- In today's video we look at 2 of MKLeo's sets from Rise N' Grind 2023, a major Smash Ultimate tournament in Waco, Texas. At this tournament MKLeo loses to Skinny the Pooh, a local Mario player and Riddles placing him at 17th which is the lowest placement he's gotten in over 4 years.

20:39 is actually insane
Also.. hella of a player if your worst placement in 4 years is 17th…
didn't he get 33rd at a Japanese tourney?
@@JJ-xe6wd You're not very good at paying attention are you?
@@JJ-xe6wdLooks like someone failed at learning how to count in school...
@@JJ-xe6wd yeah that was his previous worst 4 years ago
@@2inverse469 you aren't any better though. didn't bother giving the answer.
No matter where Leo ends up on the pgr for the rest of smashes lifespan, he will always be the best to me, or at the very least most impactful player ever. He inspired a whole generation of players to surpass him. Truly a remarkable player.
He was*
Acola probably ends up winning more majors than Leo by the end of this game's lifespan, so it's gonna be hard to call him the best. But most impactful most iconic even is very fair
@@Amaling Acola still needs to win about 10 majors to beat Mkleo's amount of major wins.
@@legrandliseurtri7495what's gonna stop him? Counterplay is barely available for his character (then he can learn to counter your counterplay), Nintendo abandoned the game, and the scene is dying. We will be lucky to get any more fresh blood into the game at this point. The people that are the best now will either be the best forever in ultimate, or at least a very long time until people figure stuff out.
@@Lancer1369That mindset about the game dying and new players not getting as good is what we have thought and keep thinking, then we have players like Miya come up out of nowhere and eventually beat the best Steve player (and considered the best in the world) along with a lot of the best players in the world
From what I have heard, Leo hasn’t been practicing as much due to having other things going on in his life that take priority. Kind of a shame that he hasn’t really been able to keep up as much with everyone else, but I respect that he’s putting time into his life outside of Smash where he needs to
💀💀 this is cap
No this isn't Cap... this is Fact...this is life...and that's ok
@@lionelwashington8419 just admit Leo fell off bro lol
@@Shaheemswaggedouthe's explaining why he fell of
Leo has been playing a lot lately actually, lots of locals even
Interesting Mario has been something of a bracket demon for Leo recently. It’s also a ridiculous stat (‘fun fact’ even) that Leo’s lowest placement in 4 years is 17th. Absolutely crazy
Honestly Texas region is underrated and under explored.. I think players from out of region/country should boot camp more in Texas and hit the major weeklies in each region within Texas (like 5 main areas all with talent and hidden bosses)
Lowkey seeing Leo go through his first ever slump and struggling to get out of it for months now makes me more impressed by how Tweek literally goes through this ever year and somehow always bounces back to being a top 5 player
Leos gotta ask Tweek for tips, if anyone can help Leo with this its him - they are teammates after all
I think Leo doesn't care as much as he used to. He's occupied with other things, I heard he helps run his brother's business in Mexico. He's eating good rn in terms of other aspects of his life, I think he'll have to be "starving" in order to be as motivated as he used to be pre-GOAT status
They should be practicing together 🙃
@@gerardoortega323 word. Plenty of smash streamers also mention the same thing about Leo. Once you've reached the top for a long time, will eventually just lose that motivation compared to what you had at the beginning.
TWEEK went from VERSION 3 then slump and then back up to VERSION 5 rn. It’s amazing to see
tweek hates ultimate though, and he dq in rise and grind I'm willing to bet it might've been for that reason.
Leo has made over 1 Million dollars in Pesos, he has businesses in Mexico and a GF now. He was #1 for a long time, he has hit his Zero phase. He cares but not really, as you get older you mature and once you have hit the top of the mountain you lose drive. He is in the honeymoon phase. Still getting paid to play smash was never the goal for him but it is the reality , so he is just enjoying it.
20:35 lol Larry I don't know if you saw my comment pointing that out on the video of the set, but yeah that would have hit if Marth's range wasn't so deceptively short (Smash 4 Marth would have hit). I also went in training mode to test it and it would have easily killed at those percents.
Not only that but just before at 20:30, the Down-Air spike into tipper Up-Air would have killed had Terry been literally ONE percent higher; I also tested it in training mode after rewatching the set.
It’s really hard to see Leo struggle like this
But hey, he’s the goat
He’ll be back (right?)
🙅♂️
Love Leo, been following him since Sm4sh. But I think this is it.
