This was so interesting!! Def. found myself incredibly invested in the countdown, but also, I genuinely love that you've got access to such a massive dataset because of the tech we're all wearing everyday. What a cool use of that info!
Aw thanks for watching! 😴
But isn't the entire dataset skewed by survivorship bias? In that people who are worried about their sleep and not getting enough sleep will make the effort to wear a sleep tracker, while people who are fine with sleep won't bother or spend the money on a sleep tracker. Like people who are not worried about their weight won't bother stepping on a pair of scales every day, while people who are, will and keep track.
There's a lot of flaws when it's just testing people who chose to spend money on a device.. so many people don't have the money for a watch like that
To make it worse, this selection bias could well vary between countries as well: the richer your country, the more people will have fitness devices regardless of their health, while you can imagine that a poorer country's data will skew more. This will have exactly the effect we see here, with rich western countries on top.
Self-citing because you're awesome like that!
I'm not certain if seeing the global aggregate makes me feel better about my own sleep or concerned for everyone, everywhere.
A bit of both 😅
Go Finland! We are always a bit surprised and skeptical when we top an international list, as we feel like we aren't doing anything special here. Things seem a bit too boring here to be considered special, but perhaps that's part of what helps. Life isn't exactly "boring" in Finland, but at least where sleep is concerned, Finns aren't as pressured by work or family for time, so people simply have more time in the evenings to themselves. And perhaps that lends well to getting better sleep.
Yesss love to see a self citation 🙌 this was such a cool video, you've inspired me to start tracking my sleep!!
Aw thank you!

Great vid!
fascinating! I’d love to see how this changes over time
Great video as always! Suggestion for future sleep episode... why can I fall asleep for a nap in .5 seconds but it takes me 2 hours to fall asleep at night?
Here in Japan, most people don't know how to sleep, and the utter contempt authorities have in protecting people's right to rest is astonishing.
1) Ambulances play the siren sound at full blast at night because they say it's the law and they must warn everyone they're approaching. Obvious to say they wake up everyone half a mile around where they pass and you don't wanna live anywhere near a hospital.
2) Most houses built in the last 30 years have wafer thin walls. You'll hear your neighbors fart, let alone anything they say.
3) Nearly zero protection for people wanting to sleep: technically, after 11 you could call the cops if your neighbors are loud, but they never will show up
4) Most people think that "sleeping" 2 hours 4 times a night is sleeping 8 hours. No, it's not. You just had a 2 hour nap. The rest is time that is wasted. Everyone here in Japan is asleep in the train, even standing, and then, if they're in school or college, 90% of the students will fall asleep unless the classroom lights are blindingly bright.
If you wanna have a proper night sleep, this nation is a hellhole.
i too am doing a phd in the hope i can eventually cite myself in a video. up there in the top 3 reasons for doing the thing.
relatedly,,,, since temperature can impact sleep, have you come across research that uses a global dataset like this and global temperatures or regional temperature trends?
Oh this is such an interesting question! There is lots of research that looks at seasonal variations in sleep, but it mostly focuses on light changes (as that's one of the strongest cues for your circadian rhythm). It would be hard to separate the effects of the summer sun from increased temperatures in a study. But I suspect those without air conditioning, and in countries more affect by climate change, would have poorer sleep.
Interesting video, Vanessa. Glad you've got another outlet for your inner nerd, thanks to Samsung. One of the more interesting insights from my own sleep tracking experience is that my data says I'm generally better at sleeping than I give myself credit for. Talking about sleep efficiency, specifically. Still, I'm always working on better bedtime habits, as an unpaid professional bedtime procrastinator.
Sleep is not so well understood. So it's always interesting to see new studies and information on the subject. We often underestimate the importance of a good sleep. Thanks!
Agreed, and thanks for watching!
Oh my gosh just another reason to add to my list of why I want to go back and move to Finland!!
My Garmin watch does sleep tracking. I don't use it to compare nights, but to compare weeks and months, trying to connect changes to life events. I find it useful to remind me how weak my bladder or digestive system is compared to my sleep levels. For example, my data showed me that alcohol after dinner is a no-no. With and before is OK, but after is a significant negative for me. Data is power, but obsessing over data is a weakness. Checking in occasionally is far better than obsessively self-monitoring.
i have a lot of sleep disturbances, vivid nightmares to night terrors to plain old insomnia. meds help, and naps.
