We really need to have more prototypes like the group c era back in sports car racing. Modern day prototypes are just so ugly in terms of looks and style.
Because it IS more modern. This came after the 787B, after FIA rule changes made it impossible for Mazda to race the RB26 engine in European competition.
Why did FIA made those stupid rules and impossible for the Mazda to race/use the RB26 engine in European competition? Were those European ashamed and pssy of Japanese cars beating them or what? I think I've heard of something similar in Australia(?) banning the Skyline from racing there. Japan just should've made their own race league or whatever and forget racing in those places they were banned or made impossible to race.

If Mazda made a car that sounded something like this but in street legal form, they would've had a hot seller, we don't even get rear wheel drive Mazda anything with power anymore, come on man, make something that'll give a mustang, a camaro a run for its money, a challenger to the challenger, which is out selling the camaro and mustang last few years here ina dee U.S. Of A.
That was the problem for this beauty, sound regs at many of the tracks (locals...) made it impossible for Mazda to make it competitive with the mufflers. I think they also had a lot of electrical problems that year. Saw it at Laguna Seca in 92, and wanted it to do well. As a fellow Tifoso, l bleed Ferrari Red, but LOVE the sound of the Mazda racing rotaries.
mazda should go back to styling like furai was headed…art meets speed, it'd of kept the sport on a different pillar, now it's just clear how manipulated it all is
The 787B has the accolades of winning Le Mans and I love that car but the RX-792P is faster and the better looking IMO. "Although I have been lucky enough to drive other models from Mazda’s historic race car collection, the 792 is certainly the most capable and the fastest of the GTP-era fleet." - Pro Driver, Tom Long

Same goes for Subaru's boxer engines: the firing of the engine doesn't come out in one long stream of explosions, but with pauses between because of the firing order.
Sounds all right but compared to the leman winning beast 787B the 787b sounds mostrous and performs better...despite the abnormal gas consuming flaw it had.
Kaptain Dankbeard the 787B and RX 792P both use the R26B, no internal differences except setting the engine up for sprint style racing, so they sound the same.
@@oldstyleanalog6459, you guys are all comparing apples to oranges. The 787B was a Group C car designed to race at Le Mans - 24 hour race. The RX792P was designed for the IMSA series. Vastly different rules and tracks so very different cars. Both pretty amazing in my book.

Incredible machine. I was at the 12 Hours of Sebring back in '92. The organizers wouldn't let the car race because it was TOO LOUD!
