Nice vid. It’s the perfect car. Have had my 2001 for 10 years; 99,850 miles on it now. Lucked out, got it at CarMax at 36,000 miles. Was my dream car in high school. Best purchase I’ve ever made. Timeless design.
Just incase you didn’t know or for anyone for that matter... The sunroof goes back even more. The first click is like a comfort setting. It won’t let too much air in. If you press it again, it goes back another inch maybe inch an half. I personally love cars that have sunroofs. I always drive with it open all the way to get as much air in as possible. The roof spoiler isn’t factory. If you decide to buy an automatic, try to find one with a LSD. Yes, some automatics came with a LSD. Chassis code on the drivers door jam B02B or C means LSD, B02A means no LSD. The LSD makes the car handle better and you can do real burnouts and rolling burnouts and if your skilled enough, pretty good drifts. Lots of aftermarket stuff available to modify and change things. The throttle is actually a hybrid drive by wire. The car controls most of the throttle and gives you about 35% control stock. If you do the maintenance, these cars easily can go until 300,000 miles on the original engine. Headers and full exhaust bump up the horsepower by about 20. A little more pep in the mid range power band. Then valve cover gaskets will eventually start leaking. Power steering reservoir will also start leaking. The top of the radiator usually starts cracking and will either leak and/or explode. Cam seals start leaking after 200,000 miles give or take. If you need to change the water pump due leaks, this is a good time to do the timing belt, thermostat, alternator, both tension pulleys, and crank seal as they’re all in each others way. When changing the valve cover gaskets, that’s a good time to do the plug seals, cam seals and rebuild your VVTI gear. Stick with Denso spark plugs, they work the best and last really long. When buying one, watch out for door lock actuators not working and the temperature control and mode selectors not working. Those are the most common problem on these cars. Factory system is decent, the speakers last a long time before sun rot or deterioration occurs. Some came with a factory subwoofer but are pretty rare. If you want to change speakers, you need to bypass the factory amplifier under the glove box in order for your aftermarket speakers to work properly. If you want to change just the head unit to aftermarket, you will need the proper harness to get the factory amplifier to work with it. The paint will start bubbling and rusting on the side skirt areas, haven’t noticed any other places having that issue. Now go buy one!
@@willesco5211 It’s a great car but it’s very old and so it will need a lot TLC no matter the condition. This is a Japanese car trying really, really hard to be German. With that comes expensive parts, over engineering, and a constant need of maintenance.
if you're going to buy an is300 buy a 2001 if possible, the 2001 does not have the sticky dash problem which is a pretty big headache for new IS300 owners. I own a 2001 solar yellow is300 that is garaged kept, regular maintenance, etc. The car is amazing, very fun to drive, it will spin tires with ease, and it turns a lot of heads. The is300 is my favorite car ive owned. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. One headache i did come across that seems to be a common problem is i had very bad cylinder misfires. Im generally pretty handy on anything that goes wrong, ill fix it. The misfires took a little bit of time to figure out. The way i fixed it was, cleaned out MAF sensor, new spark plugs and performance coilpacks. Bam, no more error codes, no more check engine light, etc. All in all, if you are thinking about buying one, do it. There will be no regrets, this is one hell of a car.
Bathroom Soap I know this was posted a long time ago...but I have to post one bad thing about '01 IS300's now that I have had several. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT lose your master key if you have an '01. The ECU is not electronically reprogrammable for a new key to be able to deactivate the cars immobilizer, and if you lose it you need to buy a whole new ECU which will then need a key cut and programmed to it. (Yes you can purchase a new ECU/key set on eBay for '01's, but if you go this route the new key will not match your ignition tumbler, door locks, or trunk lock.) The '02-'05's are electronically erasable and reprogrammable so if you are unfortunate enough to have lost your only master key you will have to have the car towed to a Lexus dealer, and a new key can be made and programmed based on your VIN number and ECU at a cost of about ~$650 not counting the tow...but this sure beats the easily $1,000-2,000 it will cost to do all involved in replacing the key in a 2001. Ask me how I know...sigh...
