As someone who is fascinated by spiders and knows a decent amount about them, seeing this matchup was honestly pretty funny. Sydney funnel web vs a wolf spider is like putting Mike Tyson with boxing gloves dipped in anthrax up against a teen with a knife. No chance.
I was thinkin the same thing, I mean that FW was huge! And the wolf spider didn’t appear to make use of any of its “advanced weaponry”. Literally walked right up, turned sideways, and died lol no contest whatsoever.
Well, the FW was also in much better position, facing it's opponent and protected by its funnel.

@@SlushyyHyuga The way the funnel web spider is set up, speed is of no value because in order to attack it, the wolf still would have needed to get in range of those fangs. She's not going to be able to climb over and behind the funnel web and flank or get on top of her that easily with the lip of the funnel web's burrow in the way. Speed is useful here for escape, not attack. I do agree that this one dun' fucked up, but even if it didn't the funnel web still effectively neutralizes its speed in terms of attacking by positioning itself like that. The wolf can run away, but in a situation where they fight funnel web had home field advantage here.

Well, to be honest, the Funnel Web had a massive advantage here. In was encountered in its own Hideout with only 1 way to attack it. In an open battle the outcome may have been different.
I doubt if a wolf spider would ever attack a fully grown Sydney funnel web spider; for one thing, most predators only take on prey they can easily overpower, except in the most desperate of circumstances. They certainly don’t intentionally engage in death-match type behavior. While it is true that animals may strike at a more powerful animal as a defensive measure, this is pretty much always preceded with a threat display of some sort, like the rattling of a rattlesnake, or rearing up in the case of many spiders. Therefore, in a “face off,” if one of the animals thinks it’s in over its head and adopts a threat display, but the other can comfortably overpower and eat it, then the only chance the less powerful animal has is to run, or better yet avoid the confrontation all together.
In this video, I don’t think the wolf spider was trying to engage the funnel web spider at all, I think it just realized too late that it was being hunted, and couldn’t escape in time.
All this to say that if the two were to meet out in the open, the results would probably be the same, unless the wolf spider managed to escape; however, the likelihood of the two encountering each other in the open would be comparatively lower, since the wolf spider would be more likely to see it and keep its distance. I could see it happening tho if they ran right into each other as one was rounding a blind corner, or over a point of higher elevation, or something like that.
@@kirksealls1912 wolf spider would see the funnel web much easier in the open. It is much more agile and has a strong enough bite to end the situation. Could end the same, could end differently. Fact of the matter still remains that the funnel web was in its ambush location. There would be no "managed to escape" with the wolf spider if that was its intentions. It is much more capable of fleeing as that is how they live their life.

I had a funnel web come into my room late one night while I was sorting stuff and watching a movie, I only noticed it when it emerged from behind the TV as the lights were off, biggest spider I"ve ever seen. I tried to hit it with a shoe and missed, as it dropped down and leaped towards me repeatedly, leaping off the wall off the desk and still leaping on the floor, scared the shit out of me and I just paced backwards with no thought as to what was behind me, never seen such an aggressive spider , within seconds I was falling over backwards into shelves of DVDs, games and and books. So I lost sight of it. I looked for it for hours and was exhausted but didn't want to sleep with it in my room somewhere. I thought about sleeping in the car or getting a motel but it finally appeared and this time I squashed it. Turns out in summer they actively search for mates and become more aggressive. The good news though was I also found out it takes 2 days to die from memory so you'd have time to get to a hospital and receive anti venom.

Sorry PHFATT KCOBRA but unless that wolf spider snuck up behind the funnel web has the goods on this fight. It is like trying to get the light tank from C&C RA1 to beat a mammoth tank while both are at full health. Agility is only good if you can get the first blow on something that is essentially a tank. Even the Western Australian redback spider is no match for a funnel web. Seen it when a truck picked up one of them eastern state hitchhikers at my mate's work years ago at a docking yard.
Funny how they fail to mention just how LETHAL a Sydney Funnel Web Spider's venom can be. It's as venomous as it is aggressive.
Wolf spider although not as venomous it too still has a potential fatal venom with big fangs able to kill a mouse.
Wolf spiders are still evolving iv seen bigger ones as big as tarantulas able to move as fast as a cat
@@FiendishlyDelightedSefto The only way a wolf spider bite would be fatal is if you have an allergic reaction, but that doesn't really count because then a peanut is fatal too. Although it is painful it is nothing compared to a Sydney funnelweb.
It depends on the Victim too. The venom is lethal to it's usual prey and to all primates, (all monkeys, apes and humans). But dogs, cats and probably many other mammals just shake it off and are not injured by the venom.
@@peterschmidt1453 I once saw a case where an infant was bitten by this abominable arachnid. That child needed three doses of the Funnel Web Spider anti-venom before the venom did its job. Spiders THAT venomous don't deserve to live.

@@Kyielith not in the case of jumping spiders. Some genuses of jumpers are also capable of hunting other spiders like 2-3 times larger. If two species from same genus fight, only then 99% of times, larger wins. but if its different genus then it can go to 75% for larger one.

While the Sydney has no room to move, it also means the wolf spider only has one attack angle and that is full frontal and the wolf spider would always lose in that situation

Don’t forget that maybe the Wolf Spider thought it could be a mate, which is why it approached the burrow the way it did. I got these wolf spiders in my Gatehouse at work unfortunately, and they aren’t stupid. I wouldn’t be surprised if they sprayed the funnel web spider with female wolf spider pheromones in order to make this encounter happen. Much easier to have the wolf spider go to the funnel web then the other way around. Spiders like these also usually stay clear of each other, even if their own kind outside of mating time. I just don’t see why it would do something like that. When I catch these spiders sprinting across the floor, trying not to be caught by my eyes, and I catch them, they know it and they freeze. I read the other day that Wolf spiders, when resources are low, they can cannibalize their own type. The males chose to mate with the younger females usually virgin spiders, and the older ones they lure into their funnel and act like they are going to mate with them, then they eat them. Almost seems like that is exactly what happened here, except across spider species.
@@Eastra3 this could be a possibility if it weren’t for the fact that the wolf spider in the video is also a female. Pedipalps aren’t bulbous, let’s are short and strong rather than long and slender like the male’s are. As wolf spiders, they don’t often hide in burrows as they are hunting spiders and only typically burrow for shelter and of course when waiting for a mate. And yes, they are stupid. Wolf spiders are purely instinctual and reactive spiders, they have no capability for learning nor intelligence outside of what they know from the get go.
