I have two problems with the whisky dinner question: talking vs eating and being star-struck. I did have dinner with a couple of fellow barflies the other night and they finished their food while I was just blethering! As for the second problem: when I met Serge Valentin I was so tongue-tied I could barely put a sentence together! I've fared much better (several times) with Charlie MacLean...
I think I would choose historic figures, rather than live ones, knowing it would only ever be hypothetical, so how about Tommy Dewar, Bessie Williamson and George Urquhart?

For the non-Americans watching this video, Phil named two quintessential bourbons. If you try Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and Wild Turkey Rare Breed and don’t like either of them, then you probably just don’t like bourbon.

I love the Elijah Craig and am partial to most Wild Turkeys, but think the rare breed is over rated and only popular due to its particularly high voltage.
Bourbon is great for some occasions and Scotch for others.

I'm in Hong Kong (American) and I have that exact Elijah Craig A120 bottle. Seems like that batch made it over into the Asia-Pac market, and it's amazing. When I was a boy, I grew up farming and summers were spent picking, shucking, eating, and canning sweet corn and that bottle has an amazing corn-silk taste on the back end that reminds me of those summers.

So the only whisky I haven't liked so far is Talisker 10, it has a really sharp arrival (maybe that's the "briny" note). Now, I'll come back to it later and I may end up liking it once I get to know it, but that is literally the only single malt I've tried that I haven't liked so far.

Thanks for answering my question! I think I was asking from a personal politics perspective, but I also agree with your answer. At the end of the day a good bottle is a good bottle, regardless. Lagavulin, for an obvious answer, is a great, corporate owned brand. But then you get a bottle of, say, Kilchoman, and you know your dollar is going to help a family rather than a shareholder. It was this angle I was leaning towards with my query. I have both distilleries on my shelf, so I'm not one to get all high and mighty about it.

Unpopular opinion but I cant get on the Glenallachie train like so many have. I especially find the 12yo overly sweet which distracts from anything else that could be of interest. As far as underrated right now I'm enjoying the Glen Garioch 12. Its got that dirty character that I also find in Craigallachie which I enjoy. Also the brilliance of Hazelburn often gets overlooked by its more lusted housemates Springbank and Longrow.

I think in regards to whiskies such as Blantons, when they become harder to find the product becomes more desirable. Plus I know that with Blanton's some people collect the product for the caps themselves because the horse on top is different from bottle to bottle, and each bottle cap will have a different letter on it.

I don't have anyone who enjoys whisky like I do... they don't nose it, they don't try to figure out the tastes... when I pour one of my whisky bottles that I bought with my hard earned money, I wanna make the whisky front and center. I realized I won't be getting this sharing it with my buddies... they just wanna get drunk. So I mostly drink alone and I love it. (it was one of the lessons I learned in my journey... single malt is not a social drink, it won't replace having a beer with friends... it's a different experience. That is unless you're rich enough that you don't mind going over a $200 bottle without paying much attention to it).

I spent a couple of years looking for a decent replacement for HP Einar, having numerous correspondents directing me to the nonexistent Springbank. I finally found my goal in Benromach 15. kinda surprised by the Paul John, havent had the brilliance, but the edited, and at first it was meh, kinda forgot about it and 6 months later, i did a mini blind tasting at home, and the edited was very good. Its a bottle i kinda forget but everytime im happy to sip it, it got some orangy signature but with a weird non scotch grasy note. It really needed time, and maybe the hint of peat in it elevates it and counters the sweetness.

As I'm sure you know, Compass Box makes BLENDED SCOTCH, but highlighting their BLENDED MALT and grouping it together with BLENDED SCOTCH is confusing and misleading.
BLENDED MALT is 100% Malt Whisky, is a completely separate and distinct category of its own, and as Compass Box regularly demonstrates, is in no way inferior to SINGLE MALT; in fact, the category has the potential to be superior to SINGLE MALT because of the flexibility it affords the Master Blender.
I don't see eye-to-eye with you on some of the whiskies you "hate", but I appreciate your opinions & well-made vids ✌️

