Kala Bazar (meaning "black market") essentially dealt with black marketing of movie tickets, which Dev Anand does in the film. The story follows the template of a protagonist who takes the wrong path to make money and then realizes his mistake, for which he has to pay back.
Raghuveer (Dev Anand) is a poor bus conductor who is fired from the job after getting into an argument with a passenger. With an ailing mother (Leela Chitnis) and two younger siblings to take care of, Raghuveer doesn't know how to provide for his family. When he passes by a cinema hall and sees Kalu (Rashid Khan) selling movie tickets, he gets an idea. Seeing that as a good source of quick money, he too decides to black market movie tickets. But for that, he needs capital to start with. So he robs Advocate Desai (Chetan Anand) of Rs 5000 and soon sets his own network of black marketers outside all prominent cinema-halls of Bombay.

पहली बार देव साहब की एक्टिंग इतनी गंभीरता से देखी और फिल्म की कहानी निर्माता निर्देशक लेखक विजय आनंद जी को भी सलाम जी कहानिया आज बन रहीं हैं वो 60 साल पहले ही ऐसी फिल्में बना चुके हैं बेहतरीन फिल्म

देव आनंद सर जी की बहुत ही अच्छी फिल्में है जो चैनलो और यूट्यूब पर दिखाई नहीं जाती है। भारतीय सिनेमा के कोहिनूर थे देव आनंद सर जी। उनकी फिल्मों से भारतीय सिनेमा को बालीवुड नाम मिला था।

I saw Kala Bazar In 1959 at Agra. I like it immensely and thereafter it is my favourite movie. It was splendid in all departments.

@@bossabdul1425 Thank you.Iwas at Agra in 1959 -60 and enjoyed this movie at erstwhile Jeewan theatre, particularly shooting of premier of Mother India and picturization of Khoya khoya Chand, direction of Vijay Anand. I was too young then and forgetfulness is not ruled out .I respect your sensitivity.

Smooth. Very smooth. Like Single Malt. I've heard and loved the songs since 1984, when I was 25 years old. Saw the movie first time today. It is so smooth. Had given up watching pictures altogether, after 1984. Old movies, especially Devanand Navketan pictures, were so meaningful, they still move me to tears. I'll check, most likely the story writer is a Bengali.

A great movie...... , a movie in which great friendships blossom. I am of course talking about the friendship between Waheeda ji and Nanda ji ,which started on the sets of this movie and lasted till Nanda ji passed away in 2014. I doubt if such friendships are possible in today's times ?

Dev Anand was a very underrated actor. He was mostly looked at as a stylish actor but that was in his later movies mostly in the 70s and 80s. During the 60s, 50s and late 40s, he was fantastic as an actor and film maker(director and producer). And his movies usually had a lot of variety, great themes and outstanding music and songs. Rafi Sahib, Talat Mehmood, Hemant Kumar and Kishore Kumar during later years sang some of the best songs for Dev Anand.

Kala PANI is a very sophisticated and intelligent Hindi film made in 1957. They don’t make serious Hind films like this any more - this was one of the last films of the Golden Era1945-1960. It was a remake of a Bengali film which was itself adapted from an A J Cronin novel. Appreciate the diction of the film - even the thugs speak shudh Hindustani. The viewer is accorded due respect.
