I just picked up the 2013 Islay Barley -- great stuff and a solid list as always Geoff!. @@Gwhisky You're right, my additions are usually sherried :). But Independent bottlers sometimes offer non-standard versions. I currently have a Mortlach open that's been in a bourbon barrel. Powerful stuff, reminds me of "old skool" Ardbeg 10 without the peat.

If you want musty, dunnage warehouse and most definitely dirty, get your hands on an Edradour. Try a cask strength one, but if you can't get hold of that, then the 12YO Caledonia is everything you want from a real dirty sherried bomb. The standard 10 at 40% almost makes the grade but is perhaps a little too low on the ABV scale to really achieve that merit. Love the rest of you r list and as I have commented many times before on your channel, that Glen Scotia 8 is a real dirty little dram which I love and was close to being my whisky of the year last year. A solid list of characterful malts indeed. Haven't tasted Bruichladdich and Ben Nevis yet but the others are funky, no doubt about it:) Mortlach and Tomatin also have something dirty and funky in their profiles. Edradour, despite the hammering of very active casks is also pretty dirty malt. Cheers!

Yeah Edradour wpuld certainly for here. I tend to think of sherry first when I think of the brand, so I threw it on the "sherried" list, but it's undeniably a dirty whisky, too. Cheers, Chuck! 🥃
Dirty whisky for me are basically created when new makes go deep into the feints (aka tails), in other words when the lower cut point is significantly lower than usual. Hence Edradour should definitely be on your list, Geoff. Springbank is not overpriced, secondary market and greedy dealers drive prices up, when you buy at the distillery, price-performance ratios are clearly reasonable.
Nice list man! Indie Ardmore rarely lets me down. And Ben Nevis is dirty in all the right ways. In regards to that Laddie Rockside Farm release, there is still hope! I found a dusty one on a shelf in Alberta last year. Always hope it seems. I'll have to crack it soon! Cheers 🥃
The Ben Nevis 10yo Batch 1 cask strength at 62% is fantastic. I was inspired to buy 2 of these a few years before covid and my only regret is not getting more than 2 bottles.
Great list. Edradour and Glenturret would feature on my list, but I am sure you would list them as the dirty sherry matured/finished whiskies. Although Edradour has bourbon cask matured cask strength bottles, which are pretty awesome themselves. Also Loch Dhu black, not a good whisky, but definitely a dirty one. In fact, it is really dirty. Speaking of weird, dirty whiskies, I would name a lesser known Bruichladdich. The "Fishky". Single cask sherry and ex-herring cask finished. Yeah, I said ex-herring cask. I would not recommend this for the faint hearted and would never recommend buying this. But it is quite something to taste this bizarre whisky.
Liking the channel, really 2 the point, and , good choices for review, so-- here's the thing, I'm assuming you're talking about peaty, Smoky 🥃 whiskys, where in the world can Springbank 15 yr. Be found? I have a smidgen of 12 yr. Cask strength and I'd like to find a btl. Of 10 , Cheers 🥂 from ETn Smoky Mtns!
Springbank has become a unicorn whisky in the last couple of years. Supply can't meet demand, so it's sold out pretty much everywhere nowadays. If you do manage to find it at a fair price it's worth grabbing, though. Good luck! 🥃
I actually speak dirty to my scotch before I drink it. I call it things like slutty and dank. Then I threaten to publicly urinate in it. To finish it off, I keep my bottles of scotch in a special drawer with unwashed women’s thongs. It makes the scotch dirtier, but also with notes of maritime/coastal/clam. My wife doesn’t know about any of this.
@@Gwhisky Ben Nevis? Seriously? Not even close to Springbank. Neither is Craig, neither is LL. Glen Scotia, yes. Kilkerran, yes. They are similar. But they are made with the same Loch water. And they have some of the same employees even.
Great list! When I want a 'dirty whisky bitch slap' I always reach for that Ben Nevis Glencoe 8 blended CS from your list 😅. What an uncompromising bottle is that!
I love your reviews, the lists, basically all your videos, but what I just realised is that I am leaving those likes when you throw in a joke. 😅 BTW I was waiting for Ardnamurchan to show up on this list. I think it fits in the dirty profile.
Hah thanks, buddy. Yeah I try to keep things lighthearted. Love Ardnamurchan. For me, not quite as dirty as the stuff I included here, but I can see where you're coming from. Cheers! 🥃
Great list. Everything on here is amazing. Maybe my inner hipster is shining through, but I actually prefer Kilkerran over Springbank. I have both on the shelf but find myself reaching for the Kilkerran way more often. It has that fermented or rotten fruit note that’s just so beautiful. Also nice mention on the Ben Nevis. I know The Whisky Diary is also all about Ben Nevis.
