Loved the information the mic seemed muffled. If recording on phone the speaker couldve been blocked by desktop or phone case. I p much have to take my case off for phone calls because people have such a hard time hearing when its on. But you helped me decide which fish to go with so thank you!
I've always been a bit confused about these species, my dad has aquarium and use to call them both by naming them "cardinal neon tetras", plus they look similar. So it's a bit confusing. I think we have is cardinal tetras. They are actually kinda easy to see difference as the neon one is much more gray while the cardinal is much more red
Nice video! As for hard water, osmosis is also an option when you want to create any set of water parameters. It's just more complicated and there are more things to consider if you go that road. There are also products like aqua soil and natural scaping products like drift wood, dried leaves etc that will influence your water parameters. For example, the Dennerle aquasoil I'm using takes down the kH level. My tap water has a kH of 8, the soil takes it down to 3 or 4. So it also lowers the pH by about a degree so far.
Thanks for the info, learned a lot and answered my questions. Only have one suggestion for future videos, maybe make the background music lower than your voice so that it’s easier/more pleasant to hear what you’re saying 😊 thanks!
Good comparison. Another difference between Neons and Cardinals is price. That was the deciding factor for me to get Neons. I would have chosen Cardinals because of having more red. But the my LFS sells Cardinals for $3.99 compared to PetSmarts and Petcos that regularly have sales on Neons for $1.
I wonder why there is the price difference as well! Not so stark in my case though. Here we have Cardinal Tetras for a dollar a piece and Neon Tetras for 80cents, 70 cents each at higher volumes.
Thank you! Do you think Cardinals are less prone when it comes to diseases, compared to the neon tetras? As far as i know, the Cardinals are often caught in the wild, unlike the neon tetras which are "mass production" in terrible conditions?
It appears to me that the cardinals are easier to keep and they live longer. I cant agree with stick with your water type. I keep, wild discus and wild pleco scans while geophagus. I have hard water. I acclimate them properly when i get them, but after that, they do well and thrive. Although, I will say its a different story trying to keep certain African cichlids in softer water, especially wild ones and especially tanganyikans. Also, there are natural tricks to soften water and to harden the water. To each is own.
I bought a tank years ago that had both neons and cardinals together i was a rookie and was told to keep the tank at 28c (82f) and both the neons and cardinals lived for 2-3 years.. i had about 15 of each i think in that 2-3 years i lost 1 cardinal and 2 neons.. So was i lucky or is temperature not really that important for neons as they have been captive bred for many years now? Obviously i know better now and wouldn’t do it again.. i was a fish rookie back then :)
I have one kiss fish neons and Cardinals in a 55 gallon tank since they were babies I keep the water at 76 and now they’re two years old knock on wood and they’re still doing good and I have hard water
I've read that you should pick a dechlorinator that neutralizes ammonia, but if your tank is cycled properly won't ammonia levels be kept in check anyway? any advice?
My water is hard, and the temp is set at 79 degrees, but my 7 neons are doing quite well. I believe it’s because my tank is heavily planted, preventing them from being overly stressed.
I'm going to be setting up a 20 gallon with corydoras and a Honey Gourami as my centerpiece fish. I don't want to over crowd it and neons are smaller, while I've had fish before and currently I'm not that experienced and I heard Cardinals are hardier. Which would you get in my situation?
Great video! Cardinals are my favourite tetras. They look like little gemstones swimming around. Neons have been a staple in keeping fish since I was a wee lad. In my experience, I find that Neons are generally less hardy than ones from 30 years ago. I'm not exactly sure why that is. Maybe it has something to do with farm-bred Neons versus wild caught? Awesome information as usual, and thanks for posting!
I read somewhere that angelfish would eat neon tetras because they're so small. Also, would 77 F be bad for neon tetras? I'm just trying to accommodate for the other fish.
Very sad, my Neons after about and year and a half all passed away within days, love the video might think of getting Cardinals after my tank is cleaned out
You should keek tetras in a swarm of at least 10-15. 5 is far too low as the weak one get suppressed. Hard water = hard water fish; soft water = soft water fish 👏 Great attitude. Thanks.
Hey I have a 7.5 (12x12x12x12) gallon tank with a betta, two plastic plants, a clay pot where they can hide, gravel, a sponge filter, and a log like decoration. Should I get cardinal tetras or neon tetras? If its ok, how much should I get?
JustLem my opinion is not to put Cardinals or neons in that tank. Bettas can be territorial and may become agressive toward Cardinals or neons. Also, both Cardinals and neons are schooling fish and prefer being in groups. They are also very active and need room to swim. If you'd like to add tankmates for your better in the tank as it is, maybe try a couple nerite snails. They come in many colorful variations and won't reproduce in a freshwater tank
Dear Jake: I am slowly adjusting the temperature in my, 75-gallon tank to something more appropriate for my, five, remaining neon tetra. I don’t plan to purchase any more of them as my water is hard and alkaline. Hopefully, adjusting the temperature will help these, remaining five. +E. J. Brinegar I didn't even make the connection that you had said issues with the neons. Hope the gradual temp change helps! Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement. Enjoy your Sunday! 🙂
Dear Kurla Atabakan: There are many other fish in the 75-gallon which would not be averse to an increase in temperature. I did increase the temperature but continued to lose neon tetra. I am down to only one, at this time. This, beautiful fish is simply not suited to high alkalinity and hard water. Thank you for your, interest. Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

