Lyrics
So I wait my turn, I'm a modern man
And the people behind me, they can't understand
Makes me feel like
Makes me feel like
So I wait in line, I'm a modern man
And the people behind me, they can't understand
Makes me feel like
Something don't feel right
Like a record that's skipping
I'm a modern man
And the clock keeps ticking
I'm a modern man
Makes me feel like
Makes me feel like
In my dream I was almost there
And you pulled me aside and said you're going nowhere
They say we are the chosen few
But we're wasted
And that's why we're still waiting
On a number from the modern man
Maybe when you're older you will understand
Why you don't feel right
Why you can't sleep at night now
In line for a number but you don't understand
Like a modern man
In line for a number but you don't understand
Like a modern man
Oh I had a dream, I was dreaming
And I feel I'm losing the feeling
Makes me feel like
Like something don't feel right
I erase the number of the modern man
Want to break the mirror of the modern man

My favorite arcade fire song. I used to play it on my way back home after spending a long night studying at the library and feeling depressed as hell. I have graduated already and I am a doctor now. Thanks Arcade Fire for making such a good music that someone like me who lives on the other side of the world could relate to and enjoy.
I can relate to this so much, now it's my turn for learning to be a doctor on the other side of the world and be depressed, hope it gets better when I graduate
@@Martinator897 Do your best it's worth in the end trust me. Good luck and I wish you a happy life my friend.
@@plastictree5783 Thank you for your words, it poured hope in my heart. I wish you exactly the same my friend
How's life as a modern man?
ruclips.net/video/cB_daVBH_Is/видео.html
this songs hits the spot, you really don't know the role of being a man when you're young, and you have to kind of figure it out on your own. The role of the modern man is not knowing where you're going or what to do. Like the songs says, “If it's so right, how come you can't sleep at night”, it's the uncertainty of being young and anxious to get to something better right away.
welp i guess im a modern man even though im still a kid
Spot on
I'm a modern man even though I'm a woman. It's being human. It's the anxiety of modern life. I absolutely adored this song when it came out and would listen on repeat. It encapsulated everything I felt at the time.
So is some Suburbs 10th anniversary thing happening or something? Lots of Suburbs era (the best AF era imo) posts here and on Twitter.
Yes, it's happening
I had to do it sorry
I guess that too
Agreed, I mean the last two albums were good too (and huge commercially successful) but I miss this dreamy, slights depressed, and yet okayish atmosphere "The suburbs" had.
Zoomer cycle of adoption.
this album was a life changer for me.. so so good. Coming back to it these years later, hits different.
Right The Suburbs for me is a spectacular experience, very emotional like melancholy
When I first heard this song 10 years ago in university, I was too young and naive to understand what was being foretold. Many years later adulting I am now know familiar with that feeling, something is not right. I hope that wherever you are reading this, you gain the strength to confront it.
Art. You can't grow without it. You can't be humble without it.
24. Dallas. Working a shitty first job post-college. Having bigger dreams. Aunts and uncles are dying. Quarter-life crisis setting in. "Something don't feel right."
10 years later. Travelled the world. Reconciled with people. Writing books. Making the best of life.
Hell yeah dude
Life sure is a funny thing
@@MillennialMedia247 it's so weird. This song captures some of that oddness and the uncertainty of maybe there's something better if you lean into the discomfort of leaving what you know. When I listen to it now, I'm transported back to being 24 and feeling like I'm living the wrong life. Hard lessons were learned but man, so many amazing adventures by trusting my gut.
@@TreavorUnion Your comment will stick with me sir. I'm 24, and in that exact scenario your first comment mentioned, just gotta keep pushing through
@@MillennialMedia247 Trust your gut and follow your heart, young one.
One of my favorites!!
I've loved this song for so many years. I think it's ultimately a tragedy. The end is grim acceptance. He tried to rebel against the modern man, tried to erase his number, break his mirror; but instead, he just became the modern man.
So subtle, so evocative.
Best band this side of the 20th century.
They came in 21st dude
I luv this song too much. The suburbs is a masterpiece.
I see Arcade Fire, I click
This album, this song, feel so... now. Now.
This song is about being enlightened and you realize it, but you are frustrated because circumstance is holding you back from doing anything about it. Couldn’t be more true in the age we are all living today.
Banda espetacular. Amazing
I saw them play in Portland! Go see this band live! In my top 3
One of my favorite Arcade Fire songs :)

