I really think the conbinis need to colloborate more with the youtubers. I think Chris deserves a FamilyMart sponsorship at the very least.
All the Jtubers (or whatever people are these days) really do drive the urge for non-Japanese people to go visit them. And I think that deserves some recognition.
Personally though, FamilyMart is my fave. Their spaghetti, though oddly brown, is delicious, and I love their egg onigiri for breakfast.

Me and my friends visited Japan for the first time last summer. We specifically went to Sapporo in Hokkaido. We tried all konbinis, even Hokkaidos own Seicomart. But at the end we all agreed that Lawson was our favourite. In my experience, they just seemed to have the largest selection of products and they saved us many times throughout the trip!

Here's my wild take after a month in Japan... I did like local supermarket bentos better than combini food overall... in some smaller cities you also don't get to choose the Combini close to you, so the best Combini food is the one you have close to your hotel, hostel or air BnB :) That have been said... yeah, I fully agree with the video! I was here watching with my wife and your final conclusion totally matched my prediction :D Also, another thing you did not test, but I felt... Family Mart staff was always SO helpful, regardless of where, with Lawson coming at a second.

@@JunkFoodJapanOh, I didn't mean to imply the workers at 7Eleven were not helpful... but in every Family Mart my baka gaijin ass always felt people would spend that extra minute helping me out. But maybe it is just my impression and now bias, but the brand left a favoring vibe :D

I've always been a 7/11 fan just due to 1 drink: the 7/11 branded Yuzu and Lemon Cider. It's like a better version of CC Lemon in my opinion. I've always been relatively balanced with the food options as it always depended which one was closer to the place I was staying, but it's funny to see Famima sweep through this challenge and 7/11 struggle. One more thing is, it would have been cool to see an onigiri comparison as that's usually my go to for konbini food.

Hi Nick, I really like conbinis in Japan, as they are always open and as the name suggests, so convenient. I usually go to 7/11 or Family Mart, but not really for a specific reason, just because they are the most common ones. I dont have a favorite, as they seem quite similar for myself. In 7/11 what I really like, is the curry pan. In the family mart, my favorite is the regular fried chicken. And I guess in Lawson, its the fried chicken nuggets (regular taste, not with cheese or any other flavours).

Oh man, I'm gonna enjoy this video I think, because I have some OPINIONS on this subject. I've paused it at 10 seconds in to start this comment, but I'll watch it before I finish, and share a few thoughts. Keep in mind of course, I'm basing it on my limited scope of experience - Iwate and Miyagi, from Morioka to Sendai, with heavy focus on Ichinoseki and Higashiyama. Having had no car for the first 18 months, I've spent considerable time at convenience stores. Looking forward to the rest of the video.
I'm not sure the chicken comparison was fair, because you're comparing nuggets to karaage. The nuggets are all not very good. I recently did a karaage comparison, head to head, and Lawson won, with 7-11 closely behind. Family Mart lost by a lot. Problem here is that Lawson in my town stops making karaage early, so sometimes they don't have it. All 4 Lawsons. 7-11 is most likely to have it after 6pm.
Now, the regular fried chicken is something else. Again, for me 7-11 and Lawson were close, with Family Mart coming in last. UNLESS Family Mart has the crispy ume fried chicken, which is seasonal, and by far ichiban. Lawson has more variety in their fried foods, including ika furai, and they put their sauces out here, while the others don't, so that's a plus. BUT, you have to include another player if we're talking about fried chicken. New Days. The train station konbini. The New Days in Iwate DON'T have fried chicken. Even in Morioka. I can't think of one. But in Sendai, they do, and I think it might be the best of the FOUR.
New Days ALWAYS has my favorite drink, which is an Asahi lime chuhi, and it's always 199 yen. I like that about them. I don't really care for Japanese style beer, and I don't drink liquor and sake on a regular basis, so that being said I don't really like Family Mart's drink selection (yes, we're talking about alcohol). 7-11 is passable, but Lawson takes #3 on the drinks. New Days gets #1 on drinks, not just my favorite one. Daily Yamazaki gets #2 on drinks, and Daily Yamazaki has the best baked goods.
I usually go to the grocery store for bentos, because they're like 200 yen cheaper. But, I occasionally get the salad chicken if I need a quick fix of protein (the smoked one, all the others are awful), but that's pretty much the same at all of them. Melon pan - Lawson. Sandwiches, yeah, maybe Family Mart if it's the 3, but definitely New Days if you include that one. Sorry, my non-driving life was heavily tied to the train stations, but they really do have a higher class of sandwiches.
7-11 has some nice useful items and the hair gel I use. I needed a screwdriver, and didn't want to walk 1 hour to the nearest hardware store. 7-11 had a nice set for around 200 yen. Yakuodo is a much farther walk too. Sometimes they also have fresh vegetables here, at good quality and prices.
Lawson recently stepped up their game with school type products, so I buy their notebooks now. It's surprisingly difficult to find spiral bound notebooks here, even in stores that sell school supplies. I'm not paying $6 for an A4 sized one either, so I get the slightly smaller ones at Lawson that they now have, and they're higher quality than Daiso and Seria notebooks.
Family Mart had the best instant ramen selection in Higashiyama, but here, they don't. 7-11 has the most sauces, and the best self-branded instant coffee.
I used to get onigiri to eat at the local train stations a lot. Lawson here often doesn't have onigiri that aren't wrapped in seaweed. Now, the seaweed, no matter how good you are at eating them, always gets everywhere. So, I avoided these. New Days has my favorite onigiri, the gomoku pork one. 7-11 has a version, but it's not as good. 7-11 usually has the most variety in onigiri. Family Mart, it's hit or miss with onigiri.
Lawson still provides free wi-fi, and they're the only one that does.
What is the best konbini? I'd say, "It depends what you're going there for." For me, a New Days with chicken wins, but in Iwate for most days, Lawson wins. 7-11 is a good resource for the occasional personal items/tools needs. But now I have a car, so 7-11 is good if Lawson doesn't have any karaage left. Candy selection varies, but I'm gonna have to give that one to New Days, followed closely by 7-11 because I found German gummies at 7-11 today. That said, New Days is solid, they just don't seem to have any of my personal favorites.
Oh, and 7-11 has the best bathrooms.
Anyway, thanks for the video! Looking forward to seeing more.

