That is the most beautiful leg vise I've ever seen. The jumbled grain in that piece of hickory was a great choice, and oiling it brought out the beauty of the piece. Love your simple solution for adjusting the foot of the vise.
Great video. I just bought the Yost screw... which came with no instructions. And using a Chris Schwarz book... which also lacks details about mounting the vise screw. Found a bunch of RUclips videos on using the screw... but you are the ONLY one who actually seemed to know what he was doing! THANKS. And now I'm thinking of using the wedge, as that seems easy to use and adjust. (Alas, your hickory does look a lot nicer than my workbench. :-)
"The best wood to use is the wood you have available." Simple but yet very effective and true advice!!! Really nice work bench and innovative ideas for the vice. Thanks Jay!
I couldn’t have said it better myself. The video of the actual bench build put me over the edge. So many folks fussing about him not replacing or “at least” covering the screws. Those kinds of comments require a lot of arrogance and thoughtlessness to make.
Someday Jay, someone is going to look at this beautiful bench with the patina given to it by the craftsman who built it with awe and wonder just what stories it could tell if it could talk. Beautifully done.
I sure am glad I waited until the end of the video. I had to double my anxiety meds for stressing over the screws and blue paint. WHEW! Great job and this is the bench I'm building.
Your articulation is so precise and clear. You explain things so thoroughly without pontificating. I'll never be a woodworking in the traditional sense, but I still gain useful knowledge from your videos. Thanks, Jay
The handle hardware looks so much better in black...I agree! Love how you put it about the dowels you substituted for the screws..."and now you'll never see them again." ha ha. Great video, Jay!
What he was saying is that no one will ever see the holes screws or dowel wise, like he said in his southern yellow pine woodworking bench, I guess he got some comments about how the screws were keeping some people up at night, but it shouldn’t matter because, they will never ever see them.
You know your audience well. The blue hardware was making me anxious, and then when you revealed the black painted footage, I felt a disproportionately large sense of relief. Thanks for the great video.
Jay that Hickory has some wicked grain in it..Great job. This spring I'm going to try and make a bench like this. I'm a beginning woodworker. I seen one of your vids back when you were at the apartment complex and you got me started on woodworking. Being an Amputee and in a wheelchair your vids got me through the 8 months I was in the hospital. So Thank you Jay...
Thank you for sharing your gardens. I have enjoyed the journey and have learned so much. Working in my gardens is a labor of love. The benches are absolutely beautiful. Great space to relax and enjoy all of your hard work.
When all the rest of RUclips is spending tons of time and money building torsion boxes, MFTs, and adding Benchcrafted Leg vice$, it is really refreshing to see such a simply built, beautiful, functional bench. And the choochoo at 12:30 really had me glad that I was not drinking coffee - I would have spewed all over! :-D
As you were carrying the slab to the bench, it looked pretty heavy. Then you rolled it over and my eyes popped out of my head. It It appears that it was nearly 3" thick!! Your a beast 👍👍👍
You are so detailed in your explanations and thinking. What a beautiful mind. Seriously. Don’t lose that! Amidst a world where stupidity seems comenplace, maybe even “cool”, I like coming here to gain in my intellect :)
This might be the most beautiful work bench I have seen! I think/thought walnut would be my choice of wood but after seeing the hickory I am rethinking it all. Amazing job thanks for sharing! The things people loose sleep over never cease to amaze me
I have just recently gotten into woodworking and this is one of the first projects on my list. I've watched several videos on making a leg vise and it amazes me seeing the beauty you have created here. This video is 2 years old and I have not seen another video that even compares to this build. I will give credit to Rex Krueger. His video on making the cheap version of the leg vise out of pine is what led me to your channel. Keep up the great work as I binge watch your videos.
I'm laughing about the dowels and screws a bit more than I think I should. Anyway, I enjoy watching your videos. They are always fun! Thanks for sharing!
Lmao!! "I don't have enough aspirin for that!" Always enjoy your videos Jay. Thanks for putting all that additional work into making them. Always detailed and informative.
Very nice bench Jay! I'm disappointed in so many people being negative about such trivial matters. I enjoy your videos & projects. Keep up the good work!
It’s funny you made this video now...just last week I ordered one of these screws to make an end vice on one of Steve Ramsey’s basic workbenches I did a couple weeks ago.
Nice! I saw some English styles that add an apron on the vice side to install dog holes so hold fasts can work with the leg vice to secure long pieces to the side of the bench.
That is an excellent idea. It occurred to me that for your "dowel issue" you could have used a piece of 3/4 inch cold rolled steel. You won't flex that and it could have remained on the outside of the leg. Just a thought. I realize this was 5 years ago.
Good on ya mate, when I made mine after seeing your other bench build I followed your lead and used softwood on the top but it hasn’t worked out too well I’m going to have to inlay some hardwood.
Wow. Lovely piece of wood ,there. The only trouble watching your videos, is that I become really envious of all the serious tools you have at your disposal (must have cost a pretty penny), and also the ease with which nice woods seem to be available in the US. Just starting out in woodworking (at age 62!), and am mainly interested in guitar building myself, so a long way behind, and also as i have moved to rural France, it is doubly difficult to find the sort of stuff you guys seem to be able to lay your hands on. Oh well, i have time on my hands, and Google to assist my searches! But, as i have commented on before, I have already learnt a lot from your excellent videos. Keep up the good work
I skimmed through all 431 comments, and I'm surprised nobody asked yet whether the old pine bench is nicer to work on. I've heard others complain about bench tops being too hard, vibration, and rebounding. No doubt this one is absolutely gorgeous, especially that chop - wow! Thanks for your videos, I've been trying to decide on a bench design for my new house, and will be drawing from some of your ideas with this. I especially like how you talked through why you made the choices you made and how you arrived st the decision
I haven't went through all the comments so someone else may have already said this but couldn't the dowel go through the leg? Then you wouldn't need the extra piece to hold it in place, it wouldn't bend like it did on the outside and it wouldn't be in the way like it is on the inside. Great simple design, love it!
My boy started laughing extremely hard and I'm laughing now don't know why but he says old man what is he rubbing on his chin man now get me we love your channel so wow we might have to visit so that you can give him some guff if you know what I mean man I'm still laughing so hard thumbs up my FRIEND remember that this is terribly funny your one of his mentors everyday he watches you he's 8 and already creating and you are the reason now that's awesome
Funny thing was, my Dad’s leg vise made 360• swings and that was a lot of fun ( mischief?). You brought sweet childhood memories to this 70-year old and got his inspired to build one, and an improved one! Thanks
The train whistle was one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time. Still chuckling. Thank you for the laugh!

