Sooo very excited.. my Magic Marine Smart harness arrived today! Getting ready to sail my restored '85 H16 cat. I've never sailed a 16 before or a cat with jib or trapezed on the wire. I'm excited and terrified at the same time, like the time last year when a 50' whale swam under my '89 H14 as I sailed in light winds and could see it under the cat! Whooa! Cheers
I *am* an old person, actually. And I always walk like that 🤣🤣🤣 (see @4:11) Jokes apart, the Magic Marine _Smart_ harness you are showing is great ! 👍 Unless you are a _"Racing Hero"_ you don't need anything more fancy than that. And even if you actually are, you won't need more than that either 😉
I think unless you're doing some serious hours on one tack, the smart harness is enough - or if you have a back problem - you can get more support with a juicier model.
I've been wearing them for so long that i hardly notice them. If it's hot - no wetsuit I generally wear 2 pairs of shorts which makes it much more comfortable.
Yes, we used to use windsurf seat harness' all the time. It's ideal if you can change the hook to a boat style hook which is slightly more closed. one for the next top tips video!
Yes, sadly the hook generally gets lost which is why you only pull the release if you're in a compromising situation. If it's the difference between remaining stuck and having to get a new hook
hi joe, thank you for talking about this topic. Personnally i have a problem : i am a bit tall, and large...(1,83m, 120 kgs) I do buy the sail marine 2016 XXLarge, but it is to tight at the belly and the legs. I am deseperatly looking for an XXXL size and for now, didn't find one. do you have a suggestion? (no, i cannot do a diet ;) )
@@cornebistouille the magic marine only goes to XXL - here is a sizing chart to see if that could work - www.rssailingstore.com/AdditionalDepartments/Footer-Content/Size-Chart
cornebistouille , I got some webbing the same width as the harness webbing and found the matching buckles and extended all the straps. It cost about $15. You may have to get creative with the padding, but it works for us.
@@kenerickson1346 thank you very much ! i tried to sew some webbing to add length on an old trapeze jacket but its crappy... ill try to find some buckkle and do it more properly like you did.
How tall are you Joe? I see your harness is a Large. The reason I ask is that I am about to order a harness like yours from overseas. I'm about the same weight as you and 5'9" tall. The Magic Marine size chart has me at the low end of Medium. But the guy selling them thinks an XL would suit me. I'm probably erring towards Large.
It's a Magic Marine Smart Harness, I've been using them for about 10 maybe even 15 years and never looked back. You can find one here: www.amazon.com/dp/B078ZGL28G/?ref=exp_josephbennett_dp_vv_d

Thank you Joe. Just the info I was looking for
Glad to help
Good one Joe, I am yet to try trapeze so this was perfect timing. Love your channel!
more on it's way!
Good timing. I'm looking for a couple of harnesses.
Hi Joe, thank you so much, pretty good video.
Can your next video be about trapezing positions on the boat and how you get on and off smoothly while on the boat
That sounds like a good plan - I'll get onto it today!
I should have it finished tomorrow or Monday at the latest.
Great thanks so much keep up the good work

Found it Joe thank you!
Welcome!
what is a reasonable combination of harness and PFD?
..... a lot of stuff to wear 🙂
You get used to it.
The harness is very light.
Looks much more comfortable than a rock climbing harness.
not to bad!
So you are putting the harness under the PFD?
Yes, that is the trend now. Either way works - it's down to personal preference
How comfortable is this for sitting on the boat and general moving around the watercraft in bent over positions
I've been wearing them for so long that i hardly notice them.
If it's hot - no wetsuit I generally wear 2 pairs of shorts which makes it much more comfortable.
2 questions: 1/ how can you improvise one? 2/ can you do it yourself from a windsurf one?
Yes, we used to use windsurf seat harness' all the time. It's ideal if you can change the hook to a boat style hook which is slightly more closed.

Hey Joe, where does the hook go when it dehooks? In the ocean? And then we need to replace them? Or does it stay on the trap line, cheers.
Yes, sadly the hook generally gets lost which is why you only pull the release if you're in a compromising situation. If it's the difference between remaining stuck and having to get a new hook

Yes, Large will be the right choice i think - i'm about 5'10 and it fits perfectly.
Thanks Joe, that’s very helpful.
