The people who were asleep, remember the ship cut power pretty quickly, like seconds, they were likely in bed, jostled awake and when they checked the door it was locked.
What marked me more is that when the Captain was back in his hotel and being asked why he wasn't the last one leaving the ship, and him saying he was, the counter at the top left was saying there was still around 35 people still ON the ship. So they were still being evacuated, but he said "nah, we're all safe" -_-
internett historian is the master of making me hyped or stressed the entire crash got me on the edge of my seat and i already knew what was gonna happen
I remember seeing this on the news and after i read about it im surprised that only 32 people died. It sank on Friday the 13th 2012 on the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking. Coincidence I THINK NOT
49:55 That is because he's probably acknowledging the fact that anyone in those same conditions could risk becoming like that, meaning: never take yourself for granted, always keep your guard up; whereas (I suppose) you are thinking "that's never going to happen to me, I'm a better person than that", which you most likely are, but yet, it's always better to keep your guard up. During hard times, emotions can twist your reason in ways you couldn't possibly imagine and it's really hard to even realise it.
What made this highly amusing to me was to watch both your facial reactions to this film, knowing you both knew nothing. I wasn't disappointed. I was watching everything on the Concordia just to see if the cowardly captain got jailed and some justification for the passengers and loss of life.
The second a ship begins sinking the company that owns it no longer pays the crew, as legally they're paid to work on a ship and the second a ship begins sinking it is no longer classified as a ship
@Lemon Grab Well, I think you should reconsider your argument if it's literally appeared on the Wikipedia article about the Brace Position smack dab on the Myth section
I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but hiring a helmsman who has no prior experience, having a captain who's caused multiple accidents already, all combined with the language barriers and the complacency of people like the third officer makes it hard to believe that no-one at Costa Crociere saw this disaster coming.
Apparently, the captain was trying to do a nicety for some big shot. Also, the police chief thought the man was thinking of throwing himself onto the rocks when he was on that cliff so I would assume he wasn't all there at that point. I don't think that makes it any better and he still deserves his jail time 2x over in my opinion but really it seems like everyone threw him under the bus which kind of means it overshadowed the other screwups the bridge staff was making. Like if someone was relaying coordinates this might have never happened or he might have realized sooner he was too close. Like if he figured it out 8 secs sooner maybe this would have never happened. If you look at airliners, stuff like that would get you in some serious trouble. Really the whole command staff messed up bad and all deserve at least some time in the slammer, but it seems like everyone else got off with house arrest or community service. Only real saving grace was the company got hit by that 25% stock dip and the near 2 billion hit they had to pay for the cleanup.
Before I make my comment, big ups for reacting to a video this long! I made a big fat steak when I got home and saw the upload. We're vibing! Now, everybody makes mistakes. If the ship sank because of a language barrier and they notified the authorities immediately, this would have just been very, very, unfortunate waste of an absolutely beautiful vessel. They're right off the coast and the authorities can handle a situation like this easily with enough warning. Deciding to make everything worse by fucking lying about it is inexcusable bullshit. Like, why? You're going to rescue your ship that's fucked? How? Maybe nobody will notice that they're underwater? Be a man. If the ship is drifting and your position as 'captain' doesn't mean anything, stay in contact with authorities and instruct everyone to assist all the passengers, including going to every single cabin and making sure they're empty. Props to all the authorities including the coast guard.
there is a line where not revealing 100% of the truth is acceptable. now, this is for the passengers obviously. the reason is to avoid panic, since panic can kill them even faster. notice that is said "not revealing 100% of the truth" which is different of a complete lie because if they caught you lying then the panic will be even worse. So what does this means? The ship is sinking, yes, but you cant say it to the people, most will panic because of that. You can say that there are problems, you can say you are looking into it, that is acceptable. Now another difference to what happened there. when you dont reveal all the truth it has to be for one reason: making sure the people dont panic so you can evacuate them in a safe way. So the right thing to do would be say to them that there are problems with the ship, they are looking into it, but for precaution they need to go to the muster station, and eventually evacuate them, there will still be some people with a chance to panic but those we are told to detect and deal separately to make sure it doesnt spread. i want you to focus on what my point is here. im not saying they should lie, im saying they should only reveal the necessary to make people move to where you want them to safely evacuate them. and there it is another keyword in my point "to safely evacuate them" whcih is something they took a lot of time to do. In this case they lied to make them go to their cabins and stuff like that, when we (or at least me) were taught in the maritime school that we do that to evacuate them. This is for the passengers side, now you also have the coast guard. To the only entity that can provide rescue, you are right, you cant lie. I admit that you might not be aware yet if you can save the ship (not talking about this case in specific now), but you still need to contact them. contacting them doesnt mean you need to straight away ask for help, you can tell them the situation and say that you dont need help at the moment but for them to stand by. Whats the difference? well the difference is that the coast guard would be ready to act with all means necessary if the captain decides to ask for rescue. by lying they werent ready when that moment arrived.
I would like to point something out, they didn’t crash due to language barrier. Although that did play a small part in it, no the captain said port 20. However the helmsman, probably due to the stress of the situation and the fact that he was a nooby, turned starboard instead of port. That was their downfall. But other than that, both of you guys have great points.
@@austinmeyer_238 when there is an accident it is never for 1 reason. You can see on reports of any accident, they will reveal a group of reasons, since accidents happen after a chain of mistakes is made (a group of nearmisses leads to a bigger accident). You can pick 3 main factors here: Language barrier, complacency and inexperience. Language barrier is what started the problem, without it probably they wouldn't be on a situation where the other 2 factors would come into play. This is why we are told that on board it is mandatory to relay every order when it is given to us, and repeat it again after is completed, when who gives the order repeats again to acknowledge that the order is completed. So a order is said at least 4 times which helps to avoid misunderstandings caused by language barrier. Then with the problems caused by the language barrier they got themselves in a dangerous position, they could get out safely if they noticed earlier, but they didn't because of complacency. For this we are taught to always expect someone else to screw up. This one is a tricky one. What our teachers on maritime school said is that we shouldn't focus on the tasks of the others and should instead focus on our own, but at the same time trust that the others can fail, so to keep a lookout for that, so you know if any correction is needed. This usually is a problem because of that way of thinking: "it is not my responsibility (that specific task) so it is not my concern" this is wrong because on the bridge we are all responsible, each one at different degrees but still all responsible. Now language barrier lead to a dangerous position, complacency lead to a worse situation and now you have the inexperience, in this case from the helmsman. Unfortunately there is not much you as an officer can do in this part. You can only acknowledge the lack of experience of a specific crewmember and pay more attention to it. So here you can point at least 3 main factors for the accident each with the same degree on importance. One alone wouldn't cause this mess. But at the same time, take one (yes, just one) of these factors of the chain and you avoid the accident. Now from the 3, language barrier is quite difficult to overcome, they could try to find a way but it is hard on the spot to do so. Inexperience is the same as language barrier, there is not much you can do on the moment to correct it. This leaves one factor, complacency, this one they could and should have avoided, specially knowing that the other 2 factors were there (lets be honest, it is quite obvious the language barrier and inexperience) so they should have made an extra effort to make sure each task is being done correctly. And all this leads to another factor that you can add to the chain. Situational awareness. They had no clue were the ship was in comparison to the predicted course. This is other problem that the factor of complacency helped to worsen the situation. If they had all of them doing their tasks properly they would have known the exact position of the ship and corrected the course earlier.
I dont think I've heard of this incident but this was awful to watch and seeing how many mistakes could have been avoided and all the people who died could have lived it's just ridiculous.

