- Pride month has arrived! But while the progress made with LGBTQIA+ rights thus far deserves a resounding “yes kween!”, there’s nothing to be proud about when it comes to the treatment of intersex people. If you want to be a true ally, the intersex community needs your support too!

Thank you. I'm a survivor of coercive hormone therapy and surgical mutilation. The condition runs in my family, and the stigma is immense even among ourselves. My mum didn't support my refusal to provide "informed" consent at 14, and instead joined the doctor in overruling me. I consented to a surgery, and woke up having had another one. No admission of the additional incision on my operative or post-operative reports. The surgeon refused to ever see me again. It took another surgery, years later to find out what have been done to me. Only 2 countries in the world outlaw infant genital mutilation on intersex infants, Malta and Portugal. That number needs to grow.
I'm so sorry that was done to you. If you don't mind me asking, how do you live now? Do you identify with a binary (man/woman) gender?
@@mothboy420I transitioned a long time ago by withholding my VSC from a trans service so I would never have to go back to an intersex service. The mental health team had no idea, mercifully none of the surgeons included it in my reports so I could continue my journey without having to switch clinics.
I'm generally assumed endosex and binary, and that's ok, but I'm agender.
I don't recommend giving the 'Samantha Bee' commenter your contact information. There are a couple of red flags, including the account creation date. I reported it as likely impersonation.
You are sadly not alone in this. Many Intersex Folks end up receiving lifelong corrective surgeries and care to correct the problems associated with the initial surger(ies) forced on them as infants or children. Others have difficulty PROVING that they were exploited by7 the medical system against their will, and therefore are denied treatment by medical insurance corporations. In fact, this kind of situations can rip a family apart, or cause the Intersex Person to be excommunicated from their family unit when they do not fit the expectations for behaviour assigned to them via those surgeries in their youth, ESPECIALLY so for religiously centered families, and more so if that family's religious beliefs involve fundamentalism of any sort. These kind of external and internal conflicts for Intersex Persons result oftentimes in myriad mental health conditions and suicidal ideation and/or attempts
Maybe some people will want to watch this. An interview with an intersex person from Vice. Not to take away from the OP's own experiences, but I just thought I'd post it since people seem interested in an Intersex person talking about their experiences.

