The original human pathfinder team that Alec assembelled is really something - Sara and Scott that never really saw any combat and all they had going for them was nepotism, Liam - some ex-cop, Cora the asari weeb and some randoms that resigned after landing on the first planet. Truly a force to be reckoned with

@@MydasAU As Lulu says, Shepard wasn't trying to recruit the best of the best(which you would think someone would want as the advance team for a colony mission to a new god damn galaxy). He was trying to recruit people who had important information to help catch Saren. It was only in ME2 where he was going after the best of the best, and there aren't any short-comings there. You have "Mysterious vigilante who has managed to survive pissing off the biggest merceny groups in lawless space", "Ex-STG scientist" "Human hyper biotic" "Krogan Warlord/Scientist"(Replaced by Grunt when your original recruit, O'Keer, is batshit and dies) "Highly skilled assassin" "Asari Justicar" and "Proven member of the ME1 crew". Of those Tali is the most iffy, but she still works.
Not counting the Cerberous duo or Legion who you don't actively seek out, or the two DLC characters. But even the later are proven badasses before being recruited.

I disagree that Joker’s willingness to die attempting to save the Normandy was random.
It seems fair to me that Joker would feel extremely attached to the original Normandy given his limited mobility and accomplishments with the ship. I imagine that willingly abandoning the Normandy would be like cutting off your legs after getting gold medals running in the Olympics.

    • @TCM_Hutchie
      @TCM_Hutchie Год назад +56

I totally agree, and feel I should point out that both Joker and the Normandy are oddballs within the Alliance Navy.
For Joker it's his illness that makes him different, and he's always had to work extra hard to compensate for it and show that he's capable. The Normandy is, of course, the goddamn Normandy. It's a frigate that doesn't do the things frigates are supposed to do. It's joint human-turian built. It costs ten times as much as its counterparts, and because of all that, it too has a lot to prove to Alliance brass and its peers.
And on top of that, it's only once the two of these things come together that each reaches its full potential. It's a match made in heaven right, and I suspect it's the first time Joker has felt like he truly has a place in the Alliance.

Vetra was my personal favorite. Her romance was very sweet and as an older sibling I very much related to her story. Plus awkward romantic turian is a W combo.
They (Bioware) tends to write Turians to be awkward when being romantic. This does make sense though due to their hierarchical and militaristic culture. Vulnerability is not something they actively encourage. Since love requires vulnerability it's always fun to watch the characters come out of their shell.

Seeing her warm up to the idea of Ryder's interest in her was endearing and heartwarming and could be seen clearly with emails to Ryder as she starts to write more intimately as the romance develops. I was on voeld with Vetra and Liam assending the mountain and Liam opened his god damn mouth about Vetra bringing Sid to Andromeda. It honestly left me speechless. I immediately turned around and got someone else.
And while Liam is good natured, he is simply the type of person who should follwo and help, not Lead. He only survives his loyality mission on complete luck, for something that could have been easily planned out in advance.

The exclusion of some of the “less important” races was a bummer. It would’ve been neat to see a Quarian perspective to coming to Andromeda, considering their duty to the Migrant Fleet and wanting to one day take Rannoch back. These Quarians would’ve never seen their home-world taken back in ME3 either, so the perspectives they’d have would’ve been really interesting to hear. Sad that bioware had to fumble the bag on this one, because Andromeda really does have an interesting framework story-wise, it’s just not executed very well.