Perhaps those wearing smartwatches don’t form a representative sample.
This is an excellent thought and one I had as well. But I was actually expecting people who wear smartwatches to do BETTER than what we see in large surveys - they care about their health somewhat and have the means to buy a smartwatch. But actually, they were very similar to what we see in large surveys in terms of sleep duration. I find this *fascinating*, because it suggests that even if you have the interest and means to take steps to improve your sleep, it's still really hard.
This should be pinned. The sample is, at best, representative of middle and upper-middle classes. (I doubt upper classes would wear Samsung when Apple has better brand recognition.)
2:28 I wish the World Cup trophy would be Cricket one since u guys won it recently.
Could you shift to right or left when you're on your laptop; I'm trying to get a look at dinosaur panting(?) behind you. Heck, maybe do a short about it. From what I can see it looks cool!
after midnight in Australia lol. Hello Vanessa
Hi! Hope you get some sleep soon 😅
@@braincraftThanks from Sydney at nearly 2am. 🙂👍
I have a sleep tracker and I do love looking at my stats everyday - I still don't do anything about my bedtime procrastination 😭
Aw it's so common! Perhaps time to try the sleep coaching when you're ready 🙂
Thanks for your work! I'm curious about the conflict between creating and effortlessly maintaining habits through repetitive practice and other brain activity associated with underlying anxiety, worry and avoidance...
Also, for the sake of balance and conflict of interest, it would be nice to see your scientific reviews of other sleep-assisting devices and apps... 😊🙏
Also, it'd be good to see the socio-economic and socio-educational connect of the participants and compare that data with perhaps others who don't have access to the technology.
Hey, Vanessa! I'd love to see a collab video for "RUclipsrs Pursuing PhDs" with you and Destin from Smarter Every Day. Both of you have created videos stemming from PhD content, while also straying outside that domain. Destin has a family and a huge channel, while you are a pair with a great but smaller channel. There are so many angles to investigate! I think your take on this would be most useful overall.
Austrian here: I sleep 7:15h every day with more or less sleep having a negative impact. So I'm right on spot with the average but that's the ideal sleep duration for me
Keep it up!! 💤
"are the rich people in *country* sleeping the best?" There i fixed it for you
Where did your country finish?! 💤 And thanks for watching - this channel can only keep going with a mix of sponsorships and Patreon, and I'm pretty stoked to be working with Samsung. I appreciate your support after all these years! 🙏
My country was no on the list. I can extrapolate from some neighboring countries that were on the list to get 7 hours and 10 minutes of sleep. Seems about right. The difference between 8th and 18th place is only 10 minutes, which is laughably small when compared to the extreme end of the list.
Mexico ranked at 24 😭
Bit disappointed my country (Ireland) wasn't on the list, but I suppose we're probably fairly close to the UK because of the similar climate and lifestyles.
Love it
🥰
I'm glad that you included the full list, because I had a feeling this was a fairly white/euro-centric study.
Is that watch thing actually comfortable to sleep with? It looks pretty bulky liked it'd get caught on sheets.
At first it was noticeable, but I've been wearing it to bed for over a year now and I don't notice it any more.
Im from finland. Can confirm we love to sleep. Also its finlands independence day today, so good timing 😁
🇫🇮
You did a terrific job with this, Vanessa. Did you know that almost all geniuses get between 7-9 hou4s of sleep a night, with the tilt toward the high end of that? Mozart was the lone exception. I think you need a bit more, and I sure messed up last n8ght, and I paid for it today. I just start researching something and keep going on and on and on.............and on.
Competitive sleeping. I like that idea. 😎
It's a real thing in Montenegro, no joke!
😎
if I had a samsung sleep tracker, the study would've shown global average going up to 13 hours a day 😂
Anecdote that I read (i can't find the source) is that opposites attract, in the sense that there are a lot of couple where one partner is an early bird and the other is a night owl. Does your data support this? or is it 50/50 (i.e. random)?
nice!
💤
It's interesting to see this kind of insight coming from the health data collected by smart watches.
