  • Welcome to the Comfee Mug! Every anime character has outlines, but did you know that certain materials and objects in anime also use outlines to enhance their stylized look? Using this anime outline tutorial you will learn when and how to apply the three easiest and most effective ways to add anime outlines to any of your objects: the fresnel approach, the inverted hull method, and the line art collection technique using Grease Pencil. I really hope you find this tutorial helpful for your projects! Thank you for watching, and have a Comfee day!

    Thank you guys for checking this tutorial out 😄One note to clarify about the Line Art Collection modifier; the line art will always follow the angle and view of the camera in your scene. So if you want to see the line art on an object from a different angle, just move to that angle in your viewport and press "shift + alt + number pad 0" to snap your camera to view for the line art to change to that camera angle 👍

    I love the grease pencil method best. =D Have been using that for a couple months and as I only render still images from my scenes to use in a comic, I add a Scene lineart, fiddle around with the settings in the modifier tab, then apply and then add another modifier for line thickness to use the curves to give the lines a little bit of line weight change here and there.
    Sure, that means I have to redo this every time I move the camera, but it looks good. =)

    Was hoping to have a finished model for a personal project by now, but kinda got waylaid. Lots of alligators getting in the way of draining the proverbial swamp, let's say. But what is there right now only needs outlines, and after trying inverted hull I've decided that it just does not work for the type of characters I'm aiming for. So I'll be trying the Grease Pencil approach soon, seen a few videos on it, but yours takes a different angle to it than what I've seen so far. Or it's the same, just with different buttons. Either way, the overview of techniques and their recommended application is appreciated.

    Great video! Could you make one on getting anime shadows? The worst part of 3D anime is when the shadows look like they're on a 3D character. There's now methods using Geometry nodes to get custom normals that are calculated by the geometry nodes so the shadows have a 2D feel and can be customized so things like the neck gets more shadows and the face gets less shadows

    • @ComfeeMug

    Thank you so much Christian, for this tutorial. Thr problem I have faced with line arts in my scene is, when I have an object like rocks and I place then on grass, the line art comes on top of the grass. I want the lineart to be below the grass, for the part of thr rock that is actually below the grass. But I cant figure out how.

    • @ComfeeMug
      @ComfeeMug  Месяц назад +1

      @ojas339 Thank you for your support, it means so much to me 😄 You raise a really good point; I'm assuming you're using a hair particle system to generate your grass, which would make sense if you are since the line art modifier only registers objects unfortunately (as far as I'm aware), and not particle systems. I'd suggest using the second method I shared (the inverted hull method) for your rocks or any other specific objects that will be amongst the grass, and just make it blend well with the overall line art in your scene. You may need to separate the objects amongst the grass by placing them in a different collection so that the line art doesn't continue to effect those objects.
      But, if that doesn't work, my second recommendation would be to make a couple quick grass blades a models, and use geometry nodes to do the same thing a particle system would. But this way, your grass will be registered as objects. You may need to tweak the settings of your line art modifier to make it work well with this method, mainly by turning off intersections in the line art modifier, but it should get you a much better result.
      I hope this helps, and thank you again for supporting me and my channel 😋

      @@ComfeeMug Not a problem! I've been digging into geonodes for the last few months and yeah, they're incredibly powerful. One little change to that tutorial makes it even more flexible-using the Active Camera node instead of an Object Info node to specify the camera. I think that was added in 4.1, which may have been shortly after that tutorial was published. But basically, it means you won't have to specify a camera for the line art to be aligned to. However, in a viewport that's not using a camera, it'll still look like the grease pencil line-art-basically scribbley lines all over the geometry😆

    Hello! I had a question!
    With the GP Line Art Technique, is there a way to hide the line art on certain parts of an object?
    I have a model that uses a blush object over the face, and when the GP Line Art is used, that transparent blush object has an outline over the face.

    • @ComfeeMug
      @ComfeeMug  Месяц назад +1

      @MysticalCyan This is a great question! And the answer is pretty simple. All you'll need to do to make it so that the blush object isn't affected by the GP Line Art is to make a new collection for your character inside the already existing one, place all the objects you want the line art to affect inside that collection, and all the objects (like the blush object) that you don't want to be affected outside of that new collection. Then just assign the GP Line Art Modifier to the correct collection and you should only have that collection's objects affected 😄
      It should look something like this:
      Character Collection > Sub Collection for GP (inside Character Collection)
      I hope this helps!

      @ojas339 Sure, haha. I have the anime sky/hdri background tutorial scheduled to be the third tutorial after my newest one that is coming out tomorrow. So I believe the anime sky tutorial should be out in about a month 😁

      @rajnagar3686 It's in the description of this and any of my previous videos 😄 Sorry, I would link it in this comment too, but I'm away from my device that has proper discord access, and none of my discord links from this device have worked in the past 😅 Excited to talk with you more over there, though!

I do have an editor who is helping me with these videos, but I'd love to talk more with you about this over on discord if you would like to chat 😁Maybe send me a direct message and we can talk more about this. And thank you again, that is extremely generous of you to offer your time and talents to help me and my channel, let alone offering for free 😌

    0:50 Why blur them out like this? Just to point out, you are actively choosing to do extra work to make the presentation less informative by omitting the comparison.

      @dreadwinter You made some really great points, I really appreciate your feedback. Me and my editor are constantly trying to figure out the best way and timing to showcase things, so your feedback is super helpful for us. I will take your feedback, and I hope my editor and I can consistently improve these videos with each new release 😊
