The story about Rya and Millicent are the ones that broke me. I, quite literally, feel dissapointed by Elden ring in the sense that "it's not a doomed reality" like Dark Souls, but yet, the npc's stories are even sadders or end even worst than most of the Dark Souls games. There is some weird cruelty in that.
Ik rights my think with ds was that no matter what the world in this doomed like state so everything’s sad and depressing
Yet with Elden ring the worlds not exactly doomed just chaotic so I hoped for some happier npc story’s low and behold the stories are for the most part more depressing that ds

I think Rya is not special because of her gender, but because she was made through a ritual that lets her assume human form. I'm pretty sure the man-serpents are "Men" as in "Mankind" not as in the gender. They may have been spawned by means other than the ritual.
So we believe the ritual is the reason she is female. It's synonymous. It's possible the other man-serpents aren't literally "men" but genderless.

I think the ritual is actually because she's a first generation man-serpent, basically a demigod. There are probably other female man-serpents but only in reproduction and not identification.
Theres an artist who made an anatomy diagram of Rykard, and basically fan fictioned that Rya was the runt of the God Devourer Serpent’s eggs. It’s both horrifying and cute at the same time.

Her backstory isnt depressing! She finds out shes an abomination created in a hideous ritual between man and serpent and begs you to kill her, I think its kind of sweet!
Am I the only one that thought Ryan was a little bit off-putting when I first met her? Something about the way she slouches gives me the chills she's the last character that I thought The elden Ring community would simp but I guess when your options are necrophiliacs four-armed blue dolls and blind chicks and got to take what you can get

Also, I feel Tanith is one of the most human npcs in Elden Ring. She literally took Rya in, despite how Rya was born, and even questions if she's been a good enough of a mother to Rya.
I doubt Rya is the only female serpent, nothing tell us that.
Why Rya is diferent from the others, is likely becuse she has more human side to her, as you said, the others are more feral.
I’m starting to think she’s so special due to the flaying of her mother. Maybe the ritual that could not be accepted my man or serpent is donning of her mother’s skin.
She's not the only one, across the ocean in another country, there's a fortress named after someone called Sen, and it has woman serpents
(Sorry, couldn't help it) I like to think all these games are in the same universe, and the fan service like basilisk frogs in the lands between, are small proof of their link.

The thing is if I am not mistaken, Rya's birth mother did not willfully engage is such depravity. If I remember correctly, another artifact said that she was indeed curse to seek depravity, which caused her to breed with monsters. This lead her to Ryekard, who needed an army as the knights/warriors that followed him due to his divine right as Demi-God, abandoned/tried to kill him once he became one with the serpent.
So with this woman Ryekard decided to breed his new army, but it all went side ways when Rya was born, as her birth mother died giving birth to her, thus ending Ryekard's plan. Both Ryekard and the other serpents blame her for that, and wished to be executed. However she was saved by Tanith to be raised as her child and become useful to her Lord.
The seems to be the end of it, but what if it wasnt... Without the cursed woman Ryekard had lost the means to build his army, so he would need another way to keep creating more Snake Soldiers. We kniw that lady Taneth only loved Ryekard after he fused with the serpent, thats why she was loyal to him to the point of devoring his remains in the hopes that he would live on through her. She was so obssesd with Ryekard and the power he wielded as a God devouring serpent, that she would cross any line to do so.
What if Taneth only convinced Ryekard to spare Rya, just that she could raise her to become new vessel for Ryekard to keep building his army. After Rya's job as a scout could have been filled by any other faithful to the manner, even Taneth herself. Not to mention that the snake soldiers were watching only over Rya and not any other member of the manner. Perhaps in a way to keep eyes on her, to make sure she wpuld be ready.
In the world of Elden Ring incest and r*pe are not uncommon after all. As we essentially see Moghwynn try to corrupt/defile Miquella, just that his new God, the formless mother could have a vessel. I do feel that if the Tarnished had not been summon to volcano Mannor, this might as well have been Rya's fate.
Thank you for covering this character. I missed nearly all of this quest line and didn’t even know most of this was in the game. I only ever spoke to her in her human form at Volcano Manor when she would talk about hearing something in the walls. Much appreciated.
She is not only the single best maiden, She is a literal princess and technically a demi-goddess. She is wonderful and we BETTER see her quest resolved to meet her appropriate station in the DLC.

I always thought that she was kinda related to the god skins since they also have serpentlike features. And that a godskin is defending the amniom.
My theory before was that rya was supposed to be a god skin hunter but something failed
Rya's story is definetley one of the most touching. Everyone loves Rya!! I think the % of people who killed her on there 1st play through is 1%.

