For the final episode of Earworm I'm digging into N.E.R.D.'s hit song "Lemon" featuring Rihanna. Its sound is quintessential Pharrell: happy, energetic, and bouncy. The more I listened to it though, the more I realized that its bouncy energy was inspired by a genre of hip-hop that has rarely trickled into the mainstream - New Orleans Bounce.
To learn more about the genre and to get the definitive answer on whether "Lemon" is a bounce song, I spoke with Big Freedia, a Native of New Orleans and an artist widely credited with bringing bounce music to the masses.
Thanks so much for watching Earworm this year!

True, only reason I’m subbed
its
TTRUUUUUU
Too bad that was the final episode
YES!
I can't pinpoint to it but there is something so charming about Big Freedia.
Dat's New Orleans, baby.
It's that Southern Charm
It truly is!
izeofthewrld Big Freedia is real and don't give a damn what you think about her.
i have to say, her gayness surprised me greatly.
Also, I am a little shocked that Vox did not pick up on the fact that most of the songs they mention "T.I, Lil wayne, juvenile's Back that Azz up" was all created by mannie fresh (DJ mannie fresh who they mentioned earlier.)
Agreed. Mannie deserves more credit.
Thats the people who gon shake they ass- Big Freedia, 2018
Can you maybe make a spotify playlist for each video of songs used or recommendations? it'd be really useful! thanks so much for the video
open.spotify.com/user/12150113246/playlist/5aBa4jIvdXZU8GlBFLwOpe I made it, but some of the songs aren't available there.
so I made one here on youtube with all of them ;)

Rafael Takano Dont drop your halo on your way back yo heaven! ❤️
Rafael Takano true hero.
I really love these Earworm vids, Happy New Year Everyone!
thank you!
This song was a banger. Also the album as a whole was great, Kendrick goes in on two songs🔥
Kendrick on kites tho 🔥🔥🔥
Nikhil Bhagat oh for sure man🔥
Anything that Pharrell touches turns to Gold. I'm not surprised. And he's not shy about ackowledging influences.
The little fact that they shut the laptop off before Lil Wayne could say “pwussy” makes me love this channel even more 😭😭😂😂
I agree with the "F David Duke" sentiment.
david duke looks like the devil himself
I don't understand any references and have never heared 99% of the songs and type of music you talk about in this series but its still interesting and I keep coming back.
Keep up the work!
A good way to expand your horizons :)
Word. I mean I’m from the UK so I was chilling watching this vid but certainly wasn’t expecting Derek B to get a mention. He was one of the UK’s first big Hip Hop from so far back that we didn’t even rap with English accents lol, so it’s superb to see older cats like him getting a mention when hardly any of the audience know him. Vox always find a way to sprinkle in all sorts of knowledge from all different styles, eras, regions and sounds of music and that’s respectable af
Same here. I'm more into some acoustic styles from my country (Brazil) so everything here is new to me. Vox did a good job, this video is accessible and interesting even for someone like me. X)
Lemon is such a good song omgggg you know when you hear that “mad ethnic right now”part you better get ready to break it down
Unique Antoinette FR
“To break it down” Amen 😂
Swearrrrr
amen break
You guys should do one on chopped and screwed
or Jersey/Baltimore club music...so effing dope and addictive, two different styles but similar to the energy of Bounce music
True. From DJ Screw to the lean culture side of things all the way to nearly every song having a chopped and screw remix in the internet era is a long and interesting journey. And that’s dope
Chenanigainz Yes. Bmore club!!! And don’t forget Go-Go...you know we do in the DMV.
H-town! 🤟🏻
SOUTH PRK B ITCH
I'm in love with the stylistic choices in this video
Gotta love New Orleans Bounce Music....especially the Old School Bounce!
My Black Is Beautifull too cold to be a hot boy...lol...and im from philly
ltricks...too cold too cold!...lol
rihanna was crazy good in Lemon
Jed Car SO GOOD...I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS HER. Until I was smoking on that level I was like did she say " IT IS RI..." OMG...IT WAS LIKE PLAYING A NEW SONG. OVER AND OVER.
Well now I have several songs stuck in my head
my opinions are facts right! Same here!
Love this. Would've never known about this incredible genre if it wasn't for this. Learning things from Sydney, Australia. Thanks Big Freedia and Vox!