@@jhosright_Motscoud then he'll win the next big tournament and then you'll look stupid because this happens literally every single time with Leo. The only reason this happened regardless is that Leo has a life outside of smash now. Girlfriend, family and just isn't caring as much anymore. If he put all the effort in for months he could be uncontested #1 again he's even proven that, but he just doesn't need to for any reason and with his life outside of Smash what's the point?
@@coldtea7lmfaoo hes literally been grinding offline smash and attending locals/ regionals consistently 😂 you do know hes attending port priority? Which is literally going to be his what 3rd major in over a few months.. but yeah lets ignore that and say hes just not into smash as much 💀
@@coldtea7also doesn't tweek have a girlfriend? Hes still performing at a very high level...
I feel like Mario is Leo's kryptonite tbh. Wasn't there recently a tournament where he lost to a mario as well? I think the player was superdog
And then he proceeded to clap superdog in the runback invitational with Marth. I'm perplexed that he didn't try to use Marth against Skinny, I love his Joker as much as the next guy but his Joker always gets ragdolled by Marios
@@gerardoortega323 true I feel like he's got quite a roster built up over the years, but maybe he wants to learn certain matchups better? Like for example I know at delfino maza he kept sticking to pythra vs skyjay while going joker every game may have been a better choice
I think he's just playing way too many characters, making them not as polished as they used to and those cracks really show
Frostbite 2019 he got smoked by Prodigy whos now named Kurama
Watching this live at the watchparty was so crazy. Unlucky that Leo had to run into Riddles as he as been beating him the past couple of times
Mkleo should've won that terry hurtbox swifted and he missed
19:29 Tipper dancing blade is also disgustingly tiny, landing it depends so much on hurtbox shifting :d
what is hurtbox shifting?
@@axelsjourney the way your opponent's animation moves their hurtboxes, where they are allowed to get hit. During dancing blade they don't stay still, they go in their getting hit -animation which is slightly different for everyone and in this case, Terry's toes overlap ever so slightly with dancing blade's sour spot.
Mkleo allegedly doesn't enjoy Long John Silvers. Coincidence? I think not...
“Coincidence? I THINK NOT!!” Man, I love that movie 😂
Mario is a really obnoxious character to play against
Leo played well, he just didn't execute well enough against Skinny. He dominated neutral and missed his edgeguards/kill opportunities. Meanwhile skinny just did his thing well and got it.
Note that Leo 3-0d EVERYONE he fought after before he got to Riddles. Could've been a different tournament.
Skinnythepooh also plays completely standard controls. No tilt stick or anything. Kid is a beast.
Sick of people saying Leo doesn't care, he does, he's just never been in this position before where he's vulnerable. It's hard to climb back up.
Also I've noticed that Leo's combo di against Mario kinda sucks even when he got upset by Kurama at Frostbite 2019 lol. It's the only reason he keeps dying so early. He's still pretty decent versus Mario and his characters don't lose. Skinny just capitalized on his opportunities.
17th is not the end of the world, he can bounce back.
He hasn't been practicing much so, it's true that he doesn't care as much as before?
@@Trattt I feel like he has though? He's practiced with Big Boss and entered his more local tournaments to stay warm, I think he's in pretty good form. But he needs confidence I'd say.
Sick of people saying Leo doesn’t care OR that he does. How would you know? You don’t… all I gotta say.
It's just my opinion. If he didn't care I don't see why he would keep doing practice streams or attend so often. Or make the type of tweets he does after tournament losses. At the very least, he doesn't enjoy losing.
Word lol.
I remember like a year ago the excuse of Leo's stans was that he got a girlfriend and now is that he just doesnt care lmao
Even Jordan had a flop season
Leo simply should have played Marth. He went Marth against good Marios like Superdog and absolutely destroyed them. No idea why he didn't go Marth here.
Thankfully he said he'll never play Joker against Mario again, so the Marth might be guaranteed to come out next time.
Must suck not having the luxury of losing at a video game like every other human being
why is it always mario lol
Takes about 5 days of no play to see rusty habits already from anyone who plays this game.
You lose a lot of your “aim” in this game. Tracking on to your opponent so that you remember the range on your important kill moves and spacing your hitboxes is very important. Especially if you play multiple characters like Leo.
He had the right idea but all of those missed confirms were crazy and extremely uncharacteristic of Leo. He is own worst enemy.
His own worst enemy in the sense that he hasn't been playing as much. His own best friend in the case where that's a good thing. Having a life and doing things besides playing one game for the rest of your life is a win for him.
