I’m so sorry, I never knew until today that Phyllis passed away. My condolences to her family. I’ve made at least 12 jelly rolls using her recipe, one was double in size by doubling up on the recipe as I wanted it to be my birthday cake. A fabulous recipe! ❤️🤗👍🏼
Oh Phyllis..you were just a genius in the kitchen! Our local grocery sells these jelly roll cakes in several flavors and they're decent but not like homemade. You are missed girl!
I miss you little lady. Loved your stories in finding mr. Bucky. Cooking for the two of you. You were so clean while mixing or whatever recipe working on. Hoping both uR souls are together!
In the 1970s I used to make a Buche de Noel for Christmas dessert. Fancy French name but still a jelly roll. I'd make mine with peppermint flavored whipped cream, chocolate sponge cake, then frost it with butter cream chocolate frosting. I'd take a fork and draw marks to make it look like wood. Decorate the plate with sprigs of holly. Looked fantastic, tasted fantastic, wowed the Christmas guests. Did everything -- rolling it in a cloth tea towel -- exactly like you do it. (Just dusted with cocoa powder.)
You dear, are a master! Thank you for this. I bake artisan bread and an occasional buntdt but if I ever feel ambitious, I'm coming back to your channel for this recipe. Thanks for sharing all of your 50s and 60s type recipes. It sure brings back memories for me!
Ms. Phyllis I do remember those jellyrolls , Hostess did make them. I would get the chocolate cupcakes and my brother would get the jellyroll. You made a very good jellyroll.😁
Peach Jelly rolls were so good, you could get the large one or the package of 3 small ones. They had a coating of sugar on the outside and the raspberry jelly inside. Why do they stop making some of the stuff that was so good. There was a cereal made by Kellogg’s that I liked it was called Krumbles it was thin little strips and Betty Crocker made a date bar cookie mix that was so good, also they had a coconut macaroon mix that I loved.
I JUST LOVE WATCHING U !! IT'S LIKE IM WATCHING MY GRANDMA & MY MOM IN THE KITCHEN ! THANK U ! CAN'T WAIT TO MAKE & RELIVE THESE YUMMY TIMELESS GOODIES
Just love your videos. I still cook from scratch. I am 65 yrs. Old. I stir fry, do vegetarian, and other more modern cooking also, but I love the good old food of our childhood. We didn't call it comfort food It was just Food, Ha! I do remember the little jelly rolls also. Loved them. I really think they were hostess. We lived in Memphis back then. Wish we could sit down and have a cup of coffee and a slice of jelly roll or pie etc. And talk about cooking and the old days. Thank you so much for your show. It lifts my spirits in the midst of having to try and keep my hubby on his heart healthy diet. At least I can dream about these things, ha!
Mrs Stokes, I really love your videos and site, as well as your clear, no-nonsense delivery. Am making your jelly roll as part of a traditional Yugoslavian cake for my hb's birthday. Greetings to you from Burlington, Ontario, Canada!
Oh,Phyllis! Thank you so much for this "old fashioned" Jelly Roll recipe! My mother used to make these once a week, every week and they were my dad's favorite 'sweet' because they were not wealthy by any means. I didn't get my mom's recipe (wish I had) and now at the ripe-old age of 66+ I'm hungry for a jelly roll!! lol I'm From Nova Scotia,Canada and enjoy watching your videos!
This video will be 6 yrs. old in September. I came across it tonight May 23, 2019. I love Jelly Rolls. Raspberry happens to be my favorite. I'm so going to try making these. You are so great at explaining the directions. 1st I'm going to buy the pan you used here. Thank you Phyllis so much for all your wonderful recipes. I'm praying for you daily for a complete healing. 🙏
You certainly make it easy to understand....marvelous! And, yes, being a child of the 50's, I well remember those rolls...and some other treats available at the time. Congratulations....I'm going to see if you have other RUclips videos.
I loved finding your site last year for my first ever jelly roll ! So easy with your calm slow directions!! This year I am at it again making them festive with decorations and confidence for Christmas! Thank you again! P. Rader from Massachusetts!!
What a great memory. I grew up in New York City and I often ate The Raspberry Jelly Rolls. Unfortunately Hostess no longer makes them so I decided to make it for my Grandaughter. Shes 2 and said Grandma more plea we. It was great !!! Thank You so much for the recipe and the great memories. God Bless
Yes Phyllis, I remember them well! They came three in a package and as I remember, they had a coating on the outside of the raspberry filling and fine shredded coconut! Love them!
I went and bought a jelly roll pan. I looked at the ones you recommend and while they look good, I saw the reviews on the USA pans and decided to go with those. I got it in and was wowed how heavy it is! I think I am going to slowly replace all my bakeware with USA pans at Amazon. I have been looking for really heavy duty pans forever and these are very thick. Hope you go check them out! My husbands favorite cake is pineapple and i plan to make a pineapple jelly roll! Wish me luck!
I remember those jelly rolls. There were 3 in a package. My dad got them all the time. I found your channel by accident and saw your jello one. I was hooked by it and your soothing voice
Miss Phyllis Thank you for bringing tat recipe back they were my favorite my father was part owner of a grocery store in tupelo miss called Todd's big star they were there and yes they were put out by hostess I really do miss those times they were the good times.
