'I Know It's Over' is one of the saddest songs you'll ever hear, yet utterly beautiful and compelling. The whole album is a masterpiece. x
An amazing album, but the title track is far from the best. Listen to the whole album or maybe There is a Light that Never Goes Out is a good choice for a single song
This is possibly the wrongest thing anyone has ever said. Not only is it the best song on the album, it's also their best song
Agree! Best thing they ever did and that is saying a lot because their catalogue is ridiculous.
I adore the Smiths.....and it's so lonely on a limb. I actually would have recommended "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" "Shoplifters of the World Unite," "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" or "William It Was Really Nothing" as a first listen, but this is a good track. I really hope you will explore this band further. Morrisey is the epitome of frustration and angst.
'There Is A Light..' is completely magical. x
This is a good list. Also, "This Charming Man".
For YEARS I thought the lyric was “it’s so lonely on a lift.” 🤣
You started with a great choice!
I’d probably recommend How Soon Is Now? Or Bigmouth Strikes Again or Panic.
Can't go wrong with Bigmouth Strikes Again
Bigmouth!
Morrissey and Marr. One of the great songwriting partnerships.
One of my favourite bands ever. So much to experience with The Smiths. The Queen is Dead is a perfect jumping off point. (I get all Irish when I hear this.) Morrissey is no monarchist, nor am I. Happy you have heard this. Blessings to you D.
All their parents were Irish as you know
One of the best the smiths reactions I've watched so glad you enjoyed it. Hope you carry on the smiths road you will love them. Try bigmouth strikes again or heaven knows I'm miserable now. ENJOY
I'd listen to Stretch out and wait, Half a person and Unloveable
Soooo familiar with this! Love the intro! The bass and drums are great! Love the band!
The Smiths in the UK, and R.E.M. in the US, were champions of alternative guitar-based music in an era of power ballads and synth pop.
It's really incredible that Manchester produced the Fall, the Smiths, and Joy Division in the early 80s, at the same time that Athens, Georgia produced R.E.M. and the B-52s. Staggering amount of talent.
If only The Smiths could have held it together as long as REM did.
To add another layer of complexity (according to Wikipedia) the title of the song is taken from the title of one of the parts of the novel Last Exit to Brooklyn (never read the book but saw the movie several years ago and I'm still recovering).
Good luck with holding off listening further to the Smiths but I will mention that the album was voted best album of all time by British music rag NME back in 2013 so it's begging for a listen of the whole album (either on your own or in an extended video...)!!!
Love the smiths, so many great songs my favourite tracks are Girlfriend in a coma, Heaven knows I’m miserable now.
In the last century, chemical castration was also the punishment for homosexuality in England as an alternative to jail time.
"The Queen is Dead" is only one end of the spectrum of the Smith's music. Something like "Ask" is towards the other more pop like end.
One song I don't think gets enough love is "Unhappy Birthday" off of "Strangeways Here We Come".
"Headmaster Ritual" is another off "Meat is Murder". It is probably one of the closest to "The Queen is Dead".
I would highly suggest "Paint A Vulgar Picture." It's a slam on the music industry. Sad song
that is the first song of my favorite smiths álbum. it is the soundtrack of my teenage days. o live that you chose a good song, but not of the obvious ones, it reflects the good thing about your channel. nevertheless i can recommend some smiths classics that you Will enjoy "this charming man", "how soon is now", "i know its over" and "there is a light that never goes out"
Never understood why people don’t think this is one of the best. I agree it may not be the best one to start with, but this track is awesome regardless
What a great way to start your smiths journey
Morrissey's voice! Love the Smiths. Check out " How Soon is Now" or "Girlfriend in a Coma". But really, they don't have many songs that aren't good
Went straight for the heavy with The Smiths, huh? Like you heard - awesome song, but that was a bit like listening to "Close to the Edge" as your first Yes song. I would have said go for a great, and more typical song of theirs, "What Difference Does it Make", first. That has one of my favorite Johnny Marr guitar lines. Then there is there less typical but huge hit "How Soon is Now", heard on every New Wave club dance floor in the mid-80's. You can listen to more offline, but please consider doing reactions for these two. Cheers
Peace from SF
I loved your reaction, similar to my own in 1985 when I heard my first Smiths song "What She Said" definitely worth a listen Johnny Marr is an amazing guitarist!
Like most Smiths songs the bass is prominent and SO right ….. fkn awesome
And.... The Queen IS dead.
my two favourite Smiths songs are I Know it's Over & Paint a Vulgar Picture (don't know if they've been suggested already)
I did suggest "Paint A Vulgar Picture." I think that and "Suffer Little Children" are 2 of their saddest songs
Buy both, and feel deceived.
