I love the fact the start up is so predictable that your driver is happy to float with the current for a bit while spooling up..... and also the shots of the piston boats being left in a roosters tail! Awesome Stuff!
The awesome power of a turbine. I had to laugh out loud when the driver opened it up at the race start and the piston boats, while they had been in front for a few seconds, the whistle of the turbine overtook any and all challengers. Thanks - great vids
I have seen smoke puffs from big engines on test stands. Here I thought it was water spray mixing with hot exhaust gases. No problems were encountered.
A couple of things: 1: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR NO MUSIC!!!!!! ...I loved listing to the boats as they did their laps, and the T58 when it comes on song is pure grin inducing. 2: To those calling it unfair...sure their is a big difference in terms of their engines, but like car racing of the Group B rally days or V8 Supercars in Australia in the 1990's....you dont get faster and betters being Number 1 every time...its more fun to chase something down and innovate. 3: Dont stop being awesome....loved it.
Nice build. Worked with TF34, T56, TF100, and P&W R2800 (radial) power plants myself. At least in the aviation field. I hope the #2 bearing was tight, spinning them like that can foul up a lab seal quick. Love the boat and the turbine sounds really happy. The finish reminds me of the Indiana Gov.'s cup a few years back when I saw Miss Bud vying with Miss Madison. Unfortunately for Bernie, Miss Madison was in the lead. Some of my most cherished clips. Audio sucked on them because some rotary death trap was hovering directly overhead. I was really proud for Madison In. when their boat finally won against big money sponsorship. To my knowledge the only Unlimited owned by a city.
I must say, I really REALLY enjoyed that! What fun and you guys did a great job! I am a pilot and flight instructor (watching your videos primarily for educational purposes) but I love to show my friends in the aviation industry what happens when a turbine meets the marine world...wow! Well done!
Flipping awesome. I remember when I was a little kid all the big hydrofoils used huge piston aircraft engines, then the United Van Lines and Miss Budweiser showed up with their turbines and that was all she wrote. And so quiet.
sh*t man!...makes a little power haha...blew passed the competition like they were standing still... that being said, it's not as simple as dropping a turbine in your boat ... set up to handle that extra speed and horsepower, along with a knowledgeable crew makes it look easy...congrats.
OMG, that was every superlative I can think of. Totally outgunned the opposition and all class. That was a truly beautiful drive in a very spectacular machine. A little shaky?, nah that's horsepower trying not to be tamed. Nice engine JayZ, looks like to be competitive they all need to visit Jet City?
I can NOT get over how fast that is traveling. And what a view! Watching objects disappear in a fraction of a second as it flies by. My hat is off to the drivers/pilots. Oh, and of course the sound of that turbine is sweet. Thanks, Agent J Zed, truly a remarkable boat or as "Quint" would say, "vessel".
I remember when I was 15 living on Okanagan lake in Vernon, B.C. there was this guy who lived down the road who had a 40' Catamaran with a done up 502BBC. The next year he had a 50' Catamaran with an engine out of a helicopter. The sound I heard every weekend at 5am when the lake was like glass was priceless. He had 2 trolling motors to pull the boat back from the launch as he let the turbine fire & warm up. When he'd leave it would stand at about 20° and once it trimmed down left a wake/rooster tail the likes I've only seen at Thunderfest. What you have there is absolutely nuts and I absolutely love it!
Thanks for showing us. 120-130 mph on a river is amazing but fun only (although I am a piston guy). I didn't see a turbine on a boat ever and couldn't get the grin off my face for at least 15 minutes :-) New subscriber here, also for the technical vids. Much appreciated. Regards from Germany
v8 scream and scream but not move, that's why i love turbine engines, they whistle and runs fast as hell (way better sound, much more tech and give more feeling of power)
8:00 at first I don't see the other boats, then their rooster tails appear and then fade into the distance. WOW this thing is a beast! Imagine a nice calm day fishing and then this monster roars past...that's how UFO stories begin!
Recently, a timed out ( meaning in need of a full overhaul ) T58 sold for 400,000 CDN. To restore that to aviation servicability would be another 2 or 3 hundred grand in parts. ... You said perfection, right? To find a tired , thrashed, worn out scrap heap that would not be safe to even start might cost you 20K, to restore that to perfection... it's known as BER... cheaper to buy a new one.
Thanks. Funny, I live in Indy, where Allison (Rolls Royce) calls home! They have made gas turbine engines there for years, as well as transmissions. The M1A1 tank is Allison G.T. powered, as far as I know. I have many more comments & questions on your many great videos but I won't wear you out this time! Thank you very much & regards! Darren
May God Bless and guide theme home safely, Bless their Families, their Boat and their inspiration. Thanks for your teachings Ole Master Turbine Yoda. Let's have fun bring them all home safe at the end of the day and your teachings have opened my eye's. Thanks again, GB
They're too much competition even for the Allisons and Merlins from world war 2 fighter aircraft. But they put up a fight. That reminds me, I want to rewatch the President's Cup when Oh Boy! Oberto beat Miss Budweiser again, this time in a straight up match. Seems like a 10 - 15 second lead. T58s turn 6,000 pound watercraft into 200 MPH rockets.
Awesome boat . I’m sure a lot of guys are running what’s in there budget with the piston boats . If they all had the jet set up it wld be a havoc of a race .
Wow. That is really something. I meet up with the owner of a steam museum just south of Palmerston North in New Zealand a few years ago. Talked about the steam turbine/generator used in the Golden bay cement works in Takaka that he now has. He said they used to spool up the turbine with minimal steam quickly, The energy used in getting there was small, 2 or 3 percent. But once synced with the grid they could open up full throttle right away. The efficiency of the turbines stood out when you looked at the mass of the rotating weight.
The Gnome is essentially the same engine. The T-58 is a license-built copy of the RR Gnome. The fuel control of the Gnome is more problematic in trying to adapt it to a home built race boat. The engine featured in the series is a T58 -8F. Yes, the -16 is much sought after, and hard to find. Since the water jet drive system used in these boats was originally designed for about 500Hp, I think the jump from 1250 to 1800 Hp will result mainly in more broken parts...
Very nice boat! For those that think a turbo diesel might give it a run for the money they don't realize how much power a turbine makes per pound of engine weight which makes it a perfect boat powerplant. 1250hp from an engine that might not weight much more than just the turbos on a diesel. No recip will ever come close to turbine power.
Thank you for all your videos Agent JAYZ!!! Could you do one on a T53 I run two hybrids 13b-703s in a big catamaran boat i have been running them for 12 years now and they really perform well. i just had to swopped out the first gp nozzle in one because of heat and salt erosion. i do all my servicing on them and have learned so much just by watching your videos!!!! Again Thanks for Sharing!!!!!!!
There is no afterburner. There is a reduction geabox after the on-engine SDG, or speed decreaser gear... it has a separate oil supply and pump. Maybe you're seeing that.
That's a high capacity electric fuel pump being used here as a boost pump. It supplies a constant low pressure to the inlet of the on-engine fuel pump. In helicopters and aircraft, it would be inside the fuel tank and ensure the main fuel pump never has to suck or cavitate