Trans kids: I want a gender confirmation surgery
GOP: NO!
Intersex children: I don't want a gender confirmation surgery
GOP: NO!
Heck, trans kids just want puberty delaying drugs. Doctors usually won't do anything irreversible like hormone therapy until you're a legal adult, or old enough to be legally emancipated. They don't do confirmation surgery until your body has finished growing out of safety concerns, generally only after you have reached legal adulthood, though there have been some very rare cases with extenuating circumstances doing surgery on kids in their late teens.
Not even, trans kids that are a ways away from puberty transition by changing their name, pronouns, hair, and clothing. Then puberty blockers that are safe, reversible, and literally developed to delay early puberty in cisgender children are discussed when they start showing signs of puberty.
@@BeastGuardian very true, yet the Arkansas law says you can't even use blockers. From 12 you can use blockers, 16 you can use hormones, from 18 and at least 2 years you can totally transition. At least that's our law (the Netherlands). I think that's quite reasonable.
Funny, that. I'd love to ask Rand Paul about intersex genital mutilation and infant circumcision, since he said the phrase "genital mutilation" in practically every sentence at a hearing for Rachel Levine. I had the opportunity to ask a hostile transphobe in another comments section that very question when he used the same phrase for gender confirmation surgery, and he told me I was "insane" to compare them. (For the record, I don't compare them, since gender confirmation surgery is actually a medical treatment and done with *informed consent.*)
@@Psychwriteify I have a feeling that most people who scream about the evils of puberty blockers have no idea that precocious puberty exists (I just visited an endocrinologist friend and noted a book on the subject on her shelf).
I'm Trans. I stand by letting folks make informed decisions when they themselves are adults. For pretty clear reasons.
But, also. Maybe we should destigmatize things so folks aren't forced/ pressured into those decisions
I agree! Stop recommending/allowing the surgeries without informed consent. But it's at least as important to remove the stigma, or the kids will have different trauma issues.
I champion access to menstrual hygiene options, and it's appalling how much maltreatment of girls persists despite legal prohibitions (google "Chhaupadi" for one example). We *have* to discuss the uncomfortable issues openly to reduce the taboo until it's finally eliminated.
Don't just destigmatize. You need a change of law that you can legally be intersex on documents like birth certificates, passports etc. Eg. Australia and New Zealand or Germany have such options.
Maybe replace 'when they're adults' with 'when they're old enough to decide'. Since some trans youth are making decisions about their body even prior to puberty.
@@naysneedle5707 define "When they are old enough"...
@@jacobodom8401 Well, there was a trans girl in my daughter's class at intermediate school, so she obviously made her decision prior to starting intermediate (age 10 or 11). Not being trans myself or knowing any trans people personally, I can only speculate that it probably varies from person to person? I think any decisions about hormones or hormone blockers need to be made in consultation with suitably experienced medical professionals - but not necessarily at a prescribed age and certainly not compulsorily delayed until adulthood, as having to go through the 'wrong' puberty would have extremely damaging consequences for many trans youth.
Yep made me cry. Thank you for giving a voice to this. I am someone with long term pain. I have an autoimmune condition that likes to attack scar tissue. So my modified genitals are often attacked. It's torture. I dread this more than a flare in my face. The worst is of course everything at once but it would've been nice to choose.
I don't know if it'll help but I've found some cool seed and beauty tricks recently. Things like homemade masks (like facial mud masks recipes) made with home made ingredients and used on scar tissue really help.
You can make flax seed gel and chia seed gel and use that in a skin treatment. I'm trying to remember which seed is best for anti inflammatory purposes. Aw I've gone hopelessly blank. 😩
Look into it though? Home made skin products okay? Lots of vitamins, nutrients and cheap seeds and calmer skin. Please look into it. 💕
Add ground turmeric and other anti inflammatory ingredients to your chosen recipes. Good luck. It's okay to use your home made lotions down there. (Maybe something that doesn't stain like turmeric though.)
By the way I'm doing this because of a similar condition minus the surgery which... yeah... I'm going without for fear of angry scars.
Do you have a channel? I don't mind popping back with info if you're interested (and likely fairly broke like me and can't afford the good skin products).
@@wiz9496 WHAT oh my god you're terrible
@@wiz9496 Since you don't seem to understand context, their genitals were modified without their consent when they were a baby, as discussed in the segment. Not that it would make what you're saying ok if they were trans.
surprised responsible and liable med professionals would do such a surgery until after a person is fully grown; they MUST know there is a risk there, besides the important consent factor.
Practice these phrases, potential parents:
"Is there a non-surgical option?"
"What are the consequences if we do nothing? What are the consequences if we wait?"
You can always seek a second opinion, and remember, YOU are your child's greatest advocate. Don't be afraid to stand up to a doctor and say no.
Thank you for this. A long time friend of mine had an intersex surgery when a child, forced om her by a mother who was appalled that her daughter was not perfect. She suffered with the side effects all of her life. This needs to end.
Here's some statistics about the United States: There are roughly 335 million people currently living here, the population is roughly 51% female and 49% male, 62% Caucasian and 38% Minority, 23% under 18 and 77% over 18, 75% Christian and 25% Non-Christian, the average life expectancy is just under 79 years, with 76 for men and 81 for women, there are about 12 births for every 9 deaths, about 8% served in the military, 7% are openly LGBT+, 2% are in prisons, and, most importantly, exactly 100% of us are human beings who should be protected by the rights guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution including the right to vote, yet sadly not all of our elected politicians on both the federal level and across state levels see it that way.
Awesome comment. 💚
About 0.5%, about 1/2000 people, are intersex, but misclassified as male or female. If that holds, over 1.5 million Americand are intersex.
And now to make it even more political, let's find the same statistics but then government personnel, especially elected or chosen high officials... I think it will be a total misrepresentation of the US people.
I totally agree, though I do not believe 75% are Christian. I think 25% are registered as other religion, and by default the rest gets assigned christianity. There's a lot of non-religious people not taken into consideration there. They do a similar thing when they assign federal money for religious groups in my country and a lot of us is registered in the church as a default, as a cultural thing, without being personal christian.
@@renatheer Yeah. Especially in cases where someone is registered under Christianity as a child.
Thank you SO much for speaking about this! As an intersex person this is a serious problem that affects my community!
Careful, Lissy. The "Samantha Bee' reply here is from an account created only today. Red Flag.
@@tReadYT Thanks! I had a feeling that was the case though. Reported the comment!
Thank you for giving a platform to this! People, let's not do what amounts to cosmetic surgery on *literal infants* anymore, okay? Especially on such intimate areas that can have such a defining role in how you see yourself. Circumcision, intersex surgery, all of it. Until the kid can tell you who they are and what they want, just leave it alone.
I agree so much. It will be years before a child can understand, let alone decide. But one's gender identity and sexuality are such monumental facets of adulthood, that we transgress terribly when we trespass on somebody's agency in forming those aspects of themselves. Removal of an extra toe wouldn't have nearly the same scale of repurcussions.
aaaaaand there it is. i knew someone was going to turn this into a dig at circumcision. and cue 100,000 youtube keyboard warriors screaming at me for "mutilating" my child.
@@dietotaku you inserted yourself into this discussion. Sounds like you might have some guilt over your decision since you know circumcision is unnecessary surgery.
@@tree2me Sounds like that to me as well. Although I too was expecting the mutilation of male-assigned infants to be mentioned in the comments, since if one is opposing genital mutilation of one category of children, it is natural to express one's opposition to all such depredations. Speaking of which, it would be just peachy if the U.S. and Britain actually enforced their laws against mutilating female-assigned children. (Disclaimer for TERFs and other right-wingers: a consenting adult choosing gender confirmation surgery is *not* mutilation, because of the "consenting" part and because it is actually a beneficial treatment.)
By the way, I'm also against removing an extra toe, providing it isn't causing any trouble, although I agree with the comment above that the repercussions are less severe. And for that matter, I'm against infant ear piercing, although many people choose to have their ears pierced . Just *leave other people's bodies alone.* If you think you own your child's body, then I refer you to Khalil Gibran: poets.org/poem/children-1
@@andrewkohler3707 I have just seen your reply to another comment with '100 % ' Great minds think alike.' ;-)
Weird how much they say you can't choose your gender and yet here are parents choosing their children's gender.
If God doesn't make mistakes, then "deformities" wouldn't exist.
Let's not even get into the whole circumcision thing.
Weird, I thought they said that gender affirming medical treatment was child abuse.
Those were the various thoughts I had during this segment.
I remember watching a day time talk show when I was younger (in the 90's) where people who were given gender surgery as babies to "fix" them. A lot of them talked about how they did feel like the gender their parents chose for them.
Did the parents choose?
I attended a conference a few years back one of the issues discussed was the number of states where an intersex infants "gender " was decided by the doctor and they were not even required to inform the parents.
My state was one such state.
That knowledge really expanded my understanding
No, let's please get into the circumcision thing. Genital mutilation is genital mutilation.
@@andrewkohler3707 Except where it's surgically necessary intervention, apparently. However, that's rare, and circumcision definitely isn't...
Just saying that like there are some people who CANNOT get vaccinated, there are apparently some infants that require intervention or risk of death (I do believe most would choose mutilation were they able to make the choice at that point...)
I was born with deformed legs and had many surgery done when I was a baby. When I was 7 the doctors wanted to cut off my legs and give me plastic ones. I stopped eating and talking for many weeks until my parents asked me what I wanted. To keep my legs was what I wanted. The feeling of having complete no control over my body has effects on humans. I ended up in a wheelchair my whole life and I have raised two sons on my own, two different fathers because I have bad choice in men. I'm now 46 and I don't regret my decision when I was 7. My body my choice.
I'm glad you were able to choose for yourself 🙂

