One thing I think you may have missed in the first few episodes is that every time skip is shorter than the one before it. Frieren is gradually becoming more connected with the people around her, making it harder to simply lose decades doing nothing like the first two 50 and 20 year timeskips. By the time the fourth episode rolls around the timeskips are down to a couple months instead of years. It's a work in progress for her.

But I completely agree with your original point, her time spent dawdling on random things has decreased because she has begun to value Fern’s time more than she has valued her own time in the past. Part of that may also be Frieren trying to value their time together, not wasting it now that she’s realized just how limited that time will be.

This fight scene was the first 'hype' scene that we got in frieren and it was absolutely amazing
But what really hit me like my mom used to, was the end of episode 4
At the start of that episode we had a flashback of frieren saying to the party that the ten years she spent with them was not even 1% of her life, and was therefore insignificant. And she thought eizen would understand that sentiment since he also has a long life.
At the end of the episode, when frieren departs to go to heaven, eizen says the absolute golden line: 'that one one-hundredth changed you'
This hit me like a freaking wreaking ball. This line is trying to say that its not about the quantity of time spent, its about the quality. And that even a small fraction of your life could end up changing your life completely.
This single line is my absolute favorite line in this show and possibly in all of anime

So he plsced his own sratues on every minor settlement he could and statues of the whole party in all major ones, msking sure she can see him wherever she goes and a lot of people also remember her, the only gero they will actually have a chance to meet in the future.

Another quick couple lines that establish time advancing was when Frieren flies up to take her shot at him and he remarks "you can fly now". Many episodes later Frieren has another one of line explaining why they can't get out of a difficult situation by mentioning that they've only had the ability to fly for 40 years. Neither line was necessary, and both can be easily missed, but together they reinforce each other's point.

This show is, at its core, *very* romantic, as in the philosophy. Romanticism is all about “smelling the roses” and taking your time, about compassion and spirituality. It feels very Tolkien in its conception of elves, and Wordsworth in its ideas of appreciation of the mundane. And I think that’s beautiful. I’m so sick of post-modernism and devil-may-care nihilism, this is absolutely a breath of fresh air.

What you said about the human experience vs the vastness of time really made the gears in my head turn a bit. I've said somewhere before that time itself is a character in this show. The passage of time and how things develop will be a constant theme. Frieren is not only on a journey of self actualization and gettin in touch with her emotions and appreciating shorter lifespanned beings whatnot. Frieren herself is an achor to the past, a measure and reference point by which the story and world almost revoles around. Her almost perfect memory of past events, scenes and even food make it much more apparent how much things can change even in short timespans.

(just noting i've only seen the first five episodes)
For me the fact that Frieren's first episode started out so slow, even with the massive timeskips, was like half the reason I got interested in seeing more. It made me feel like it actually had the time to tell it's own story unlike many other more fast-paced series I've seen recently where Something Big Is Always Happening Every Second. It gets a bit tiring lol. I liked how it started with the end of the titular Journey, which had me expecting an In Medias Res deal, but that never happened! We are not re-living their adventure. It's done and we can't go back in time. We only get to catch glimpses of it from Frieren's new adventures when she comes across things that remind her of the Hero Party.
Back to episode one; The way Frieren spoke about time piqued my interest instantly. "A mere 10 years" or "It's just 50 years from now". I read another series over the last couple years that explored the same theme of how different Fantasy peoples perceive time and I loved that idea. How it can lead to frustration, misunderstandings, or feelings of being left behind. In Frieren's case, apathy. Why bother learning about the others when they will only be a part of your life for the equivalent of a few weeks? Then came the funeral scene. It hit me hard. Suddenly she realized she did care, that she would miss them, then followed by the grief of realizing she never really got to know them. That scene completely cemented my interest in this series. It explores the same theme, but from a perspective that's new to me and I love it!
On a sidenote, while it could just be my tiny laptop screen and poor eyesight, it looks like there's a "grainy" texture on top of everything which really reminds me of anime from ~2000 and older. Find a high quality video of any Ghibli movie from the 80's or 90's and you'll see what I mean! Almost like an old scanned picture. Or I suppose scanned animation cells. If that is intentional it is a really nice touch that adds a big nostalgic quality to the show.