Wow. I love the Smiths, but the title track from "The Queen Is Dead" isn't what I would have gone for as a first choice -- I would have pushed "How Soon Is Now?" as a first Smiths song. My favorite Smiths song is on that album, though.
Yeah, I would not say this is a great intro to The Smiths.
This Charming Man?
@@SteveA308 Yeah, that's a great song. In a separate post I recommended _Louder Than Bombs_ as a good "survey" of the Smiths' music (even though it doesn't have many of my favorites like "Cemetry Gates" or "The Headmaster Ritual"). But I struggled with suggesting _Hatful of Hollow_ instead, even though it's much shorter and misses a lot of stuff on _Louder Than Bombs_ , precisely because it *does* have "This Charming Man" and "How Soon Is Now".
Really, the only appropriate thing to do is listen to everything. But recommending that to a newcomer would be kind of a dick move. :)
I agree this was an interesting choice for first reaction but I think How Soon is Now would have been worse. It’s completely personal but that song just doesn’t do it for me. It’s a great song but isn’t anymore representative of The Smiths than this song was. This Charming Man or Still Ill or Big Mouth would have been better choices (to me). But hey he dug this so I guarantee anything else he hears he will love. Maybe not the song Meat is Murder but anything else.
I love "How soon is now" but I don't consider it typical of the Smiths. Anything from the two first albums would work as a good intro.
Surprising first choice but hopefully not the last.
Try Victoria by the Kinks...sounds like a paean to England but it's not
asleep is my favorite smiths song ever
I've always had good luck starting people off on the Smiths with "Panic" - short and gives that unique Smiths perspective.
The most original and influential band of their, or any generation
The Smiths. Of course. Your choices are impeccable.
more Smiths coming our way, I guess?
Girlfriend in a Coma and There is a Light that Never Goes Out are great
The title track goes so hard and fires me up just so “I know it’s over” can break me down
'Big Mouth Strikes Again' would be a good one to check as well. Short and sweet lyric-wise but fun to listen to. Otherwise 'How Soon Is Now' which was suggested as well in the comments.
TY Daniel, an excellent reaction. I'd recommend "Barbarism Begins at Home" for more like this from the same album, "Well I Wonder" for a more ethereal Smiths and "Handsome Devil" for raw, driving 'rock-band' Smiths. For a short lived band they have a prolific set of albums, 12", B sides, anthologies and whatnots to explore. For ex the sprawling "Hatful of Hollow" a collection of Peel sessions, B-sides and different versions of prev tunes. Amazing.
Morrissey no fan of the Monarchy.
Your gonna be hooked
That was very good Danial. You have shown me so much I didn't know.
Viva Morrissey!
Great reaction, thanks... but I can't believe this is your first time with The Smiths, you're going to love them! You could actually do worse than go track-by-track through the whole TQID album (their best IMHO), but be warned this track is *slightly* atypical (more aggressive) compared to the rest of their output, which is one of the most tightest and consistent in the canon, a great-but-brief selection of albums, non-album singles and B-sides with barely a duffer in the bunch... in fact, their mop-up odds-and-sods collections "Hatful Of Hollow" and "Louder Than Bombs" are better than most albums by anyone else... really looking forward to more Smiths reactions from you!
PS I maintain the line, "Eh, I know you and you cannot sing, I said 'That's nothing, you should hear me play piano!'", is one of the funniest in rock music...
They're great ....love this song ...and so is Morrisey's solo material...try Big Mouth Strikes Again, Disappointed, Last of the International Playboys, How Soon is Now
Oh wow. in 1990, a friend gave me an audio tape with alot of their best songs. Its not something that I gelled immediately with but it definitely grew on me. Morissey was not really the best singer but I could tell these songs really meant alot to not just stupid pop songs.
My favorite Smiths album is the previous one, Meat is Murder, with "Barbarism begins at Home" and the wonderful "How Soon is Now?" But I have a soft spot for the first Smiths song I ever heard, "What Difference Does it Make", from their first album, sent from a friend to me on a cassette tape when I was living in Asia. It's a great one!🎵❤️🎵
That was my first hearing, as well. "but I"m still fond of you.....oh ho ho."
I love "I Know It's Over" from this album. Not a very uplifting song but man it's so good. "There's A Light That Never Goes Out" is probably their most beloved songs also from the same album. The whole album is lovely.
Hey Daniel - looks like that your PF 'Meddle' video has been taken down. I thought it might be - great shame that. It's not just your video that we will miss, but also some of the interesting comments from viewers that also disappear with it!