He just doesn't care anymore. Already proved he can be the undisputed best, just doesn't care about maintaining the crown once obtained. It happens.
Also other players have gotten better
Wish an upset on Leo meant as much today as it did in the past. I miss prime Leo. Glad he's finding happiness outside of smash though.
Upsetting Leo isn’t not even a important thing now 😂
#1 You can’t use a double negative in a sentence
#2 Besides his 17th here and his 33rd at the Japanese tournament, Leo (to my knowledge) pretty much never places outside of top 12 and he pretty much only loses to top 50 players or players that have the caliber to be top 50. Is it as good as a Sparg0, Gluttony, Miya, or Acola win? No, but it’s still really freaking good
Leo will always be my goat of Ult, but its clear that it's really hard to keep up in a metagame past a certain age due to lowering reaction times. you can see this in a lot of og smashers that transition to content creation as a result
Larry u should do a video pushing the marth agenda, this character is hella slept on
yall so sad using Mk Leos name in your title for views, let this man live, post videos about yourself bro, jeeez
Kinda upset he didn’t at least try Aegis (since he beat Ludo, Dark Wizzy and Kurama in a row with them) or Marth (since he beat Superdog, a Mario player that had beaten him a couple of weeks before his run back with him) but it is what it is. I mean, to be fair, his matches at Major Upset were by no means close and his Aegis and Marth probably weren’t warmed, but if you are down in a set against one of you’re biggest bracket demons, you should at least try it
I think what’s happening is that Leo is maturing, he’s been playing since he was young and was on top for so long so I’m sure he was playing every single day all those years and I think he’s just slowly getting tired of the game. I play as well and I get tired of it after like 2 hours, I can only imagine how pro players must feel lol
This. It's depressing playing one game nonstop. Anyone who stops is doing the right thing.
You know whats weird, is the game has actually slowed down. It went from hurt box to hurt box with fast paste movement, down to slow and methodical timed attacks. MK hasn't slowed down yet like everyone else.
You should see Miya's Game&Watch
Leo is not gonna win anymore. He isn't dedicating as much time to this game as he did. He constantly uses a lot of characters instead of sticking to 1 + counterpick, and the scene is dying. Ultimate is just not profitable for him as it was when it started.
The ones that are winning are the ones that dedicate 8+ hours every single day and using unbalanced characters. Imagine if Joker wasn't nerfed like 3 times? Then we remember Kazuya and Steve exist.
17:06 Terry be chargin the final flash
the outcome of this player matchup will always be sad, these two are my favorite players
Mkleo should have played corrin or Marth, problem solved .
Edit - on Mario that is, but I heard corrin is good vs Kazuya
Edit edit - apparently so is Marth
SkinnythePooh capitalized quite nicely but players REALLY need to stop taking Mario to PS2. They're asking to die from ladder combos since it's so easy for Mario to extend them on that stage.
mickeyleo*
That's what happens when you start having a Girlfriend!
he always gets upset by marios. always.
Leo makes marth seem good. Thats a win for me.
wait, mario's recovery can go straight up?
Yes
Yeah I always thought it had to be a little diagonal
Curious how most times that MkLeo got bodied was agaisn't a Mario main bro doesn't practiced the match up enough🤣
Skinny is cracked
MKleo is still the best to me i don't count carried Steve players though lol
Peanut placed higher ✨
I’ve noticed Leo struggles with joker and Mario match ups. Remember leo vs kuramas Mario
Larry mentioned kazuya not being as scary with rage because downthrow can be di'ed away. My counter point is that kazuyas havent found the optimal rage combos yet and its only a matter of time before someone figures out that with more rage and knockback theyll find different combo routes, albeit possiblly only 2-3 hits.
4:09 he can’t afford to be missing those
BOBC5. He got 13th losing to Zomba this year. This is his new worst placement lol.
someone needs to teach Leo how to DI mario combos
It’s a video game bro leave him alone 💀
Pretty sure leo lost in pools in smash4 against Zaki the japanese dedede. Some 2gg event i forgot which. But im pretty sure he hasnt been upset in pools in smash ultimate
I don't think byleth held mkleo back from winning but marth def did with his bs inconsistent tippers. I know he likes marth a lot but going marth in his last game to determine 17th was a really stupid decision imo
He just doesn’t care nearly as much and I don’t blame him
all i've learned from this is that marth sucks and his tipper range is a lie
Larry analysis always interesting to hear
Nah I hate Mario so much
thats the result of time wasted playing shity characters for 3 years when he should have been sticked to Joker to improve even more that brutal gameplay he showed of on 2018-2019 years.
when MKLeo's in a Smash Ultimate competition and his opponent is Super Mario Bros
lavado
EGOOOO
We're just gonna have to deal with this new Era of smash that Leo can have a hard time keeping up with. People have improved so much as far as punish game and neutral, Leo can keep up with it but it is harder.
