- Love it or hate it - there's no debate at all when it comes to the performance of this little engine. It may only have an 0-6-0 wheel configuration but trust me, that's all it needs!

A fine example of a WWII-era British locomotive, the Bulleid Q1 was truly innovative, due to it's simple design, reliability, and ease-of-maintenance.
I live in the U.S. So I've never seen a british loco in person but I love the Q1 and I know a few more but you are teaching me about british locos
I am an American, and my favorite locomotive is the 4-8-8-4 Bigboy but my favorite British steam engine has go to be this one! It's so different from the other British locomotives that been hiding all the mechanics like a fat guy in the summer :/ but this finally is a uk loco that shows art ,power ( maybe not intimidation) in the mechanics!
A fantastic locomotive. I seem to be one of the only people (that i know of) That likes the Q1. Amazing video!
Glad you like it Will, honoured that it's the first from the mailroom, she looks more powerful on your layout than on mine, but thats probably because mine's uphill. Anyway, enjoy her.
One of my favourite locos of all time! The Bullied "Boxpop" wheels are just gorgeous aren't they? Really nice model!
*Boxpok drive wheels... Sorry, they're used quite commonly here in the US and I am quite fond of them, because they were used on my all time favorite locomotive... Also grammar mistakes kind of make me... Not upset per say, but... You get the idea...
Ahh so I've been saying it wrong for all this time! Haha! Never knew they were used in the US! Thanks for mentioning that!
Tom Branchline Yes, they are very common on express passenger locomotives, including my favorite class of locomotive... Here's an image, if you want: www.railarchive.net/randomsteam/images/milw104.jpg a beautiful locomotive with beautiful Boxpok drive wheels!
I've been looking forwards to this particular engine for a while. Something about the funky shape I love.
Ah the Q1 I remember seeing the Q1 run at the bluebell railway many many years ago on a Christmas train crumbs that was a while ago :-) great video Will
I love, thank you Conner for sending it in to Will. It is a beautiful model, it's quirky looks just adds to its appeal.
My all time favorite loco. I've just fitted mine with DCC sound. It's so amazing!!
When I see the Q1 I always think of Neville from the Thomas and friends , and another great video IC82/will /;D
What a beast of a little train. Reminds me of a brute wrestler or football player of a train.
what?
They are the marmite of locos, loved or hated and I too love them and have a weathered version. Top loco and top model. Great video as usual! :)
Great video of the best loco ever built
When you did this it was the night of my birthday
Love the Q1s & Hornby do a great job with these. I am thinking of getting No.1 myself, she did run on the Bluebell Railway back in the late 90s
That's got a lot more power than I expected, nice model!
2:45 I put the pieces in the packet so they didn't come off during transport. They are supposed to be there.
Love it. Wish I could buy one here in Canada.
the engine is a BEAST!!!
i like your layout intercity82 its simple and big
thx intercity82 u helped me get me my first tender engine #Duke of Gloucester
#dukeofgloucster7100
Excellent review Will well done.
That loco might be my new faverorote locomotive
i do really like it will!! great loco, think i might even get myself one :D
And this cool design is why I prefer British Steam over American Steam.
I agree and their locos come in colors instead of grey(blue green black with red stripes)
Keri Ogilvie That too. I don't like the typical bland greys of my country's engines.
I hate those American steam trains, they are all UGLY
The western steam trains are the worst steam trains ever to be made on this planet, the big funnel, that dumbass bell (why would you need a bell when you have a wistle?), the colours (urge!), that stupid cow catcher (any more forward and the train would be pushing building off) and a lot more
Well, the reason for the bell is that some crossings don't allow Whistles/Horns to be blown because of a residential area or such. Everything else I agree with.
Lawrence White but in England, they can blow the wistle anytime they want without being told off
love it for the interesting design
Everyone. These wheels are Bulleid Firth Brown wheels, not boxpok. BFB are made in a single cast whereas Boxpok is sections joined together.
Is Neville from Thomas &Friends a Q1 loco, because he sorta looks like one. could someone please tell me. =)
Yes he is
oh, thanks bud.
I believe that the "A" denotes brake power used on unfitted (non-vacuum braked) goods trains.
when i went the the railway museum in york i saw the Q1 on the turntable
Very good review. Not the most attractive loco but Hornby seemed to have made a very good model. It certainly performed well and I was wondering how many more wagons it could have pulled.
this one made the Flying Scotsman you reviewed back to it's box
The wheels are of a boxpok, or Bulleid Firth Brown design. The idea was that they carry the tyres on them better, they are also less prone to shrinking, 10% lighter than ordinary spoked & they are balanced better meaning they can minimise the hammer-blow effect on track
Lots of heavy and fast passenger locomotives here in the US used them.
ResidentEvil742 yep
One of a kind. almost iconic loco,,,, good review ,,,,
***** china made....what a shame////
+korkis Arxidis everything is these days! where all to used to it. I agree! (but we are getting a slightly better product )
It's Nevil!
your right!!
that's right
love it so much sounds like it could do with a little oil there is a bit of a squeek
21:20 Wheels to the rails, Nevill!
I'm going to York this summer.
Yes, those black pannels do go on the tender like the way you showed.
Yes they do I just didn't want to damage them when they came off a day or two before I sent it to Will. I kept them off because I didn't want to damage them further if they were in the first place.
beautiful train
Brilliant, I was hoping the megaboxes would make an appearance :)
A good little loco. The 5FA means its at the top end of the 5F power class. Not a 6F but almost there!