I'm all for culture but ALL non (life) treatening circumcissions on non consenting children. should be illegal. No one should have the right to make such important decisions about your own body but you.
I took a Gender Studies course at Texas Christian University (yes, it's a real course, and no, it's not as useless as Conservatives think), and I read in our textbook at 1 point that roughly 7% of the U.S. population is openly in the LGBT+ community, but only a fraction of them are actually in the T or I categories, so even for Republican politicians and Conservative/FOX News hosts (Tucker Carlson in particular), their anti-transgender propaganda makes no logical sense.
That is the best comment I have every seen on any platform for transgender rights. I really hope a lot of people read this and thank you for posting it.

Related to this is any and all cultural/religious surgeries on kids like FGM and MGM.
Its disgusting what we do to peoples bodies without their consent and just think next to nothing about it!
100%!!!!!
Exactly
Male circumcision is an important religious ritual for many. It is much easier and safer to perform it on infants than on adults. Parents have the right to raise their children how they choose (within obvious limits). By the way, a lot more damage is done psychologically by parents than by physical surgeries. Should we require all parents to take classes on proper parenting (and go to therapy) in order to raise children the way somebody else wants?
@@KingoftheJuice18 Using a magic man in the sky as a reason to slice parts of a child off without their consent is sick. Do you hear yourself when you make these excuses?! How deep in this cultural indoctrination are you that you think its normal?!
And no, parents do not or should not have the right to raise their child 'how they choose' for the reason you admit in brackets: within obvious limits. One of those limits ought to be destroying forever, a childs body! That you don't even see it as wrong is proof of how insidious this practice is in normalising itself.
Are you or are you not against FGM? Tell me that. I dare you to be consistent because chances are, you can't bring yourself to be. These are exactly the same thing. Parents doing things to helpless children because "cUlTurE" and "rEliGiOn."
Oh, and your "more damage is done psychologically" thing, is a deeply sinister and troubling attempt at derailing the conversation. I think you need to rethink how seriously and thoroughly you take this issue.
@@KingoftheJuice18 Does saying something has "special religious significance" to me give me the right to mutilate another person’s body? Is it really that easy?
Yes 100% people should go to classes and therapy prior to reproducing.
In America even _regular_ boys have their genitals "fixed" for cosmetic reasons.
Men who were could sue their parents.
Yes, that should be illegal as well. 🖖🏽 Some day.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't for cosmetic reasons, though. While the actual scientific benefits of male circumcision are debated, the reasons behind many parents' decisions to have their sons get the procedure weren't frivolous. They were based on what they thought was sound medical info.
@@MushiePuppet17 Sure, the way denying women the right to vote also was based on "sound info" regarding their intelligence.

