My new GSI GXL - Attaching a Fanatec Hub to it

- I treated myself with an awesome custom Gomez Sim Industries (GSI) GXL wheel and would like to share how it looks and how you can attach a Fanatec Podium Hub to it.
(The Podium Hub is needed to make it work on a Fanatec DD wheel)
Check gomezsimindust... if your interested in getting your own GSI wheel or visit his twitch: / gomezracing to watch him build these high quality wheels.

Great video! I imagine this will be helpful to many future GSI owners.
Thanks Luka, I hope it can help others ;) - Btw. looking forward seeing your wheel built.
Finally a good Video showing and explaining this wheel!😍🏆💪🏼
Thanks bud! Looking forward to your 2022 season in real racing and sim racing! 💪👍
Hm, the reason why I have a DD2 is that I have 2 universal hubs. Otherwise I would not by Fanatec again.
I also had the DD2 and changed to VRS. I didn't like how long it takes to replace the QR1 and to be locked into a system.
Great video, thanks for it! It will be very helpful for me in the future. Just a quick question: do you feel like you have enough clearance between the cable connector and the base? No issues when turning the wheel? Thanks!
Thanks a lot. No, actually the original Fanatec hub gives the GSI wheel enough clearance from the wheelbase. No further spacer or hub needed. Have fun with your future GSI wheel… they truly are awesome ;)
Fancy wheel dave👍🏿😊 way to go, looks expensive.. Take care 👍🏿😊
Thanks Josh, only sold one of my kidneys but it was 120% worth it 🤣 Just joking - take care mate
@@McLogo76 funny guy.. I hope u will enjoy ur steering wheel looks like something from F1:)
Great explanation for assembly. What are the . exact screws to mount the podium hub to the back of the wheel?
The are called captive screws. M5 x 13mm long. (Unverlierbare Schrauben in German)
They are available on the gomezsimindustries.com/shop/p/gsi-captive-screws with all details. I thini simraceshop.de should also get them soon.
How stiff are the shifters. How do they compare to the podium hub. I ask as I find the podium hub magnets too strong for me.
I think it depends if you use the smallest carbon paddles on the podium hub or the larger ones. Generally the shifters have got strong magnets and have a very distinctive click. I would say that they are stronger but the actual click feel is also more distinctive... hope you know what I mean ;)
May I ask, how do you select high torque mode when you first turn on your DD? With a Fanatec wheel you have the ‘mode’ button and also some other button combinations that can be used to activate different features? Thanks.
This was before the new Fanatec QR and I think you could just move the wheel (and hold it) at 90° - you would then get a bar that needed to be filled in about 5 seconds on the small DD1 / DD2 display.
Does the cable is selled with the wheel or you need to buy it? What a wheel...
The USB cable comes with the wheel, yes. It really just feels right ;)
could you ideally use this on a CSL Elite wheel base? I've always wanted a wheel like this with a LCD screen but there all made for people with simcube and the over the top rigs so im curious to know if I can do that with my CSL Elite
GSI does recommend to use it on a direct drive base as the wheel is naturally heavier than let's say a McLaren V2 and you might not get that much forcefeed back anymore. So yes, basically it would work and you could use it on a CSL Elite but it might not be the best experience regarding force feedback.
I would recommend to join the GSI twitch stream or discord if you have more questions regardin the GSI FPE (with screen) wheel.
@@McLogo76 Alright thank you I will for sure be doing that when I have more questions!
Looks Fantastic? Could you give your opinion on how well it works with the CSL DD? Also do you continue to control the base with Fanalab?
I did use my GXL on a DD2 so it's not exactly the same. I would definately recommend to use it on a CSL DD with the boost kit as it is heavier than other Fanatec wheels. I did control the base with Fanalab yes, as you cannot change the settings with the GXL wheel. ;)
@@McLogo76 Thanks so much that's what i needed to know. I Do have the Boost kit but really don't run a very heavy wheel to begin with, So It's not Nearly turned up as high as it could I'm just afraid I'll get turned around on the set up. Thanks so much
@@kbsmithgaming9560 ;) Btw. the GSI Discord is a good place to ask people that might run your exact setup about their experience. Take care
How much further back are you sitting since you added the Podium HUB? It looks like an additional 6" which would be a lot in lost FOV. Hope I'm wrong because I have a DD2 and want to try other wheels.
Does every single switch, rotary and button work on 3rd party wheels with the Podium HUB?