summer of 20 11 come back to me
A modern classic
Thanks for reminding me to listen to this gem in what is certainly the worst year ever.
Super
I can't stop making the love to the "play" Buttom
Wow I am crazy early, keep up the bops bois 😊
Love this song, pretty much perfect and one of their most underrated. It continues a common theme from The Suburbs, of the corrosive impact of technology. "In line for a number but you don't understand... if it feels so right, how come you can't sleep at night". I picture the crowds on line waiting for the newest iphone, thinking it will make them happy.
What a classic
I’m mad we probably missed some full play through of this in Montreal or toronto. Sigh
I had a dream last night that I saw them in a show for just me and my mom, somewhere weird, we were standing on large pieces of cloth. And Arcade Fire played this song down below. It was funny to think of 7+ people making a show for me and my mom only.
😍😍😍👌
ME DAN VIDA ♡
Probably my favorite AF song, although Neighborhoods #2 and wake up come pretty close
💖💖💖💖💖
I take a more literal interpretation.
"Dream" being either waking or not, but if "you can't sleep"...that aligns with my experience & how I feel this. I WAS "almost there" and was sabotaged quite on purpose from more than 1 angle, as was my partner, as so many have been now, a few years later. We've been aware our undoing has been mounted again and again but couldn't see just how dire would the situation overall be 'allowed to go'.
Unspeakable.
It's not stopping.
I'm 50 & can see back to the 70's enough to have an idea...and always also sense what's gone wrong/going wrong ahead, at the same time quite possibly very unnecessary - as there def have been ways to stop participating/pave way/make outcomes more to our own design.
The blurry line of those unrealized potentials cannot now be known
& holy sh*t is it too late for so many ppl so many things.
Looking back,
If I could have just known 1 thing, in my youth (9 yo - teen)
the truth that I actually had it right, had the correct pov/assessment
what may I have done instead!??!
But I had kids so had to (sortof) wait for them to grow up...yet that could only work to a point. I still had to make choices no one would sign up for.
The Purpose of a System IS What It Does.
The brilliance of Arcade Fire includes songs like this that capture the essential AND most salient aspects of what our collective human condition is like, our suffering manufactured to feed those who benefit most from it, as we somehow also refuse to grasp the whole operation.
The music crafts an expression of the emotional levels - that I'm afraid of, while precisely naming the intellectual sides I prefer to retreat into and reside in, as if to postpone the truth of feeling and experiencing all together, in the moment, of each moment.
I learn that lesson every time I listen to their music.
More than that+song+youtube
Comentario Mexa ✋ me encanta esta banda forever 🔥🥺
Mexicano aquí !
Andale carnales
I'm curious to know what the lyrics mean to them
What does it mean to you? That's more important

I love you. Keep going. Je vous aime.
kinda sad I found this song so late! Released in 2010, when I listen to it it feels like I listened to it 10 years ago.

Slowed this one down to perfection on my channel to enjoy for even longer
Who thinks Arcade Fire should do a special tour when they would play The Suburbs entirely?
2 years later, I still do!

Best part of the song tbh
older, still don't understand
Funny story, Jamie Dornan kinda introduced me to this awesome song.
Yes! Introfuced me too. Thank you jamie!
Love the song!
If you like this song, which I love, try A Well Resected Man and Celluloid Heroes by the great band of the ‘60s and ‘70s, the Kinks. Lots of great reflective songs. Lola…….