Thanks for letting me know!! Just submitted an appeal.
Thank you Daniel, for finally, finally exploring the world of the hip and trippy. The Smiths. I posted suggestions/reactions tunes of this group, for 2022. So hopefully I’ll be hearing my request. 😃
More Smiths and early Morrissey (Viva Hate LP) please!
Ouija Board!
I know it's over, is one of their darkest and funniest songs. I think that you would really dig it.
Melancholic morbidity
OK yeah, I know that doesn't have anything to do with his song. But I meet Luke Partridge from super science showcase.
So looking forward to this journey 😃
More SMITHS. Also Neutral Milk Hotel. The entire album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. You love Bright Eyes so I think you’ll dig NMH as well. I said it when I joined your Patreon (I know I’m not important but you’re the only person I’ve felt like supporting on patreon) but your reaction/responses are thoughtful and genuine and there’s not nearly enough of that in the world. Keep up the good work man.
Great reaction, and the analysis you read was fascinating.
Please react to William next, I think it's their greatest track, and the imagery and pathos the lyrics convey are second to none.
This is the title track from their 3rd album, often considered their best one. The references could all be true, Morrissey is very literary and a film buff as well. His lyrics are frequently ambiguous leaving it up to the listener to find their own meaning.
I only discovered them a few years ago but quickly wanted to hear every song. I read "A Light That Never Goes Out" by Tony Fletcher and more importantly "Songs That Saved Your Life: The Art of The Smiths 1982-87" which details each song in chronological order as well as the band's history as it goes along.
Recommended songs: 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', 'Girlfriend in a Coma', 'Asleep', 'I Know It's Over' and 'Ask'.
Many will tell you 'How Soon Is Now' but it's their most overplayed song, it was the theme for the "Charmed" TV show, recorded by Psychedelic Furs splinter group Love Spit Love.
Johnny Marr was heraldic as a Guitar Anti hero, by Rolling Stone magazine cause he never does a guitar solo. They are from the same city as Joy Division/ New Order. Manchester UK had some great bands that spanned over 2 decades. Wait till you discover the Madchester scene.
Johnny Marr on guitar. Superb band with lots of great songs. Morrissey lyrics and vocals yeah really good. “Ask Me” is another fav. Great choice and reaction.
if it’s not love then it’s the bomb the bomb the bomb that will bring us together..
Brilliant
After the Smiths broke up Johnny Marr of the Smiths joined Matt Johnson and Made a great album called Dusk under the band name The The. Every song on Dusk is good, check it out.
He’s also on Mind Bomb by The The.
@@Kevvinm yea, but in my opinion Dusk is suck a better album.
One more about the Smiths. If you start listening to them on your own time, the strangely enough, the first place I'd steer you is _Louder Than Bombs_ , a compilation of mostly non-album singles. It's a ton of music on one album and does a fantastic job of surveying their music. The Smiths were really big on non-album singles.
Please Dan.. do some Hawkwind !!!!!!!!! 1971 to 1975 Please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Incredible band - What Difference Does It Make? This Charming Man, Still Ill, You've Got Everything Now - in fact everything off the first album
"some 9 year old tough who peddles drugs (I swear to God I swear) I never even knew what drugs were" 😂 cracks me up every time
I love ur face while u dance
It cycles through very serious to "okay, this is cool" to stank face fairly often 🤣
would appreciate if u could react to Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down"
Suggest "How Soon Is Now?"
You should checkout Johnny Marrs album Call the Comet.
The Smiths and the Bunnymen were the soundtrack to my youth. Excellent choice mate.
Oh man. Can’t wait for
How Soon Is Now
Daniel, you need a dial that goes to 11.
There is a light that never goes out... That's probably the best track to get started on
Great reaction to an amazing song. Give Headmaster’s Ritual a listen.
You have to react to more smiths !
🎶 I say, Charles don't you ever crave to appear on the front of The Daily Mail dressed in your mother's bridal veil 🎶
Ah Mozza. A man who has more artistic ability in his big toe than Benedict Cumberbach has in his whole body.
Awesome reaction!
My favorite is “Heaven knows I am miserable now”, among others I love it!
Thanks for jumping into it!
One of my favourite Smiths tracks.
Continue your Smiths journey and you won’t be disappointed 😁
All of The Queen Is Dead album
How soon is Now
Heaven knows I’m miserable now
Meat is Murder.. to name a few
Now we're talking. Amazing band, even if Morrisey has taken a sinister turn later in life. His solo work is also fantastic. Enjoy discovering it all!
Questioning the wisdom of mass immigration is hardly ‘sinister’.