snowy matrix I have a 1 gallon planted jar Aquarium, so you can go pretty small. Just the smaller you go, the more limited you are on stocking options. I would suggest 5 or 10 gallons so you have more stocking options for fish, inverts, and plants
A long time ago I had Neons and had trouble keeping them alive. Probably because our tap water is very hard and alkaline. Now that I use 1/2 tap and 1/2 distilled in my tanks, I may try Neons again.
People can have unique experiences in this hobby. I believe that applies in your situation. I have successfully kept angels with neons for years and know others who have as well.
Great information but I had a hard time understanding you because of music was a little loud.
I'll try to keep that in mind in future videos! I appreciate you watching!!

Excellent vid! We have some Neons, love them!
Heather - Varuna Aquatics neons are great! I love both species
Sweet vid. I love them both. I just tend to lean more on Neons than Cardinals.

which is the little white and black fish at 3:42 ?? very good video
Very useful video Thank-you!
I’ve had so many neon tetras in my life I can’t even count I have super hard water and I’ve never had a problem with them I’ve never kept cardinals

Fix the audio. Music is way to loud and over powers your voice in spots.
My experience go with Cardinals I've legit had neons die because the water was off 3 Degrees on a water change weak buggers
How do they compare in terms of breeding? Can cardinals be bred the same as neons?
Nice info man i love them both
great info video.

OK so what is the recommended water hardness?
Which would you say is the more resiliant fish?

Same here...neons.
Too loud music that I can't hear you towards the end!
can neons and cardinals fight?
No. They don't fight each other.
Think I will try the cardinal tetra. I can never keep the neons for more than a week.Water temp might be the issue 78/80 thanks for video
Neons are factory bred and the majority of the ones shipped die within a week of selling

Try peat moss. It will soften your water and tan color your water but no harm.

Hello Guys, how much is a neon at USA? I'm from Brazil, and I like to compare.
$1.99 at my local fish store.
What is soft and hard water. Is it acidic and alkaline water. ?
Hard water means that there's lots of minerals. Rain water is soft, tap water is usually hard
Nice video
Sound mix is a bit too loud.
My neons tend to die unfortunately. Cardinals seem much more hardy
What size tank is this?
37 gallon
Any recommendations on the best place to buy Cardinals online?
I have had good experiences with Aquatic Arts. Sometimes they have big sales and sell out though. Give them a try and let me know what you think!

네온테트라는 섭씨 23도 (22~24)도 수온을 좋아한다. 카디날 테트라는 26도 ( 25.5~26.7)를 좋아한다. 열대어는 25~26도가 가장 좋을듯
