Interesting. Billy and Mandy creator Maxwell Atoms once complained about this very concept of "story math" on his "Emo Jarts" essay on Tumblr a long time ago, discussed the need to weave it but not be a slave to it.
i think the issue with the formula is that it disregards that an action scene is made to elicit an specific feeling from the viewer which is highly variable depending on the movie and the location in the story. For example if you were a basic marvel fan, an action scene where two heroes banter with eachother while easily beating a bunch of nameles henchman is the perfect action scene for that kind of movie for that kind of public. Something similar can be said about the expected suspension of disbelief of the viewer, if you can have it makes sense is always better, but not always necesary. i have friend who is capable of taking seriously and enjoying the dumbest movies (i envy him a little because of it).
I think “beating a bunch of nameless henchmen” paints a picture of what COULD happen though, like what the stakes could be, even if they’re not really in personal danger. Like, in Avengers, Captain America doesn’t seem like he’s in much danger at all as he’s fighting the Chitauri, but the action works because if they lose then New York City is destroyed.