I am sorry but it makes sense why Joker is attached to the SR1. He gets sacked by the S.A when the SR1 gets destroyed because they really didn't see him as useful. In his comic tie in before ME1 starts he was just a shuttle pilot that was being mocked by a Turian general for the S.A having a man with brittle bone diease. However when Joker steals the SR1 due to taking out the original SR1 pilot he does all the obstical courses while being fired at by S.A fighters. At the end of the comic book he was going to get in a lot of trouble when the Turian general spoke up for him having been impressed on how Joker performed and accomplished his task despite his weaknesses. Jokers love for the Normandy is much more understandable as he is not able to do much else due to his liability of getting hurt other than mundane task in which he joined Cerberus willingly due to them seeing his skills. Though come on man comparing the Salarian Pilot is unfair to joker due to ME2 ending when Joker comes out giving Shepard ans co covering fire despite how dangerous it is.
About Ryder and Shepard part: I disagree. Shepard is mocked and treated like dirt by government officals and aliens alike due to your back ground and who you choose to support. While Ryder "earns" their way because SAM is what makes Ryder useful, Shepard has fought and sacrificed way more people than Ryder dare to hope just in ME1 if we compare them and not ME2 and ME3
"Ryder loses his dad but mom is alive"
"Shepard in ME1 can lose his entire squad in Sole Suvivor Background, has to leave a squadmate behind on virmire while also possibily getting Kirrahe and his squad killed. Has to shoot wrex if they didn't bother to get to know or really take helping wrex seriously who was betrayed by his own dad and has trust issues as a result. Shepard has to make a choice to sacrifice human lives or alien lives to save the galaxy and if they chose to save the Council in ME2 Shepard remebers all the ship names that died saving the Council."
Ryder got a free ride who while makes some "tough" choices are on a way smaller scale. Even when Ryder learns that their father died there is no true emotion even when their father dies, yet Shepard if Kaiden or Ash dies is sulking off and needed emotional support.
To summarize: Ryder is a boring hormornal young adult who's entire purpose relied upon their dad dying to get an A.I who does everything for them and even worse when neither Ryder's have seen combat prior. Where as Shepard be it an orphan, colonist, or born into a military family made a name for themselves despite how hard the N7 program is, doing insaine feats to get the N7 offical rank. Yes we should note Alec Ryder is the reason why they never were well treated but that never stopped Ashley Williams and her dad from pushing themsleves past thr S.A's bias due to her grandfather being the one to surrender Shanxi to the Turians even though we know outside of the games story her grandfather was ordered by the Alliance to flee Shanxi.

    • @primeradiancy

The reason Joker was grounded was because he wouldn't exit the Normandy, causing Shepard to be spaced. If Shepard doesn't die, he likely would've been reassigned to another one of Shepard ships that he inevitably would've gotten.
We know what Joker did to fly the Normandy, but we don't know why he fell in love with it. He has no history with the ship prior to his joyride with it. On the other hand, we know from start to finish Kallo's entire emotional investment in the Tempest.
Also the comparison is not about Joker and Kallo in their entirety, rather specifically to their relationships to the SR1 and the Tempest.
As for Shepard and Ryder, there's no debate. Shepard with a special N7 Soldier and proven war hero no matter the background you choose. They are already well established in the galaxy with numerous individuals from Barla Von, Wrex, and the Citadel Council already being well aware of them and treating them with the respect their allocates require.
And what I mean here is that Shepard is a pre-established character with history, you only connect with them so much. Shepard is already legendary before you even finish making your character.
Ryder, relatively, has no history, no reputation, and no titles worth anything. They are a blank slate.
You, as the player, adopt Shepard's legend. Where with Ryder you would be building their legend in Andromeda.
Ryder, on the other hand, is a nobody. They're just Alec Ryder's child who isn't trusted as the Pathfinder (Addison says this to their face), and Tann won't officially sanction Ryder's work in case they fail on Eos.
Just compare how Wrex views Shepard and how Drack views Ryder when they meet. Wrex is respectful, even granting Shepard the title of a warrior and grants them fair warning about Fist. Wrex also immediately joins with Shepard.
Drack, on the other hand, scoffs at Ryder. Referring to them as a kid, who he doesn't trust, and he looks down on them claiming to "Not want to carry humans". Drack turns down your initial request to join up, only coming around after seeing Ryder in combat.
Also narratively, SAM is to Ryder as the Protean Beacon is to Shepard. Without that Beacon Shepard could never stop Sovereign, just as Ryder wouldn't be able to interact with remnant tech without SAM.
You're mistaking the poor facial animations for lack of emotion, there are more than a few voice lines for you to pick the convey Ryder's grief at Alec's death.

I will be honest, I think delaying this game wouldn't fix that much. Considering that delaying wouldn't fix main villain story (and boss fight) and wouldn't solve overall issue where humanity once again is saving the day. Also I personally hate how Cora has the same last name as Illusive man but isn't connected to him in any way (which could be easily explained by being the "strongest" biotic). Additionally if Cerberus was more "connected" to initiative and using Citadel DLC explanation we could have possibility of evil Shepard, loyal to Cerberus.
And I would prefer if both siblings were active teammates similar to Dragon Age 2 siblings. In this situation and with enough time for writers we could have possibility where other sibling is doing romance options in the background, something similar to Garrus and Tali in ME3 if we don't romance them.