Ironically smart watch manufacturers are also mobile phone manufacturers and mobile phone as we know is the main reason behind attention deficit, vision problems and bad sleep quality.
There is definitely an irony there. Have you seen my series 'Attention Wars' from a few years ago? It's mainly focused on apps/social media companies but may be of interest. A lot of the mobile phone manufacturers are doing a lot to try to facilitate sleep (with Sleep Mode, night shift etc.), but some of my research suggests that for some of us, our habits are actually so strong we manually override these features 😬
Kudos to Samsung to choose the best scientist and communicator for this job.
How many countries were in the data set? Were the top ten countries out of all countries or only those who had a certain # of data points?
Great question! There were 28 countries in the data set, you can see them all on screen at 6:50
So it is entirely possible that the residents of Liechtenstein get 8.5 hours of sleep a night and are just crushing it.
The worst thing that makes me sleep less than I would need to is also the most obvious one: the alarm clock at 6:00 every morning from Monday to Friday. It is especially bad in winter, when it is still dark outside when the alarm wakes me up.
If only we didn't have to work!
@@braincraft On the contrary, working is good and for some people it is neccessary for mental health. It just would be better to work less than 40 hours weekly. 8 hours per day is OK for young people who have a lot of energy, but above the age of 40 it should be only 6 hours daily, enabiling me to sleep longer.
I just went through a week with 3-4 hours of sleep a night. Had to substitute my colleagues due to sickness... I think my sleep wont approve before winter is over
Ugh I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you can get some more rest soon, sending good vibes your way!
9:25 That's a misleading graph. If you don't pay close attention to the values, it looks like Sleep Efficiency has dropped dramatically, but the actual change is only 0.37 units. (What _is_ the unit for "sleep efficiency", anyway?)
Me dragging down the Australian average 😅
Another thing that could explain some of the results is that Asian countries tend to have older population, and older people require less sleep. You mentioned that it may also be related to the more rigorous studying regime of Asian countries. Perhaps narrow the dataset to may be 30 ~ 50 year olds (to filter out school and uni/college age) and see if the results differ enough from the entire dataset. This will also align all the ages and see if my first hypothesis has any basis.
Brb moving to Finland
💤
While I consume alcohol less than once a month, and don’t use alcohol as a sleep aid, I know many who seem to. I’ve found that if I have two Guiness in the evening , my uninterrupted sleep time and total hours increase, and I wake up feeling more rested. I would be interested to know if you have any information or professional opinion on this topic. Thanks.
Is it going to be timezones? I assume it is going to be timezones...alright, good night. I have not seen the video yet but I have to sleep.
Thanks, Vanessa, for your recent visit to Lateral with Tom Scott... that brought me here and I've subscribed!! 😀
Should have sorted based on city vs rural areas
Wait I always thought those animal phenotypes were pseudoscience?? I keep seeing them in FB ads and assumed it was some dodgy astrology style thing 👁👄👁
Samsung sharing our data with RUclipsrs 😅
Please add audio track . Especially for Bengali
But... how many countries are in the data pool? Just these 10?
I am the reason my country has a bad sleep record 😁😁
We love outliers shifting the mean 😅
Hope you get some rest tonight.
As someone who recently bought a Galaxy Watch 4, just to track my SLEEP and Cycling.
I feel good about my decision.
Nervous Penguin 🐧
Lol welcome to the club! 🐧 After a year I managed to graduate to a lion
I hate that the Dutch beat us Belgians at sleeping, it keeps me up at night
I'm so glad that I subscribed to you after seeing you in a pewdipie video, idk when and why that was though
This made me think.
1. How good is the watch at recording when people sleep?
2. The watch need to be charged, maybe the people that track there sleep are people that think they sleep worse than they should, or maybe you prioritize sleep more if you go through the trouble of recording your sleep.
3. When comparing countries there are also a lot of differences. First of there are only 28 countries on the list. But a smart watch might be "cheep" in richer countries and expensive in poor countries, thus the demographic and the objective of the groups might be very different between countries. It might be young, sporty and health focused people in one country and people with focus on prestige in another country. Maybe it is a popular gift for your parents in one country and a pregnancy gift in others.