Steam in the North West A means lower
I saw a Q1 at Peterborough once!
Staltwitch junction I saw it at York
I love this locomotive 😍
Can we see a further test of it's hauling capabilities soon? I'd like to know just how strong this locomotive is.
You are right she is a beast
Love the review. Keep then coming.
Just put a bid in for one of these on eBay. Been thinking about getting one for a while ...... Looks like you made the prices go up lol!
i think it could carry 2 more megaboxes
It would be amazing if you would do a review of the Duchess of Sutherland in red as this was the first set I ever had way back in 1977 when I was a boy and as soon as funds allow I'll be purchasing the 'Royal Train' pack.......
I saw one of these at the national railway museum
i was waiting for you to do a video on this.
GREAT VIDEO
I LOVE IT
I love this type of train!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great designer O.V.Bulleid. You may be interested in some of the names the drivers gave them.…Biscuit Tins. Biscuit Barrels. Charlies. Clockworks. Coffee Pots. Frankensteins. Ugly Duckings.
is it the same loco that smells of burning oil?
i love this train
The Basis of The Thomas And Friends character,.. Neville
I love your voice
I love it, I have three of them
I think we found the real winner of "The Battle of the Shunters". 😏
Its not a shunter though
yea
also this has been the 5th time a American has called are goods engines shunting trains
Battle of the tenders
Love the Q1, its a shame only Dapol makes them from N gauge (my gauge) which is well over priced!
Those little cover buts were small sliding covers
Quick Wikipedia copypaste: "In the 1950s the suffixes 'FA' and 'FB' were used to distinguish between freight locos at the lower and higher ends of the power range."
So "5FA" means it's towards the lower end of the 5 power band.
Even so, that's impressive for an 0-6-0.
Poopingbotham *"5weet F*uck All!"
Poopingbotham bad languge
This classification was unique to the Southern region during the 1950s FA was I believe the higher rating over FB
I see you've bought one of Bulleid's 0-6-0s! Otherwise known as a Biscuit Tin or a Charlie.
anyway I love this locomotive it looks like Neville and Neville is one of my favourite engines
tommoss-the-prank-engine
the A stands for allsteryety
Jolanda Tange no it’s used to distinguish between the Lower band and upper bound of the power rating
A being lower
B being higher
So 5A means low 5
The A means Austerity
So the full power class is 5 Freight Austerity
LNER4422 Productions no it’s used to distinguish between the Lower band and upper bound of the power rating
A being lower
B being higher
So 5A means low 5
What about 33010 Neville Who works on sodor???
+Mike07 Evans He was just a one-off character like Hank, Sam, and Logan. No one cares about those, though.
I care about sam, logan but not hank because he is an amarican loco. I do not like amarican locos.
Sam and Logan are American, too.
Bulleid loco with Bopox wheels. Some of our Aus locos had Bopox wheels as it increased operating capacity
+Peter Irving its spelt Boxpuk
+Mrps T334 Ah ok sorry my bad. I always thought it was Bopox, so thanks for that.
Boxpox. But they are american. These wheels are
Bulleid firth brown wheels.
Ignore me. It is boxpok. My mistake.
Boxpok, pronounced 'box spoke'. half the people I know here in the US pronounce it as 'box pock'. Those are spokes, not pocks.
Australian loco's please.
I have that locomotive it's a good loco for
It's really good locomotive
I've got a pannier tank but it's packed because were moving house.
I love the q1's. Could you maybe get a model of the hogwarts express or its original version Olton hall
more info en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR_Q1_class
yep it was Oliver Bullied
would this model be tender drive, or is the tender a secondary unit to help it with freight?
I might be wrong, but I think the A stands for Austerity.
this engine reminds me of Neville from the episode of Thomas and friends called Thomas and the new engine
Well, Neville is a Q1, so your not wrong there.
hey InterCity82 What editing program do you use?
Will you should do more US locomotives if you get a chance If i could I would send you my Norfolk Southern Dash 8-40B with DCC and sound but my parents won't let me
hi intercity82 i was woundering if u do repairs cos i got a hogwarts express what not work i was woundering if i can send it to you to take a look at it
If so I have a rare Manchester united by Hornby but it makes noises and the wheels lock up can you help ?
OK thanks !
I think you should get the gwr 14xx
good job now open the Q2
How strong is the Q1
Amazing how ten years ago when the Chinese were paid slave wages the model train manufacturers added so much detail to the models. Notice that today with the huge Chinese labor wages increases, the model train manufacturers are retooling for more molded detail with far less hand applied details. How times have changed.
SeaToby11
The A was availablity I think?
The A stands for Austerity
Trainspotter Of Zoetermeer no it’s used to distinguish between the Lower band and upper bound of the power rating
A being lower
B being higher
So 5A means low 5
I'm now building a new layout so would you recommend this loco🚂🚃🚃
Funny things Q1s :) What's the drive gear on the front for in real life?
or Ugly things as so nicknamed, the gear on the left hand side drives the lubricator on the left side, which C1 also has.
Yes the parts ar for the tender
Dominik Suste yes it is
Oliver Bulleid was born in New Zealand
Trainspotter Of Zoetermeer I live in New Zealand!
Are those real stones in the wagons?
Can you please do some more thomas stuff!
Will you do more Thomas the tank engine reviews?
ITS NEVIL!!!!!
Looks like nevel from Thomas