its drive by wire at the throttle body. The cable doesn't move the throttle blade it only moves a sensor that tells the ecu what you want, then the ecu moves the blade electronically,,
I just bought my second 01 is300 and I love it. Of course my first had the built-in nav but I'm just happy to have found this with low mileage and maintained. Plus I fit comfortably in it @ 6'3 270lbs. Great video and very informative
Flinstone01 hey man I’m 19 and just bought and is300 and I love the car, one of my favorite things about it is the handling of the car it’s tight and responsive aswell as super smooth, the throttle response is instant and hits hard but cuts like butter

guys this car is amazing I own this car for 8 months and not a single problem mine is an 04 is300 and Dam it drives and handles really well not to mention the the nice pearl white color with the tan interior... today is about to hit 142000 miles like I said no problems at all... plus i live in El Paso Tx. and u don't see many of these and it really gets people's attention... plus not to mention plenty of room for mods if wished to be modded... mmmmmmm oh the sound system in this car is really good I've gotten compliments just by that... guys test drive u won't be disappointed 😉

You had some good notes about the is300. Just a suggestion if you do plan on making another is300 video: dont worry about the little bits of visuals on the car. focus on the times that made you feel unsure about the car. for example, if the seats start tearing after however many miles of usage. look for the mechanical aspects of the car. There's this RUclipsr called Savagegeese that did an excellent video on a buyers guide for a honda s2000. All-in-all, please do your research and only focus on the mechanical side of the car, cuz everyone will change the look of their IS300 to how they want to.
First off i just want to say i really liked what you did to your is300 and i especially like your rear aftermarket bumper and was wondering where'd you get it from and maybe if you can send me the link to where i can get it? I have a is300 as well and i really want that rear bumper you had.
Nashane Kelly dan honestly looking back all these years I can happily say there are soooo many better cars out there for the price. I can give you an extensive list if you'd like. Message me on Snapchat @soasin. I'll also explain to u what I didn't really like about the IS despite how amazing it was
nice vid man. glad someone posted a video of this car. I'm considering buying one myself. i saw a couple on cars.com for a pretty decent price considering the year and milage. only questions i have is how good is the MPG and how does the car run in snowy weather? i live in DC and we can get some bad snowy weather here. doesn't happen every year but when it does it takes a tole on the community. lol these people don't know how to drive which makes it worse for us good drivers.
Your Center Console is different that mine. Where your traction control is is where u turn on the heated seats. It's a GREAT Car. P.s STOCK is the way 2 ride!.
Michael Mitchell @joltran how can i contact u? i want help with getting an is300 , i am living in california bay area. love the is3oo, help help help please
I just bought a 02 is300 for 4000. It was repainted purple over the silver. Kinda chipping in some spots, not too horrible. The sunroof switches keep tripping me out cause it won't close right unless I time it perfectly. It's got 127K on the motor. Came with a "cold air intake" right above the header. Other than that it's bone stock. Really enjoying it. Don't really have plans to hoon it or make it a race car. I was kinda surprised it wasn't too fast off the line. But on the highway it mobs. I really like how tight the steering is and how good the breaks work. Would you say I got a good deal?
I love how you said it's good yada yada yada but if you put a straight pipe the neighbours are gonna complain haha that sounded so funny idk why! xD Btw this is my dream first car which explains why I clicked on this video:)
Yea broo it's a a amazing car! Affordable so much fun to work with and so many possibilities! And he's the neighbors hate it! But if you have any questions or anything let me know I'll post it or do a video. Great first car tho!
The straight pipe was a generic one. You can most likely get one online. But the majority of the exhaust including everything except The straight pipe was HKS. But just google is309 straight pipe. I'm sure you'll find one :)
If future buyers do intend to buy this car and if you guys want to change your own oil I suggest buying a oil filter wrench, because for some reason the oil filter on the IS is in a really tricky spot unless you have small hands.
I wanted to buy one of these but i didn't want to make the switch from going manual to auto so i went with a 6-Speed Jetta GLI VR6, still a nice car i would buy maybe later on really like the design and engine it has, ive seen a couple of nicely done modified ones in my area.
Hows insurance on this thing? How much money have you had to spend while you owned it? Should this be my 2nd car if i only have $6000? I'm also considering the Acura rsx.
+Abe Faiz I'm not trying to argue and you are may be right I don't own one. It just appeared to have some slack. There are two nuts where the rubber part starts if you adjust those you'll get a better response from your throttle. It'll be more sensitive.
+nate s No I understand where you're coming from I wasn't trying to be an ass. I own a 2001 is and I've seen a bunch of other ones too and they're all like that, I'd adjust mine but I'm too lazy lmao.