Have an idea for the new list: "you only need 5 bottles your collection". But this list should cover different styles of whiskies. For example, only Bourbon matured, only sherry matured, mixed casks, lightly peated (dirty) and heavily peated. Just an idea..
Loch Lomond 12 is a good price. Non chill filtered. I was about to pull the trigger, but then realised it's most likely got e150 added. Not buying now.
I love ben nevis. Doesn't nikka own ben nevis? And im told "from the barrel" contains some ben nevis, but FTB is not "dirty" or any of that good 'challenging' stuff.. (I wouldn't say challenging, id say interesting. Drinking shouldn't be a challenge lol imho)
Yeah there's Ben Nevis in a lot of Japanese blends. Certainly some in FtB. But they tend to make their blends more accessible than standard Single Malts from the distillery. 🥃
Really love the Springbank 10, but definitely not a fan of Springbank 15. The farmy, “dirty” notes that make SB 10 so good just do not play well with that much sherry. I’m also not a huge Sherry guy anyways so take that with a grain of salt. SB15 is interesting though, just not something I would reach for. I tend to get like movie theater popcorn from it.
It's hard to articulate 'dirty whisky' but I think we kind of know what you mean. Here's the thing, Springbank are touted but I really think you should go back to that. I don't think they are any more. The 12 is but that's just because of the strength. The 10 is a very well balanced dram and not 'dirty' at all. I'll add that to all Campbelltown whisky. Talisker 10 is easily as dirty. Here's a dirty one and it's a complete stink bomb which I like - Croftengea. Complete farmyard/ cow pat nose and flavour. It's owned by Loch Lomond and used in their blends. The indi bottles always produce. WT
Yeah I agree the SB12 is dirtier than the 10. It's not particularly dirty, but it's got a farmy element that goes in that direction for me. While it's famous for being dirty, it doesn't compare to stuff like Ben Nevis, for example, which is off-the-charts dirty. Yeah I've had Croftengea. Not just owned by Loch Lomond... it's from the LL distillery. I think they've got roughly 8000 brands on the go at this point. Good stuff! 🥃
@@Gwhisky Talking of Ben Nevis, I've just opened an independent one I've been sitting on. It was bottled by the now defunct 'Exclusive Malts' range and is a 20 year cask strength (51.9%) refill sherry hogshead bottled in 2017. 242 bottles. Despite the very obvious sherry profile the distillery character is also present. The official 10 year cask strength (1st batch) was also a complete stunner. I don't think they're likely to repeat a bottling like that again.
I may be repeating myself, but... you get to the end of a long day, you take a sniff of your pits and you realise they stink, and a few minutes later you find yourself inexplicably drawn to take another sniff. That to me is the essence of a good, dirty whisky.
Nice list Geoff. It's so interesting that we all interpret "dirty" differently. For me it means sulfur, flinty, or a certain level (or quality) of peat that fights the rest of the whisky's profile. A bit rough or rugged in some odd ways I suppose which you mention also. Benromach 10 would be at the front of my list as it is flinty, sulfury and has a level of peat that fights the rest of the whisky IMO. Craigellachie 13 also sulfur and flint. Loch Lomond 12 and 18 also to some degree but mostly because of the industrial oil qualities, but Springbank 10 wouldn't be on my dirty list. Springbank 10 to me is more of a citrus bomb than a dirty whisky with very subtle and well integrated peat.
Flint and sulfur could definitely be added to the definition of dirty. I summed it up as anything that doesn't come off as polished or engineered, so while your descriptors fit that perfectly, I guess I just use the term to cast a wider net than you. Cheers! 🥃
I have two of your five: love Springbank and love Kilkerran. The other three are on my shopping list. Good review as always, Geoff! Slainte!

Springbank is not overpriced, secondary market and greedy dealers drive prices up, when you buy at the distillery, price-performance ratios are clearly reasonable.
Edradour is dirty for sure, but I opted to place it on another list. And I agree, the fault for the high prices is not on Springbank. Cheers Doc. 🥃
Edradour, IMHO, is an absolutely fantastic dirty whisky. How did it miss this list? I believe it to be only second to Ben Nevis.
Keep up the good works, Goeff
Kind words. Thanks Jack. 🥃
i dont understand kilkerran 12,but love loch lomond 12
Those Kilkerrans need to be open about 6 months to peak, and they're lovely when they do, but I'd agree with you for the most part
Octomore 13.3 is the GOAT in this category for me. All of the .3 series are like 5% more oily than the .1 and it's just bliss.
