Due South - A Southbound Journey on the Pacific Crest Trail | Short Movie

- Hellooooo peeps! Long time no see.
This year I made the biggest dream of my life come true: Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail! In this film, I share my journey along the PCT going southbound, capturing both the breathtaking landscape and the inner journey that came with doing such a long hike.
It's about facing what seems hard, whatever that might mean for you. For me, it was walking over 2,600 miles through deserts, mountains, and forests and pushing my own limits. If I can do this, you can do it!
This film is a glimpse into my experience on the PCT. It’s relatively short, so while I can't fully capture the depth of the trail, I’ve tried to give you an honest look at what it was like. Lean back and enjoy!
I’m planning a 5-episode series where I'll dive deeper into my journey on the trail, sharing the highs, lows, and everything in between. Stay tuned for more! :-)

When you cut to Kite with his arms up as the music dropped… instant chills. Miss you already Helena. So many memories and moments that I’ll hold close for the rest of my life.
All hail the lolly at Olallie!!

Awwww Luke, thanks so much! I miss you too, it was such a great time...
You rock at skittle toss!!!!
Hey, Wizard! Great video and great memories. I started a day ahead of you and we met briefly at Devil's Staircase. I just finished the trail yesterday (November 18). It was fun watching your video and seeing so many people I met and hiked with this year: Ethan, Maria, Sunshine, NightVision, Wingspan, and others. Thanks for all your work putting this video together. You've got a gift, and I look forward to watching your next adventures. - Roadrunner
Hey Roadrunner! Thanks so much for your comment, I can remember when we met on my second day!! I’m glad you enjoyed the video :-)
Congrats on finishing for you too!!
Amazing adventure! Thanks for sharing.
@@ChadM10 glad you enjoyed it :-)
This is such a beautiful video! The stunning scenery of the Pacific Crest Trail is breathtaking, and it’s amazing to see your journey captured so honestly. Looking forward to the deeper dive into your experience in the upcoming series! 🌟👏
I’m goin to flip flop the pct this summer. I can’t wait too! New year brings newness. Thanks for the video. I’m just watching them to get hyped up, and I’m sooo hyped right now…

Such a great video!Really loved this hike. So wonderful time. Greetings from Japan, Cheers🍻😊🐶💖
Thank you so much!
Beautiful journey! One in a life time experience! Watching the stunning outdoor videography made by you always brings lots of joy and inspires me! Keep the good work up!
You have a talent for sharing your personal experience along with capturing the beauty of the PCT. As someone who began hiking in Yosemite nearly 70 years ago with my family and friends. That was the first of probably more than two dozen back country experiences. Three years ago did North Dome. Beautiful work!
Amazing pictures, stunning story telling! Thanks for sharing
I've watched many of these PCT vlogs over the years. This was one of the better ones. Great filming and editing. Congrats! I'm sure that your boyfriend and family are amazed at your hike.
@@99jkane thank you so much! I’m happy you liked it!!
So glad Wingspan shared your video; I enjoyed it very much and it was wonderful to see your perspective on hiking this trail. Thanks for making this available.
@@mdb9818 I’m so glad you liked it!! :-)
Great video work, and I loved the part at the end where your tramily talks about their reasons for doing the PCT. Thank you for this, as I plan my 2025 SOBO.
Ohhh amazing! You’ll love it :-) not a single time I regretted my decision to hike SOBO! I wish you an amazing time!
Great documentary! My nephew, Wingspan, shared it on his blog. I loved being able to see the beauty of the PCT along with your commentary and seeing my nephew! You all created memories that will last a lifetime!
Thank you so much, I'm happy you enjoyed it!! :-)
Insanely beautiful video!!! I'm jealous!!
It gives justice to this great journey!
It's been fun to randomly bumb into you in some random Oregon forest!! :)
@@lore_hikes thank you so much!! Man I wish we got a video together! Haha… maybe we meet again ;-)
Wizard, thank you! Live your wisdom and insight at such a young age, you are blessed!

Love this video of our partially shared journey. Congrats 🎉
What a wonderful compilation of your experience. I could feel your journey in how you expressed your thoughts and in the wonderful videos and stills you shared. I cried during the California section. I moved away from California after living my entire 41 years there and I get choked up when I see the Sierras.
@@professormph thanks for your comment, I’m so glad you liked the video!
California really is a special place, I hope you can come back one day :-)
instant goosebumps and a good cry after the video! This reflects how much I love the PCT!! Such a fantastic video, it shows the trail so perfectly. I miss it dearly.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad it could bring some PCT feelings back for you!!!
Absolutely beautiful and sentimental video! Also loved the cool PCT designs and maps used throughout, that I’m sure you designed! As a fellow July 1st sobo it was so lovely to meet you, see your analogous experience and see so many trail friends we met along the way!! Thanks for making such an incredible video for all of the 2024 sobos to treasure!