Personally I really like the fact that a majority of chapters are isolated arcs that cover various events, locations, and personal character moments. Obviously the story progresses in a linear manner, one event leads to the next, which is one step closer to the end of their journey. It’s just refreshing to read a story where the characters aren’t stuck on one arc for 10 to 50 or even 100+ chapters (sorry One Piece, I love you but a 200+ chapter arc makes my brain tired). This style of storytelling also makes the few multi-chapter long arcs hit that much harder. The First Class Mage arc, Macht of the Golden Land arc, and Goddesses Monument arc all feel extremely satisfying and refreshing as it breaks up the pacing.
It’s definitely worth a watch/read, it’s one of the better mangas to come out recently in my opinion.

Thats a point in the story. On one end, elves like frieren, or the demons who have a similar lifespan, can learn an absurd quantity of magic. Certain spells demand even hundreds of years to be mastered. But in the other end, they got so much time they slack off. Taking way much more time to do certain things than humans who don't have the luxury to wait another millenia to solve a problem arising. So the humans are the motor of evolution in sciences, magic, technologies, etc, because they get to work faster. It is truly amazing.

The reason why humans advance so quickly is because of their short lives. Hence why Frieren comments of her lifestyle as 'lazing around' because elf lifespans are very very long that passion, ambition and innovation can wait while they spend their time leisurely with little consequences. Humans have very short lives compared to elves, and Fern's impatient attitude and being able to learn magic techniques in a span of 4 years instead of 10 years for an average mage is emphasizing that fact of human nature. This is why humans can get strong very quickly but like a blazing fire, it quickly goes out eating all the fuel.

While humans have ambition, elves will obsess over a specific hobby/skill which they can be extremely good at, given their extremely long lifespan. And another thing that they do in order to push the insanity brought by living very long(lazing around is one of them) is by treating said 'obsession' into an 'art' of sorts. This mixes well with their nature towards leisure.
Hence why another anime with a lot of DnD vibes like Goblin Slayer, has their elf ranger being able to pull trickshots with the bow at ease, like a form of art.
I have no issue with long-life races as they have their own strengths and weaknesses contributed by their lifespan. Humans can have many, many generations over a millenium, whereas an elf procreation cycle might require a few millenium to generate just one... So genetic mutations and mini-evolutions are more common with humans than with elves. Some are bad, some are good, you'd get natural prodigies like fern and stark.
That said the average human cannot fare well against an elf, at least in Frieren-verse. Because obsession and art(has a similar mini-evolution cycle of sorts) if given time(which elves have a LOT of), would be leagues greater than whatever an individual human can pull off, and they can make it cooler(the art part).
Humans pretty much rely on luck and grit to become powerhouses, but most of their strength relies on their quick adaptation and society. Individually, humans are pretty weak.

I genuily love not only this scene but this fight aswell.
Aside from everything you said in this video, in this fight we learn why it was so important to kill this demon as soon as he was unsealed.
He was a genious in magic and im sure that if he were to roam free in the present day, would very quickly learn and improve all the knowledge that humanity managed to achieve.
Like if you gave Isaac Newton all the present knowdlege we have of physics im pretty sure he would be able to improve them even further.
I personally love that, an enemy thats not dangerous cause his power level but because of his actually scary intelect.
Also this fight is a good foreshadowing that Fern is quicker than Freiren at casting spells, wich i also like.
ALSO I just noticed this but you can see IN the fight how smart Qual is.
At the beginning, Qual fires a massive beam at Freiren and Fern wich is blocked with 1 big barrier by Fern.
Then he starts launching a bunch of small attacks wich again are blocked by Fern, BUT as soon as 1 of them breaks, he inmediatly understand how tough this defensive spell is and shoots another big spell, but this time the spell shatters the shield almost instantly.
Thankfully Fern put 2 shields but it just comes to show how quickly this man went to getting his most powerful spell countered to knowing the limitations of said counter and adapting acordanly.

my favorite scene was the episode where Frieren was looking for the ring that Himmel got her. She offhandedly said that Himmel probably didn't understand the significance of it, but we see a memory of hers where she realizes that Himmel not only understood it's significance but even bent to one knee to put the ring on her finger. seeing that scene makes it hard to rewatch the first episode without crying..

this video just popped up on my feed so im late to the party, but i just wanna appreciate your joke about frieren being similar to violet. these 2 shows are my absolute favorites and thats probably because they are reaaallly similar, and not only because both have OSTs from the mastermind evan call. both are basically a drama about a character trying to learn to handle human emotions, i dont know what that says about me but i resonate so much with both of these characters.

