- Franco Corelli (1921-2003) was an Italian tenor active in opera from the 1950s to 1976. He was noted for his charismatic stage presence and physical attractiveness as well as his powerful voice. Here he sings 'Di quella pira' from Verdi's Il trovatore. This video is in honor of his 87th birthday, which was precisely 7 days ago. Happy birthday, Maestro Corelli!
An interesting story about one of Corelli's 'Trovatore' performances:
In a 'Trovatore' production in Naples, Corelli angrily attacked a student in a third-tier box who heckled him during the performance. Outraged, Corelli bounded backstage, ran up three flights of stairs to the box and, finding the door locked, broke it down with his shoulder. In his Manrico costume, complete with sword, Corelli charged at the young man, but was restrained by two ushers. He was so infuriated that he lost his voice for 20 minutes, returning to the stage just in time to sing what he always considered his greatest ever rendition of 'Di quella pira.'
-From New York Times
Listeners to "Opera Fanatic" on WKCR-FM voted for Favorite Tenor of the Century. 47 singers received a grand total of 600 votes. Corelli barely edged past Björling, winning the poll. The first five places were:
First place: Corelli, with 185 votes or 30.8% of the vote
2nd: Björling 177 (29.5%)
3rd: Caruso 69 (11.5%)
4th: Gigli 50 (8.3%);
5th: Vickers 17 (2.8%)
No one sings this like Corelli. His high
Cs ringing out throughout the old Met
are legendary. Best vocal tenor of the
past century and even Pavarotti called
him "the greatest dramatic tenor of the
20th century."...he had his typical critics
but the public loved him. Most of the
critics are frumps anyway.
To all those who think Pavarotti meant Corelli was the greatest tenor of the 20th century, please note the words "dramatic tenor." These words are often used to describe a spinto tenor, which was the type of tenor Corelli was. There is a pretty wide consensus that the comment made by Pavarotti is accurate. A very, very brief description. A spinto is a tenor with considerable power. A big voice, able to sustain long, powerful lines. Pavarotti, on the other hand, was a leggero, the lightest of tenors. The leggero has a strong middle range and more ease in singing. He lacks the power of the spinto. The spinto, on the other hand, lacks the agility of a leggero. Spintos and leggeros cross into each other's territories with varying degrees of success. It all depends on the vocal demands of the arias and/or the skill of the tenors. Then, too, some leggero and lyric tenors become lyrico-spintos or spintos as their careers move forward.
There is no Di quella pira to compare. Fearless. Huge. Thrilling. A giant in the history of the voice of men. Astonishing.
This is possibly some of the greatest singing of all time
Never to be forgotten. Great Corelli. His Di quella pira is unique and cannot be copied.
Immenso.
By far the greatest "Di quella pira" known by men, and sung by prince of all tenors Franco Corelli..the most exciting, the most captivating and intense of all time!
definitely the best version of "di quella pira". Corelli is a genius
If Enrico Caruso was called "il Tenore Assoluto", I´d like to declare Franco Corelli "il Manrico Assoluto". Simply magnificent.
This man is the Cary Grant of Opera. He had everything.... The AMAZING Dramatic tenor voice, great stage charisma, and looks that kill. A convincing Manrico in trovatore, a real Calaf in Turandot, and the ONLY Mario cavaradossi!!! Bravo Maestro!!!!
We shall not hear his like again......
Astonishing.....
a year later, having hear more Piras than I can count... this still is the best studio version. utter beastly ferocity. you gotta love Corelli!
I particularly like that he is still audible over the choir.
+guido greco Sono d'accordo : in ordine : Corelli/Lauri Volpi/Kraus/Raimondi/Del Monaco/Filippeschi/Pertile/Caruso/Tamagno e pochi altri.
@@lucianozanella5833 Rosvaenge, jadlowcker, Merli, Tamagno, schipa, Tucker?
The best high C then I've ever heard! Bravo, Maestro!
Bravissimo Corelli!
Paolo Pettinelli condivido in pieno
They just don't have any taste! Corelli is fantastic
Ora sono 13 tutti fans di Grigolo Bocelli Meli Armiliato Villazon e Kaufmann.
