The footage is simply stunning! A novice mother yet to learn how to rear chicks .. that was proved wrong shortly. Seemingly outrageous given the size of a prey & chick. It looks a mother measuring where to place that awkward food. One of the 4 chicks showed his determination & skill. Unlike bigger raptors, she was unable to process the food into small chunks of comfortable size for chicks. This is a gift, rarely seen image. Thanks for uploading.
For anyone wondering, a large part of that rattlesnake the chick ate is being dessicated by stomach acid. Skin and bones tend to dessicate and this causes them to shrink down a lot. It's similar to how a large trapdoor spider will catch a long venomous snake and dessicate the entire snake, leaving only a small amount of dessicated skin on the ground. Spiders that are of this species can eat a snake as long as a rattlesnake or longer and will drag it into their burrow and throw the remains out later. They dessicate all of the bones and tissues of the snake and suck the liquids up.
Roadrunners are so cool. I met a tame roadrunner at the cafe in Palo Duro Canyon in Texas. He jumped on the railing and started to talk to me. I guess that he was looking for a handout of some kind?
They are my friends and extremely smart. I’ll tell you a story. One night a Kingsnake came to eat their eggs. The male roadrunner tends the eggs at night because his body temperature is higher than the female roadrunner, she sleeps nearby. Well the Kingsnake was coiled over the eggs in the nest. This was like ten at night. The male roadrunner came and bashed into my windows over and over to get me to help him. I went out there and removed the Kingsnake. I could not believe he knew to get help from me. I have many stories about them.
@@sherryshirey2981 sounds like a fairy tale at first. There should be something more than that. In a desperate situation, outrageous, inconceivable things happen. Anthropomorphism couldn't be a better interpretation. Anyway, that's amazing. Corvidae & psittaciforms are known for their intelligence among bird species. Here's another, rather unexpectedly, example of wonder in nature. What an experience you got! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Yes it was a juvenile western diamondback. They are fed continuously during daylight hours. They eat all reptiles, birds, rodents, insects and on occasion certain berries. They will have two to three clutches a year, three if food and water sources are great. They kill their prey by beating it onto the ground to crush its bones and they remove the feathers from the birds.
@@sherryshirey2981hi Sherry. I need to listen to your experience with roadrunners. I wonder if parents choose or switch prey types/size along with chicks' growth. In your video, a huge meal was given to a chick. The same can't be expected from the recently hatched or from the younger ages. My guess is the parents may bring smaller prey items, mainly insects & their larvae, to the nest. It'd be an intriguing behavior if so. An observer like you know the answer, don't you? Wish you all the best & hope to show us real drama in nature! Thanks!
@@footfault1941 They are fed smaller prey after they hatch, and it gets larger as they grow. The prey are insects, arthropods, vinagaroon, solifugae, scorpions, tarantulas, centipedes, spiders, lizards, snakes, mice, rats, young squirrels, birds, baby quail, baby rabbits, cactus fruit. The chicks grow very fast and leave the nest in the area of twenty days. The parents let them stay in their territory after and feed them until they lay eggs again, then they run them off by chasing and attacking.
@@sherryshirey2981 marvellous! Your experience exceeds my expectation. Greatly appreciate for such a quick, detailed reply! Parents measure proper meal .... Many other bird species would increase frequency to feed along with chicks' growth. I must reflex on your precise, exquisite observation. So glad to have spotted your footage! In my personal view, this is equivalent to BBC planet earth series, & I mean it! Thanks again & keep it up!
Incroyable mais vrai.l, oisillon vient d, avaler un serpent de cette taille, c, est sûrement difficile à digérer. Bravo pour celui qui a filmé la scène.
Why all of a sudden they all stop moving while she’s feeding the snake? Is it a defense mechanism when sense danger? Cause even the babies stopped moving! Just moved their throats a bit. It’s weird like they were on pause but not!
Dang..when a meal is either an all-day delight or nothing...it puts a whole new level on rivalry. I wonder if the baby who gets a huge meal takes a nap the rest of the day..:))...so the others get something.
Road Runners eliminate so many nasty vermin -rodents, rattlesnakes, scorpions, tarantulas, every kind of insect. I'd have a limo standing by that nest to escort them anywhere they want to hunt.
Hello Sherry, I'm a researcher working on a nature documentary on roadrunners, we are looking to interview people who regularly interact with the bird. Let me know if you'd be interested in assisting us!

Wow! His stomach is bigger than himself. Good job, baby!
Amazing. That is one large snake for a little one for sure.

Bellissimo video, complimenti, ciao da Verona Italy
The baby is tired eating big snake from himself 😊
Amazing baby ...
A fitting ending for a rattlesnake.
6-8 inch juvenile rattlesnake? How long will it take for that chick to digest it? Are rattlesnakes primary food for Roadrunner chicks?

@@sherryshirey2981"remove feathers"!! Definitely the scene must be captured! That's extraordinarily amazing!

He won't be feeling hungry couple of days lol

No they just realized they didn’t get the snake so they are waiting their turn. They are not afraid of snakes at all.

No, the selfish little fatso will still eat all day! Birds are selfish beasts that have no purpose in life
Wow never seen that before very cool.

incredible!man that snake ten times longer than the chik is gulped down easily,i think that was poisonous rattle snake.
Yes it is a venomous western diamondback rattlesnake.
It is a venomous snake, not poisonous. If it were poisonous, the roadrunner would be dead!
“Eat it like spaghetti, Junior!”
Incredible
Si no lo veo no lo creo, impresionante.