If they were gonna do the background romance there would need to be some player control because it would be really obnoxious if the player's sibling started dating someone the player didn't like.

I do wish we could get a sequel since it has a lot of potential, but that seems like very unlikely now.

I am incredibly offended on Joker's behalf! "Joker risking his life to die with the Normandy never really made sense" - in what universe does it not make sense? He is one of the best pilots humanity has to offer, who had to overcome his disability and physical limitation to become who he is, and he became good enough to fly one of the most unique and innovative ships in the galaxy - the Normandy. The captain of the ship may give the orders, but the pilot is responsible for carrying them out successfully and thus responsible for everyone on board. When collectors attacked Joker tried to do what he could, even though the first Normandy was no match for the advanced collector ship. Do you think he was supposed to give up without doing everything he could to save the crewmembers on board? Joker is an amazing character who had to overcome a lot and never quit fighting, which puts him head and shoulders above absolutely any character in Andromeda.

    • @primeradiancy
      @primeradiancy  Год назад +3

      Few things.
Joker is in fact the best pilot in the galaxy, but that's all the more reason for him to leave. He has the reputation necessary to helm any ship he wants by Mass Effect 2. (Joker killed a Reaper) he doesn't need the Normandy specifically. Joker's connection makes less sense than Kallo's because Kallo doesn't just fly the ship, he helped build it, helped practice test it, and has still vivid memories of working it with all his old collegues.
By the time Shepard makes it to Joker, anyone who made it off the SR1 alive was long gone, there wasn't anybody else besides Shepard to keep the ship up for. (Also given his disability Joker should have been the first person on an escape shuttle) He stayed because, and these are his own words, "No, I won't abandon the Normandy! I can still save her". he wasn't saving crew members, he was trying to save a sinking ship.
Last, Joker himself immediately recognized what he was doing is stupid the instant Shepard speaks to him. He lost his mind in that moment for no other reason than because the narrative needed Shepard to die.
This is not a critique of Joker's character, rather the specific events at the beginning of Mass Effect 2.

Tann's motivations were at least well reasoned, and I don't begrudge anyone having a prejudice against the Krogan. We as players often forget that Wrex, Grunt, Bakara, Drack and Kesh are outliers amongst their people. Most Krogan are incomplex and brutish. Even in Andromeda there are some untrustworthy Krogan. Besides, Tann still ultimately wants the same things you want. He's just a stodgy bureaucrat in a position he wasn't prepared for. He had more depth than most non-squadmate characters, even if he is a douche. B tier for being a decent foil to the protagonist.

It really captured the feeling of excitement and exploration that ME1 gave me on my first play-though of it, but with the superior gameplay of the later mass effect games. Easily an A tier game in its current state imo.

I’m surprised “Trump”, (who’s mother was Scottish), mistook Suvi’s Scottish accent for Irish. Her voice actor (& face model) is Katy Townsend, who’s IMDb entry states “'Cheeky Scot' Katy Townsend hails from Glasgow…”. According to the Samurai Gamers site: “Suvi is a Finnish name which means “Summer,” and Anwar is an Arabic name. Since in the Mass Effect universe the lines that separate humanity’s different ethnicities and nationalities are to a certain extent blurred, a redheaded Scotswoman with a Finnish given name and an Arabic last name isn’t that far out there.” Incidentally, I’m English, but I can (usually) tell the difference between a Scottish and an Irish accent, (if not necessarily a Glaswegian from any other Scottish accent). I’d just add that I’d agree with “Biden” about how adorable Suvi’s accent is, (if surprised that with his own Irish roots he didn’t pick Trump up for misidentifying Suvi’s Scottishness).

