  • How do we develop the core strength and flexibility to rise from a prone position without using our hands?
Our tendency, especially as we get older, is to let rely on external crutches (putting our hands on the ground, putting our hands on our knees, using furniture, relying on momentum from a sudden jerk, rocking motion or roll) to get up. Unfortunately, this encourages a weak "core", which worsens as we get older until suddenly one day we find we can't get up at all.
This video introduces some exercises that let the student explore how to rise from lying flat without using their hands. It also shows an exercise exploring how to be comfortable relaxing and compressing around one's midsection; being unable to compress due to lack of flexibility, held breath, or more commonly a misplaced instinctual fear can limit the student's ability to move the hara (center) over and past the feet (the "ball" is too big!).
If you have neck or spine injuries, please do not attempt the neck stretch (yoga plow position) without qualified supervision.
This video was filmed during an advanced and soft ukemi seminar taught by Sensei Guy Hagen and hosted at the Shobu Aikido of Houston Aikido Dojo in Houston, Texas (shobuaikidohouston.com).
Sensei Hagen is a chief instructor at the ASU Aikido Chuseikan of Tampa Bay dojo, which is affiliated with the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba and Aikido World Headquarters, and provides quality adult and family martial arts instruction in Tampa, Florida.
