Thanks for this; I have that exact starter but decided to not install it due to the bolts not lining up, and bought an NA starter; now I know I can put the NB starter in if/when I want to!
Thanks for your videos (megasquirt tuning was quite helpful + andy whittles videos). My 140k NA starter has been pretty weak to start and finally required a love tap with a steel pipe and hammer to work again. Having a low mileage NB2 motor from an automatic car gave me a 50k old OEM starter laying around. 1.75 hrs later i had the NA8 starter out, NB2 starter in, and shes cranks wonderfully.
hey I have a 90 miata I upgrade to a 97 1.8 Mazda crate motor with a begi/garret turbo kit I e upgrade almost everything and I can never get a good starter or alternator. now that it's been 2 year how has the NB upgrade work for you
Perfect! No problems at all since install. I had the transmission out and the bolts were still at spec torque, two bolts rather than three for a regular NA starter are holding up fine.
Yes, the NB starter is for a 99-2005 but can fit in a 90-97 as well. The NC starter wound be needed for a 2006. But the process is pretty close I think.

Yep still going strong, no issues with it loosening up. I've known a few people to do this.

Ha, mine was right at 140k too when I swapped it out. Thanks for the feedback and glad the videos helped out!
Thank you for this video. Yes, you don't need to pop the hood to do this but opening it allows more light into engine bay.
Mazda kept with the British roadster theme with all the built in rust proofing
lol, agreed
I had my NA Miata starter with 1 bolt and a welded plate to hold it up
Helpful! Good lighting and directions!
Sorry, had an editing mistake and re-uploaded the video again.

and did you have a 1.8 or a 1.6 motor you installed the nb1 starter on
@@Sim_ulation7 still going great! It gives me a stronger start than the original NA starter. No issues with the two bolt vs three bolts issue.
@@Sim_ulation7 it's a 1.8
I installed (sort of) a mk2 starter on my 97 mk1 today and one of the bolt holes doesn’t line up on the starter.
Yes you will need to use only two, not three. This is fine because the new starter is lighter. I've had two bolts for years with no issues.
@@OGPedXing brilliant just what I did earlier!
In other words you never watched the video 😂😂😂
Can I put a NB starter on my ‘91 1.6 miata?
Yep, works fine. You will only use two bolts rather than three but this is not a problem. My 94 is the same for this.
Can be done with ratcheting end wrenches. This is not q quick project. Can take all day
How’s the starter holding up now?
Perfect! No problems at all since install. I had the transmission out and the bolts were still at spec torque, two bolts rather than three for a regular NA starter are holding up fine.
Is this the same as the nb?
The process is almost identical when doing it on an nb chassis. Although on nb all the bolt holes will line up correctly, unlike NA!
so if i have a 1990 miata i can do thos
Yep! Works fine. You will only use two out of the three bolt points and you can not use the bracket.
Is the 2006 different?
Yes, the NB starter is for a 99-2005 but can fit in a 90-97 as well. The NC starter wound be needed for a 2006. But the process is pretty close I think.
is this a 1.6 or 1.8?
This is for a 1994 1.8.
so the starter sound, sounds now like an nb? i know it's weird but i hate the na starter sound🙈
Lol, you're not alone. A lot of people think the na sounds kind of weezy. Yes basically sounds like an NB now.
niiice to know😁 thanks for the video😎🤘 i've search't a long time about the "starter swap"