@@MrPoc100 Yeah, but it was incompetence. He didn't maliciously murder anyone; which, I think is more important than the damage done. It like the difference between tripping and accidentally pushing a piano off of a building, which then kills someone; compared to intentionally pushing a piano off of a building to kill someone. The main purpose of prison should be to keep dangerous people away from the public, not punish people. I think that it's a decent verdict that encourages accountability, while not being excessive.

I mean.. to be fair.. What the fuck are they supposed to tell the passengers, except "everything is under control, please remain calm". Like seen here, as soon as they announced that the passengers get the fuck off that ship and sounded the alarms, panic broke out.

I think where the captain failed was his denial of the situation and his decisions to delay the abandoning of the ship (also all the lying). The decision to abandon ship should of been made after the engineers confirmed that at least 3 compartments had flooded on a ship rated for 2 compartment flooding. His own personal decision to abandon ship is also inexcusable. I believe the captain has a duty to go down with the ship. He did seem like he at least knew how to maneuver the vessel (though he should of never allowed the ship to get that close to shore) with that complex swinging move he attempted to execute to avoid the rocks that the helmsman ultimately screwed up by turning the ships stern towards the rocks last second. It's unbelievable the company was able to avoid criminal charges after hiring a helmsman who had no prior experience nor couldn't even communicate properly in English or Italian while also having a captain who had caused two ship wrecks previously.