Definitely something I need to keep in mind.
It is a shame that so many viewers have so many issues with trivial matters. It's a wonder how they can manage in such an imperfect world. Danny
Indeed.
I love this comment honestly. I've asked myself this so many times...
Yes especially when they take the time to make and edit the video, which is a lot of increased time for the project. All free of charge.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. The video of the actual bench build put me over the edge. So many folks fussing about him not replacing or “at least” covering the screws. Those kinds of comments require a lot of arrogance and thoughtlessness to make.
Well said Daniel.
Awesome as always, Jay. Glad you painted the hardware black, looks so much better.
Thank God! I'm glad you painted the hardware black! The blue was stressing me out on that awesome looking bench. Lol Good job!
Someday Jay, someone is going to look at this beautiful bench with the patina given to it by the craftsman who built it with awe and wonder just what stories it could tell if it could talk. Beautifully done.
Thank you :)
Your leg vise looks nicer than my dining table 👍 Beautiful work
"... I don't have enough aspirin for that" Quote of the week!
I sure am glad I waited until the end of the video. I had to double my anxiety meds for stressing over the screws and blue paint. WHEW! Great job and this is the bench I'm building.
Very nicely done. Just what I needed to see before I replace my nearly 40 year old table made from 2x6 construction lumber.
Bruce A. Ulrich There’s that... 😆
What he was saying is that no one will ever see the holes screws or dowel wise, like he said in his southern yellow pine woodworking bench, I guess he got some comments about how the screws were keeping some people up at night, but it shouldn’t matter because, they will never ever see them.
nathancd got that. That’s why I said it was funny that he went ahead and mentioned it. ;)
You know your audience well. The blue hardware was making me anxious, and then when you revealed the black painted footage, I felt a disproportionately large sense of relief. Thanks for the great video.

That's one beautiful workbench. BTW, I loved the train sound effects. I actually laughed out load.
You need to get out more.
Thank you for sharing your gardens. I have enjoyed the journey and have learned so much. Working in my gardens is a labor of love. The benches are absolutely beautiful. Great space to relax and enjoy all of your hard work.
Prob the prettiest leg vise I’ve ever seen. Look at those grain patterns!
that hickory is great. too nice to work on. beautiful build!
Covering the screw holes is the cherry on the sundae! Looks fantastic!
I thought the old workbench was a thing of beauty. This one is even better.
Amidst a world where stupidity seems comenplace, maybe even “cool”, I like coming here to gain in my intellect :)
thanks so much for doing this video. Saved me hundreds of dollars. Yours looks great and seems perfectly functional.
This might be the most beautiful work bench I have seen! I think/thought walnut would be my choice of wood but after seeing the hickory I am rethinking it all. Amazing job thanks for sharing! The things people loose sleep over never cease to amaze me

