- Learn to machine knit a slouchy beanie hat on a knitting machine. In this tutorial I am using a Silver Reed LK 150 but it is the same process on the Brother KX 350 or any other mid-gauge knitting machine. This project is suitable for beginners with some experience. If you are very new to machine knitting, I recommend making a basic hat first and working your way up from there. • Brother KX 350 or LK 1...
This is a warm, comfortable hat that can be worn slouchy or scrunched up tighter on your head.
I am using Berroco Ultra Alpaca yarn which is a 50% Alpaca and 50% wool yarn. This is a #4 weight yarn in the US, which is also known as Aran or Worsted weight yarn. Any similar yarn should work. This yarn is readily available in local yarn stores or on Amazon here:

The yarn clips I used can be ordered here: amzn.to/35Ndo3l
I am an Amazon Associate and I make a small percentage of sales if you purchase something from one of my Amazon links.

I like the hat design. It would be fun to run bands of different color with each turning. Thanks for sharing.
Good idea! Thanks for watching!
That's so cute! Thank you for all of the details.
Great!!! Another option for us lk150 users!! Thank you!! Love your videos
Thank you so much!
So glad I found your videos! Your camera angle is perfect so I can see exactly what you are doing.
My mind is blown watching you pull all the pink out. So excited to try this!
Great! Let me know how it goes!
I made it! It was easy easy due to your wonderful instructions! Honestly- the only problem I had was on my end: I have a garter bar and I struggled endlessly with it. Once I did your method of waste yarn it was smooth sailing! I made mine in purple worsted wt yarn I just upped the tension dial and it worked out well. I am giving this as a gift today I plan on making another one. THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!
That's fantastic! I don't have a garter bar for the LK150 so I haven't tried it that way. I do have plenty of waste yarn, so that worked best for me, too. I also wanted this pattern to be easy to do on the KX350 which doesn't have a readily available garter bar.
I made this hat several times while I was designing it and then when shooting the video. I found that once I got in the groove it went pretty quickly.
Also, I gave one to my friend and sewed on some of the little bee charms I had left over from the honeycomb hat in a different video.
Love you tutorials. Just starting to learn with a brother kx150. Having lots of fun so far. Only 1 think I would like suggest. When you tell all the tools needed, how about letting us know what kind of yarn and how much. Thank you and have a happy day.
Another winner, Anna. Thank you.
Thanks Bonnie!
I really like this pattern. I want to make this up tonight. Thank you for sharing!
Great! Let me know how it goes. This pattern hasn't been as popular as some of the others; I think people think it's going to be difficult because of all the re-hanging, but it really goes pretty fast once you get in the groove. If you're not good at rehanging stitches yet, you will be by the time you finish the pattern.
lOVE IT, so glad I found you
This is amazing your tutorials are wonderful
Thanks so much Steve!
@@AnnaHaferman your so welcome, when im not poor ill get ya a coffee
Great hat. Thank you ❤️
Thank you so much!!!
Excellent hat! Nice instructions :)
Thank you!
Thanks for your videos. I am curious to know if you use your waste yarn for anything or is it just discarded?
You can reuse it but it means rewinding small pieces and knotting them together which takes a lot of patience and time. I usually use old yarn that I get cheap from the thrift store or for free so I feel okay about discarding it. I don’t buy new yarn and use it as waste yarn.
hi. how many stitches per inch? very lovely hat
Thanks for watching!
Many thanks.
Thanks!
Very interesting, I love it but I wanna ask, is it the same number of stitch number on the cam lever or there was an increase or decrease?.
The same stitch size throughout. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video tutorial. I just purchase LK150 and learning from your videos. Where can I buy those weights with a hook that you have?
They’re called ribber weights. Check on eBay. These are the one pound size.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE A HINT THUS---- WITH BEG. OF WORK DONE TOO NEXT AT TURNING POINT !!! USE FINE CROCHET COTTON OF A DIFFERENT COLOUR TO KNIT ONE ROW ONLY### THEN USE THE WASTE YARN (CONTRAST COL.) AND KNIT 8 ROWS. TURN WORK AS PER PATTERN CHOSEN. KNIT NEXT 10 ROWS (OR CHOSEN ROWS REQUIRED) AT THIS STAGE DO AS 1st WITH CROCHET COTTON ONE ROW ONLY AND THEN WASTE YARN. CONTINUE SAME UNTIL PROJECT IS FINISHED. NOW PULL OUT THE CROCHET COTTON AND YOUR WASTE YARN SHOULD FALL AWAY. WIND UP THE WASTE YARN AND COTTON PIECE, CAN BE USED MANY TIMES. NOTE THAT YOU MAY HAVE TO DISGARD
WASTE AFTER A FEW USES. ### DON'T HAVE ANY KNOTS ON THE CROCHET COTTON ## PLEASE TRY IT OUT, YOU WILL BE SURPRISED.