I mean, after being accosted by the lizards and jumped by Alburnarics, I see a lizard in a corner, I swung first and ask questions later!
I didn't know there was more to it. Figured if i refused, itll stay on Accept or Refuse. And that if i gave the tonic, nothing would happen anyways, and I wouldn't want her to forget what she had learned.
So I killed her since I thought that is what I was suppose to do. Not to far off from how Fromsoft has us doing things anyways.

could it be that we steal the flame of ruin and burn the corpse of rykard with it fusing the god devouring serpent with the fire
i would also wish for a dragon ending, where once you killed all the dragons and unlock all dragon comunion incantations you may use them to call the dragon god once more to beat the greater will
Yeah, always wondered why there wasnt a "blasphemous" ending. Shit, you can burn the entire universe, or curse all life in existence, or just kill it. But not make it rot or eat it as a snake? Seems short-sighted.

I honestly loved Rya. It’s insane when I let her live then I watch on RUclips to see what is her other outcomes.. like you see her get killed and she says mother for Tanith. I actually teared up. 😭 I’m just happy in my play through I let her live but I seriously regretted giving the forgetful tonic to her. She’s honestly one of the sweetest kindest npcs ive met. I wanted to see her be free and live on happily
I also think that there is a Serpent-religion that connects to the Godskin. We can find nobles that seem controlled by a strange poison, praying in front of a Serpent priest. Maybe this is the religion they plan to replace the Greater Will with.
Volcano Manor is my absolute favorite place in Elden Ring. Thank you for digging deep into it's lore!

Dude I was just running around volcano manor a couple days ago and came across Rya in the dungeon. I was super stoned and the whole volcano manor lore really grabbed my attention and been obsessed with it since. lol ty for this awesome video

Theres something that still bothers me,
why is Rya considered *unwanted*?
If its the case that Rykard spawned the manserpents, wouldnt a female be the only way to expand/sustain that army? It seems like thats the one thing he would really want
What is it about the ritual that created her that couldn't be accepted by men OR serpents?
She makes it sound like not even Rykard and the other serpents would accept her based on her nature.
I get this impression that theres something even more sinister about this story, but I cant tell what it is. Plus theres some weird things with Rya herself.
She appears really innocent, but shes really not.
Rya is a scout, so she leaves the manor regularly. Her job involves stealth, cunning and no small degree of deception.
While shes by no means malicious, she at least not as naive as she comes off, and its not like shes obstructed from talking to Bernahl, theyre in the same room when you first meet her there.
Its also implied that shes in Liurnia specifically to scout out Lanyas location, considering shes assassinated shortly after.
She must know what the manor is doing, and what her role in it is. Unless someone is constantly making her forget, but I doubt it, seeing as she consistently rembembers who we are.
Id argue too since shes the only scout in the Manor, that shes the one engraving all the red summon signs we end up using.
Shes clearly educated enough to read and write, and communicates with the manor using the same stationary that Tanith does when she gives us our summons.

Why does she not know about the other serpents?
The only other "Woe" talisman is Shabriris', who was a noble and a pretty heinous criminal.
You also find it on what might be his original body. This is important because it establishes right from the beginning of the game how these talismans (maybe identifers of a crime committed amongst nobles) should be described.
If her name was Daedica, why is it called DaedicaR's woe? It makes it sound like a "Daedicar" is something you can be, like an apostle or adherant, (like how Rykard was a justicar)
This connection is kind of weird. What do Daedica and Shabriri have in common?
Does it imply that Daedica was also a noble like Shabriri? Were they punished by the same authority?
Rykard punished the shit out of people with extreme prejudice. It was literally his job, and you find the talisman in the depths of his dungeons, though kind of a random place.
Was Rykard the one that gouged out Shabrirs' eyes?
Was he the one who punished Daedica by flaying her?
What the fuck is going on?
As far as Rya is concerned, it seems as though Tanith sheltered her as much as she possibly could. I doubt she was aware that she was sending the champions she found to their death. That was a secret known only to Tanith, her knight, and Patches. Patches only knew because he's Patches, it's in his nature to be "in the know," but even Berhnal doesn't seem to have been aware that Rykard was eating the other Recusant's. In her letter Rya even says she's going to continue the Volcano Manor's work. If she knew the true point of Volcano Manor was to feed Rykard and grow his power, she'd know there's no point in continuing if he's dead. It's likely she truly believes the Volcano Manor is about the Tarnished she scouted fighting back against the Golden Order.

We have few friends in FromSoft games. Fewer still that live. Rya’s kindness is a respite and so I would never do her harm.
in that room next door to rya u can find an illusory wall and that explains what she saw/heard. it was one of the snail-snake things, not another of the serpents like her.
Those creatures don't have scales. It's more likely the serpent's really do roam the back rooms.
@@square-table-gaming i guess that possible but i think thats more of a stretch considering visually they look like they have scales and there are many snail-snakes there but not a single man-serpent. in a seperate line she mentions it sounds like breathing or slithering scales" and theres a bloodhound knight in the bottom room as well.
I wanted to point it out cuz u said something like rya thought she was the only serpent and were using this as some sort of proof (i have no idea where u got that idea).which i thought was super weird considering she's the scout and is constantly coming and going from the manor, where the serpents are everywhere.
@@_Molecule the entire area where the serpent's are found is hidden from the rest of the Manor. Rya specifically asks you to look for secrets in the Manor and you can't report to her until after you fin that area. She is unaware it exists and as such would never have seen another serpent before.