Thanks for the recipe. I've been looking for this particular recipe for a very long time, at last, I've found it, thanks to you. I use to buy the jelly roll from the local grocery stores here in Hawaii when I was growing up in the 50s. I miss those old fashioned jelly rolls. I'll make one small modification though by coating the outside surface with jelly also, then sprinkling it with grated coconut. That's how I remember it in Hawaii. First chance I get, I'll try your recipe. Let the old times roll jelly roll. Thanks again.
OMG! I made two and carefully followed your recipe. The last one I made turned out to be a total disaster from a different recipe. Thank you, thank you! I used raspberry jam for one roll and a mixed jam of mango, pineapple and peach jam for the other. They turned out perfectly 👌🏽. Thank you for sharing and all your tips. They make great treats whenever one goes to someone else’s house to eat! xx
Phyllis! I absolutely adore you. After watching other videos from other chefs none compared to you. It was such a pleasure to watch this video. Thank you for posting this and I look forward to watching your other videos as well!

I'm cooking my roll now. Will add red plum jelly, like my mother-in-law taught me! I learned how to make my cake batter better with beating those eggs! Thanks. A crumb of the cut off crust tasted good. Will let you know the end of the story when I get my completed sampe! I really enjoyed and appreciated your video since Mom isn't here to help me anymore.
Hello Ms.Phyllis, thank you for making the recipes that my Ma made and that I grew up on. They were simple but they were the best. You use all the same tools, tricks and ingredients too! It's so refreshing. My best to you.
I never had a bought one but my Mom and grandmother made them often. They would only use homemade "wild plum jelly" and they were soooo delicious! I also remember they put them out on a damp cloth rather than one sprinkled with powdered sugar. (The powdered sugar makes more sense to me though) I live in Texas.
They sell the raspberry and creme little jelly rolls and other brands too in various grocery and dollar stores.. I have a nephew who really likes them.. Love to watch your videos.. I was born in the 50's...thank you for your time and going a good job
Had to make one to remind me just how good they where back in my day. It was real easy with no separating eggs and all the other mess like other recipes. That you for the post. The only thing i done was the filling which i used whipping cream and jam and mixed to put in the middle. Great recipe.
I remember the little jelly rolls. We use to buy them at the store in the 60s. The large ones too. This one looks really good. mmmmmm the chocolate with the cream inside too.
hi there.....i am so glad that i found you. I really liked your video on making the 1950's jelly roll. it also takes me back,.my mom would always buy it. but i remember it having coconut on it....i was hoping you were going to add the coconut.....it's still looks yummy. thank you
My Mother-in-law used to make jelly rolls but the recipe was lost with her passing away. Thank you so much for demonstrating how to do it and I'll definately have to get me some of those pans now. She always used her homemade wild blackberry jelly and it was delicious. We called them briar berries. I was going to ask you if your Granny used to say "hain't" for "haven't" and nary for "not any".
elliemae4525, I have found a lot of old recipes by using search engines to find old newspaper recipes. You never know what will show up even depression era cooking with few ingredients.
This is such a delicious jelly roll, Phyllis. I just made it for my husband, and it turned out perfectly! He absolutely loved it! Great recipe! Thank you for another wonderful one!
Love ❤️ 😍 💖 your recipe plus your wonderful personality you seen so clam when you are in the kitchen. Yes I do remember the jelly rolls and the chocolate cup cakes not that far back. Kinda close to it. Can't wait to get all my duck back in a roll ,I'm going to make recipe the only problem 😋 I most likely will eat myself. LOL😁
I was so glad to run across your video. My dad ate these all the time in the 60's. If I remember they were made by Dolly Madison in our area. He would get 3 little cakes in a package. Can't find them today anywhere. Cannot even find a picture of them on line. But anyway, thank you for making this video.
Looks so good. Have you ever shopped at a Sam's Club? I've been buying my real vanilla extract there for years. It's very inexpensive and comes in a bottle that holds at least 8 ounces and costs about the same as those tiny ones in the regular grocery store. They also have a convenient hole in the cap that pours easily into a measuring spoon.
Your videos are absolutely wonderful. Your presentation is so peaceful and calm and you make everything look so easy. I remember the jelly rolls but never ate them. I was all about chocolate back in the 50's. Hostess cupcakes were my favorite.
Wow! I never made a jelly roll before; my husband would love this, so guess what I'll be trying? YES you got it Phyllis! You have now converted me to the "most wonderful" wife in the world!!! and I thank you :) Feeling happy in Kansas.... Terri
Hi Phyllis, so glad to see this recipe. I remember my mother making these and her recipes were lost. Can't wait to try it! Oh yeah I think maybe it's the little Debbie jelly rolls your thinking of. My husband loves them, a bit to sweet for my taste.
hi Phyllis here in England they are called swiss rolls don't know if you have heard them called that I love them with ice cream on the side so if you ever come to England you will have to look for swiss rolls in the shops here thanks for sharing
I truly enjoy your videos. I have used your recipe and my grandbabies ate the whole thing. But not to worry, I made two so their Papa and I could enjoy with our tea after supper.