Cheers 🥃
Thanks Matt. Fingers crossed you can get that 2007. It's incredible stuff! Looks like you had (still having?) a hell of a trip! 🥃
I love "dirty " whisky. Good list mr.Geoff ))) Gaumarjos !
Don't we all? Hah. Cheers buddy! 🥃
@@Gwhisky yeah we all )))
The Ben Nevis 10yo Batch 1 cask strength at 62% is fantastic. I was inspired to buy 2 of these a few years before covid and my only regret is not getting more than 2 bottles.
videos such as this help demand rise and thus prices. I will still watch and hope to find
Hah some good picks. A couple of those brands will make appearances in later videos. Fishky? No thanks. 😂
Enjoyed the vid mate! slainté
Thanks Neil. Cheers! 🥃
Good luck! 🥃
Ah haha....your MOM. I appreciate the sarcastic punches, great channel brother. 😂
Great list!
Thanks!
I'm calling the police. 🥃

@@maritimeusyou made my day, friday evening actually. Sipping KK12 while watching this GR8 review and cant stop laughing. 😅👍🥂🙋🏻♂️
@@peatbull3426 lol, I’m glad you like. I took a creative writing class back in college. My old professor has never been the same since.
Why Loch Lomond 12 over the 18?
I think the 18 is a great buy for an 18 year old bolltle. Have never considered the 12
Not disagreeing just asking
The 18 is my favourite personally, but the 12 does capture the house style and it's incredibly cheap. 🥃
Ben Nevis is an interesting choice. I'll now look out for this one. The Benromach 15 is a lovely, farmy, funky dram.
Quite sherried, though. That's another list. 😉
The peated expressions from Glenturret are often very dirty too!
True! 🥃
"Springbank is my favourite Springbank alternative" 😂
No joke. It's as close as they come. 😂
Hah yeah that one is a BEAST. 🥃
Gotta try some of these not known to me. :)
The “farmy” thing scares me
I’d forgotten to hit the “like” until ‘…just like your mother’ and my thumb moved of it’s own volition 😁
😂😂😂
Surprised there's no edradour
More lists to come! 🥃
@@Gwhisky unique peated for ballechin is my guess
Have not seen any kind of Springbank around here for years !
Yeah it's frustrating. 🥃
Cheers! 🥃
Well done 👍 thanks for sharing your thoughts on these. I like ruggedly flavourful 🙏👋ciao S.
Thanks for watching Sandro! Cheers my friend!
Glenrothes..?
I agree about Kilkerran. Every bit as good and it's actually available! 🥃
There is no way I can find Springbank or Kilkerran in my market! :(
Have an idea for the new list: "you only need 5 bottles your collection". But this list should cover different styles of whiskies. For example, only Bourbon matured, only sherry matured, mixed casks, lightly peated (dirty) and heavily peated. Just an idea..
Good idea! I might just use that. Thanks Mike! 🥃
Loch Lomond 12 is a good price. Non chill filtered. I was about to pull the trigger, but then realised it's most likely got e150 added. Not buying now.
I can confirm that it definitely does have added colour. 🥃
@@Gwhisky thanks bud.
Where was Benromach? 😢
Older Benromach (pre-rebranding) was quite dirty. I find the new line, while characterful, to be quite polished, actually. 🥃
@@Gwhisky What about Glenturret?
I love ben nevis. Doesn't nikka own ben nevis? And im told "from the barrel" contains some ben nevis, but FTB is not "dirty" or any of that good 'challenging' stuff.. (I wouldn't say challenging, id say interesting. Drinking shouldn't be a challenge lol imho)
Yeah there's Ben Nevis in a lot of Japanese blends. Certainly some in FtB. But they tend to make their blends more accessible than standard Single Malts from the distillery. 🥃
Edradour 10 y.o. Signatory Un-Chillfiltered is one the dirtiest imho. Not so easy to drink.
There's a characterful sherried whisky list coming. 🥃
I was thinking, no Craigallachie?????? 😂
Lol "hints of armpit." 🤮
I know they are a blender, but Black Adder Peat Reek. That’s a dirty whisky.
Yes it is!
Benromach Cask Strength.
"Just like your mother...", 😆🤣🤣🤣😂
Cheers! 🥃
Benromach CS, Kilkerran 8, Edradour 10 Signatory, and of course the legendary Springbank, especially the 12CS. You’ll need a shower after it
All great choices. A sherried list is coming... 😉