+Abe Faiz ok. You know how it is on here people get but hurt all the time gotta walk around on egg shells. I love tuning cars. Chevy did the same thing with there 03 Silverado I had to adjust the cable then pull the extra slack out at the pedal by shortening the cable then cut off the diffuser they put on the throttle body plate that restricted air. It killed my mpg but it woke that v6 up.
Great video !!! Thanks for the tips on the is300 because I was thinking what my 1st car could be and your video hit the spot !!! Also are those guys with the rc cars still run there on Sundays ???
Yeah same to me. Im 18 so im live in germany and i on the way to my driver licens and i like jdm cars! My dream car is an 2012 to 2014 subaru wrx/sti hatch with coilovers and 45mm spacers with 18×9.5 rota grids plus invidia n1 street with catless dp;) but the point is i love japanes car and i want a car that can drift but i dont want a bmw! And so in germany we have the is200 its the same car but it havs a 2.0 liter v6.
Yea bro is300 are great drift cars! They are easy to build and they're really light. Plus they have a long wheelbase and short length so they fly around the track.
Depends what you're looking for in a car. They're essentially the same car accept the is is available in manual and the gs is longer. It's ultimately up to you tho. I reccomend the is. A little more nimble
Doesn't this use premium gas? That's probably going to be a game changer for me, honestly. It's a very cool car but I'm a pretty big guy just coming off the '99 Dodge Intrepid, which is a pretty damn big car.
I wish I had your center console. Mine is the same design with the cup holders and all but in the back 2001 doesn't have any elevation like yours its just a low compartment.
thanks for uploading these video man really helps I got a quick question... I have a Lexus IS 300 been having problems with the fans it over heats on me if I'm parked for a while did your IS do that??... my fans don't turn on automatic only if I turn in my AC then they turn on
My 1st car was a silver one, with black suede/leather interior... Loved those seats more than anything... As a matter of fact why I bought my A5 recently is because it had the same interior as my old is and even smelled similar.. I like the car, wouldn't have fucked w the bumper tho
thanks dude in 15 1/2 and lookin to get my permit and gonna get a 03 lexus is300 by the end of February😊 ima pick it up for $4000 its descent miles and clean body is it a good price?
+illest_evr THE GTE HAS STRONGER PISTONS AND RODS PLUS AN OIL SYSTEM THAT COATS EACH CYLINDER AND THE INTAKE MANIFOLD IS ON THE SIDE RATHER THEN OVER THE TOP BUT realistically the gte is 10x better. but the ge isnt bad obviously being the younger bro. with upgraded pistons and rods youll have a makeshift gte
Couple things, I bought one at ~80k and a few things I wish I knew before and other observations.(US models)
- The 02 sensors will go/ start to go around 80k-100k, which is a pretty easy fix if you're kind of handy, ive replaced 3 of the four so far and im at 101k.
- The vvti pulley will leak oil. This is expensive ($800+) to fix IF you're not handy, and the part itself is expensive from the factory (around $200 I believe)
- The paint on the dash board will melt and be sticky to the touch, especially if its been in warmer areas (ie: the south) and dust gets stuck to the sticky paint. You'll have to deal with it or remove it/get it removed and painted.
- 5 speed manual transmissions are quirky, if you go that route.
-100k+ mile vehicles make sure the timing belt/water pump/ cam seals have been changed or you're going to have a bad day.
-The vehicle's stock tire size (except sport design) is 215/45 17... which you will learn is a bit of an oddball of a size.
- 2002 - 05 years, when you get a check engine light (as you can see in the video) your traction control turns off, keep this in mind because it IS rear wheel drive and it WILL spin on you if you're not careful.
- it requires premium fuel and its meh to horrible on gas mileage.
But all in all I like it.
this is the information to know
awww bro thanks i was wondering why my 04 lexus keept saying traction control off and the check engine light was on... any way to fix it?
+Eduardo Castillo you have to fix whatever is causing the check engine light, when you clear the trouble code after fixing the issue(s) the light will go out.
Had an 02 and bought with 91K... Your right on with those issues... If they don't know they'll find out! lol
Corey Martin he literally said the light is on because of his pipe
No offence, but this is not a buyer's guide. It's a video of your car with your subjective opinion.

Can you elaborate a little on the sticky dash problem.(what exactly is the problem)
two things: the IS300 has DBW (drive by wire) throttle system NOT drive by cable. The roof spoiler isn't factory, its aftermarket.
Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. :)
+Dan Khan Taillights, front bumpers, headlights are aftermarket too...
