Kai is 100% dead wrong at 4:38, .....all pros who own and have used the Zeiss 21mm agree (and so do I) that the 20mm 1.8G Nikkor is SUPERIOR, better corner to corner, less vignetting.
The one lens where the Nikkor destorys the Zeiss is their 20mm 1.8 G as against the Zeiss 21mm and the new Milvus.
I have 11 Zeiss lenses, love them, and have used them all, but the Zeiss 21mm SUCKS
Maybe you dont like it because it is still the same lens diesign from the old contax line. By the way do you also have the Zeiss Classic ZF?
I'm calling it. Zeiss is the king of lenses.
+Spencer Thayer (Grabs popcorn... Waits for Leica crew...)
+Spencer Thayer Is Leica the queen?
lol
I think most have said the Otus both 55 and 85 are better than anything Leica has to offer. But maybe overall Leica has more higher performing lenses.
+Jesus Martinez you mean "leica leica leica ...."
In case anyone is curious, Milvus is the genus of birds of prey consisting of the red kite (_Milvus milvus_), black kite (_Milvus migrans_) and yellow-billed kite (_Milvus aegyptius_).
+beeble2003 - And if you want to be really stylish, then the correct order is black-red-yellow.. ;)
That 21mm Lens looks pretty amazing!
Tanks aren't boring KAI!. They're precious and full of democracy.
+Bungle2010 Yes, 60 tons of democracy (sarcasm)
Wow! What a fantastic lens!
The music in this episode made me think. Since Kai is in the UK now, how about a mock review in the style of Philip Bloom?
this review was on point! love the testing style.
I love Kai's smooth ring!
I think the 85mm Milvus is especially interesting. The optical design is very similar to the 85mm Otus! Which might explain why the 85mm seems to be the best of the bunch :)
Unequalled Zeiss Milvus,awesome,high quality,magnific!!!
Nat Images: And expensive !!
You guys really are the Top Gear of the Camera world. It's a shame the adverts a forced on us though.
I want a comparison with the older lenses, i have a feeling that the performance of those new lenses are almost if not exactly the same, the 50mm Kay says is much improved...
Manual focus is the best !
i actually like manual lens' especially the ones with aperture rings. i bought a Nikon adapter for my 5d mark2 so so ill be able to use old nikkor lens :D i just enjoy the feel of more things to do hehe
THANK YOU for being serious with video reviews, like you were 6 years ago when you started
I quite like the look of new sigma and tamron prime lenses but boy these zeiss lenses are beautiful
I've noticed that Kai doesn't make as many "vulgar" jokes anymore. Probably the fact that everyone around him understands English makes him feel less bold.
+Danny B. he has his moments but maybe he realized he is not as funny as he thinks
+felicianoabe Kai's funnier than even he realises.
+Danny B. He does talk about his 'ring' in this one.
+Danny B. It must be him being on Southwold Pier that did it. He is indeed being a bit serious (boring?) these days. Wonder when he is going to start making more of those bad jokes again?
Oh those grannies will get him for his potty mouth...
ATG says Hasselblad once used Zeiss lenses didn't give away any lens key. They saved them so now you can use it on these lenses to drop and scratch the lenses.Remember those years when many pros lost their film side on the film back?Beside all that, many today shooters won't buy a lens that is full manual.Just like many have to shoot RAW and then cheat some more to correct mistakes.
Awesome for video on the FS5!
Sharp indeed :-) I think Zeiss should have put the metal knurled grip on the focusing ring like on some of their other models.
Another item on my wish list of wishes that will never come true
“That moment when your sack shrivels up” 😂😂😂 Best lens review Easter egg ever.
Oh damn this is a sexy line of lenses, collect all six. Yeah I wish, but seriously looks like Zeiss is giving you 90% of the Otus for less then half the price. That is something I'll buy, seriously interested in the 85mm and the 100mm Macro.
Zeiss is very busy
Nothing wrong with manual focus. As long as the lens is made for it. Unlike some modern lenses with a tiny skirt and little throw.
Nice Speedmaster, Kai!
what a nice background music indeed (during 35mm lens)...apart from the lenses
2:41 Roy Hodgson
+googleboughtmee Lol!
I thought exactly the same
Only just down the road from me in Southwold!!
Wow, you went to Southwold! Awesome
Very nice Nikon F, I own one my self. They are indestructible.
they look great, having say so I'd expect that the colour boken won't appear in these lenses
It's so funny how kai mentions manual focus all the time. Kai should really do stand up. I think he would do well.
With the long throw and manual only focus it looks like it could be a nice cinema lens. Wonder what the price is on these and if they would be worth it compared to Canon Cine Lenses for example.
+Eric Lefebvre They're $1000 to $1800. I was saving towards cinema glass, but if they bring out a 35mm 1.4, then I'm sold on a 35/50/85 set for half the price of the Rokinon Xeems, or a quarter of the price of CP2's or CN-E's.
Gary King thats what I was thinking as well.. I use my Canon 24-70 f2.8 mostly but the throw on that is so short !
