    I am proudly 67 years old and love the simplistic older diesel engines, and am especially fond of Perkins, supply clean air and fuel and they just kept on going and were no problem to repair. Interesting your comment on Cat / Perkins. 30 odd years ago I did a 4-236 genset change out on a boat which required removing the head of the engine to get out of the access hole. When I removed the head of the new engine a head bolt broke, It was Saturday and the boat needed to be back in service Sunday so it was an Oh F..k moment. A quick panicky run through my normal suppliers came up with nothing and a spark in the back of my head told me CAT at one stage used the 236 in forklifts. Off I went to my good friends at Hastings Deering in Cairns and we poured through the fish ( that will make a few people think) and we found the CAT part for a 236 head bolt and it was in stock. Repair done, boat up and running. I don't know what the moral is to this but sometimes you have to look outside the square

      Hi mate thanks for the comment. Brilliant yarn. Perkins are great engines. Cat indeed did use them. I think they were painted yellow with a cat sticker on the tappet cover, the ones I’ve dealt with anyway. I have a 4/236 here in a 165 Massey Fergusen, brilliant old engine, in fact all the Perkins I have are great, even the worn out one still does the job. When playing with this older stuff you nearly always have to think outside the square because a lot of it is hard to get now and you need to improvise.
      When you mention pulling the engine out of a boat, I had to do it once here. And like you say they are a tight fit and a cramped area to work in. I pulled a B series Cummins out of a twin engine boat my boss had and one side got cooked. The only thing that made the job good that it was on the water still and made a great atmosphere compared to the workshop or working on earthmovers in brick works and garbage tips like I’m used too and still do now. Good to talk mate

    As soon as I saw it turn by hand, I knew you'd get smoke out of her!! Although, I wasn't expecting that much!! Ha ha!! I regret not doing a 'will it start' on an old Perkins powered army 6x6 acco (it was just before I started filming stuff), but the intake was full to the brim with water, and had been for a number of years. Eventually got it fired up again (I think it's the 2nd video I ever posted). Awesome job, Steve (and Geoffrey!). Looking forward to more vids with you two.

    In regards to the fan, if the vehicle was still running in the past but without the fan, it may have been because the fan threw a blade, and was off-balance, and the driver had a wedding to get to, so they simply took the whole fan assembly off and drove their '77 Dodge Coronet along surface roads while gauging approaching red lights VERY CAREFULLY so they could keep a speed of 30-ish MPH to keep enough air flowing over the radiator, along US 13 in Delaware when the Route 1 Turnpike was still in the ground-breaking era.
    My father made it to his sister's wedding on time, by the way.

    Hey Steve, jim Rioux from Connecticut. Perkins I heard was a very reliable engine, is that so. I was also wondering what the weight of your perkins engine is. Is it much heavier than a 350 gm gas engine. Always great to see what you are doing. If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living. Oh one more thing I noticed on many of the Australian trailers they have 3 axels and I think I've seen 4 axels on a trailer. Most in the us are 2 axels. Thanks jim

    • @stevesplacedownunder
      @stevesplacedownunder  Год назад +1

      Hi Jim. They certainly are mate. They basically built Australia in powering old trucks and equipment mate. Very reliable and durable. They are about 1300lbs, roughly 600kg. Most that size, 6/354 (6 cylinder, 354cubic inches) are rated at 120hp. There were also differences in colours and outputs. There were yellow, pink and silver models.
      I’m a plant mechanic mate. I fix and rebuild earthmoving equipment. Mainly Caterpillar’s and Komatsu. I’ve been doing it for 23 years and been employed by the same company since I left school. Also a bit of truck driving and plant operating over the years but mainly on the tools. Recently just finished a full rebuild on a Cat D9T bulldozer.
      Yes most of our trailers have 3 axles, tri axle we call them but everything is getting bigger now for more pay load so to see a quad axle, 4 axles now is very common. A lot of our Dog trailers now have 5 axles. 2 on the dolly and 3 on the trailer, and when pulled with a single steer axle truck and 3 rear axles, bogey drive with a lazy axle, they are hauling 45 tons payload. I believe most trailers in the US are 2 axles yes mate

      I get what you mean, the village I lived in as a kid near the lorry yard I worked was on a hill with 2 way lorry traffic, with Jake and Exhaust brakes going empty or loaded. Although they were on shitter drum brakes not the discs now.
      And I've experienced brake fade in 40t truck to make me appreciate the Jakes stopped power.
      If you want to stop the noisy wankers, try a Stinger or Stop Stick😜😆

    It’s probably not a bad idea to wear a face mask when cleaning out rat nests.