But yeah, I don't understand why 7/11 can't run Better options here in the States like they do in Japan. I want the VTuber bread with custard filling dang it!

I feel nostalgia, they still have p**n magazines in convenience stores, that disappeared completely long time ago with feminism and internet in my country.

    "Who doesn't like cheese?!"
    (shyly raises hand)
Heheh. To be fair, I like cheese in some contexts -- like, on pizza, if and only if the pizza place in question uses good-quality cheese (if not, I prefer even my pizza cheeseless!) -- but in general, I find cheese overrated, and will usually order menu items at restaurants without it, or pass on buying pre-made conbini items if they include cheese.
Same goes for mayonnaise and tartar sauce, but even more strongly -- I absolutely despise both, to the extent that they kind of trigger my gag reflex, so I absolutely CANNOT bring myself to eat almost anything with either on it. Which is a real problem here, since Japan looooooves putting mayo on absolutely EVERYTHING.
If I had to pick one or the other, I'd say mayo over tartar sauce, as I actually find it tolerable enough in certain dishes (okonomiyaki, for instance), whereas I generally think of tartar sauce as just... flat-out ruining anything it touches, for me. I've never enjoyed a single bite of anything with tartar sauce on it in my life.
I'm a bit weirdly picky, though, as I also hate all salad dressings (anything vinegar-based, essentially), as well as ketchup and mustard. When it comes to condiments, the king for me is katsu sauce, with okonomi sauce a close second, demiglace a close third, and shoyu, ponzu, and other similar sauces perfectly fine and rather enjoyable as well.
Kind of makes you wonder how I can watch Junk Food Japan and enjoy it, but the fact is, most of what you eat DOES look good to me -- I'd just probably order it without mayo, or without cheese, etc. were I to try the same dish in the same restaurant myself. Nuts to those who say it's rude to customize orders in Japan -- nobody here has ever minded it yet! ;)
As for the conbini results, I'm actually surprised Famima took the clean sweep like that, as I've definitely found their bentos lacking compared to 7-11's in my own personal experience (and their chicken never tasted measurably different from 7-11's to me, either, TBH). Then again, my basis of comparison is more curry-centric bento and soborodon, both of which I think 7-11 does far better than Famima. (And both 7-11 and Famima do all of these things far better than Lawson, which consistently has always been third place for me; though to be fair, I find Lawson's desserts are usually at least on par with the other two!)
I'm a bit sad that the comparison ended with these three chains, however, as I still remember when Ministop was the fourth big chain, very much standing toe-to-toe with the other three. And while there are fewer Ministops now than there used to be, I think Ministop still does very much hold its own -- Ministop may even have the best chicken of the four! And its bentos usually try for unique meals that the other three don't offer, and are typically quite good. I feel like if Ministop were included in this showdown, it... still wouldn't have placed first, but it may very well have come second!
Pity Sunkus is no more, as I'd be really curious how they held up, too. But if you REALLY wanted to cover all the bases, you could always add Yamazaki Shop and My Basket into the mix! ;)
Might be a fun idea for a rematch episode somewhere down the line, no? Heheh.

I'm with you on the tartar sauce and use miracle whip or Kewpie mayo when needed. I dislike bland cheese and prefer my cheese to be at least aged for 4 years or a really strong blue cheese or limburger; I'll typically buy a French cheese over anything else. I abhor supermarket cheddar cheese that claims to be old yet tastes like an eraser.
