- *My very first video. (Please watch other more recent videos!) And my first video edit.
I've lived off grid for nine years, solo, in the interior of Alaska. And have loved every minute of it. I charter a helicopter for the ride in and out as access is quite difficult by any other means. When not off grid at home I work at sea so my time spent in "civilization" is very minimal. Soon as I crew change off it's back to my mountaintop home, population 1.
**Finally figured out why the first four scenes are jacked. The HDR setting with my iPhone camera. Won’t happen again…

I guess a snowblower is out 4 u , being that u were dropped there..u prolly have no access to a vehicle nor gas.
A snowblower will be needed once I get the high tunnel greenhouse up and going. It’s mostly flat in that spot and out of the wind. On top of the mountain it’s too windy so any progress made with a snowblower would be in vain. Snow drifts fill everything back in daily. I can only take a little gasoline in the helicopter basket each trip. At the most 20 gallons. No roads or gas stations where I live.
Yep u r offgrid! At least I'm near a road...I live on the transcanada trail in Ontario..Algonquin park is my neighbour..I get alot of snow but not much wind here!
yeah tell Curtis a hallo and respect form Frank in Hamburg Germany. I would like to know if your dad lifed there 365 and if he was alone or with you mum? Or was it a summer cabin?
Absolutely stunning.
Stunning in that it even looks somewhat decent. My first video edit ever, self taught on FCPX as I was making this. The first several scenes didn’t turn out very well with horrible color, HDR issue with the iPhone to FCPX format. I’ll fix that in future videos.
I'm assuming a lot of your snow depth is from drifting snow around your buildings. Would some snow fence in strategic places help control some of the drifting? Your shower house looks awesome!
It would help a bit at first. Until the snow gets about 4-5 feet deep, then no help at all.

I don’t know. Doubtful as Mt Hayes is 124 miles from me. But then again the Mt Denali summit is 57 miles from me and clearly visible. I’ll look into it.

I came over from “The Bramante Brothers” channel. They recommended your channel. I decided to start from the beginning of your videos, so I could better understand your story. I love the Alaska scenery and your pristine views are spectacular! Have too many health issues to try this way of life, but totally fascinated with those who do!

The first is still the best. I love your content. Not much talk wunderfull relaxing view- 360 Grad suround- routine hard work out and carpenter skills like a german facility manager.
Men, I cant feel how strong you are to live in such eara on a top mountain. I understand that the top hill is better because of snow monster pressures in other places. Sun is allways the best co worker with snow...melting. Today 1.12.2023 you have ca 6000 Subs. Lets see: in January 15.000! And in summer 100.000 then the hard work will create a plus income and you can fly in much more stuff you need for the homesteadt! Growing food.
A greenhouse on bear proove flocks? With an outomatic water rain system...?
On the othe side you could build a traditionell earth cellar for food storage in the future.
Then the USMC will send helicopters and fill the cellar with food for a wilderness hero!"
Thanks for the comments! If everything goes well I will accomplish a few more tasks this summer. Logistics, weather and time conspire against me all too often.
You could need a partner in mission. A mission partner but where to find? Howm you can trust in this time? How has skills and healthy body and healthy soul? You could need a budy that gets his own small cabin like Dick Proenecke but modern style. High end insolatet. Off course a Veteran endurance men. So one is allways there to prepp clean and maintaine. As a facility manager I do know how much time and aafford projects need. Besinde the fact that transport is the theme. Or you make a special summer show: You ask for support from 4 strong helpers and you invide them for 2 weeks adventure but they have to work. Other YT canals did that also with big projects. For them it would be a unic adventure a test. In summer no porblem. For you a winwin 8 more hands on deck :-) @@MountainMariner