'yes' "only a binary of XY and XX?" 'yes' "so where does that leave people who biologically fall outside that binary? Do they just not get a gender? Or do we force them to comply within our binary system? The world is not black and white." I feel that's a reason why pride is rainbow. It's living in color. It's seeing the spectrum of grey's in life as the colors they truly are. It was black and white. Now we are evolving. We are seeing the colors of Love

I think it comes down to bias that 'normal' is 'healthy,' and that's why we should talk about intersex people more.
Thank you for speaking on this!
This was very informative thank you.
Such a strong and switched-on advocate for LGBTIQ+ from Day One.
Love this, now do circumsicion next!
I would really love to get the full episodes here I really enjoy your show
The most beautiful woman I ever met was intersexed. Her name was Lilith. She was from Tobago and she believed in the Goddess in the Hindu practice. She was 5 ' 4 and drop dead gorgeous! In our intimate moments she had both parts and she was wonderful! 💜
I am upset that this issue has not been dealt with at the same time as other issues that plague society, Gender based discrimination, like all discrimination is abhorrent. If you are born this way, express yourself.
A Dinwoodie Lounge shoutout! I'm DYING!!! Hi from Edmonton
This video added to my understanding of what it means to be human! Thank you!
This piece really generated some questions for me. Do Canadians think the name 98 degrees has something to do with boiling water? Are they billed as 36 degrees when they perform in Canada? I have questions that need answers
End male circumcision as well. Dude, just wash better.
I have mosaic kleinfelters, im intersex and proud of it
"I see the appeal." Good one Sam!
Thank you for this.
The same argument can be made for circumcision.
And that group is well known and the DNA is well known
I love how people will fight against trans people who WANT to have surgery, and yet at the same time, be more than happy to perform essentially the same type of surgery on non-consenting children for no medical reason whatsoever.
I'm sorry Sam, I can't let you get away with that banana joke.
One hospital? That's crazy.
No circumcisions, let the boy decide later! Did that hospital stop circumcisions?
Thnx 4 the info. I didn't know about it until I saw this video.
I don’t see how things are going to change when gender reveal parties are the rage. 😞
I know, right? Naive, overly idealistic me originally thought that gender reveal parties were celebrations for people coming out as trans.
@@Newfiecat I wish that was the case
I was circumcised, so yeah I think all unnecessary surgery at infancy should be banned intersex or not. Why do doctors like mutilated genitals so much?
Ha ha, I’ve been to a lot of shows at the Dinwoodie lounge at the University of Alberta in Edmonton Canada. I doubt 98 degrees ever performed there, lol. Love the obscure reference!
Thank you!

I definitely agree that you should have the right to do surgeries you want instead of parents and medical professionals choosing for you. For example circumsision
I luv u Sam. RUclips has messed with my viewing because I don't have the latest OS. Or something. But, whatever. I've been drinking.
Sam Bee, I have taken town my email (just because) but will help out however I can.
Stupidity hurts people.
Great and all so IMPORTANT
One of the tv news magazines like 60 minutes did a segment on this in the 90's. Most males in my demographic were circumcised when I young. Not a huge deal for me. This is something that qualifies for mutilation charges.
I want Samantha Bee and Ben Shapiro to have a boxing match
Along the lines of allowing people to choose whether or not to have "corrective surgery" if they are intersex, should we not also ban non medically necessary male circumcision? Shouldnt cis boys be allowed to be a part of that conversation as well?
Side note, female circumcision is not circumcision, it is genital mutilation and beyond question it should be banned.
Folks who oppose gender assignment surgery for intersex infants generally also oppose any other sort medically unnecessary surgery for those who cannot consent.
@@beth8775 oh thats good to know. Thank you!
This is the craziest thing I ever heard. So babies are capable for making their own decisions?
