The 1990 Caprice had the mandated passive restraint safety system for the front seat belts. I almost bought a 1990 Caprice, and the front seat belt system was a deal-breaker, and I then searched for, and purchased a 1989 Caprice that had the standard pillar style seat belts. I test drove the 1990 Caprice and the belt was too close to your face, and hindered your side view, as you had to adjust to look around the belt. The passive system was designed so that you could leave the seat belt buckled, and exit the car by sliding a bit to the left while exiting the car. When reentering the car, you simply slid into the already connected belt. One unsafe issue with this system, if the car door opens during a crash, you lose the beat belt restraint, which is not good. This actually happened in a 1990 Police PPV and the door did open during a car chase accident. No serious injuries were reported that I know of. Other than the seat belt, this Caprice is an awesome find! Very cool! 😀🚙🏁
Yeah many car models in the early 1990s had this passive belt system because they were significantly cheaper than airbags at the time, which would also satisfy the requirement and what else is the car maker to do to keep a sub $9000 4 cylinder shitbox within budget constraints with this ridiculous mandate suddenly shoved in their face that would require major changes to the body design to incorporate the necessary hardware for airbags. I had these unsafe belts in the first vehicle I owned which was a red 1992 Pontiac Sunbird convertible that I had for 2 and a half years in college before I parted it out in the fall of 2015 because the body was rotting through due to the harsh Michigan winters , and the top leaked like a sieve when it rained to the point of getting a nice drenching when driving in the rain, had to cover it with one of those car covers whenever I parked it if rain was forecasted, car still drove nice though. My next car was a 1993 Chevy Caprice with a driver's airbag and standard seat belts, 7 months after buying the car I was in a serious accident that deployed the airbag and the driver's door popped open, I was traveling westbound on M59 towards Rochester Hills when a driver failed to stop at a stop sign and I T boned the over vehicle while doing like 65mph. Although suffering 3 fractures in my lower leg that required pins and rods, collapsed lung requiring a chest tube, sprains and torn ligaments in my back all of which several months of rehabilitation before I could return full time employment as an electrician, I wouldn't be here today if that happened in my '92 Pontiac. I remember reading about a case somewhere in Florida where an elderly woman was riding in the passenger seat of a 1989 Buick LeSabre suffered fatal injuries from hitting her head on the pavement when the door flew open in an accident ripping her out of the car, it had this government mandated "safety" system.
Very solid and rust free box Chevy one of the most sought out of the box chevys are the ones with the 5.7 350 mall block but I don't mind the 5.0 either there just as reliable just with a few less horses
Nice car! I wish to bring a caprice like this in to Brazil onde day! I've a similar version of the Brazil's market in 80's: chevrolet opala diplomata version, using GM-250 c.i. 6 cylinders.