Well at least you got to try a good batch of ECBP. In my state that is pretty much the best stuff we can find relatively easily but still only seasonally and thrice a year. A fairly high percentage of bottles that appear on a lot of bourbon channels are mostly difficult to get or absurdly over priced even in most of the states because its in demand and the companies keep customers blueballed for certain “special” items… none of which are really any better than ECBP in my and most bourbon boyz opinions. I’ve had some amazing experiences with select random batches of fairly common bottles that kill the hyped stuff I’ve tried. The best stuff I’ve had isn’t so “sweet” as much as it is complex fruits and brown sugar antique wood resins in a balanced way where its not high in caramel/vanilla flavors. Think either red or green apples or peaches as the base flavors with random semi tannic antique mixed wood / country cooking flavors as secondary evolving flavors. I do enjoy the sweeter more basic floral stuff too though personally. Favorite bottle of scotch remains dimple pinch 15 and I realize its in poor taste to most and just a blend but i adore it. I thought Laphroigh 10 was beautiful but I would never want to regular swig a heavily peated item like that, too warming for my blood.

@@FirstPhilWhisky yeah we have government controlled sales stores in my state for hard liquor and I’m not far from kentucky yet we still have to drive around to random stores at random times in hopes of finding seasonal release bottles like elijah barrel proof because everyone wants it and you cant special order or reserve it. Buffalo trace in particular sends a big portion of their best stuff overseas in marketing ploys. Bourbon is an infuriating game over here.

How does Independent bottling whiskies work? What is their process? I was in Scotland recently (from the US) and the shops I went too were talking them up and pushing them hard. Are they worth it or is it better to get the whiskey they bottled straight from the source?

    • @cascode1192
      @cascode1192 Год назад

Distilleries (or their owning companies, actually) bottle their whisky at specific ages and the goal is partly to have consistently between batches. Independent bottlers buy casks of whisky, or whisky to be filled into their own casks, which they bottle when they feel it is ready. The batches are mostly one-offs so consistency is not an issue. They may also add a finish that is unique and they frequently bottle at cask strength, un-chillfiltered and uncoloured. Most distillery owners have sales brokers who sell to the independents and they provide regular lists of what is available. In some cases, Gordon & Macphail for example, an independent bottler will have a standing contract with a distillery to buy a certain amount of whisky each year. They are definitely worth it but not necessarily for a beginner - I’d try standard distillery bottlings first and when you find a distillery you like then try some independent bottlings of their whisky as well. Also, a lot of the IBs, Douglas Laing and Compass Box for example, produce some excellent blended malts that are worth exploring.

My whisk(e)y personalities would be John Campbell formerly from Laphroaig. Booker Noe, and not in the whiskey industry but he loved whiskey, "too much of anything is bad but too much good whiskey is barely enough" & "the more people I meet, the more I like my dog". Mr. Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain
Or Anthony Bourdain, but mostly because his approach to food, drink, and people is something I admire.

Couldn't agree more about Macallan. Yes, they're justifiably well-known but - much like Louis Roederer Cristal champagne or Cloudy Bay wines - you're paying for the name as much as the quality. And when a standard 18 year old Macallan costs almost _three times_ as much as many other 18 year old single malts, thats a lot of name to be paying for.

I never thought about population size as a reason why bourbon isn’t exported as much as Scotch, but it makes total sense. Scotland produces a tremendous amount of whisky. I know the Brits can handle their alcohol with the best of them, but not even they can drink that much whisky. Whereas in America, there are 335 million of us. We don’t all drink whiskey, obviously, but millions of us do.

@@FirstPhilWhisky I’m sure you know this but your audience probably doesn’t. Until the 2000’s, America didn’t have many actual distilleries. We still had laws on the books from after Prohibition which made it practically impossible to open a new distillery. I live near Philadelphia, one of America’s largest cities. It didn’t have even one distillery until 2010. Point being, America, for its size, doesn’t produce much whiskey. Only in the last decade are we starting to barrel a lot of whiskey. So I suspect you’ll be seeing more American whiskey, including bourbon, in the next ten years but right now our distilleries can hardly keep up with domestic demand. Love the channel, by the way. Cheers from Pennsylvania.

I think buying bottles is a terrible way to taste whisky. Best is probably tastings. Free tastings at a bottle shop, or even paid tastings in your area. Following that would be whisky bars that do smaller tasting pours. And bottles dead last; the goal probably isn't to know a little bit about whisky a decade from now when you've tried a hundred bottles or so. And with all of those bring a friend and share your drinks; a 15ml tasting pour is more than you need and a 700ml bottle is way more than you need.