E a cantare col coro finale
FANTASTICO! ECCEZIONALE! STELLARE! MAGNIFICO! 🤩🤩🤩💕💕💕👏👏👏👏👏
Nessuno come Franco!!! #VivaCorelli
Il miglior MANRICO in assoluto!!!insuperabile x tecnica vocale;bellezza vocale e ....BELLEZZA scenica!!!
that final high C is something out of this world. i i've heard many high C's but that's just absolutely incredible
Listen to eugene Conley, his high d's were like this C.
No one ever sang it close to what Corelli delivered here, and no one ever will. Incomparable! The best!
Listen to Mario del Monaco and Bjorling.
@@annereilley4892 del Monaco i agree but Björling didn't have the power required
@@annereilley4892 Are you joking? Björling's voice wasn't heavy enough and his timbre was ugly. del Monaco barked and could only produce a top C in the studio.
@@kbhprinsesse So funny, the people commenting on the bjorling version say he is the greatest and same with the del monaco video. The trouble with corelli is he had a weird lisp so that knocks him out of the contest.
@@annereilley4892 that's just plain ridiculous.
This man is a God. No one can touch this fearless singing. All hail. We shall not hear his like again........
At least we heard it.
1:50 is so insanely good, really builds an insame hype and chills. Really, this man had vocal chords of steel.
The greatest and most convincing Manrico in all aspects of the role, not just in Di quella pira.
And for me : the greatest tenor ever and my greatest favourite among all singers. No voice moves me like Corelli’s. Extraordinary amalgam of power, beauty, intensity, urgency, nobility, pathos, virility, tenderness, vulnerability.
Corelli is a powerhouse. God bless this man's talents.

The best Manrico of the 20th century.
Bravo, Maestro Corelli !!!
@PickBit This was recorded in 1964 which would make Corelli 43 years old. Prime of his life. He never did receive the honor that was due. I love the story of him going up into the gallery after the heckler!! He had the Italian temper alright, his offstage shouting matches with his wife were historic. Rudolph Bing told in his memoirs that Corelli once chased her out of the Met opera house with sword in hand. Thank you, GermanOperaSinger for helping to keep the legend alive.
Corelli. Is Tenor!
IL TENORISSIMO ! Come lui nessuno prima e nessuno dopo !!!!!
I must agree with the GermanOperaSinger. For me,Signore Corelli is the definitive Manrico. What a marvelous dramatic tenor.Che grandissima voce!
GRAAAAAAANDE UNICO INSOSTITUIBILE, 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
What a great perforformance!!!
Nobody beats Corelli on this song. Nobody.
Great version from correlli ⚘️⚘️
If anyone is feeling down my advice is to listen to Corelli's top C . It's better than a triple vodka.
Incredibly powerful. The C isn't all that makes this aria work, but it's a nice plus to have.
FINALMENTE un ALL'AAAAAAARMIIIII
con i controcoglioni !!! Franco sei un mito
For me - this man is the greatest Italianate Tenor of them all. Certainly the most thrilling. Enjoy. We will not hear his like again
ti adoro Franco Dario Corelli.

Beautiful birthday tribute.
Regarding the story you mentioned: Corelli and the man from the Naples audience (Improta, a lawyer) became friends after the incident, and had dinner together whenever the Corellis returned to Italy.
Fantastico! Sung by an Italian tenor, as well. Love it. Absolutely a gorgeous man with a voice to match. Thank you. I love all my tenors, fat, skinny, ugly, handsome, old and young and in-between, dead and alive as long as their voices are beautiful, spinto, lyrico, or whatever. Just give me wonderful singing!
so fiery and passionate. this is what opera is trully about.
Glorious!!!
@goldenthroat86 The highest written note is a b-flat that is just touched in the first act trio and, the traditonal b-flat sung at the end of the second act in the Italian score is written to the best of my knowledge in the French edition of the opera.
The best existing version
Franco Corelli is the only great tenor in the world! 8 April 2013 was his 92nd birthday! Remember, adore
Now that's a man!❤
Hear hear!!!
