New Balance shoes usually lift you up a little so that you're a little "taller" when you wear them--not by much, though. I'm a 5'6" guy, so I have to appreciate things like that.

To break it down, the NB is your classic yard-work shoe and has a more simplistic look, while the Monarch is just as qualified for yard-work as the NB, it's a bit flashier, definitely great for going to your local Applebee's, Champ's, Chilis, or any of your local eateries.

I have both. They are both comfortable. But between the two, the Nikes are more comfortable. But, the New Balance will last longer. I bought 2 Nike Air Monarchs in less than a year due to the sole separating from the shoe. Had to glue the sole back to the Nike shoe.
I wore these freshmen year in Public High School, all the kids with $90 Air Force Ones made fun of me. It took me a while to realize that having your dad as a role model when your 14 isn't cool.
As a middle aged guy, I prefer the NB623 to any shoe. I have got....you ready for this....5 years out of 2 different pairs of these Bad Boys. Everyday wear to boot. Just bought some pricey Brooks running shoes with some obscene amount of rubber on the bottom making my equilibrium all out whack because I think my brain prefers the flatter New Balance 623. These shoes are a win for dads and middle aged guys anywhere. Those days of spending $130 on shoes to impress anybody via the 1980's are over. My experimentation with the Brooks shoes is over also. Stick with the tried and true $59.00 NB baby!!

I’m from Pennsylvania, and in June every year, the Wheel Horse Collectors Club has a wheel horse show near Gettysburg, in Arendtsville (I believe that’s the town name), and I know it would be quite the drive, but it’s really cool and a great experience, and you should definitely look into it and try to come, most people camp there from Thursday-Saturday. It’s super cool!
