Awesome collection. Other then maybe 6 or 7 of those albums. About 25 years ago, I walked into a thrift store and scored a massive pile Zappa albums at $1 each. I could not believe it. All the albums were near mint. Covers worn out, but so what. By this time I was already well deep in his discography. First album I ever heard was Sheik Yerbouti. I was either 4 or 5 at the time. Some point after that our local library had The Mothers Of Prevention on record, and I just didn't get it. Around this same time, I finally scored my first Zappa cassette. Tinseltown Rebellion. Played the snot of that tape. Was also a dollar because there was no cover. His albums weren't exactly easy to find locally. So it was just insane when BMG Record Club ended up having maybe 10 of his Ryko CDs up for grabs, so of course I signed up. And there it was. One of my favorite albums at the height of grunge. Weasels Ripped My Flesh. And wow did a lot of the people I hung out with did not like that. That was the one that really caused me to dive head first into the deep end. Like, if I can annoy skater punk teenage friends with this. Then something's right about it. I would still stick it in my top 5 albums.
My taste in Zappa over the years had definitely gone into the uglier side that seems most fans do not like. So it was no surprise when I was totally blown away by Lumpy Gravy. That's like click copy & paste, but with razor blades and splicing tape. But the one I really got hooked on was Civilization Phaze III. I used to work on a midnight shift and I would leave it on repeat all night long. And I tell ya. When the rain comes in at the end of the second disc. And it just happens to be raining out and the bay doors are wide open at 4 a.m. on a smoke break. It was like the perfect moment. But it's definitely an album that the rock fans will hate.
Out of everything that's been released, there is maybe 5 or 6 i haven't heard yet. And I honestly don't even know how many CDs I got of his. My guess is maybe 75-80. One of those moments where I end up spending 10 minutes just deciding which one to play. But there are great binges. Like playing all 6 YCDTOSA in a few weeks. Just because I wanted to listen to each one at least twice. It just kinda blended in the background as it played away. See, that would make a great satellite radio station. Just those 6 volumes playing all the time.
The new Whiskey album is quite good. Played it again last weekend. And love how they did that big doo-wop medley. Plus i still get a kick out of hearing The GTO's sing that Overture, Curtain, Lights song. First time I heard it, I couldn't stop laughing. Because all I could picture was Bugs Bunny & Daffy Duck in my head singing it.
Yep, I'm hooked. So much so that I end up doing weird things like rearranging the Ryko version of Lather into 4 cds, that I ended up taping on to two 90 minute tapes. Down In The Dew had to be used twice to fill in the entire file I created. But I won't talk about how many tracks it turned out to be when I unedited Lumpy Gravy and burned a cd with all (maybe) 72 parts as its own single cd.
Yeah, I'm one of those weirdo Zappa fans that won't shut up about him if you get me going.

I love Zappa but not on your level. Not even close! 😂 Not that I couldn’t be. I can imagine getting lost in his catalogue so I have only bought his sort of standard catalog. I have most of his standard releases on LP and a hand full of his on cd. Such a unique artist. No one like it before or after.
I did an interview here on my channel with Morgan Ågren. He is a drummer who played with Zappa once and also when to stay at his house. Great stories for Zappa fans.
I’m so jealous of your collection. I can only imagine the struggle to decide what to play.

I was fortunate to have seen Frank Zappa November 29th 1975 at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago . It was the One Size Fits All Tour ( my favorite) . Tickets at Ticketron were only $6 .50 ! I enjoy him more now that I'm older and I have more of his titles than any other artist . Just wanted to share that with you and I enjoy your site , especially your jazz titles.

Thanks for watching and writing a comment. I appreciate it very much that you take the time.
I would love to have seen him. I’m so jealous. Must have been a dream come true to also see the concert with your favorite album too.
I agree. The older I get (I’m 40 now) the better I understand his music. It’s the soundtrack for a lifetime.

Jonas , As Zappa fans we are so fortunate that Frank Zappa was a workaholic and recorded most concerts and studio work . To still be purchasing Frank's "new " records is a blessing for us by Frank. Take care !

I'm a hard core Zappa fan and collector. I have every official album as well as dozens of bootleg albums. He's my favorite artist and guitar player. I was lucky to have seen him in concert 10 times. I'm new to your channel, i enjoyed your video. I found out about you from Dereck.