Man, I’m from Memphis but this fascinates me. African American culture is so creative and distinct throughout America. And I wish every aspect of our culture was given the respect it deserves instead of being used and stomped on like a commodity.
People aren’t above rap culture because it’s not just the music that goes into it
Yes Big Freedia
Natalia Sikora hey! You married to the dude who play Tommy? 😁 I ❤ Big Freedia too! She don't care and I love it all! So sad to hear Starz being dropped from optimum too btw. Give Tommy my condolences 😉
I loved her on Elliphant's "Club Now Skunk". I'm gonna listen that song now!
YASSSSSSSS thee qween of bounce herself!!!
Natalia Sikora ew
iirc didnt Freedia have a short run show too right about bounce...
Just throwing this out there for the people that make these videos, but as a huge lover of music, these are some of my favorite RUclips videos. I love how in depth you guys go. I have really re-thought certain styles and artists with these videos simply because you make me look at them in a different way. Please keep doing what you're doing.
Also, the new NERD album is awesome.
Huh, I'm from New Orleans and I'm pleasantly surprised by this video! I also noticed this with Lemon and I'm glad Vox brought attention to it!
resinie i lovejhope
Pornesian Parrapio Me too! I love him so much!
I fell in love with bounce music when I first heard it (via Messy Mya, rest in peace) and I was so obsessed with it that when I was driving to Texas and had to go through New Orleans, I was sooooooo hoping to hear it on the radio as I drove through and tuned into you alls stations, but I was sadly disappointed, it was just the regular ole mainstream hits, I coulda sworn they played it on the radio down there and I came fully prepared to get my bounce on lol
Chenanigans They play it on Friday and Saturday nights. It's called Social Shakedown. Stations like Q93.3
resinie ohh, okay, I was driving thru on a Monday night, so maybe that's why lol
"In New Orleans, we take _any_ song. It can be from a Beyonce song to a Rihanna song to a Drake song-"
-to a _Beethoven_ song? 🤔
I highly wouldn't doubt it. I've seen the genre take a boring Adele ballad and bouncify it, lol, went from a yawn inducing song to a ass shaking inducing song XD
maybe they might take from Swans song, who knows?
Yes, hard to believe because Beethoven was not very influential.
TheZooropaBaby go back to fantano, nerd. :P
TheZooropaBaby actually, the intro guitar in screen shot is prime sampling material.
You best not get Pharrell sued again
neptunes been inspired by bounce since the beginning. busta made his money off their beats in the 90s.
It’s those hi hats and the snare patterns. They make anyone go crazy
BIG FREEDA BETTER KNOWN AS QUEEN DIVA
it's been seven months since this and i just want to point out how ahead of the curve this video was. Ever since LEMON, songs inspired by New Orleans bounce have been destroying the charts, and Big Freeda herself has been featured (uncredited) on the biggest hit of the summer.
Could you do a video on the China's surveillance system which is called Skynet. Seriously that's what it is called, I'm not making that up.
Matt Kid yea this would be amazing
This is a series about music
This is the Earworm series. It is about music. How on earth would it be suitable to do an episode on Skynet?
Canyentay I know that this has nothing to do with this series. But it needs to be covered, China has become one of the biggest surveillance states on the planet. And Vox is great at covering human rights abuses.
The CCP has 170 million cameras posted around China.
“Two Heavens” by Death Grips also samples the triggerman beat. Such a talented group.
Rphex :)
People in NOLA are definitely unique! They have their own flavor in everything!
This girl is for the culture.
No dissing Nardwar! His interviews are legendary!!!
well in my opinion i saw it as a homage. like, his interviews are so hipnotic and fun to watch that even the Vox Team got lost a little.
New Orleans in this bih!!!!!!!!
hey Vox! I really enjoy this series - especially looking deeper into pop music as a classically-trained musician. I was wondering if you could investigate the origin and popularity of the "3-3-2" rhythm in pop (as in, 2 dotted quarter notes followed by a quarter note) as it comes up so often in tracks now and I'm curious to where it comes from. thanks!
Look up tresillo rhythm on Wikipedia.