Was it confirmed that Zorayas was the only female man serpent? I don’t think that’s the case since she doesn’t look all too different from other man serpents in her snake form. The man serpents we fight could have male and female among them and we wouldn’t know. I don’t think Zorayas was particularly special I just think Tanith simply found her by chance and decided to raise her as her own. Perhaps because of her duty to her lord at the start but over time she grew to love her for what she was. A kind pure girl

I hate myself so much when I messed up her questline...
After Tanith gave me the potion, I really intended NOT to give it to Rya since I wanted her to travel the world... I reloaded the area by sitting at a Grace, ran back to her and talked to her.
This is where my mistake happened... I already heard her dialogue, so I spammed skip on her lines and without noticing, I accidentally selected the option to give her the potion...
I was so mad, after killing Rykard, I just straight up killed Tanith without a second thought

I enjoyed this video, I feel like this game doesn't do a good job of explaining lore (the whole souls/borne series was probably deliberately vague) but it's a shame we can't find books or notes in the game to read.
The man serpents are quite cruel (sll the burned body's and cages/t.rture chamber) and another character says the most appalling battle took place on Mt Gelmir. I guess that was the serpent men and recruited tarnished vs Leyndell's soldiers protecting the erdtree?

Rya's existence means the man serpents can reproduce normally now, so from an expirament to create an army, they are now a species, as for Rya saying the serpents hate her, well did she confirm that or does she assume they do like she assumes her mother "shouldnt" accept her?
I don't think it's accurate to say Rya/Zorayas is the only female Man-Serpent we meet. They are reptiles, and it's often impossible to determine their sex without a close inspection. "Man" is often used as shorthand for "human," and does not always denote sex. She is just the only one where it is denoted clearly.
But other than that, good video.
We get into this in the comments but we believe it's part of the reason she's considered an abomination by the other serpent's. Fair assessment though!

A species, depends on the state and health of their 'female' population. Since Rya is the only female serpent. She is the only one of their kind to be able to continue to breed the (next generation) so-to-speak.

They're called "Man-Serpents" which implies male gendering in our opinion because Rya is clearly female. She is seen as an unwanted child born of a hideous ritual so our assumption is that her female gendering, which can only be seen in her human form, would be what made her unwanted by the other Man-Serpents and Rykard. We think the ritual was intended to create a female man-serpent. If you subscribe to the idea that they are called "Man-Serpent's" to imply "Humanoid Serpent" then I can see where this connection may not hold up, but we think the name is more literal.

There's, no evidence that it swallowed a god before Rykard. If it did there's be another god in there fighting for dominance of the serpent's body.

I am getting all sorts of sociopathy red flags from Tannith. Instead of talking Rya out of her sadness, she intends to delete her memory. Rykard is supposed to be the love of her life, but when I tell her he's kicked the bucket, she doesn't start weeping, curse me, or swear to avenge him -- that is what normal people would do, but not her... You know what she went to do instead. Tannith is no motherly figure. She is a controlling, possessive sociopath.
Kind of feel she knew, in a way, that Rykard would have to fall. And honestly, I do feel Tanith does try to be a good mother, especially to Rya. She even questions if she is a good mother to Rya. Definitely feel Tanith deserves respect for even trying to care for Rya.

Daedicar is Tanith and Patches best not get involved with her. The ritual of the amnion is one of many blasphemies that Tanith has committed and gave birth to all the serpents. She was flayed for her blasphemies, by the golden order prolly. That’s why she wears that mask.
It’s a stretch but she may be connected to Dominula, windmill village where the godskin apostle seems to be directing a cult there... where they flay the men possibly as vengeance for Taniths flaying. They also perform a ritual that turn flayed men into shambling bombs where you find the noble set.
Also a stretch, but I suspect the depraved perfumers serve the serpents. Their symbol clearly depicts the erdtree enwreathed in serpents and their leaders ashes are found in volcano manor.
It's interesting to think Daedicar and Tanith may be the same person, but then why would she call Rya her adoptive daughter?
@@square-table-gaming Familial love. They really do all love each other in the volcano manor. That’s why Rya is not slain and was instead in-prisoned so that she may be given the tonic of forgetfulness. Rykard offers Tanith the same tonic if the truth bothers her so much.
She is called adoptive because her origin is of blasphemy and she was raised sheltered instead of being told the truth. The only way Tanith can be Rya’s mother is through blasphemy and so she is called adoptive daughter. Being claimed as a true daughter may also have political implications; she will never lead the manor and exists solely to serve rykards designs. She is not a princess or free though she is loved.

I don’t know Japanese but I wonder if is the same in Japanese and the intended translation is more like wereserpent. FWIW the way it is translated into French is just as reptilien.

The apostle don't look stupid either they feel human enough and are very religious they look like they could speak at any moment! so in the same way that Shabriri was driven to the Outer God of Chaos when his eyes were plucked out, Daedicar was driven to the Outer God of Sin/Blasphemy through her debauchery, and so Rykard was consumed by sin