4. Maybe it is correlated with the noise where people sleep. Maybe countries with many small towns have less noise at night?
So many questions.... Honestly I feel like your would need to know more to draw any conclusion.
I might read the Sleep duration samsung page later, there might be more details.
The average person in some countries can't really afford a smart watch and they might have the worst or maybe the best sleeps.
Definitely hear this. Interestingly, the results of this study are pretty similar to large surveys
@@braincraft definitely interesting.
@@braincraft and two videos in 12 days?! 👍
@@SirAU I'm trying 🥹
From uk I sleep 10 hrs and still feel tired, and the reason why is very clear
Ugh I'm sorry to hear that you're tired, but glad that you know the underlying reason ❤️
I'm glad to see Poland at 17th place, before the USA!

She wake up with the perfect hair and makeup
Reduce stress not and not distress
I have this feeling that people how just chill and sleep more don´t even bother with smart watch. !Warning anecdote! every smart watch user I know is a workaholic or hopes to improve his treible sleep with data.
Ha perhaps, I wonder if people who use them may tend to be more neurotic about their health (i.e., me 🙋)
Not like I'm an expert, but the sheer amount of sleep-related content posted in the past years makes me wonder if
(a) you truly care about this fascinating aspect of our lives
(b) you truly have problems to get quality sleep
(c) yes.
I hate that this data was collected from watch users who more than likely are unaware they were participating or providing data.
In 2021 my average sleep was 9:15 hours and in 2022 it was 8:57 hours. This year it's 7:40 hrs 😅
Do you think that may be due to coming out of the pandemic? Like are you now commuting, doing more social things, then you were in 2021?
Yes partially
Belgium pill consumption isn't a factor. Since covid Belgians work more from home so we can sleep longer.
I'm sure there are many factors here for all the countries! I was doing my best to offer some kind of explanation that I thought was mildly entertaining, perhaps similar to the Discussion of a journal article :)
@@braincraft I think it's a misrepresentation about Belgians. Regardless, thank you for the video. It was good and entertaining
Is South Korea one of the worst in sleep hours?
For the countries measured, yes - most of the Asian countries were clustered towards the bottom
@@braincraft yes, under the watch of Samsung.🥱
I can’t believe that not even the best score was near 8 hours. Averages of 7 mean a lot of people are very sleep deprived. No wonder global health is declining.
No one can accuse you of plagiarism is you cite yourself.
So most countries sleep like 6 hours or so? This is bulls hit or just ridiculous.
Honestly, i think majority of Australians dont get enough sleep. Average would be like 6
Yeah, even for the countries that are doing "better" in this data set, there are still widespread sleep issues. It's generally accepted that 1/3 people aren't getting enough sleep :(
@braincraft and sales of Coffee indicate that
It is a shame you won't mention the nefarious neuroscience like what Dr James Giordano talks about. The ability to brain hack people, programme them etc with the weaponsied wireless technologies. Surely it isn't able to be denied that sleep quality went down massively as the wifi ramped up.
Photothearpy using bio active wavelengths supersedes anything and there's no connectivity to internet or companies collecting personal data like sleeping and heart beats. There are special interest groups that buy such databases 😉
I came here from the collab with "Answer in Progress", and to be honest: I am kind of disappointed in this video.
I am aware, that you are doing sponsorships to be able to keep doing your work.
It's just, that this felt like one half listing unconnected datapoints, and another half plugging Samsung (and their big data collection machine).
Which still is a South Korean armaments group.
Still interested in your other videos, but had to get this off my chest.
On the other hand, I do not even know how you can stay afloat in a "clean" way - almost everything is connected today and used for whitewashing.
Data is biased. Should control for population age. Western countries are older and older people sleep less.
Me watching this at 20:00 in the middle of my 3 hour sleep time between shifts. I woke up today at 06:20 and expect to be back home tomorrow around 07:30. 🥱😴💤
Aw hope you can get some rest soon!
@braincraft I just woke up after sleeping 3,5 hours. Due to traffic and a power nap I was home at 09:00. 27,5 hours awake is a little bit to long... 🥱😴🥱
I’m not surprised these countries were the top. If only the US had better work like balance 🥲 great video!
My thoughts exactly! Thanks for watching 😴