It's all over afro-cuban music, which of course came from African beats. That would be my answer
I've heard that the "dunn-dunn-dah" that is featured on so many modern pop tracks is called a "Dembow" beat after a similarly named dancehall track. This would not be an unsurprising origin, considering the huge influence of Major Lazer's work and Diplo's production career in general.
in a nutshell it's from afro-caribbean dance music, where it came from afro-caribbean folk music, where it in turn came from central & west african rhythms. i'd love to see a vox video on this too tho
In Brazil we use this pattern (3-3-2) in a music style called baião, but it's not electronic music. X)
The African influence again. =)
nardwuar!
Rauwdran?
Lol
Nardwuar is a reporting legend and has been interviewing musicians since the 80's ruclips.net/user/NardwuarServiette
Doot Doola Doot Doot!

GeorgetheGreat Her first 2 albums are great mixtapes
Jordan Williams lmao yess 😂😂😂 such an intern joke 😂😂
7:24 I was waiting for that beat 🎶 Cash Money taking over for the 99 and 2000 💃
I remember when that song was new! Played at nightclubs, everyone gettin silly. I’m 45 now. No clubs no drinking.
This series is fracking amazing! Awesome production!
Lemon has been my alarm and it unfailingly wakes me up with its incredible energy. Seeing one of my favorite Vox series analyze the track is a wonderful gift on top of it.
No one ever really dies
except they kinda do , if they live in Seattle
Aww, was that the last episode of Earworm? I'm going to miss it so much. :(
Hjälte Björkdahl why the last one?
nina mathies read the description
I think it's just the last one of season 1
I don't want to wait - I could watch a new one oft these
ever single day
Araceli Gomez Gomez let's hope :-):-):-):-):-)
The word twerk or twerking originated in New Orleans while the time bounce music formed
I live in Louisiana so this was kinda brilliant to think about, Ive always loved the song.
"what type of food you eat"
"p*$@#"
Grew up listening to New Orleans bounce & Baton Rouge jig.... Mississippi thanks you 🙌🏾❤️
New Orleans love to inspire others
We do! ♡♡♡♡♡ All love no hate...
Wow. I hope you are getting compensated well because this is just pure joy. Love the series, feel like I learn and geek out with your insights with every new entry.
Great job as always. 🙌🏻
Can y'all make a video about Kendrick Lamar??? He's such a talented artist with incredible range, you guys could make an awesome video
Gotta sout out nardwar come onnnn
I'm obsessed with Trombone Shorty from New Orleans. The first song I ever fell in love with from him is called "Buck Jump". I never knew the title was probably a nod to "Buck Jump Time". If you did a video about him and that classic New Orleans horn sound I would probably die of excitement. lol
On another note, I saw Big Freida at Best Friends Day in Richmond, VA years ago, and had so much fun!!
I always loved New Orleans bounce.
Vox brought me here
Notif squaaadd
Where? On the Vox channel? :))
YepIts
...to the youtube vox channel? Can't tell if I'm being wooshed.
Anybody know the music instrumental that starts around 0:18?
Vox Hip Hop or Vox music in general is the dopest thing to come out of dope.
Abid M what does it have to do with DOPE?
Also, in N.E.R.D.'s song "Don't Don't Do It!", he calls out the name of multiple places in the U.S. (Phoenix Arizona, South Carolina, etc.), similar to how Greg D and Mannie Fresh call out the different housing projects in New Orleans.
EXCELLENT!!! Being and native and resident of New Orleans and being a part of bounce culture from day one, this was perfectly done.
Big Freeida looks like a Jordan Peele character.
Hans Enriquez she looks like Tracy Morgan
Mixed with Tyler, the Creator
Big freeida sounds like tyler the creator
She*. Which is weird cos she says she isn't transgender, but whatever makes her happy I guess.
HAHAHAHAHA "Meegan!!!!"
Now I really want to go to New Orleans! Never been to the other side of the Atlantic but this just warms my heart
Will I just learn something new about Mannie Fresh.
To me Big Freedia was all of bounce I learned alot from your video thank you!
I love how this is animated and shot
I can't believe this is the end of season 1! I just need you guys to post whatever and whenever you feel ! I've learned so much and even went back to listen to previous era's because of these videos! Come back !!
Ps: the whole NERD album is amazing !
4:27 “I like cheesecake” 😂😂😂
These earworm videos are really good for my old skool playlist.
Drake - Nice for what
Drake - In my feelings
That's why he wasn't the greatest... Even though sold more copys and become popular then Kendrick or Kanye
Damn, I love Back That Azz Up and I was totally unaware of the New Orleans Bounce sub-genre!