Ed, your place is incredibly beautiful and with the auroras it is magical.
wondering what powers all your appliances and stove. Didn't see anything but have a feeling it is either propane or a generator. Just wondering.
This is the first video of your cabin I've seen. Beginning to look at the one 11 months ago and see a solar array.
So my stove/oven runs off propane. The two refrigerator/freezers run on 24volt DC. the outside silicone gel battery bank runs those. The inside lithium battery bank runs all lighting, but only when I’m home. I shut that system down when I leave. The wind turbine can be switched between those two battery banks.
Then the ATV shed has a 12volt solar system and a 1000 watt inverter. Totally isolated.
The shower sauna and workshop has a 12volt solar and wind system with a 2000 watt inverter. The solar on this will be upgraded soon. Probably in the spring. Everything I need is already on site. I just need to install it.
Hi Ed, greetings from Willow, AK. I just came across your video and enjoyed it very much. You have a very neat place there. You sure fooled the hell out of me digging those machines out and they started right up. Myself, I would buy a snowblower for that 4by or a Nodwell with a plow and make short work of that snow, lol. Are you a crabber? How long have you been in Alaska? I have been here 73 years, won't ever leave here, not even in a pine box. Winter is my favorite time of the year. Are you in the North Borough? Flying out by helicopter can't be cheap but, it's worth it. I have subscribed and liked and will catch all your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Not a crabber or fisherman and I’ve been here since 2014. At that time I was working on a 360’ icebreaker in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. I’m in my own borough and town. I call it Edmundville Alaska. Population 1. I’m the mayor, police chief and fire chief. Won 100% of the votes last election, the people love me!

Nothing beats the old metal shovel. The plastic ones break and then what? Gotta wait for our next flight into town! For us we have 2 metal ones that last almost forever, and then about 73 plastic ones! Was that Will in the heli? Definitely a familiar sight having a chopper land by a cabin.
Agree 100%, aluminum shovel with a D handle is the way to go. I have a new handle waiting to go on my prized shovel but I lost the rivet. Another trip to Moore’s to sort that out I guess. Plastic snow shovels are for amateurs! Good idea for a video! Snow shovel 101. I do believe that was Will flying me in that day.

Thanks! I’m off the vessel tomorrow after doing my 30 days at work and looking forward to my 30 days off. Hopefully the weather won’t delay my helicopter ride to the mountains. Should be able to post a video on Friday or Saturday if all goes well.

This cabin is a bit unusual with the many large windows. Most cabins here are small and dark. My cabin is small too but the light makes it feel much larger. Thanks for watching and good luck on your search!

I’m in town for usually less than 24 hours. I spend very little time in “civilization.” And yes this is my only home.

It’s not so bad. I missed many good northern light shows this year since I worked over so much. And unfortunately my time off at home was usually cloudy.

My snow shovel has moved more than 1 “F ton” of snow this winter. Many, many F tons if I had to guess.

Found your channel randomly and subscribed. Decided to go back to the beginning and check them all out. Great isolated location! I worked in the marine salvage business for 50+ years; starting out as a commercial diver. Like you, did a 180 and living rather remotely. Thanks for your channel - from Hells Canyon, Frank.
That’s a tough gig, marine salvage. But someone’s gotta do it! Did you ever do on-call emergency diving for commercial marine companies? (Diving in port mostly to remove debris from propellers and thrusters or inspect for damage?) Lots of rope and tire removal from thrusters and propellers.
All my diving was for commercial marine companies all over the country. Did big ship casualty work worldwide - vessel groundings, wreck removals, ship fires, ocean barges, tankers, cargo ships, tugs, commercial fishing vessels, etc…. As an older guy, I still miss the challenges and excitement.

Unfortunately working too. Which keeps me from living year round in my special spot. If I had things my way I’d never leave my mountain. I’d pay a local from the nearest town do my grocery shopping and supplies then take it all to the helicopter taxi service for delivery to me. Working on that, not too far off in the future….

I agree. Sorry. It won’t happen again. (on camera) This was my very first video edit ever and I cringe at watching it. Not much better yet but I’ve been learning as much as I can about editing. Future shutter removal shots will only have me pulling the northwest shutter off and the reflection of the northern countryside will be in the window glass.
@@MountainMariner personally I liked it, it helped introduce how many windows you have in the place, that and all the shoveling you have to do.
Having a remote Alaska cabin of our own one can really relate to all the work it takes to go out and enjoy the cabin, being flown in sure is a time saver.
.. you could use a longer handle on that shovel. 😉
@@MountainMariner I think the shutter removal time was just enough time for people to enjoy the different views from each side of your porch. Excellent job!