Enjoyed your video. Nice overview of the PCT SOBO. I've wanted to hike the PCT ever since I first discovered it in 1978. Due to life and responsibilities I've only been able to do sections. I'm planning to go SOBO in 2016 and and do the whole thing once I retire. Since I live near the southern terminus I'll essentially be walking home. Can't wait.

The differences going SOBO are impressive to see - I went NOBO this year and some of those shots look simultaneously recognisable and completely different! Thank you for putting this together and congrats on your hike

Great job on capturing the essence of the trail in less than a half hour. As a fellow “class of 2024” pct hiker I really enjoyed your perspective, and gorgeous photography!

thank you so much to share it with all of us 🥰
It was great meeting you out there, at the trail crew camp south of Snoqualmie Pass. Glad to see you had a great hike and made it all the way. Great videography and so many memories of places on the trail - it's fun playing the mental game of seeing if I can tell where each of the scenes were taken. The perspective, the vision, gained on the trail grows over the years - 18 years on for me.
@@Token_Civilian omg I was thinking about you guys so many times! I was so scared when I met you, I never thought I would make it to Mexico, but I felt so much better after talking to you. It was so fun to hang out with you and the crew, my first trail magic on the PCT.
So glad you enjoyed the video. 18 years is so long, I bet you can still recognise all those places, this is amazing!
I also carried the Smokey bear pin to Mexico that your friend gave me. :-)
Great to see this, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching :-)
Insanely great footage & cinematography! Love your cam setup, jealous on so many shots! Also stunning to see the Sierra without snow 🤯
Having watched it with my family, they all freaked out during the skiddles challenge scene ;D That evening, lasting memories were created :)

Hey Helena! Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum PCT! Großartiges Video…❤
Dankeschön!!
Awesome, inspiring video! Do you know how old Kite was? I'm an older guy too, and wondering if I still have a cross country hike left in me.
@@danchapman8218 hey! Glad you enjoyed it :-) Kite was 57 or 58 (I forgot exactly) when we hiked.
You definitely have! I met quite some older folks out there ☺️ a northbound hike will give you a bit of a longer time frame to hike the trail and also I met many people doing sections if the whole thing seems a bit scary :-)
Thank you Helena for what you have done in the past, all your videos have been so inspiring. When you did the PCT I was so happy for you. Good to hear from you again.
How did you get your trail name Wizard?
@@Gruftgrabbler thank you sooo much! I’m so happy to hear that!
I got the name wizard because when I got bored in Oregon I started squaring double digit numbers in my head and after someone asked me to square a few and they were correct he said “you’re a wizard”. We were looking at wizard island in crater lake at the time.

Great video! I'd love to know what your start date was and some pace indicators eg. When did you finish Washington or reach the California border, the sierra and forester pass?

Oregon: 2nd August
California border: 20th August.
Forester Pass: 5th October.
KMS: 9th October
Mexico: 6th November
@@helena_hikesawesome thanks for the info. Looks like you had a few people around most of the way - nice to know that's possible vs the classic rhetoric of going SOBO = always being alone! 😁
Did you have to miss any sections with fires?
@@emmap8751 SOBOs definitely don’t have to be alone if they don’t want to!
I missed a small part of Oregon due to a fire and then another small part of California. But overall missed less than most NOBOs that year :-)
❤❤❤🎉
That was beautiful. Thank you.
@@peterjohnson6273 glad you liked it!
amazing!
Did you have any trouble pitching ur durston? And is it just for u or shared?
@@escaaaaaa893 never had any trouble pitching it. Sometimes you need some rocks to secure the stakes on very hard or very sandy ground but I always managed well. It was just for me!
Beautiful video, thank you for sharing. A couple of questions if you don't mind since you did SOBO. When did you start and finish, was there a lot of snow in WA to deal with, were there any issues with high water in the Sierra's? Thanks again
@@Ludachris610 hey! Glad you liked it. I started on the first of July and finished 6th November. There was quite some snow in Washington, whether or not that’s a problem for someone is very personal. We met a lot of people quitting or turning around before touching the border, but me and my hiking partner found it not too bad as we have experience with backcountry skiing. Sure it is annoying and you have wet feet, but NOBOs also have that in the Sierra. :-) there was NO high water at all in the Sierra, I had to only take my shoes off once and that was because I missed the proper place to cross the river. It’s mostly rock hopping for SOBOs. :-) hope that helps!
@helena_hikes Thank You so much!!
Really enjoyed this..thx!
@@BoulderHikes glad you enjoyed the video!!
Why did you choose SOBO instead of NOBO? Was it for any particular reason or was it just because that was when you had the opportunity to go?
@@tadghsmith1457 it worked out with my schedule but I also liked the idea that it was a little less social, I was excited to start in Washington and be in the desert when it’s not hot anymore. Overall it just seemed like the better way to me personally :-)

Wenig Schnee in NorCal wäre gut, dann kann ich früher los (bin zeitlich flexibel, ü60).