Itzzwan... Lil Wayne "Bring It Back" is Bounce Music Inspired; featuring Mannie Fresh...GO DJ Datz Wayne's DJ!
Give Pharrell a break. He only had the 'Blurred Lines' lawsuit.
Amar Sanghera lol he didn't learn 😂
Amar Sanghera He lost because juries are not people who should decide cases in music. Read what musicians have to say.
Bounce Music is a style. This is just the Neptunes take on Bounce music. If you grew up listening to Bounce Music you recognized it. He didn't hide or disguise it. He said bounce for a reason.
Eddie Brock Ageed. The music video was even set in New Orleans 💁🏾 Bouncing around Bouncing around Bouncing
morpheos111 stfu, they stole. Period. Ask a has been you're saying?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make another season of this series!! I have thoroughly enjoyed it!! 💗🎧
Back that azz up the best bounce track ever
It should also be noted that the triggaman beat is very influential to Memphis rap as well, mainly thanks to DJ Spanish Fly’s versions of it that blew up in Memphis clubs back in the day
make one about chicago juke and footwork!
I'm sure every region has a style of music that is sacred. They should make a national tour series. Shout out to DJ Chip! Chi-Town stand up!
Dr0mp you seen Tim and Barry's stuff? Decent
I loooove how earworm talks about all music equally, all the science in rap music and classics talked equally!
Anyone else hear the Death Grips sample at 2:44?
Two heavens right?
Indeed
WE GOTTA BRING EARWORM BACK
It's Tuesday! Where is my Vox's border series?
it ended
Ended WEEKS ago lol
This is the worst year ever!
why did it end???
They only made so many of them. They looked very expensive and time-consuming to make.
Though Bounce is still life here in the 90s, despite crime (we know it was bad), I had such a joyous upbringing and Bounce was the soundtrack to it. The city was full of life! I’ll hear certain songs that bring me back to a DJ, parade, Carnival season, etc. ☺️
Commenting live from New Orleans. Thank you Vox for recognizing
I love how well edited this vid is. Thanks for putting in the time!
Got to say I didn't think that's why it was called drag rap
lel, I thought the exact same thing
Love to NOLA!
Long time listener, first time caller. This series has been amazing. Plz continue! 10/10. Would learn again
Beat is catchy asf and *Rihanna* killed this track🔥🔥
I love this series with all my heart! It's gotten me to check out some rap songs---not usually my style, but being able to appreciate the work, creativity, and analytical production that went into them goes a long way.
That's just like Beyonce's formation. That's bounce music inspired.
I love all of Vox's content but this is by far my favorite show. Keep up the good work!!!
Could you do a video on Newark’s Jersey Club culture which has become pretty mainstream lately? Sliink for example
I love the Earworm series! It teached me so much about music with just a few short vids! I can't wait for new episodes!
✋I am from new Orleans
Omfg I love Big freida. I remember the FUSE show a few years back. Rest In Peace big mama
I love lemons
Earworms are the BEST! I learn so much from them. Please more Earworms for 2018
YOU CAN CATCH ME
Daggo Abouna RI
Ana Maria Žaja IN THE NEW LA FERRAR
Yes, Lemon is most definitely not bounce. Bounce inspired it. I’m glad someone recognized that. Bounce music is so unique and so different. That’s one of many reasons I appreciate that my family line just so happen to land and stay in New Orleans. I may live elsewhere now but New Orleans will always be home.
I love your earworm series - it's one of my favorite Vox series - keep it up!
OMFG I knew Big Freedia would be in this and I am living for it
yess all on Q-93 boyyy
I love these videos that analyzes music :)
I'm from New Orleans and tbh I thought everybody listened to bounce lol
BIG FREEDIA!!!!!!! she's amazing oh my god
New Orleans beat, New Jersey beat there's a lot of good stuff around there
Ooohhh man that triggerman beat is embedded in our dna here in New Orleans I immediately get chills, no other city like it! ❤️ u did a great job on this video!
first thing I thought soon as I heard Lemon! Pharrell definitely used New Orleans bounce as inspiration. Louisiana natives (including myself) recognize bounce as soon as we hear it, ya heard meh! Lol!
Earworm is what brought me to Vox and it’s what keeps me subscribed.