It's not a matter if Leo can keep up or not. Leo is not even dedicating himself to this game near as much as before. This isn't even a secret . People asume every other player adapted except Leo. That is not how it works.
the kill at 3:20 is true i don’t think leo could have done anything
Larry if you need video ideas or anything, could you make a more modern falco guide? I love your old one but I feel there’s a lot of new stuff that could be added that I feel I don’t understand
There is one, search the art of Falco by Izaw
That’s not slingshotting btw
Leo Riddles sets are so hype 🔥
Love ya Larry!
Byleth
Even a god can bleed
skinny the pooh is godlike bro
Crazy that Leo worst year would be 99% people's best year😭 and people are still catching up to his 1-3rd placements.. which is crazy
Spargo still finished in the 40's this year at an event and Leo lowest is in the 30's which is insane.. everyone is still playing catch up that just proves his greatness in the ultimate lifespan.. check the numbers everyone still have a long way to go to catch up literally
Come on Larry, this clickbait title ain't it. The video is a good analysis and I get that clickbait gets the clicks but I think it's a bit rude
Joker taking stocks with Arsen in 2019 at 60% using a smash attack while the opponent is still on the platform: “he is so pro!”
Mario taking stocks at 80% with a 5 hits consecutive combo while taking joker to the edge of the screen: “how? He shouldn’t be taking that stock! Mario is broken!”
lol
Nobody has said this.
Oh, and 80% is after the hit. They generally start at 30/40%. Pretty obvious disingenuous anology.
@@lokks2130 isn’t the comment in this video? Minute 3 something
@@sergiooliva2517 Yes, but what you said can't even be called paraphrasing. Larry said Leo shouldn't have died there as a result of Leo making mistakes DI wise.
@@lokks2130 it can be, “Leo shouldn’t have died” based on what exactly? Less damage? Being closer to the edge?, did Larry ever mention 2019 DI on smash attacks by Arsen? We all know joker was nerfed on 2021, and the fact that, that wasn’t called “the other player shouldn’t have died” when we all saw those DIs, is just saying the opposite.
Leo’s biggest and most consistent problem is simply picking the wrong character.
Everyone knows Mario/Byleth simply beat Mario. He should’ve just gone Marth Vs Riddles from the jump.
Before it was his insistence on picking Aegis, but now it seems he’s not willing to counterpick for some reason
He went Byleth against Superdog and lost, so that's probably why he didn't do it
Mario/Byleth is even, just because Byleth is a sword doesn't mean he wins. Mario has insane aerial drift, smothers Byleth from close and combos him hard. Byleth has to play a tight executional game for the range difference to matter.
Is somewhat complicated, cuz at the end of the day is about taking stocks and base Joker is inconsistent depending on arsene all the time is not a option in competitive scene, and i think nerfs has affected lot of characters were pretty good in the first season
Honestly its the girlfriend debuff at this point
It's not a debuff. It might feel that way, but I see him being worse because of it as a badge of honor. "Hey, I've got more in my life now than fighting Nintendo characters"
@@Lancer1369 that's quite literally a debuff. Don't get me wrong, I'm married, but I used to play overwatch competitively back in 2019. After getting together with my then girlfriend, I stopped playing for months. I didn't have time to grind an aim trainer and learn character situation matchups. It's not a bad thing at all. If anything it's good for Leo because competitive gaming is probably the least healthy thing a human can do for a living.
@@dudeekill4win True. Debuff in Smash but buff in real life.
@@Lancer1369 I have to add though, This "Badge of honor" ultimately has a negative impact on his real life too.
It's not like he's winning tournaments just for the fun of it and nothing else. You can't just separate his "Smash life" and his "Real life" and brand one as the one for losers and the other for Chads. They're both connected.
I don't know how much he earns by winning tournaments, but I'd imagine this slump will have a negative impact on him Financially.
I suppose he still has the Luminosity sponsorship. Though I'm not sure how much it helps him financially.
@@KaizerHuterits a good thing. It will force him to get real life skills. The negative impact will lead to him needing to make better life decisions.
