I feel like I'm in high school again. This album was the bee's knees when it first came out! But in retrospect, it was the beginning of the end for indie rock. Everything in the indie rock world post-Vampire Weekend has been either farcical to the point of absurdity or sincere to the point of disgust. No one really balanced the two extremes as well as Vampire Weekend on their self-titled album before or since. It was an album of a specific time and place in history: that post-9/11 and pre-recession era where we knew we were fucked but didn't *know* it yet; right before the pop culture circled in on itself and the past became the future. 2008 seems so long ago yet like yesterday at the same time.
I love Vampire Weekend so much, I own all their albums on vinyl and I’ve seen them live. But I fucking hate this song now. But it’s only because for 4 years everytime I started my car it would automatically play it since well.. it’s called A-Punk and it’s obviously gonna be the first song alphabetically. But for some reason I still clicked on this video and it put a big smile on my face. Never understood why this is their most known and most popular song. So many other songs of theirs are way better. But to each their own. Hope to see them live again, sadly without Rostam this time. But every video I’ve seen of them live recently has seemed amazing. Having a ton more people performing on stage looks like a better direction they have taken. Ugh I need a new album by them NOW!