Last, I assume we can just use the HUB from the Universal HUB rather than buying a new one. ?
I was hoping other wireless Bluetooth wheels would work with it, like Cube's, but apparently that isn't the case. Any help appreciated!
The distance is was actually similar as with other Fanatec wheels (I had the Porsche Endurace Podium for example) - so no need to sit further back at all. The podium hub is actually only needed for the Fanatec wheelbase so it works / simulates that a wheel is attached. All switches, buttons, rotary etc. work perfectly as they are directly connected via usb.
I don‘t think the universal hub works as it is not recognized as a „wheel“ by the wheelbase.
Bluetooth wheels might work if you can connect them to the pc via dongle or directly. There should be YT videos about such wheels I guess?
@@McLogo76 OK thank you. The Podium HUB looks like the QR I have on my Universal HUBs, that's why I wondered about it.
@@notdreadyet33 The GSI Discord would otherwise be a good spot to ask more about what what works and get feedback from other DD2 users.
@@McLogo76Hi , how to let buttons / shifter work ? should I use some driver or software?
In your opinion, could you also use the advanced paddle module with it as well?
I guess as the APM plugs into the podium hub (usb) and the GSI wheel itself uses another USB directly and you would probably have to drill holes into the aluminium backside of the GSI body to mount them.
The question is: Is your goal to get silent shifters for the wheel? And what system are you using? If it's not fanatec a Evil Racing DGT mit be a better option as the come with PDM. And if you want to mod a wheel that costs that much it would mabye be a better idea to use other known silent shifters that you could connect to the GSI wheel.
The best solution imo would be to get Gomez to make an option with silent shifters 😉
Actually the podium hub isn't really needed here? You would only need the quick release adapter and something cheaper to replace the podium hub and gives more distance bet the wheel and the quick release. Or am I missing something here
You need the podium hub or something that emulates it as the Fanatec wheelbases do not work without a "Fanatec" wheel conected. There are some emulators like for example www.simracingmachines.com/WebShop/wheel-emulators but I found it easier and less of a hassle to just get a podium hub. ;)
@@McLogo76 🤦 I haven't thought about this, damn. Thanks
@@dubtube6691 No issue mate. GSI has got a great discord channel were you can also find the other solutions or get further recommendations.
Hi, could I ask what cable you used please as the podium hub is USB-C?
Not quite sure wich USB Cable you mean. You only need the USB cable that is supplied by GSI from the wheel to your PC. The Podium hub is not connected to the GSI wheel, it's only there so your Fanatec wheelbase detects a compatible Fanatec "device/wheel". Without you cannot turn on the wheel base.
@@McLogo76 Thanks so much for the response it makes sense now. Have a great weekend.
@@Stevieou You're welcome. Thanks and you too have a great weekend ;)
How do you press "ok" when using a non Fantatec wheel as the DD1 is booting up?
You just turn the wheel 90° for about 5 seconds - the DD1/DD2 screen will then have a bar filling up which turns off the low torque mode.
@@McLogo76 Thank you!! I figured this out after I posted. I can't adjust my DD1s ffb (I'm not showing any devices in fanalabs). is that also expected? Thanks so much for your helpful video and replying
@@KramarD Mine did also not show up in Fanalab out of the box. I had to update to the newest Fanalab and update the Firmware of the new Podium hub with the newest drivers from Fanatec. After that it worked.
@@McLogo76 Thanks for the heads up! I'll try that
Hey nice video! Do you know if this setup will work with PS5 console and GT DD Pro? Thanks
Thanks a lot! I'm not quite sure but if other PC Fanatec wheels work on the GT DD Pro, this would also as it's recognized as Fanatec wheel with the Podium hub. But you would need to clarify that.
@@McLogo76 great, thank you!
Is it true that you van ask them to attach a fanatec hub on the wheel?
It is true, not everybody want's to open an expensive wheel - so they offer to do it. Just contact them on the GSI website.
@@McLogo76 aaa ok thx for the fast response man I appreciate it 😁
is it possible to do like this to the sinagic steering wheel?
You can connect any wheel with USB connection like this. But I think the Simagic has got a wireless connection that connects to the simagic wheelbase? Guess that will not work.
@@McLogo76 Thank you!
I wanted to know about it for a long time.
Actually I like the shape of the simagic gt4 wheel . But I’m gonna select this GSL GXL with fanatec rim. Really appreciate!!
@@ko-qu4py You are welcome ;)
It doesn't have USB passthrough. An opportunity wasted.
