    Love cardinal's, mine are huge and 3 years old now. They are a staple in an aquarium for me along with neons. Great video.

      Didn't see any responses on my post sorry. Until now I got a comment so I will try to answer those. The cardinals I spoke of are 3 years old or a bit older now. Some have been given away since this post, to help others get into the hobby. The I have them mixed with 70 plus neon's and they all do well. My keys to success is tank husbandry, doing water changes and tank cleaning. Feeding quality foods. I think they relax more in larger schools and being with neon's help as well. They both spend time with each schooling back and forth. I run the temp between 73 to 76, ph 7.4 to 7.6. It's plants and the nitrates 10ppms to 15ppms and less. Filtering around 5x's an hour, running Aquaclear 75 and Fluval Series 7 407 model canister. Dose liquid fertilizer and a made up mixture of micro fertilizer. The plants provide cover and security which helps to reduce stress on the fish and in return keeps them healthy longer. My biggest is approximately 2" and the others ate 1 1/2".

    In Europe, larger tanks are recommended for these fish, like at least 1 m in one of the dimensions since they like to swim a lot. So after the flat here has been renovated, I want to get a 240 L tank. They'll have 1,2 m to swim in one direction. And with these schooling fish the more is merrier. Hobbyists and shops here recommend a minimum number of 10. Shops often do a discount if you buy amounts of 10. They are beautiful fish!

    • @fluval
      @fluval  4 года назад +1

      Paradise fish are not a good mix with the very peaceful cardinal tetra, their temperament will likely lead to them chasing a bullying most any small species.

    I recently got this same tank and unfortunately some of my neon tetras fell victim to the filter in the bottom...is there a way to make it less strong or a safe way to cover it?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  4 года назад +1

      You can use some foam filter blocks to wedge inside the inlet compartment but take note that they need to regularly rinsed out to prevent clogging.

    Hello, I was wondering if Cardinal Tetras will eat or harass adult red cherry shrimp?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  2 года назад +1

      Hi there! In our experience, Cardinal Tetras will generally leave Cherry Shrimp alone! They may try to pick at small shrimplets, but if your tank has some plant cover they'll be okay.

    What technical equipmet like air pump and water filer do I need to have Cardinal Tetras?

    • @fluval
      @fluval  5 лет назад

      They can be kept with an air pump, sponge filter and heater + thermometer, a canister filter is a good idea and live plants can be incorporated. A pH and KH test kit will help as well is assuring you are maintaining the right water values for them, acidic and softer water conditions are preferred.

    • @gamersworld7092
      @gamersworld7092 5 лет назад

      But I read that they may be in aquarium without air pump?

    What is killing my cardinals? I had 12, heathly and stable, and bought six more. These six sickened and died over the next week, and both my corydoras also died. The survivors now only swim in the fast moving water from the filter, evidently trying to shake off or avoid some sort of infestation.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  3 года назад

      Hi Jim, we're sorry to hear this is happening! We encourage you to test your water parameters and to consult with your local aquatics retailer for assistance.

    • @jimmccann3856
      @jimmccann3856 3 года назад

      @@fluval But the water parameters have not changed. The problem came in with the new cardinals. So, typically, what sort of disease or infestation could that be? You would know far better than I.

    Are there any cardinal tetras available that are captive bred? I’d rather not have them wild caught, as I don’t want the wild population to diminish.

    Can Cardinal and Bloodfin tetras live in harmony? I am new to the hobby and looking to have both these in my tank together. Thanks.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  3 года назад

      They can! Neither species is particularly aggressive, unless stressed for one reason or another (tank too small, not enough conspecifics, water chemistry off, etc.).

    What is a life span of cardinal tetra

    • @fluval
      @fluval  4 года назад

      In an aquarium the expected range is approximately 2 to 4 years, do note that at 2 years+ that is really old for a small tetra.

    Is cardinal tetra another name for neon tetra

    • @DeFreeseAquariums
      @DeFreeseAquariums 5 лет назад +1

      Neons are a different fish, the way to tell them apart is the red stripe does not run the entire length of the body and generally smaller than cardinal's. They both are of the Paracheirodon family but different genus.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  5 лет назад

      Neon tetras are Paracheirodon innesi, related to but not the same as the cardinal tetra, Paracheirodon axelrodi.

    • @fluval
      @fluval  3 года назад

      Micropredators such as Cardinal tetras feed throughout the day in the wild, consuming very small portions each time. It's a good idea to try to replicate these feeding behaviors in captivity!
