Video notes: - Build article with lots of details and why I did this or that: jayscustomcreations.com/2018/02/a-hickory-woodworking-workbench/ - Yes, there is a misspelled word in the beginning. I've always sucked at spelling and there is no spell check in Premiere Pro. Oh, well....whatcha think of the workbench? - A leg vise and dog holes will be added. - I wanted to use clear Danish oil for the finish but didn't have any on hand like I thought I did. I just used mineral oil to make the grain pop. - The completed bench has a volume of about 70 board feet according to SketchUp. I'd say I had about 30% waste cutting around big knots and cracks. - A workbench is made to be used. I don't care if it's ugly. The half lap joints naturally prevent racking. Add glue to the joint and use the screws to act as clamps while the glue dries. When the joint is closed and the glue is dried, why even take the time to remove the screws and add dowels? Then it is purely cosmetic reasons. If that were the case I'd build it out of curly maple and sapele with string inlay. I'd rather build the bench and use it to make nice stuff. I'm not saying I'd never build a nice, pretty workbench but that's not my goal here. - Have a great day!
Jay Bates - Woodworking Videos I was going to ask what type of finish you used, because it looked like baby oil! Glad I took the liberty to read your comment! Even though it’s built to be used and you went for the “less than aesthetic” look, it still looks great. 👍🏼
Jay Bates - Woodworking Videos well that's my question answered. About the screws of course. I was wondering why but as you say, a bench is made to be used!
Wow! it is even more gorgeous in this than the photos I've been seeing on your Instagram! Nice job with the selection...I like how the sapwood is just weaved here and there throughout! That's one of my favorite parts about hickory.
Nice job getting most of the pale bits of hickory in the center of the top. Nice "racing stripe" when it is done. Love the head scratching bit also there as you're trying to get it on the outfeed table. HEAVY!
Love this bench. Your pine bench was amazing and looked great but this new bench is so beautiful! Your craftsmanship is always a treat to watch. Thanks for sharing another great build!
I know you're interested in video style feedback. I like the no-narration style of this video. I think it works in order to keep what was obviously a big project consumable in a single sitting. I do also like your narrated videos. And the direct address videos... I appreciate the variety and your willingness to constantly try new things. And the production value is off the charts, as always.
That's one of my favorite things about Jay's channels! He makes it all seem so much more approachable. Of course his educational style is a big factor as well!
Normally I'm not a huge fan of all fast-forward videos, but I think you hit a really good balance on showing what needed to be shown and cutting out the fluff. Great finished product too!
Glad I checked out the write up to see why you used the auger bit instead of a router. Variety is the spice of life, sometimes it's fun to do things a little different.
When cutting the ladies and tablets on the table saw, I like your me this of sliding the piece over while still engaging the teeth of the blades so you know exactly where the cut line is going to be. Great idea! Think I'll have to borrow that one from you! Great job and awesome video as always! Thanks for the videos! I have been gleaning a lot from them! Keep up the great work and God bless!
Awesome build! I love the attention to detail :) You show that you really care and want it done the right way. I can appreciate that. Good work! Keep it up.
when Jimmy gets board with the axe nerds he moves to the guns hahha I LOVE IT!! turned out beautiful when i seen the instagrham pics i couldnt wait for the video to drop. much love Jimmy

Beautiful project, the best! Congratulations! Regards!
You've come a long way young man.....I enjoy watching the journey. Sure looks like a strong bench, now I will wait patiently to see what you make ON it.
That was a lot of work. Glad you had a bit of help from your minions ;D. Get yourself a bottle jack. Great for that little bit of assistance in lifting things. Beautiful result.
Super nice. I love the look of hickory and what a good material for a bench. I have never been able to tune my veritas low angle plane good enough to plane it though. I either skip over or dig in.
Yup. HIckory doesn't like hand tools. The top of the bench is full of small tearout spots here and there where the grain changes direction. It's impossible to get it perfectly smooth with the tools I have. That's OK though. I'm sure whatever project I make on it won't complain that the work surface has a little tearout :)
What a beautiful workbench, I kind of hope you do decide to sell it as I would love to have it. Loved the the hammer time break made me laugh out loud. Also love your flags, Go Lions!
Nice bench Jay! I have just designed a very similar bench using dimensional lumber but I have the legs inset 1.5" from the edge so I can clamp anywhere along the edges... this video shows me an order of operations of the build I am going to do so thanks!
Very nice work Jay, that one turned out better looking then store bought! I hope you remembered to chamfer the bottom of the legs at the feet to reduce splintering and chip out!

But if there were infinite idiots in infinite universes, would there still be one video? :P
That thing is Awesome Jay!!
Jay Bates - Woodworking Videos well that's my question answered. About the screws of course. I was wondering why but as you say, a bench is made to be used!
