to play Bowmaster in case someone plays Bowmaster. Lynx will scare off mana greedy decks and thus doesn't need to be played. I think Richards commentary about the thoughtseize was completely fair. People just clowing on him for his hot takes, historically 2 mana discard spells have not been great except in low power standards. I disagree about the counterspell, that seems like a good tempo card where the loss of card advantage isnt such a big deal.

    • @Vael221
      @Vael221 2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah. I could see it being a sideboard card for a midrange mirror where the effect is better and stealing a card is generally going to be more worth it, but you probably just never want to play this into an aggro deck and there isn't really much you actually want to steal from a control deck so it's uses are probably more limited than people are hyping

    • @boombox_up_to_11
      @boombox_up_to_11 2 месяца назад +1

      Castigate was huge in original Ravnica standard. The difference is 2 mana discard versus 2 mana Thoughtseize. The huge drawback of discard spells, drawing them when the opponent is empty-handed is largely shored up by Cruelclaw's Heist. If they have an empty hand the only one the card is dead is if the gift is a land. I also want to mention that his expertise isn't really Standard. So his takes on Standard are often lacking a lot of context*. EDIT: context not content

    Cruelclaw Heist: Discard spell that works on an empty-handed opponent. If they just surveiled to the top 😂
    Sunspine Lynx: Siege Rhino only needed to dome for 3 to be good. 4 drop, less restrictive on colors, and prevent life gain.
    Beza: 4/5 body for 4cmc, life gain vs Aggro, Card draw vs control, ramp vs ramp, and wide vs go wide. This will look okay vs most decks.
    Fountainport: Mirrex mana fixing is huge BUT we might not need mana fixing that much moving forward. Fountainport may have less decks that need it, but I can see it being really impactful in several decks because making bodies and drawing cards will never not be good.

    53:30 Disagree on this being better than Empty for Wish scenarios.
    Empty is a thing you can wish for and then play. It's a storm card. It resolves at the end of your chain and gives you a big board. Sure you get blown out sometimes, but that's the value of the unexpected pivot towards a storm creature avenue.
    Sure the otter has Haste, but you have to play it BEFORE other things. How often are storm decks going to pull of their 3 mana Wish, then a 4 mana Otter, then play 4 more instants & sorceries. Ruby Medallion helps a lot in those circumstances, but I am skeptical.
    Like Empty the Warrens can be a respectable threat if you played 2 other spells before it. Dealing 14-15 damage against a single blocker over several turns which is a lot of pressure in low-storm scenarios (5+4+3+2+1 damage, assuming 1 gob gets blocked each time).
    Stormsplitter feels a lot more of a proactive threat and storm card, rather than an end-combo finish. I think that will limit it a lot. I think the best argument for Stormsplitter is that it'll add more consistent kill pressure potential in Ruby Storm. T2 Medallion, T3 Splitter is a must answer threat, paving the way for Ral and forcing them to keep removal in their deck or die.

  • @jasonkorf7700
    @jasonkorf7700 2 месяца назад +7

    Couple things, first I think Ygra should have been on the list just for the fact that if the combo is Standard playable then the card will be busted and possibly ban worthy. The same goes for Pioneer with Ygra, but there is the fact that it might be a tad too slow. I feel like that card is boom or bust and if it booms it'll be broken.
    Second, as someone who likes Red Aggro strategies is Standard. I do think Sunspine Lynx might be a bit overhyped. While it has a lot of good effects, four mana has been a bit much for Red Aggro decks in both Standard and Pioneer as of late. Especially, since it has no haste or evasion. So while I can still see it as a sideboard card in those decks. I'm a bit skeptical that it's an auto included in the Main board.
    Finally, I do appreciate Richard's skepticism cause I think it does a nice job of balancing the optimism that Crim and Seth have for new cards. Eventhough they may be right. I think it provides a more well rounded discussion about the new cards.

    • @ShiroyWolf
      @ShiroyWolf 2 месяца назад

      Not at any time. "You may cast that card by discarding a card rather than paying its mana cost." With this wording your only opportunity is right there as you are resolving the trigger. If you opt not to you lose the opportunity. Same with Chandra, Torch of Defiance: "+1: Exile the top card of your library. You may cast that card. If you don’t, Chandra, Torch of Defiance deals 2 damage to each opponent." Chandra would run into issues if it did not work that way. You would have to figure out when the 2 damage is dealt if not at the effect's resolution.
      If you can cast (or play) the card at any time other than while resolving the effect if gets specified. See Cruelclaw's Heist: "you may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled" Unstable Amulet: "You may play it until you exile another card with Unstable Amulet." Seek the Beast: "Exile the top two cards of your library. Until your next end step, you may play those cards."

    I think long rivers pull is a tricky card to evaluate. It could be good card for sideboard in many control decks, but I think it will see its best in decks that really exploit its qualities. I can imagine decks with sheoldred having a lot of fun with all these gift a card effects, but the best kind of decks for this card in particular is mono blue tempo where you don't care about the card advantage you are giving to your opponent if it gives you the precies moment to interrupt anything, and that's huge in a format with cavern of souls, since you can be flexible with your main deck, not to mention the fact that in mono blue the UU cost doesn't matter at all. The real question is if there is any strong monoblue tempo deck in standard or at least a dimir deck (with sheoldred and other gift a card effects) that can efficiently use this card.

      I could see it being in blue tempo decks too, like some haughty djinn deck. I don’t think control can run it, decks going the long run can’t afford to 2 for 1 themselves, I think a lot of people are a bit too high on the card but it’s not unplayable.

    The reason thoughtseize is good s because it takes apart the opponents best card and it shows you the opponents gameplan so it allows you to adapt your plays to maximise your deck

    IMO the rare time in 1v1 I would want to gift with cruel claws heist is if I don't have blue and am playing against blue, ripping a counterspell when you normally wouldnt have access to them is huge.

    I'm wondering if Boros Sunspine Lynx could be a modern playable deck? You'd have Ephemerate to flicker the Lynx. Solitude won't gain your opponents life when the Lynx is down. And you have Phlage as another strong threat... I'm not enough of a modern player to know if it could work, but it sounds possible

      it for sure will I think. The gift aspect is better in 4 player formats, in politics it's an upside not a downside usually, and like Crim said even if it's down to 2 players giving a card is still better than losing

    Lunar convocation is probably gonna be cracked in standard because it's a bad greed. The tokens and life loss is cool but the real power is having a life to card converter for the lifegain decks.

    Cruelclaw is another Preacher. Breeches, Jasper Flint, Glissa. Etrata, even. That is, a 3 mana value engine that eats removal they should probably save for your real threat, because if they don't kill it or stonewall it, it is still more than capable of running away with the game by itself.

    Bloomburrow seemed to balance all five colors on all three levels of the game. They all have great one drop beatdown cards. Good mid range game bombs and utility cards. And big finishers. All the tribes are balanced and equally strong with unique keywords to their tribes. Feels like Onslaught back in the day. The only color I think got treated bad was green in the legendary mythic slot. The other four are INSANE cards but the big green, vigilance and reach that reanimates lands is kind of.....meh.

    I worry about this set aging more poorly than other strong sets because of the strong tribal focus. We're probably not going to get many more raccoons or squirrels or frogs or otters this standard cycle. So unless the card is broadly strong i just think they'll get weaker faster as more sets come out.
