    Update: While the info in this video is still relevant, there have been A TON of camera updates since I uploaded this. My go-to recommendation for a streaming camera is the Sony ZV-E10: bhpho.to/3yWDwEp (B&H)
    You can take it even further by pairing it with the Sigma 16mm prime lens and get some truly incredible results. The camera is 4K capable, has great autofocus, and clean HDMI out. It can even be used directly as a USB webcam.

    Absolutely brilliant as always Tom! I know this may not be your target audience, but I wish someone could do a lens tutorial that began with 'First the earth cooled..' - lens stuff always seems to assume a high level of prior understanding - which is great if you have it - but a bummer if your still don't (yet) understand the basics. OMG the transparent overlay is amazing - and so effective!!! How on earth did you do that?!?!

      Haha, thank you!
      1. I’m happy to dive into lens basics, but I don’t know how much interest there is in it. I love that stuff though.
      2. I used Ecamm to record my camera’s menus, which have a black background my default. In final cut changed the blend mode to “add” and it made them transparent. Then it was just a matter of re-positioning them. Rafael Ludwig has a great tutorial about it on his channel!

    Started with the Canon Rebel T3/1100D, back in quarantine season had to fumble with it a bit using the EOS camera utility, Live View Shoot, cropping the window in obs then using it as a virtual cam thru obs again. Since Canon released the updated EOS WebCam Utility, my camera has been supported and the janky software setups were fixed, no more cropping the live view, no more auto shut off.

    Nice work. You do a great job! Exactly the same list (with the exception of interchangeable lenses) that I have used over the years. I’m not sure, but I believe that straight up video cameras are most likely to have all of these features.
    Dedicated video cameras like the Canon XA, XF, Vixia series will likely have all these features - and very likely not have over heating issues. Many won’t have interchangeable lenses, though.
    I’m of the opinion right now that the DSLR approach to video is really the multi tool approach. I suspect that video cameras would offer a more stable platform for most people. Thoughts? I’ve done the video for my church for decades, and that’s my current approach.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад +1

      Dedicated video cameras are definitely more suited for this, and I thought about talking about them here, but I personally love the flexibility of changing lenses. We use video cameras at work for streaming and there have been too many times over the years where we’ve found ourselves limited.

    I watched a RUclips video by a Russian guy (who typed out his whole script into google translate so he could do a video in English) who taught you how to hack your canon m100 for live streaming. It totally works amazing! If someone out there is doing his cute trick with computer code on a memory card to get a clean hdmi signal here’s a pro tip: if you loose auto focus it could be cuz you accidentally took a photo. Apparently the code doesn’t work if there’s anything on the card. Just reformat and reload the files on your memory card, and auto focus will be back working again.

      @@tombuck Yeah, apparently even though the cannon m100 doesn’t have options for giving you a clean hdmi signal or unlimited power settings, that’s only because they removed the options from the menus. You can still tell the camera to do it with a programming script loaded onto a blank memory card. It’s a little annoying of a user experience, but it does work. The camera has a beautiful image quality, and it’s nice to be able to use it for streaming.

Decide what you're mainly going to be doing, video or photography. Then buy the one that's made for that job it will do a better job. Talking dslr style being thats the big thing in video now days. Sony got it a while back and made the A7s for video and A7r for photography. Some days I think Canon has been confused since the Canon 5D Mark2 and Vincent Laforet's video Reverie. Hey Ronty! I haven't used the M6 myself, so I can't say much about it, but I know quite a few people who love it, so it definitely seems like a great camera. I've used the M50 though, and my biggest issue is the M series lenses- there not the best and you don't have many options to choose from. However, you can buy an EF to M adapter and then use all of Canon's EF and EF-S lenses with the M6.
      As for USB, Canon's Webcam Utility will let you use the camera with OBS or any other software and the picture quality is ok. The biggest downside is that it's limited to 576p, which isn't great.
      If you'll be doing a lot of streaming or recording directly to your computer, the best thing to do is get a capture card like the Elgato CamLink so you can use up to 4K resolution.

    Thanks a lot for your vid! Below low end, you have also Lumix G7, which has all the items named, except it has a bad AF. But man, I bought it for less than 400 €, kit lenses included. I stream in manual focus like a dream. Having a shallow depth of field is not a preference for me, as I use almost always a chroma key setup, so I can use an aperture that allows me to be in focus.

    • @tombuck

    Hey Tom. I’ve just started using the Canon EOS R with my Zoom meetings and I’m having serious latency issues. Could you be so kind as to break down why that might be? It’s so confusing.
    Using canon Web Software with USB C God Cable with high bandwidth speed directly to Mac Pro USB C, 59 FPS FHD...
    It’s so frustrating.
    Love your videos. I actually just found you and glad I did. Great content bro.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад

      When you say latency, are you referring to the audio going out of sync with the video? If so, this is super common regardless of how great your connection might be (video signals are ALWAYS "heavier" than audio signals, so this means you'll often need to delay your audio to match up). In most streaming software like Ecamm and OBS you can add an audio delay to help with this.

    Nice presentation! Don't all Canon camera have a 30 minute recording limit? (For European tax purposes) I know my own 6D and 5D II do. I thought the 6D MKII also had this limitation. If so how did you get around it? I stream with a 6d MKI but I had to instal Magic Lantern to turn off the 30 minute limit. I thought the R series also had this limitation. It's not anything to do with power saving. It just literally stops recording every 29 minutes and 59 seconds.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Год назад

      Fortunately Canon has started to remove the 30 minute limit from their newer cameras (but they sure held on to it looooong after the law was changed).
      The good news though for streaming is that the camera doesn't need to be recording, so as long as it has enough power (and there aren't any power-saving options enabled that will turn it off), you should be good to go.
      I've used the 6D MKII for many many streams over the years 👍

      I haven't used the a7II myself, but I'd definitely start by seeing if it works with the Sony USB app. Otherwise you should be able to run it through a CamLink or ATEM just fine via HDMI.
      Beyond that, a lot has to do with your lens. In general, the more distance you can put between yourself and the background, the more pleasing the scene will be. I keep my camera about 3 ft (1 meter) away from me, and I'm about 6-8ft (2-2.5 meters) from the back wall. I use a 24mm f1.4 lens, so your results may vary depending on focal length and aperture.

    • @tombuck

      If you have the budget, I say go for the R. But if not, the RP is outstanding. My main reasons for choosing the R over the RP are the battery and size. If you're shooting sports, the larger body of the R might be better with bigger lenses. The RP also loses a lot of its autofocus ability in 4K video mode, but that might not be an issue for you.