Hi Phyllis, You have so many awesome recipes! I came across your channel and like so many others really enjoy your videos and all. My son loves chocolate with whipped cream. I make it for his birthday every year. Thank you and God bless you and Mr. Bucky.
Thank you Phyllis, my sisters and I have been trying to make a jelly roll like lour late mother, your video really helped I think we have finally did it.
Hi Susan, My current plans are to make one with peanut butter and have a cream cheese and peanut butter filling and for sure it will be sweet. I love peanut butter, we use it several times per week in our morning smoothies. Have not worked on this recipe yet - it will take a little prayer and work to get it right. I've found that if I pray about the recipe first and then try it out it almost always works the first time. I have made the chocolate but never the pumpkin, it sounds good. Phyllis
This was one of my favorite desserts growing up, next to strawberry shortcake that is... I remember trying to make one of these when I was about 12. It wasn't difficult, but there were a lot of steps for a beginner baker.
Yes I remember the jelly rolls back in the 50's they were very good, you could also make the filling for a Christmas log thank you for the recipe , I believe I still have my jelly roll pan I also used for baking cookies
Hey Ms Phyllis! I remember the little jelly rolls! My dad would take me with him to the laundrymat and on the corner of the strip was a drug store/luncheonette. He would buy us a chocolate eggcream and on the counter were the snack cakes...yum! Anyway, they came in single or pks of 3. They were Dolly Madison jelly rolls. I think they also had jam on the outside n coated in coconut. Then there were the Swiss rolls. I think I liked those better, lol... Chocolate cake rolled up with white buttercream. How I wish I could go back just for a day!
Hi Phyllis, I do a lot of research and have tried different ways that achieve the best results. I found that actually beating the eggs with the sugar with a balloon whisk over a lightly simmering bain marie or double boiler, and bringing the eggs up to just room temp (body temp tested with a clean finger), then allows the eggs to beat to their full volume when mixing with an electric beater or stand mixer/ I hope you try it and please let me know if you do. hugs!
Hi elliemae, My Grandma Cole didn't use either of those words but she did say "hope" meaning help. She would say, "Phyllis, come in here and hope me with the dishes". I never got use to her using "hope" instead of help. It always gave me pause to try and figure out what she was talking about. Thanks for the comment, Phyllis
Little Mickey Cakes made the first one I ever ate. Also made the Banana Flip which was my second favorite. Late 1950’s, in Texas. I think Hostess made both as well. I have made your version of the jelly roll and it was delicious. Need to find a good recipe for a Banana Flip which was sponge cake with banana cream folded up like an omelette. Thanks for posting the jelly roll recipe. It was great. Subscribed!
Hello Phyllis: I too remember the jelly rolls. Occasionally, my mother would make them. My mother would make them out of peach or orange marmalade, then she would glaze them lightly. They were delicious!
Phyllis this looks so good! I always wondered how these were made. It's like a cinnamon roll but done with a cake instead of bread. I'm going to give this a shot and see I'm capable. ;) Thank you for posting and God bless you, Mr. Bucky and the babies.
I used to eat the Dolly Madison Jelly rolls but now all I can find is the Little Debbie ones....Dolly Madison was my favorite. Thanks for sharing this recipe!
LOOKS DELICIOUS. GOING TO MAKE IT TOMORROW MORNING. CAN''T WAIT TO EAT IT. MY 4TH OF JULY CAKE WAS THE BEST EVER. I MEAN IT. I GOT THE BLUEBERRIES FROM SAM'S AND THEY WERE OUTRAGEOUS. LOVE YOU AND BUCKY, CLAIRE AND GEORGE

Hi Susan,
My current plans are to make one with peanut butter and have a cream cheese and peanut butter filling and for sure it will be sweet.
Phyllis

This would be great in the cookbook!
Hi Phyllis, I do a lot of research and have tried different ways that achieve the best results. I found that actually beating the eggs with the sugar with a balloon whisk over a lightly simmering bain marie or double boiler, and bringing the eggs up to just room temp (body temp tested with a clean finger), then allows the eggs to beat to their full volume when mixing with an electric beater or stand mixer/ I hope you try it and please let me know if you do. hugs!
You make this look so easy Miss Phyllis!! Yum...Thanks for sharing! Hugs...Stephy
Looks great!
Looks amazing! Can’t wait to try this recipe out 💜
This looks absolutely toothsome.
Subscribed!
It looks delicious and I too use to eat them as an afternoon snack.
Hello Phyllis:
I too remember the jelly rolls. Occasionally, my mother would make them. My mother would make them out of peach or orange marmalade, then she would glaze them lightly. They were delicious!
Good job.I'm going to make this.
PERFECTO !!!! BRAVO PHYLLIS . WILL BE DOING THIS ONE FOR SURE.. IT WAS from HOSTESS and they were sooo good .. remember ???
Phyllis this looks so good! I always wondered how these were made. It's like a cinnamon roll but done with a cake instead of bread. I'm going to give this a shot and see I'm capable. ;)
Thank you for posting and God bless you, Mr.