New subscriber here. I really enjoy your reactions! Your next song from The Smiths should definitely be How Soon is Now. It’s pretty trippy & has one of the most menacing guitar riffs ever. Hope you’ll check it out!
I think you meant Liam Gallagher. :D
Morrissey !
I could recommend dozens of their songs. It’s so hard to pick. William It Was Really Nothing, Rusholme Ruffians, Ask….just drop the needle anywhere and it will be brilliant. Morrissey’s delivery, lyrics, and dark sense of humor combined with Johnny Marr’s guitar were a deadly combo.
you go straight into "indie" dance sway x
Soo many better Smiths tunes than this one, imho
RIP, Andy.
THE TIMING
love he loves it
Great reaction, Daniel! You're getting a lot of comments about "better" or "more representative" Smiths songs, but with Morrissey's lyrics and singing style and Johnny Marr's guitar work (as you noted) both being driven by Andy Rourke's bass and Mike Joyce's drums, this is about as Smiths as it gets. It's more musically aggressive than a lot of their songs, especially their singles, but it's
It's also a great opening track to a great album. If I were you I'd continue with this album. The next song "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" is very different to this one but is also very "Smith." And the rest of the album is incredible.
The Smiths have many unbelievable amazing songs. This song is good but not one of their best.
I just remember buying the record as soon as it was released. Was already a huge fan long before TQID. At first, a very difficult record to listen to. The music video for this song is just incredible, directed by Derek Jarman (whom I believe was also a fan of the band). It's amazing how Morrissey's poetry completely dismantled this institution (monarchy), exposing them. I had some admiration for monarchs but this singer made me see the stupidity of the monarchy. Morrissey created this atmosphere in order to put the queen and her outrageous family into ridicule, not by using violence in his lyrics but he uses poetry and sarcasm to expose them. He creates this image of himself cleverly breaking into the palace and the queen, thinking about her own ability, tries to humiliate him by confronting him about his talent, "she said hey I know you and you CANNOT sing". But Morrissey with audacity tells the queen that he really has no ability to sing, but there's more, he's also a disaster with the piano. He's playing games with her. This is priceless. The Smiths' independent record label, if I can recall, tried to convince the band to change the name of the album. I remember a music critic who wrote that the musicians created such a compact atmosphere, dragging the listener into some sort of a "black mass", which is exactly what the royals and their world of privileges happen to be!
The famous 1986 Derek Jarman directed video of "TQID" needs to be seen to really understand the explosive power, moment, & political context of the track. The Smiths were at their commercial & critical peak with the release of the album/video - it was a bold political statement & ballsy career move when premiered.
The guitar work: that's Johnny Marr, mate - one of the greatest to ever pick up the instrument. Much more to discover - they were the best UK band since The Beatles.
For more Smiths, _Louder Than Bombs_ & _Meat Is Murder_ are prime starting points. This band changes lives.
Hi
I loved/love Morrissey and
The Smiths so much. All their albums, though they never made it in the USA. I did enjoy his early solo works but all his controversy (not the easiest guy to like)...and then his becoming far right-wing and making what sounded to be racist comments: he kinda lost me and many of his fans. Marr is a great guitarist! The Smiths broke up because Marr and Morrissey couldn’t work together anymore.
Still, whenever I hear my favorite songs, like Meet Me At the Cemetery Gates; Panic, Some Girls Are Better Than Others; Girlfriend in a Coma, How Soon Is Now, This Charming Man . . . I am as affected and happy as I ever was. Which is oxymoronic since the music is hardly happy.
I suggest you listen to the songs mentioned above, or one of the first few albums in one sitting, not as reaction but on your own.
Nice one, great réaction, when you have done all the smiths songs ( you have a wonderful musical adventure In front of you) please carry on to Morrissey’s solo career, which is still going on, which is brilliant. Keep the faith.
You might want to check out the Smiths song Meet is Murder. With the opening lines.: Heifer whines could be human cries
Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is murder
Welcome to The Smiths and the genius of Johnny Marr!
Welcome to the wonderful world of The Smiths. You’re in for a very interesting ride!
This song blew my mind away when I first heard it, lyrically and musically especially the drums, I thought it was a drum machine- just too good it's phenomenal!!
can you do LIDO SHUFFLE BOZ SCAGGS x
this was the best one-sided conversation i've been in for a while. your tangent on lewis carroll was so much fun. i love this song, thanks.
Thanks man - was interested to see what you'd make of this one. :)
others have already said it here - but 'How soon is now' is a song that towers above this one - at least on a musical level.
Shit boy there's alot coming from Morrissey