If you're happy with manual glass and want a zoom, look at for a Contax Zeiss 35-70 3.4. It's pin sharp, with great bokeh, a macro function, and a manual aperture ring too. I adapt it to Samsung NX and Canon EF and it's a stunner!
one year later, did you get the zeiss lenses?
I dont mind manual focusing at all, i have a lot of lagacy lenses, the helios 44-2, jupiter 3 and jupiter 8 and so on, all obviously manual focus, bought primarily for the bokeh and used mostly for family, mushrooms and frogs so far. Thats when i dont mind manual focusing, but i would love a nice 50mm zeiss with a 1.4 and autofocus, my fuji needs that =)
Sweet lenses! But he is right, if they are only manual focus, only the macro will sell well. I for one, don't like to manual focus most of the time because it slows me down.
This was when youtube was youtube, and life was good!
Oh, that looks beautiful!. Provided that you can learn to manual focus and know what to shoot and when, do you think this 85mm lens outperforms the canon 85/1.2 in image quality?
Why does Nikon/Canon not make a split-prism focusing screen for MF lenses? Manually focusing on an all matte screen is too difficult for moving subjects, even with focus-confirm.
On the new Zeiss 100mm F2 Micro lens, besides the rubber grip what is the difference between the old 100mm and the new Milvus for the Nikon?
The Milvus Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 is $1200. Canon 50mm f/1.2 (with auto focus) is $1350. Why would someone go with the Zeiss? Better weather sealing or something?
I was there on this beach when i was in Cambridge :)
CZARNYEU /shrug
Can't help but notice that with great optics made by Zeiss and other makers like Samyang and Rokinon, Nikon and Canon will have to upgrade their viewfinders to accommodate such lenses or just suffer from people switching over to mirrorless with adapters for them.
Like how u went all Martin Parr on the photos
Zeiss is nice.
However the Nikon-Canon monopoly in dSLR cameras doesn't want a german company to produce autofocus lenses for their cameras. Manufactures outside Japan are not allowed to create autofocus lenses for Nikon-Canon cameras.
Canon and Nikon would like to block anyone from creating autofocus lenses for their cameras. However the Japan legislation permits the Japanese Sigma and Tamron companies to sell Nikon and Canon compatible autofocus lenses.
Lenses give bigger margins for profits. For example very few buy a new dSLR camera that entered the market five years ago. That is not the case with lenses. A good lens can be sold for many years. There is no stock problem like with the camera bodies.
It is not the choice of Zeiss to produce no autofocus lenses for Nikon Canon.
Zeiss sharpness is by far the best in the market. However the lack of autofocus is a great drawback. Zeiss superiority is one of the reasons why Sony still survives in the High-end camera market.
I have a Zeiss 35mm f2.8 for my Sony a7 and I am astonished by its sharpness and quality of construction.
By the way Zeiss avoids to create lenses with stabilization. It says that stabilization deteriorates quality. I don't believe that. They just don't bother like Leica.
would be great if you reviewed lenses for astrophotography
Kai are you planning come to Oxford at some point?? Looking foreword to see your next video!!
I really wanted to see them used on the film camera
This lens won’t damage the mount on my f3 will it? It’s not too heavy? I like to use a hand strap and just hold my camera by my side
Kids are playing at the beach in swimwear and Kai is wearing jacket and beret...since we are in october I think Kai is more weather-accurate xD
Carl zeiss is the best lens in the world....!!!
So you can't de-click the aperture on the canon mount?
Hope you enjoyed Southwold Kai and indulged in a glass or two of their Adnam's ale.
Samyang bested Zeiss' 12mm f/2.8 with their Samyang 12mm f/2 which was sharper even wide open. The Zeiss did have auto focus, but still, it's 12mm, so not needed really. Now Samyang is also coming with their 21mm f/1.4, that's not just one stop brighter, but two. Not full frame though, but still :P Why did you never show the 12mm from Samyang?
+Alexander Rex Evensen Samyang have great quality/price ratio, but I absolutely don't believe that you can compare picture quality of Zeiss and Samyang.
+thePavuk In build quality, absolutely not. Image quality? Sure you can. Just check reviews for their 12mm f/2 vs. the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8. But yeah, not for all lenses, but more than one would think looking at the price of the lenses.
+Alexander Rex Evensen fuck this samyang shit - that stuff is fucking crap
Philipp Spiegl My experience tells me something else, so I'll just go by that.
+Alexander Agreed, samyang is good for the price, and their image quality is worth comparing, that's why other people compared zeiss with samyang. But maybe digitalrev guys simply did not considered/preferred to review any off-branded lens, by looking at how they reviewed tokina 11-16mm.
i dont get it manuel focus why not use the a7 systems and why does he always shoot at f8 almost every lens looks good at f8
getting the Sigma 85mm f1.4 after christmas!
same price as the 35mm f1.4 but with autofocus!
which lens is best to take a macro shot of a object atleast 4-5m away for camera
Check out how the camera DJI Osmo.
They are excellent.
I bought a nikon d3300 from these guys and I need a good video lens and a good zoom lense. Preferred for video rokinon and zoom sigma and under $500 thank you guys for the help.