You forgot to mention that 02+ have the infamous sticky (melting dash)
But they are drive by cable...
its drive by wire at the throttle body. The cable doesn't move the throttle blade it only moves a sensor that tells the ecu what you want, then the ecu moves the blade electronically,,
whats the difference between cable and wire.
God that thing is pretty beat up
no kidding
Lol it's a New York car whadya expect?
d cp I noticed that as well, like pretty much right away

Nice video man
nice vid man. glad someone posted a video of this car.
+J Money MPG is around 18 in the city for manual. 23 to 25 on Highway. How it drives in the snow? All depends on the driver.
thank u for the video!!!
This offered almost no buying help. You just explained and talked about your car an what you did to it
I want to get this car but I live in jersey and everyone tells me thats a bad idea and too Get a car with awd
Your Center Console is different that mine. Where your traction control is is where u turn on the heated seats.
It's a GREAT Car.
P.s STOCK is the way 2 ride!.
dude your car is jacked up.
Oh he jacked you bitch you just got jacked bitch
I see you live in NY, how is it in the snow?Do you HAVE to put specific snow tires on?
I never got to use the is300 in the snow. But if you check out my other videos you can see how my Audi performed in the snow
@darius I am about 6'2" and i fit perfect. Sometimes it's annoying to lift the wheels to get in and out but it doesn't bother me.
Thank you! In the same height so looks like I'm gonna be getting one myself
+Darius Badri totally I say go for it!!
Joltran how can i contact u?
Michael Mitchell
@joltran how can i contact u? i want help with getting an is300 , i am living in california bay area. love the is3oo, help help help please
+Michael Mitchell yea 100% craigslist is your best option hands down
Worn out control arm bushings and ball joints are common with the higher mileage ones
what do I need to look for when buying one of these cars..?
nice vid bro thanks
I just bought a 02 is300 for 4000. It was repainted purple over the silver. Kinda chipping in some spots, not too horrible. The sunroof switches keep tripping me out cause it won't close right unless I time it perfectly. It's got 127K on the motor. Came with a "cold air intake" right above the header. Other than that it's bone stock. Really enjoying it. Don't really have plans to hoon it or make it a race car. I was kinda surprised it wasn't too fast off the line. But on the highway it mobs. I really like how tight the steering is and how good the breaks work. Would you say I got a good deal?
someone another I got mine for 3200 with 130000 miles
nice info.. thanks
Sure thing fam
Which front bumper is this?? It's 🔥
rocketz.net/product/is300-00-cw-style-front-bumper/ I love that ppl still watch this video!
I love how you said it's good yada yada yada but if you put a straight pipe the neighbours are gonna complain haha that sounded so funny idk why! xD
Btw this is my dream first car which explains why I clicked on this video:)
Yea broo it's a a amazing car! Affordable so much fun to work with and so many possibilities! And he's the neighbors hate it! But if you have any questions or anything let me know I'll post it or do a video. Great first car tho!
184k miles and u have no problems, how long hav u had it or wats the mileage now?
Hey Joltran, where did you get the straight pipe? I have an '04 and I really love the sound of this car. please reply, thanks
The straight pipe was a generic one. You can most likely get one online. But the majority of the exhaust including everything except
The straight pipe was HKS. But just google is309 straight pipe. I'm sure you'll find one :)
okay, thank you
If future buyers do intend to buy this car and if you guys want to change your own oil I suggest buying a oil filter wrench, because for some reason the oil filter on the IS is in a really tricky spot unless you have small hands.
Nah I mean I did mine myself lol and I'm huge.
Nice one Bro!
Love the car bro
This actually helped me alot. Im 17 and looking for a first car and im stuck between this and the GS300 but im glad i came across this video
+Vinnaj so so glad i can help id totally take an is over a gs
+Joltran do a video on ur audi a4
Hola me puedes decir que mofle tiene tu carro .? Gracias
1500kg
Siiiiick bro
Im good with n/a engines doesnt matter if it has turbos
The younger gems don’t know nothin about an all motor 2j build. But I’m sure someone’s out there tearing up a Supra with ITBs or something lol
I wanted to buy one of these but i didn't want to make the switch from going manual to auto so i went with a 6-Speed Jetta GLI VR6, still a nice car i would buy maybe later on really like the design and engine it has, ive seen a couple of nicely done modified ones in my area.
turbo the vr6. itll sound like a boeing jet and make like 400hp
Joltran haha If i had the money i would, pretty much sticking to Basic Bolt Ons and a good set of Wheels/Tires.