While I disagree with alot more on this list than the previous ones, I can't fault alot of the points made. Maybe if there were sequel ghames that expanded on things like with the trilogy some of my gripes with the game could have been looked at more fondly in retrospect. While I definitely dislike Andromeda compared to the trilogy, I also think that it deserved to have a sequel or DLCs and that the short term decision from Bioware to remove any developement of that just to quell people's dissatisfaction in the moment was probably the decision that put Mass Effect as a franchise in the grave. Ever since we've been left with this limbo state of uncertainty and if the upcoming game isn't truly amazing, then i fear that might just be the death of the series for good as it gets cut completely.

I guess the problem with Andromeda never explaining the Nexus uprising well is that Sloane has a really interesting story during the Uprising and the only way anyone would know is by buying the novel. All 3 andromeda novels really help elevate the story in general(first one about the uprising, second one about Cora and the third about the Quarian ark). Reason u say it’s a shame is that if it was part of the game then something like this list would probably have Cora and Sloane higher instead of just throw away lines.
Still love the game and think it’s overhated and hope ME5 has some references about Andromeda instead of completely ignoring it but I can understand why some people didn’t like it(only if their complaints wasn’t focused on the facial issues)

My biggest issue with the squad mates is there is nothing dynamic about them. You can seemingly fail there loyalty mission but they'll still trust you, like you did everything correctly. Like you could just leave Zaeed to die, or screw up Tali's trial. Fail to fix the argument between Jack and Miranda. Wrex could die in the original game and Kaeden/Ashley had to die. You could just not recruit half the cast of ME1. Stuff like that made the game feel alive. While most players would get it correct the fact you can screw up that badly adds replay value and stakes to your choices. Which Andromeda rarely succeeds in. Even in minor stuff.
They are fun sometimes I like our pilot duo gives me shades of Joker and EDI without being a copy of either. Just even in a first game they lack meaningful choices that effect them in this game. Maybe some of these things would come up later but we'll never know.

I think the thing that really bothers me when I replay Andromeda (every 14-16 months or so, not often) is the sentence structure. Half of the dialogue is like it was written by someone with such severe ADHD they literally cannot finish a sentence. This is not how real people talk. You can't just say 4 or 5 words that have vaguely similar meanings to the 10-15 word sentence you were trying to say and expect people to get it. And I often don't. I find myself still trying to decrypt the last sentence halfway through the next one. Subtitles help, since I can read faster than the VAs speak, but it's still just really, REALLY odd writing.
And no, I don't just mean Peebee. Liam, Cora, Jaal, and a few of the others have this same problem. Drack is one of the select few whose sentences always seem to make sense, which is funny because, yanno, Krogan.

Just dropping in that you missed the Angara Avela Kjar. Though she is quite forgettable. She is the female Angara curator that you collect artifacts for and bring back to her. You can also romance her in the same vein as you can the reporter. Meaning you can romancer her and another actual squadmate. Not much to her though, and barely any personality. Hell, her wikipage is a womping two paragraphs long. I'd say D-Tier since I can't name a single characteristic of hers other than her love of her people's lost history. Her romance is also very much barebones with nothing really to it from what I remember. I'd give her an F but putting her with Tann just seems harsh so D it is for me.
I wouldn't even call her worthy of the list but she is romanceable. So Bioware thought there was something there for players to grow attached to. Idk what. I romanced her just for the trophy for romancing three different characters in the game and wondering if she'd give the Angara some depth. And as I recall, she did not.

