Main difference is that for every dirt block in the world you mine, the percent chance of mining a dirt block and having it be a Dirtiest Block INCREASES, while things like Nymphs for nymph banners and rare gold critters never get less rare.

I also *just* realized something any rare pre-hardmode drop *technically* gets more rare post-WoF, because now the mod pool is bigger and so the chance of something spawning lowers

I got 3 slime staffs from illuminant slimes before I got a rod of discord 😭 (fyi each slime staff is 0.01% drop rate from the illuminant slime while the rod of discord is 0.2%, so technically i should've got 60 rod of discords before I got 3 slime staffs, but chaos elementals are rarer enemies so I can't be sure, although I think it is safe to say that 3 slime staffs is maybe just slightly rarer than a rod of discord)
I got the item with a lead pickaxe before beating any boss in the world or completing the game in any world. It was pure luck, random seed and randomly found it!
In a recent playthrough (on a CelebrationMk10 world), I got it while turning a sky island into a glowing mushroom biome for Truffle. I hadn't heard of it prior (There's a lot from Labour of Love I overlooked completely, previously.), so I was rather perplexed, but, when I figured out that it could be placed in the pet slot, and I saw the pet, it certainly gave me a bit of a chuckle. I would say, though; yeah, the golden seahorse is probably rarer and harder to get in practice, even if the Dirtiest Block chances are lower on paper. ...if you don't just use the Builder's Workshop, of course, but that *_is_* blatantly cheating. :P

Quite funny. On a recent playthrough of Calamity with 2 friends on a Large World, I took the Onyx Excavator and ripped through merely a bit of the surface layer with it. In about 15k dirt blocks mined, I got a Dirtiest Block.
U know what makes this not so rare? The fact that somebody already found a seed where you can dig down for about a minute and get a dirtiest block. The probablilities calculated in the video are only applicable to the first dirt block you mine in the world (as it gets more common as you mine more dirt), therefore it is only the rarest block if you mined a few blocks per world
When I started my first 1.4.4 world (small) I randomly just found it whilst digging the hellevator. It remains one of the luckiest things I have done, on par with getting both ancient gold and iron helmets from one skeleton.
So I got this item on a large world without knowing about it before and it's a good thing I collect at least 1 of every pet/clothing items just as a "ahh I like me collections" so I'm rather happy that that item is off my unknown bucket list lol
Do you know that when you meet a golden critter for the first time it unlocks the entries for all of the golden versions of critters you already met (and will meet) So it doesn't mean you saw a golden water strider

The Dirtiest Block is one of the most Terraria Dev things I have ever seen the Terraria Devs do. I should be sitting here flabbergasted that they would even think of doing this. Instead I am fully ready to mine out an entire world just so I can say I got one. Terraria just does that to people.
I had started a new get fixed boi seed and I randomly got it while mining. I was super shocked given that you don’t even mine dirt in that seed until you go fairly higher up.

Ehhh it’s kinda rare, but at the same time just by playing the game normally I got pretty close to getting it. So it only took about another hour to 100%

The Universal Pylon is a certain to obtain item when the conditions are met. It's not really rare, as everyone could meet the conditions if they wanted. It's annoying to get, and it's rare people get it, but in and of itself, it's effectively a 100% drop chance, so you can't really call it rare.
I accidentally got this a couple days ago on the legendary seed, was making an arena and I didnt even know it was rare, one of my mates just casually said how rare this is bro
I enjoyed this video :) Also, I accidentally found the dirtiest block when I was going for the Good Riddance achievement, I just dug a hole until the underworld and used the Terraformer (or Clentaminator upgrade idk). That honestly surprised me when I actually get one and more surprised that it's really rare. Edit: yea i did get the achievement :/
waldo is harder to find, its not even guaranteed that there's one in a world. with both waldo and the dirt its easy to just use endgame gear and find it through brute force, however you are guaranteed to find dirtiest blocks if you rip apart the world. with waldo you may have to do this for many many worlds

In a recent playthroug, I got both the Nymph banner and the Rune wizard banner while I was farming for the Rod of discord. Truly a terraria moment :)