Thanks for the tip. There are many different ways to do it; choose whatever is easiest for you. You would only want to do seven rows of waste yarn if you use a ravel cord or your carriage will be on the wrong side.
@@AnnaHaferman Thank you, yes I understand that now.
Quick question what size beanie does this end up making? before i follow this video to the T so i know if i should cast on more stitches or not cuz i have a big head
Sorry I don’t remember but it fit me and I have a big head. It also depends what yarn you use.
@@AnnaHaferman turns out im using dk so im kinda just guessing, its my first project sso mostly doing it for fun... did 127 cast on because my gauge is different for using dk and did about 30 rows initially for about 3.5'' for the folded brim... resting for a little but then will continue and adjust as i go... if it works out ill post what i did in your group
Thanks for the tutorial.. your watch is driving you crazy right?😂
No. I was using it as a monitor to make sure everything I was doing was in frame.
Lol. Brilliant! I really appreciate your tutorials. I am a beginner machine knitter and can actually make your works. Thank you for your time and efforts again.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Can I use a standard gauge double eye needle to bind off on a Brother KX 350 (or LK 150)? If not, where do you find them? I searched both ebay and Amazon. Thank you & I love this hat! Thanks for the video!
Yes, you can. You can also use a darning needle but here's a link for a double eye transfer tool. amzn.to/3uxO101
Thank you!
Hi Anna, I was knitting on my LK 150, just now, a baby cardigan, I hand knit rib, but as I was knitting some stitches didn't knit, only on the right side, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, the brushes on the carriage I feel is the problem, iv checked everything else, I'd love your advice please, maybe I could remove brushes and check ? Thanks
But one question why are you looking at the clock every time 😊
Because it’s a monitor for the camera. I’m trying to make sure what you need to see is in the frame.
what kind of watch you have it looks like it has a camera on it?
It’s an Apple Watch. I have it linked to the camera on the phone so I can see what’s going on in the shot. I use my MacBook instead now
@@AnnaHaferman that's awesome never seen something like that but I never looked into the watches lol that's really cool
In this video you say to knit 12 rows between the waste yarn, but when I read the pattern in the perks, it’s says to knit 20 rows. Is it 12 or 20.
Sorry, it’s 12. Thanks for letting me know.
@@AnnaHaferman the written pattern also says to knit to row 126, but in the video you knit to row 156.
Thanks; I’ll look at it and correct it tomorrow. Whatever I said in the video is correct.
Can I use Red Heart #4 Medium yarns in the LK150?
Red Heart is really stiff. Some number 4 yarns will work but I’ve never had any success with Red Heart.
Hi, where can I find your written patterns?
I answered this in your other comment, but if you become a channel member you will have access to the written patterns.
@@AnnaHaferman , thank you 😊. I apologize for not noting it.
where can I buy a cast on comb
Which machine do you have?
Hi, I would like to know for the lk150? Thank you.
You need a garter bar.
If I was going to do a lot of these hats I might invest in a garter bar. Using the waste yarn is an alternative to buying an expensive garter bar. Thanks for your comment.
Where would you get a garter bar for a Brother KC 350, and aren’t they really expensive?
@@marcymorgan243 Yeah, they never made one for the KX 350 as far as I know. There is one for the LK 150 but they are expensive.
I wish you wouldn’t be so busy on your watch.
I have my watch connected to the camera so that I can make sure that what needs to be shown is in the camera view. I try to do it off screen but it is hard for me to see if it's too far away. I am sitting off to the side to stay out of the shot which is an awkward way to knit. Keep in mind that I am knitting, explaining and shooting the video all at once. Thanks for your comment.
@@AnnaHaferman ok I thought you were in a hurry sorry. And thank you