GermanOperaSinger,
Thank you for posting these great tenors here for us to listen to.
I appreciate it very much!!!!
bravo correlli.
@@user20mil38 He was a lirico spinto... You mean that he had both lyric and dramatic qualities
@@esterbruno8604 He certainly wasn’t a lyric spinto. He did not have a lyrical voice. It is more of a dramatic spinto voice.
To be honest, it doesn't really get any better than this!
Exquisita!
I own the highlights to this recording. Corelli's voice is legendary and the nerves he suffered with are more so. Corelli set such a high standard for himself that he could not stand when he felt he could not live up to it. It lead to some last minute cancellations(most notably, Domingo's Met debut) Corelli and Del Monaco were easily my Dad's favorite tenors.
Great to know. Corelli and Del Monaco were also my choice.
Agreed, I love Björling and all, but Corelli was/is the master of dramatic peices.
the best Di Quella Pira recording!! ever !!!!
Unmatched intensity. Transcendent beauty.
Tucker had a great ring too which didn't record well...I don't think these records do much justice to them...they must have been phenomenal live on stage.
Yes it's these little things which seperate the great tenors from the legendary ones.
But it can't be denied that he had a wonderful voice. And from a factual point of view, he had perfect technique and high notes. When someone starts letting their dislike for a singer get in the way of the truth, then I'll suggest that they need new ears. There is nothing at all wrong with saying loud and heavy singing is there? I never once insulted your preferences, and if you think that's rude, well, that would probably just be another sign that you need to grow up.
il piu' grande di tutti
An incredible voice. A Dramatic Tenor with definite overtones of a Lyrical Tenor as well. Perhaps my favorite Tenor.
and beniamino gigli?
Spinto tenor, actually.

His a spinto tenor...
Magnificent Franco, love the story, typical fiery fabulous Aries! We share the same Birthday so I would say that!
Many thanks for this post.
Goose bumps!! Wow...amazing breath control...go Franco
Fantastica !!! Fantastica !!! Fantastika !!!
Thank you for this wonderful recording! Magnificent voice! There's no other tenor like Franco Corelli. After God made him and his voice, he broke the mold.
Really magnificent!
Supreme.
a legszebb hang .
@PIPZZZ02 That final high C still brings me to tears. Corelli is one of my all time favorite tenors. What a grand and powerful voice!
But a triple vodka is good, too! ;^)
Now it's 2 dislikes!...Maybe one of them is Corelli's reincarnation lol. He apparently had terrible stage fright, so I would guess he'd be insecure about his recordings. But that strength and hold on that note! Wow! If you want someone you'll always feel comfortable with hitting & holding a note like that, you gotta go with Corelli!
IL BELLO CORELLI! seems with his voice was charging the whole orchestra.
Such a fantastic performance! Bravo Corelli!
Il migliore di tutti i tempi
Mi Manrico favorito “Franco corelli"
An outstanding incredible master ever. Merci beaucoup from Paris France 👍 👍 👍.
Meraviglioso♥️♥️♥️
Smash Franco..Smash!❤
Fantastico! Sung by an Italian tenor, as well. Love it.
totally agree... you took the words out of my mouth
Marvelous tenor 🤩☀️😍.
what a voice!!
Insuperabile grande Corelli
GORGEOUS
Foarte frumos!
Happy birthday, Franco !
I like the pick with the 50s house wife ;P
I though Corelli sung a B as his high note in this but according to my computer he is nailing 523hz(High C) everytime.
This really is the best Di Quella Pira i have heard. any competition?
Grande ''El Principe de los Tenores''
Oh hell what an incredible voice - reminds me a little of Mario del Monica
And Lucia Pavarotti
*Monaco
He has the power of Monaco but he has better tone and control.
@@alexmartya1733 Pavarotti is a pipsqueak alongside Corelli and Del Monaco. He is great in other roles, but Manrico was never for him.
@@xxsaruman82xx87 this is not the whole role! And Pavarotti did an excellent job with this aria. Much better legato and diction than del Monaco and Corelli. And better agility partially thanks to his smaller instrument! Corelli is phenomenal, though. I think he is the best Manrico on record.