Hickory is a good choice for a workbench. Hard and strong!
Great job!
What a wonderful and simple way to put a lag vise, thank you for sharing
I'm laughing about the dowels and screws a bit more than I think I should. Anyway, I enjoy watching your videos. They are always fun! Thanks for sharing!
;)
The chu chu was priceless. And the table is gorgeous.
Jay, this bench is absolutely stunning. I never knew Hickory could be so beautiful. You should be so proud of your creation.
Came to your channel from your Amazon review. I love your video and I can't wait to get my vise and make a leg vise like yours here.
Screws did not bother me personally, but I am glad you painted the hardware black. It really let's the wood speak for itself.
The vise is great but man does it look good!
A great leg vice solution on a fantastic looking bench.
Lmao!! "I don't have enough aspirin for that!" Always enjoy your videos Jay. Thanks for putting all that additional work into making them. Always detailed and informative.
I love your vids, the way you're working and your sense of humor!
Gorgeous leg vise! Glad you went with the hickory on hickory.
Very nice bench Jay! I'm disappointed in so many people being negative about such trivial matters.
I enjoy your videos & projects. Keep up the good work!
The hickory used for the chop is gorgeous!
Also, RIP screw driver.
Beautiful looking work bench and vise Jay! Thanks for sharing the video.😎👍JP
It’s funny you made this video now...just last week I ordered one of these screws to make an end vice on one of Steve Ramsey’s basic workbenches I did a couple weeks ago.
Jay brother your an inspiration to an old man like myself. Thank you.
One of the nicest benches I’ve seen!
Beautiful addition to a killer bench.
Wow!!!! Wish I had even a tenth of your superb talent.
Crazy how far you come man, I remember the old shop in the apartment. Good stuff.
You’ve got a really nice Workbench JB! I DIG it Man! Have A Super Week!.....Gus
Damn awesome brother! Wish my most abundant wood around my shop would be Hickory! Looks awesome!👍👍
Hickory must grow big down south. Most of the hickory I've come across is much smaller diameter, used more for handles. Great workbench! Thankz
Hickory trees get pretty big here.
The grain on the vice is beautiful.
great job on the new work bench, i wish i had your talent. keep up the great work.
Beautiful! Dowels over screws.. 👍.. Great video.
My nightmares are gone! Nice job on the dowels, Jay! Still a great workbench, regardless! Cheers!
Glad you can sleep better now ;)
Looks real good with the hickory handle. thanks for another great video.
That work bench is beautiful!
Thank you 😁
LIKE YOUR RESPECT FOR THE WOOD. I HAVE A LEGLESS BENCH AND USED YOUR WEDGE WITH A FLOOR STOP BLOCK, WORKS GREAT. MAHALO LEO
Nice! I saw some English styles that add an apron on the vice side to install dog holes so hold fasts can work with the leg vice to secure long pieces to the side of the bench.
Beautiful work Mr Bates. I'm in the middle of building my own work bench at the moment and you have given me a lot to think about. Thank you.
Jay this is my favorite workbench with the hickory!
I am so thankful you painted that vice. Thank you!! This bench is absolutely gorgeous! Great work!!
Beautiful chop on that leg vise, and I learned a couple of things. Thanks!
Thank goodness the blue vise was driving me nuts..
Good watch jay keep it up buddy!
That's one beautiful workbench.I like it
That is an excellent idea. It occurred to me that for your "dowel issue" you could have used a piece of 3/4 inch cold rolled steel. You won't flex that and it could have remained on the outside of the leg. Just a thought. I realize this was 5 years ago.
That is one gorgeous workbench my friend..
As always nice work! Loved the train sound! We will all sleep better with those screws covered LOL. Gotta love peer pressure.
hahahha.
Beautiful workbench.
Good on ya mate, when I made mine after seeing your other bench build I followed your lead and used softwood on the top but it hasn’t worked out too well I’m going to have to inlay some hardwood.
The workbench looks amazing
Wow! That chop is stunning.

try bhv-online...
That wood looks so awesome! It looks like fire
Very nice bench. I have to go back and see one of your videos on how you made the vise.
Excellent video, one of the best benches out there.
beautiful piece of wood, thanks for sharing jay :)
Some gorgeous wood. Love your channel!
Love that locomotive hand saw.....awesome job on the bench Jay.
That wood looks fantastic!
An excellent job, Jay.
Great Vice on a Great Bench! Love your stuff!
Very nice design! Great works.
I love that bench! My bench is an old workmate right now.
Everything I ever needed to know, I learned from Jay Bates. Cheers! Chris.
I love your videos, in fact a leg vise is my new project. Thanks a lot.
Great looking workbench.
I skimmed through all 431 comments, and I'm surprised nobody asked yet whether the old pine bench is nicer to work on. I've heard others complain about bench tops being too hard, vibration, and rebounding.

It looks awesome! It seems trivial about the screws, but you took so much attention to detail that it only seems fitting to finish it with wood.
I haven't went through all the comments so someone else may have already said this but couldn't the dowel go through the leg? Then you wouldn't need the extra piece to hold it in place, it wouldn't bend like it did on the outside and it wouldn't be in the way like it is on the inside. Great simple design, love it!
RUclips at its best. Thanks, Jay! Superb.
cool project... thanks for the amazon link! I definitely have to add one on my bench. I do like the idea of wedge best also!
Love the grain in the chop. I was gonna suggest painting the vise hardware black, but you beat me to it.
That’s a cool and funky chop Jay. Looks perty.
Beautiful bench, Jay. I really enjoyed the videos about it.
P.S: I slept just fine with the screws in as I will with the dowels in... lol
Funny thing was, my Dad’s leg vise made 360• swings and that was a lot of fun ( mischief?). You brought sweet childhood memories to this 70-year old and got his inspired to build one, and an improved one! Thanks
Great looking bench should last several life times
Love the final result here. Beautiful.