Wow, it sounds kinda like it did in Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Sweet!
+Michael Everett yea sounds super japanese
+Joltran Nice car, by the way.
How do you like it in the snow?
Damn man i almost bought one of these and my stupid ass bought a chevrolet cruze instead. I regret it
It's nerve to late
Get one bro!
Yoooooo bro I made that same mistake, I have a Cruze now wishing I bought an IS300 lol
Hows insurance on this thing? How much money have you had to spend while you owned it? Should this be my 2nd car if i only have $6000? I'm also considering the Acura rsx.
+TJ Smijons my insurance was about 400 a month i was under my moms ad 100000 percent say get the is300 10x better then the rsx
+Joltran it was that high even with u being on ur mom's insurance
I think you need to tighten your throttle cable it looked loose.
all is300s are like that
+Abe Faiz I'm not trying to argue and you are may be right I don't own one.
+nate s for some reason Toyota decided it'd be a good idea to put a lot of slack on the throttle
It killed my mpg but it woke that v6 up.
is your mpg reader wrong or are you actually getting 10 mpg...
what do set up do you have for exhaust? sounds amazing
I bought one today🙌
" I guess speed is important"😂😂
Thanks mayne
Glad you liked it :)
I'm deciding between 1st gen IS or second gen GS. What do you think is better?
Depends what you're looking for in a car. They're essentially the same car accept the is is available in manual and the gs is longer. It's ultimately up to you tho. I reccomend the is. A little more nimble
4:04 where do you get the carbon shift knob and the cover for prndl
Awesome video man, what's the difference between a 2004 and 2002?
+Juan Alonso minor interior ubgrades nothing serious
Hey How much power did just those mods make?
wake up call. its drive by wire throttle body it just happens sensor where cable hooks up sits on throttle body but its not connected to a plate
Doesn't this use premium gas? That's probably going to be a game changer for me, honestly. It's a very cool car but I'm a pretty big guy just coming off the '99 Dodge Intrepid, which is a pretty damn big car.
I'm trying to buy a manual transmission IS300.
+Ted Vang do it!!! amaing car comig your way
+Joltran it's soo rare though lmao.
I wish I had your center console. Mine is the same design with the cup holders and all but in the back 2001 doesn't have any elevation like yours its just a low compartment.
The cup holders are booty
whats up with the o2 sensor at 1 bank.. out are you reading correct measurements? should be at a collector..
What do you mean
Well it should be reading for all banks, not just 1.
How tall are you? What's the max height you think someone could be in it?
thanks for uploading these video man really helps I got a quick question...
+Alex Salazar i paid $3700 for mine with 175k IS' are expensive but it depends on the car. some are well kept some are beat... but im sure it fine :)
+Joltran thanks this video came in very helpful
+Joltran damn u over paid probably due to the upgrades u had on it
+Kay Young u brought it like that
whats the diff in the internals between the 2jzge compared to the gte?
+illest_evr THE GTE HAS STRONGER PISTONS AND RODS PLUS AN OIL SYSTEM THAT COATS EACH CYLINDER AND THE INTAKE MANIFOLD IS ON THE SIDE RATHER THEN OVER THE TOP BUT realistically the gte is 10x better. but the ge isnt bad obviously being the younger bro. with upgraded pistons and rods youll have a makeshift gte
Joltran oil coating the cylinder???
This car is very reliable mine has 260k miles and I always drive it hard everyday 💀
How’s it doing now?, I’m going to look at one with 187k today
I have a 200 right now. I really want to get a 300 and turbo it.
Go for it!! Cx racing makes an amazing
Turbo kit.
Thanks but now I'm looking at 350Zs and G37s. My friend loves my car so by selling it to him I'll always be close to an IS.
i dont think manual has the PWR button
Toyotas usually have a very short 1st gear. My car is the same way being that they usually dont like to go into 1st while moving
Tighten up the throttle cabble the pedal will feel better
Just saying brother
the throttle body is not controlled by cable, its driveby wire.. why they put the switch on the other side of the tb, i have no idea...
What kind of front bumper is that???
Guys I'm looking to buy one of these. 150000 miles, no problems.. $2000. Any thoughts?
I have 5k and want an IS300. It would be my first car. I'll be making about 800 every two weeks. Should I get it?
Yes with those credentials you can easily buy and maintain and is300