Hey Jay! Awesome video! I want a gas turbine engine like the T-58, but only 1/2 that power to play with!! Thanks for the work you do & I watched the whole ad before the video!
AgentJayZ, thanks for posting this awesome video! At the very start of this video he too off so fast. It looked like he was hitting 100mph within seconds. Thanks. Many millions disagree...
3rd best :p
I will say that it definitely does not suck.
Still one of the sickest videos on youtube. I've watched this like 15 times now and has never gotten old.
No comparison to pistons
Well it is the one that we've been following all through this series. Go back in time, and we get a good look inside it.
I used to fly LCACs in the Navy, that boat is very impressive. Brings back fond memories of extreme speeds over water.
After surfing the comment section, you Sir, are a gentleman. Witnessing that boat run proves you are a scholar.
Thanks for the kind words. I had never been to NZ before, and I found it to be very much to my liking!

There is a severe amount of awesome in this one!
Seeing "JET CITY TURBINES" blazed on the side gave me a big 'ole grin 😁
…we FINALLY see the end result of your work! Most engines you build go in a can and disappear! This is OUTSTANDING!
That's why they call it UNLIMITED CLASS, Run what ya brung and hope ya brung enough!!! lol

I've been told the engine has really good throttle response, and it looks to be on par with a piston V-8, only with more of everything.
@vinny142
I can't help laughing like a madman every time I watch this. SPEED!
This is awesome, I worked on T-58 engines in the Marine Corps, glad to see they are being used for racing.
You should watch the whole series, and tell me all the things I do wrong. Always good to hear from people with experience on these military engines.
26,000 for the gas generator; 18,500 for the power turbine, which then turns a 3:1 reduction gearbox

Lots of people posting their “brroooo boooosssttttttt turrrbbboooo speeeed” boats... nothing compares to this. You have dominated everyone.
The Sikorsky S-61 I fly has two of these GE CT58-140's. Great vid!

It get's real interesting when several turbine powered boats are running close together.

That was in the video about the Dart River in NZ. That was a crazy day.

A jet jet boat. What a beast. Love it!
What's not to love? Fast boats and nice water!! I'm your new subscriber Agent Jay-Z
What else to go fishing?
You guys are crazy, I love it!
You river racers are maniacs. I dream of being a fellow maniac, one day. Thanks for the vid!
Tom D I don't think it's all that expensive to get into the FX class, and they do 90 MPH...
Lol! Makes you almost feel sorry for the guys in the piston boats... no chance!! Awesome boat guys, really awesome!
Great video love it thanks for sharing I just found my new hobby
Piston boats can't compete with that much power! Amazing!
Not true. WW2 aircraft engins like the Rolls Royce Griffon engines or Allison's 1710, are just as fast as the turbines.
Those engines are more powerful, but I think the comment referred to the automotive piston engines that are allowed to race in this class.
Okay, I didn't know that. But that's odd, because the turbines don't come from automotive either ;)
That is a good argument for separate classes.
Yeah.
nice rig. New Zealanders do this all the time. Epic