Fantastic Zappa collection! Great video! For Joe’s Garage, please listen to “Watermelon in Easter Hay”. This is Dweezil’s favorite song from his father’s. In fact, here’s a performance in London, where he is crying while playing it: ruclips.net/video/g2NCiNKdCYU/видео.htmlsi=jz-PyKki-_c8B2HI. You said you like “You can’t do that on Stage”. Check out vol. 6. He does “Camarillo Brillo” into “Muffin Man” from Bismarck Theater, November 23, 1984. It’s not on vinyl (unfortunately). But I highly recommend checking it out. I love everything on that cd though.

Great collection, I have pretty much what you have, but Canadian and American pressings. "One Size fits all" is probably my personal fav as I love pretty much anything George Duke did, as for "Joe's Garage", it is a brilliant concept album that is worth a second go, but completely get if you don't like it, a very strange concept but equally comical.

Nice collection !!! You really need to give Joe's Garage another listen. And may I suggest you look for ''Just Another Band From L.A, '' Just FYI, the re-issues from Zappa family trust are quite good. Better sounding than the originals IMO.

Great video. I’ve got most of those, and a few that you didn’t show. Zappa’s work is so eclectic. There’s several records from every genre, it seems, therefore it is easy to find something by him depending on whatever mood you are in.

Nice collection, I would recommend listening to Joe's Garage again and focusing on the guitar solos, then you may open yourself up to the other genius that exists. You Are What You Is is one of my favorites. The "Ruben And The Jets: For Real" is a real band that is not The Mothers, but FZ produced their first record. They had a second album called Con Safos. I have a lot of Zappa stuff on my channel, I've been watching you for years, keep up the good work!

Nice review/introduction/overview Jonas - well done.
Like you, I'm very fond of Zappa - and has been since 1979 where I "met" him with "Sheik Yerbouti" and saw/heard him inCopenhagen a year later. I bought some of the laters albums, which in general don't hold up today - and I agree with you about Joe's Garage: Though there are some good tunes, the whole concept is overthought and just not good enough to take up 3 LPs.
Luckily I also worked my way back in the Zappa (and Mothers) catalogue and that's where the gold is!
I love the albums from the mid 70's - "Roxy & Elsewhere" comes out on top together w. "Overnight..." and "Hot Rats".
I suggest you check out the "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore"-series. The only one on vinyl (apart from the sampler you have already) is "Vol. 2 - The Helsinki Concert" which was recorded in 1974 (so in the golden area). It's a bit pricy, though. The others are on CD only but should be be re-released on vinyl.
You could also give "Tinsel Town Rebellion" (1981) a try. It's a live album w. some great musicians joining Zappa - and absolutely one of the best post-1970's FZ album.
Finally: I know you love old records, but if you go for best possible sound quality, be aware that almost all of the good FZ-albums have been re-released within the last 10 years. Mastered & cut by Bernie Grundman/Chris Bellman and pressed at Pallas, so it checks all the boxes 🙂

My father played on Hot Rats & the Ponty album among others. Zappa asked him to join the band for the overnite sensation album which didn't happen due to other commitments. He suggested Zappa hire Ralph Humphrey instead as he was available after playing with the Don Ellis big band. Glad to see you rate Weasels highly. I love it but I think it is too out for a lot of people. I recommend live at the BBC & Finer Moments which both feature the 68/69 incarnations of the band. Also, the Live at the Rainbow was recently released & is well worth getting.

And digital i have 152 albums, everything released up to the latest album.
40 plus years ago when vinyl was the only media I had all albums that was released up to the late 90s when I was stupid and sold everything, over 50 albums, many that impossible to find on vinyl.

Lumpy Gravy, Uncle Meat, absolutely great. My first disappointment (buying each album as they were released starting in 1966) was Chunga's Revenge, only a few great tracks, too many 200 Motels throw-aways... Sleep Dirt, one of my favorites, even if released without his permission. Civilization Phase Three, his final masterpiece as composer, so sad we have none of what he would have produced in the last 3 decades. Surely he would have been one of the greats, considering he already was.

The way you barely talked about "Waka/Jawaka" and "The Grand Wazoo" tells me a lot about your own listening. You're not a Zappa fan. Also, "Joe's Garage" is a classic Zappa. If you love Zappa, then this album is actually one of his more accessible albums. Also, "Sheik Yerbouti" was actually Zappa's best-selling album. Get your facts correct before you speak like it's the gospel truth.