Since when did digital rev do videos in the UK?
does the 85 extends when manual focusing.. I don't like the protruding crap.
I'm sure these are nice lenses and I'm sure they will have a nice price tag as well, if one is into manual lenses, you could save a lot of money and buy vintage premium lenses plausibly at %50 of what these will sell for. I myself have more manual lenses then I do auto (I do mean allot!), nothing wrong with auto, I just prefer the look they produce, the sheer weight and the aesthetically pleasing appearance, such as zebra lenses.
3 years of watching DR TV videos based in Hong Kong and then they suddenly film one less than 40 Miles away from me!
is it similar to Nikon AI-S 50mm f/1.2?
Do a bridge camera series
Zeiss Milvus 1.4 or Nikon 1.4 🤔
I'm curious, who are these lenses for? Genuine curiosity, why fo with these instead of the Rokinon or even standard Canon EF primes? Film makers maybe?
yes filmmakers
That's not spherochromatism. It's longitudinal chromatic aberration.
Spherochromatism is spherical aberration as a function of wavelength. If you'd shoot through a narrowband red filter there wouldn't be any CA but it would be less sharp than through a green one.
Been a while since I last saw a video but why is Kai in the UK now rather than Hong Kong?
where is canon strap for nikon camera?
Is Kai ever coming back to Hong Kong? I search the comments and never find answer.
Do a video about Otus as well!!!!!
Cool, but no E-mount versions? Come on, Zeiss!
+Jet Lag Quiet... You get Batis, which has AF...
+Jet Lag these are manual focus lenses, they do not care about what camera they are on, just use a lenses adapter from the canon or Nikon mount to E-Mount. As Long as the adapter was made properly this should work.
yeah we even need FE-mount!!
+lbochtler ...I know they're manual focus lenses.
I know there are adapters. It's just nice to not have to use one.
+Adam kris Lopis FE-mount (mirrorless) analog its Loxia :-)
What is the song name playing from the start? The piano one.
Will it be possible for me to use zeiss Lens for my Fujifilm X-pro???
what's the messenger bag that he is using?
These seem like amazing lenses. However these are specific purpose lenses. The price isn't over the top, but for that purpose I wouldn't buy one of these unless the job would benefit from them. That 21mm though....very exciting.
Music style credit to Philip Bloom?
Where is the Canon camera strap?
Yes, but why would someone use these fast lenses at f/8 just to be able to manual focus? That would be a waste of money. These are basically studio lenses, to be used when you have the time to go to "live view" and zoom into the image to focus accurately.
does anyone know what Stone Island Jacket Kai is wearing in this? Cheers
What about testing FOCUSING SCREEN for these Lenses???
Could it be possible to review the Voigtlander Color Skopar 28mm 2.8?
Cool reviews in general I must say as well!
Thanx.
Can you Declick the Canon Version?
Anyone know how to get those little info text things saying the aperture iso and shutter in my video?
Stone Island, Kai football hooligan confirmed
+Sophie Beaumont So far he's only torn things up in Hong Kong. If he's going to be a true Hooligan, he needs to start wrecking the UK! :)
kai where can i buy jacket and beanie ur wearing ?!?
No way Southwold!!! this is where I live!
where did you get that hat Kai?
Why is Kai in UK and separated from Lok?????
Who do you think is filming Kai?
+Bungle2010 Yup, that was why I asked the question
noob question: why do they never put autofocus in their lenses? wouldn't more people be interested in buying them?
+Andrea Parussini
It's caused by Canikon, they simply make it hard (expensive) for Zeiss, that's all.
+Andrea Parussini Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 & 85mm f/1.8
+Andrea Parussini For primary reason will be videos. I see a lot of videographers prefer manual focus. But for me as a photographer, it's just the sensation of turning your focus ring. i don't know why, but i really like MF. been MF for 5 months already in studios and concerts and i already getting the hang of it.
Jan Mendoza
MF is way better than AF even for noobs
+Andrea Parussini Some people simply like it that way :) When you shoot manually you might as well use manual focus.
Also, note how none of these lenses have incredibly long focal lengths. That makes manual focus easier because you have more DOF.
They are for a slower kind of shooting of people and landscapes. They are not for action. They are for super high quality portraits, or situations in which you can take your time to take the shot.
Will you make review of a new Pentax K3 II?
Great lenses optically but no auto focus means no fun. Most of the sample shots you took showing bokeh are out of focus, suggesting the kind of results you'd get with them. I had some extraordinary Nikon AI-s glass, flawless craftmanship but I had to sell them because I would get a lot of missed or almost useable shots.
The place looks like Brighton Beach in Melbourne
Whats the music name in this vid?
Everyone quit asking why Kai is in the UK, what the background music is, and where Alamby went! This is a camera review site! Let's concentrate on the Kennedy assassination like we are supposed to!
Which slr is that?
Are they in Australia?
oh ok thanks :)
For people who using E-mount camera.
Saving more money and get the Batis, or get the distagon.
I need that hat
