sometimes after a restore you can't use ur addons (they appeared grey) just reboot ur host not just HA

    Very useful and thanks.
    Couple of questions though.
Would your original and new HA installations have to be the same version?
Would this also bring over your Nabu Casa remote access config?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the video. Some question. Node Red integrated in HA will be backed up and restored as well? What if the backup was from HA Os 2024.1 and you install 2024.4 and tries to restore will that go and what version will it shows after restore?

I don't use Node Red, but I would expect it to be restored, yes.
As for the backup, you are ok to restore a newer version onto an older fresh build, but I would not attempt the reverse. Download the older version and rebuild with that.
      Great questions, thanks for watching!

I'm sorry, I had to pause your video and laugh at your shirt for probably three minutes. 😀

Lol thank you, I'm so glad you found it funny. That always brings a smile to me face. :)
PS - I was going to tell a UDP joke, but I wasn't sure if anyone would get it.

I was trying to configure the remote access via duckdns from one of the tutorials online and after a short period of time while attempting to access my HA dashboard on my mac, I have it created my HA with UTM and I can start the instance on UTM and when I attempt to start HA app on the mac its just the blank screen with Yellow gear icon in bottom right corner. once I open the settings and look for the server it is pointed at the duckdns domain and it will not allow me to change it back to the previous local url even the nabucasa url that I've had before. Please help!

Since I have no idea what tutorial you followed, AND I somewhat famously hate apple devices, I'm afraid I have nothing to offer you in terms of help. Hopefully you're able to get it sorted!

@@fasthowto Yes thank goodness after almost 2 weeks of trying I was finally able to get things back up and running on a VMWare virtual machine container on my MacBook, It was super weird when I tried to restore from a backup it just sat at the restoring spinning status window and ran for over 10 hours without completing so I canceled the restore from backup and reattempted with the next oldest backup and it worked in less than 30 min. I was able to get everything back working as it was before I started messing with the remote server access configuration. I have since just nixed my efforts on the remote access and I'm sticking with Nabu Casa for now. Anyone can seriously mess up/destroy there HA by just trying to add a couple of nicety things to HA. And then boom its crashed and won't load you can't access it at all, and then struggle to get it back up and running as before.

I did make a video about how to configure DuckDNS and LetsEncrypt, and it does work. If this is still something you're trying to get sorted, maybe give it a watch? Definitely do keep in mind, though, that this has nothing to do with macs or UTM, since I run HA bare-metal on a NUC (although the video does also work for HAOS VMs as well as RPis as well - not sure about containers).

Maybe the developers have improved the restore process recently. In previous versions of HA, restoring from backup can take hours and hours with no indication of the progress. Very nerve racking.

I can confirm it runs quickly for me with an entire house full of smart devices. I would have added for most users to note and keep the same IP address when recreating the VM.

I can't speak to previous versions, but I'd imagine the amount of time it takes is dependent upon the number of integration, customizations, add ons, and the size of your database. The longer a system has been up, and the more complex it is, the more stuff to be processed during the restore process.
Ill be honest - this video was the first time I've ever been through the restore process. I made the video because I've had quite a number of people asking about it, and I also wanted to see how painful it was. The lack of a progress indicator is annoying, but I wouldn't say it's nerve wracking. I mean, building a clean install is super easy, and the backup file is not consumed during the restore process, so having to make a second attempt wouldn't be that big of an issue. If last night's file didn't work, try the night before, or the week before - which is why backups should always be generational, right? Better to lose a week's worth of changes than an entire system!
Great point about the IP address - I totally forgot about that. Didn't even check to see if it had changed back after the restore, but mostly because the source system didn't have a static IP on it anyway. I would like to think that anyone savvy enough to be doing backups and able to build a new, clean system, and perform a restore would also be savvy enough to think of rhe IP, but I shouldn't use that an excuse not to mention it. I'll do better!
Thanks for keeping me on my toes, and thank you both for watching!!