I watched the first 3 episodes and didn't find it very interesting even though they did get me with the waterworks. I ended up restarting a few weeks later and didn't really notice at first the analogue between Himmel and Frieren, that the people's love for him was also the love for her. Himmel's openness to receiving that love contrasted her apathy and made it seem like he was basking in the love because he was self-centered, when all he was trying to do was demonstrate, over and over, that all she had to do was indulge herself and live in the moment, that her long life could be made up of those joyful moments. Himmel's attempts at trying to make sure she'd have reminders of that were really touching. Just one of those series that you have to let cook, apparently.

episode 3 reminded me of a game called "the longing". It's basically a game about finding solutions by utilizing time. Only thing is waiting too long or too short may do you harm. Episode 3 was almost as if Frieren knew that waiting for humans to develop a way to mitigate zoltraak's damage and even outdate it to the point that it becomes a beginner spell was the solution.

The zoltraak scene solidifes that Frieren being an elf and time passing matters. Frieren being alone after her party broke apart and her old friends started dying isn't just a convenient way to get Frieren on a new journey, it's directly tied to the plot, story and worldbuilding of the show (and manga). Excelent writing

What sold me on Frieren was Stark's fight against the solar dragon. I know it's a monkey opinion to be swayed by something so flashy and extravagant however I just couldn't help but enjoy the sight of the small and fearful Stark beating down a large and powerful dragon that he thought he could never scathe. That combined with the flashbacks and the music and the PLACEMENT OF THE MUSIC was something I never really knew I needed in an anime. The passage of time, mortality, what it means to have a connection with another person, are all the themes of the show. Of course they're going to be repeated over and over. With each iteration we gain insight into Frieren's view and really feel the disconnect between Frieren's life and her world vs the life and worlds of the normal people around her. Each time it happens, she grows a little, and comes to truly understand others, which is her main struggle. It's poignant.

the moment that sold me was when Frieren realised she was tricked by Heiter
this was reinforced by subsequent episodes where we see further parts of his plans
learn some of her secrets "in case of"
sow the seeds of adventure in certain individuals including the one whith the potential of becoming a priest
I'm fairly certain he had a hand in Eisen geting an apprentice
    adopt a mage child
trick Frieren into teaching the child
Send them on an adventure where they'd encounter every other piece
Thus leading to Frieren getting another group to look after her and take the mantle of the party... likely also taking care of remants of the demon king's forces that slipped away.
I would not even be surprised if his plan include for the new party to form the next one, starting a tradition that would follow Frieren througth the ages.
Heiter (like gandalf) is a proper example of how priests should be written in medieval fantasy.
He is dead and is still the best character, not to forget had better long term planning than the immortal.

Fern and Frieren can be compared to using modern body armor and a 50. caliber against Qual who is like just having developed gunpowder.
Jokes aside, the Qual Scene was very important and subtle at the same time. Fern is first scared about this fearsome demon mage with his epic Zoltraak magic just to be disappointed when she is actually facing him in combat. She is too young to know the weight of 80 years of continuing research and development in order to counter Zoltraak. Frieren on the other hand demonstrates what a long lifespan can achieve, for her it's like an afternoon study session, which results in a casual oneshot kill.

I don't think she should develop her personality to become more like humans at all. Why would a Zen master who has seen things come and go for 1200 years and has thus become less attached need to learn to get caught up in the chaos of human emotions and attachments? Is that even possible? I mean, Zen practitioners practice their whole life to become like how Frieren is portrayed. She's kind, carefree, not robotic or anything. Ok, she may not have access to some deeper emotions that humans do have, and get jojo'ed around by all the time. And it may be interesting to investigate that a little bit and connect a bit better with others.