"I slipped and fell in a life boat..." Best lie ever... (/sarcasm)
What made this highly amusing to me was to watch both your facial reactions to this film, knowing you both knew nothing. I wasn't disappointed. I was watching everything on the Concordia just to see if the cowardly captain got jailed and some justification for the passengers and loss of life.
You can have the most advanced technology but the weakest link will always be us humans
The second a ship begins sinking the company that owns it no longer pays the crew, as legally they're paid to work on a ship and the second a ship begins sinking it is no longer classified as a ship
Pretty sure that would depend on the company and country

Alright, been waiting for this. Thanks man
I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but hiring a helmsman who has no prior experience, having a captain who's caused multiple accidents already, all combined with the language barriers and the complacency of people like the third officer makes it hard to believe that no-one at Costa Crociere saw this disaster coming.
This is why you immediately shut all water tight doors preemptively just in case.
Of course there were dugs on board. All these rich people going without their cocaine? PUH-LEASE!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR CHAD, NIKKI, & SHORTY! :)
Even after having watched this video multiple times Nikki's reactions never get old 🤣😂
Apparently, the captain was trying to do a nicety for some big shot.
Nikki’s reactions is literally all our own😂😂😂😂
Before I make my comment, big ups for reacting to a video this long!
@@13dg I concede your point, there's a line. He found that line and then high jumped over it.
@@13dg i h listed the others in the video. As such i did not want to repeat what was said.

If you think that your judicial system is shit .... Well think of that of my country (I'm Italian), which is even more shit.
I hate the captain, he should be in prison for the rest of his life, but no, he only got 16 years in prison.
Well in fairness he didn't commit murder, he was neglectful of his duties, he should never hold a job that holds responsibility over any members of the public though
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 usually it 25 years minimum no ? it 32 peoples
Didn't he say it got raised to 26 years after the appeals?
If it helps, he'll be over 70 when his prison sentence ends, so it's entirely possible he *was* sent to prison for the rest of his life.

41:09 Bit of context for that clip. The pedestrian walking across the street got honked at by the driver with the dashcam for jaywalking in front of him. In response, the pedestrian decided to stare at the driver and intentionally slow down, but ended up walking straight into the pole because he wasn't looking where he was going.

I think the fall of 76 is probably his best one.
4:47 That reaction describes exactly how I saw myself the whole video
I mean.. to be fair.. What the fuck are they supposed to tell the passengers, except "everything is under control, please remain calm". Should they rather say "we're fucked, going down and probably gonna die"? Panic is the least thing you need in a moment like that.
Like seen here, as soon as they announced that the passengers get the fuck off that ship and sounded the alarms, panic broke out.
The amount of incompetency in that tragedy is super disgusting and that "captain" should be in jail for a LONG time.
Ooh, Nikki got a new look! I love it, it’s fabulous!
Oj, The engoodening of no man's sky, the fall of 76, Goop, Goop part 2 :)
When captains run routes an incredible amount of times they can feel the distance from shore by their eyes alone so thats why he said its a common thing but only common with very experienced captains
That's why historically the captain always went down with the ship. They always blame the caption regardless blame.
Imagine if the magician hadn't remembered to flip the latch. That would of been one of the most horrifical and cruel deaths ever. Locked in a box whilst everyone else flees for safety with no knowledge your even there whilst you wait for the ship to sink and for you to drown. 16 years just shows how light handed Europe punishments compared to the US is huge
...As a european some of this shit boils my blood. I'm sorry but he should rot away in jail. How come he gets to live a life while people who didn't do anything wrong and their families can't? Only way I could accept it is if he spent the rest of his days making up for it to each an everyone of those families and it still wouldn't be enough. Anyone with a little dignity or pride would've gone done with the fucking boat rather than be made the laughing stock
16 years is extremely long when you think about it though, I feel like he deserves that or the 26 years though. The U.S is kind of crazy by giving decades of prison for very small things.

His best video is definitely the engoodening of no mans sky or the fall of 76, please react to those
I think where the captain failed was his denial of the situation and his decisions to delay the abandoning of the ship (also all the lying).