I definitely jumped on the hate train when the game first came out. IMO I still think it was well deserved, but I did get around to playing it a few years later after seeing it on sale. The story of this game is a total nothing burger not worthy of investing your time in, but if you mostly ignore it and treat it like Mass Effect: Slice of Life it surprisingly does manage to shine in some areas.
Standard to a Mass Effect game, your human crew (other than Suvi) is pretty boring and the aliens are the ones you want to interact with. This game would have been a total bust without good squadmates. For my experience, Peebee, Drack and Vetra carried the whole game on their shoulders. Don't know why people like Jaal. His voice and enunciation annoy the fuck out of me and the Angara are too goofy looking to take seriously, in my personal opinion.
Visually speaking, they actually did somewhat improve the facial animations above their initial meme-tier status at launch. Still, it's not great. The lighting clashes with a lot of the alien character models. Krogan and Salarians suffer from this particularly. Literally every Asari other than Peebee has the same durfy looking face model. It reeks of laziness, or being rushed. This game can be downright ugly at times.
In terms of gameplay, the gunplay is fun and fresh but the class system is dumbed down with swapping on the fly. Jump jets and combat verticality was a cool addition, nothing much to be said about that. Narrative-wise, the new dialogue template was a good idea, just poorly implemented. You're ultimately making the same choice worded differently 4 ways 90 percent of the time. Exploration is your typical bloated 2010's collectable fest, but at least your squad has banter this time around to break up the minutiae.
On the narrative front, I think this game shined most by focusing more on the characters than anything else. Unlike previous entries in Mass Effect, Andromeda took after Dragon Age in having your squad and crewmates' relationship and storyline with the player evolve over time instead of just one focal point mission. Each squad member has a pretty involved personal arc with multiple side events culminating in one big loyalty mission Mass Effect 2 style. And they continue in that vain even after it's completed. They all have something to say after a main mission is completed, giving you a reason to socialize. Now, a lot of this game's writing as pertains to dialogue is cringe, but you can forgive some of it if you treat the game as a more light-hearted adventure and don't take it too seriously. It even does manage to be genuinely funny sometimes, I'll admit. Surprisingly good effort, at least in this one area.
Romance was never a make or break thing for me when it comes to Bioware games, but I have to say that this game implemented them quite a step above the original trilogy in terms of their depth and involvement. Personally I went with Peebee because she was the only one whose personality reflected the more laid back attitude this game had. I was surprised at how in depth it actually was and enjoyed seeing it progress into something more serious and sappy. Sex scenes were pure cringe, though. All I could picture was some overweight, sweaty, hairy programmer beating his meat in the Bioware office when he made that shit. I mean God damn, leave something to the imagination...
All in all I'd say the game deserves maybe a 5 or 6 out of 10. If it had post launch support and some DLC, I'd generously bump it up to a 7. Learning about this game's troubled development and the fact that it was made mostly in the final 18 months before release, it's a decent effort that deserves more credit than it initially got, but I can't go any higher than that. Is it worth playing? Like Obama said, wait for it to go on sale and don't expect it to hold up to the originals. If you go into it expecting a pretty basic sci-fi adventure set in a pre-existing universe that just wants to give you a fun time, I think you might actually enjoy it.

-Sits on the hospital bed, so you don’t wake up from trauma alone (before it’s even romantic as he does this for male Ryder too)
-His entire hang out quests are about “how do I make this place livable not just survivable”
-He does community outreach and genuinely does addison’a job significantly better than she does.
-He is torn, someone who hadn’t found his place. Alec hired ONLY because he reminds Alec of himself, and Alec himself was discharged remember. Liam needed guidance but lost his guide. His mistakes are Alec’s fault too, for giving him this position out of bias. (Stated in the training videos)
-He is annoyih about his morals BUT he’s the only person who brings up how hard it is to leave the MW and realize everyone he loves is dead AND he ultimately makes peace with anyone he hurt, and he ends on being called a friend or even brother to everyone, even Vetra who he had the big fight with, and Drack who didn’t take him seriously at first.
Plus making the human companion and our newest alien best friends was a smart move, makes them both interesting and relatable.

    Tann is the best though!
He doesn’t have a high sense of self worth, he questions his choices daily. His desire to seem linked to the Pathfinder is exclusively because he believes it will help the people as a whole.
Mind you, Tann works with Krogan before the rebellion Sloane begins.
And Addison and Kesh disliking him does nothing.
Addison, for still unknown reasons, literally hates Tann before he wakes up. Kesh directly says she doesn’t want a Salarian in charge and they try to convince some people not to wake him in Uprising.
Tann tells Addison not to launch a ship/mission. She goes behind his back and launches it. Everyone there dies. And Tann still tells the public that leadership messed up. He takes the fall. When Addison asks why he said “us being united is what they need.” He directly tells her she isn’t alone and takes the heat for her…
And then she immediately talks down to him in front of Ryder. She hates him ever since she learned he was ahead of her. Addison is sketchy and terrible.
Tann is a complex character but knowing his struggle and his internal monologue shows a LOT about him. He’s incredible, and definitely the most well written councilor like character.

4:49 you don’t have to have a one night stand with Peebee in order to initiate romance. You can reject the hookup but it doesn’t close off the romance
